Title: Whispering (and other noises)
Post by: lordsquidy13 on November 03, 2007, 23:04:01
I've noticed that Smith whispers in a melody in quite a few songs. Of course, the most popular example is Lovesong's "Fly Me to The Moon".

Recently, I listened to Last Dance, and I heard a whispering melody between the second and third verses. Does anybody know what he's saying?

And then there's his jumbling in The 13th and the shreiking noises in Mint Car, in both which I bareley have a clue to half of the things he says in those sounds.

In "Last Dance" the whispering is "your name like ice into my heart" (i think), which is a line from "Cold".

How about "The Caterpillar" in the beginning, if you turn it up loud, there's some mumbling in the background. It's been bugging me for quite some time now.

I just have no idea what he's saying.

In "The Caterpillar" Robert sings the days of the week in a mixed up order
"Sunday tuesday wednesday ect..."

And in 10.15 Saturday Night, near the end, he whispers "It's alway the same"...

I don't know about whispering in that song but I hear voices every time I go to sleep.... they tell me that Superman could beat thee Flash in a fight but I know that thats the wrong way around. Alice Cooper whispers a lot in The Black Widow (Welcome to my Nightmare 1975) or it sounds like it on my computer.

I always find it very eerie in a way when he whispers like that, especially when I can't make out the words, it's like a ghostly voice...

I love the lines "Eyes like ice don't move" which he used more than once, can't remember exactly what songs, all I know is in the Hanging Garden Demo and I think either Cold or Figurehead.

The whispering in particular at the beginning of Caterpillar gives me chills! :smth020

And when and why exactly did he adopt the shrieking and yipping? I love it, but I've always wondered what exactly made him choose to do so...it's brilliant nonetheless.

Yeah, somehow, I think it makes Mint Car more cheery then Friday, thought the fast tempo, lyrics, and guitars also help. XD

I think the whispering at the beginning of Lullaby is "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with S".  Hope this is what you're after.

P.S. If you're listening to it on headphones and turn it up really loud, it almost feels like someone blowing in your ear...well, it does for me...I love it! :-D

"I Spy Something...... S"

I believe in the video, when he says this, there's an "S" on the wall.

Maybe I'm going to say a foolish thing...  ... yesterday I was listening to CLOSE TO ME with my headphones...we can hear robert breathing on the background, but in the last part of the song (the last "I've waited hours for this...") I think he says something while he sighes, but I can't decipher it :?...

Re: The weird singing at the start of Hot Hot Hot!!!

It sounds to me like a line from the song "She", (you know the one, once covered by Elvis Costello  8) ).
Maybe it's: "She may be the song that summer sings", or something similar that Robert made up from that...

Yeah!  I definitely hear it like "She may.... something",  I always kinda hear "she may be the famous over you",  which is impossible and makes no sense,  but I like your interpretation better!

Hmm, guess I won't be much of a help here. In Gone!, I only hear him go "one, two" and then something like dododo, badabada, and then the first lines: Oh you know how it is, wake up feeling blue, and everything that could be wrong is, including you...

Throw your foot is pretty much adlib all the way through, hehe. He repeats two parts of the song at the end, he just sings them a bit more incoherently. The second part, in the background, is from the beginning, and the first part is this, as far as I know:

it would be so perfect
if you would just fall out the window
throw your foot away
you're tired and your face is grey
like the sad old fool
you groove

Can't hear any lyrics sung backwards in New Day...

In Lovecats, all I hear is him making noises, meowing, or repeating words from the lyrics...

Is there a hidden beginning in It Used To Be Me? Or did you mean this part: all he needs is everyone I've been, and all she needs is everywhere I've seen...

Oh well, so much for trying to be helpful... :?

no Poe, Erik means the hidden/background/whispered lyrics, not the opening lines of those songs.

"one, two..." and then just some mumbling/"instrumental singing". i don't think there's anything else in there, really(?).

i've always just heard "this one this one this one..." repeated, but i don't know if that's what he really says there. but myself i find it being as part of the instrumental track really, and so i never really thought it was so important what the "lyrics" were.

Yeah, when I couldn't hear any hidden lyrics in the beginning of those songs, I just wrote what I heard, to flesh out the songs a bit, looking for the gaps...

I'm having trouble making out words, let alone sentences in the flexipop version of Lament...probably made sense to Robert at the time.  :smth043

by the way 8and unless you're familiar with it already), for "fleshing out" the lyrics of the cure songs, a must have is this:

Thought I could make out "I went to the man, and I said, 'just as you like..:" in Three....but oh jee, look at the time, I've got a life to catch! Before I go, remind me of why we need to know this again?!

Guess I know the answer already... :smth043

Biig mistake!

I'm sorry about the confusion:  you are all right ( and I'm wrong)  the lyrics that are whispered are not at the beginning of Gone!,  they are at the very end of Round and Round and Round, just before!

I guess I was listening to the CD in order, for achange, and got it wrong!

anyway,  I still don't know what is said!

I'm afraid You are mistaken though... It's actually "Daisy... daisy..." which is a quotation from Kubrick's 2001 movie. The highly intelligent computer HAL 9000, one of the main characters in the film, has to be switched off at the end, and his last utterance is an attempt to sing a children's song - "Daisy". Robert sounds very much like HAL becoming disfuntional while singing (i.e. slowing down).

'Enough of that! Stand up straight! What nonsense!'
'No,' I said, my face close to the ground, 'I'll stay as I am'.
'You really can annoy a person, I must say. Such a waste of time! Come on, put an end to it.'" (The Drum Comes)

Of it comes to Gone, he sings:
One...Two...uh
And then the song plays.
But the uh is very fast and short. And silent.
