Title: A survey on fan mentality
Post by: TRWASDOC on February 16, 2018, 20:21:06

Hello,
in school, for the topic of musical sciences, I am doing a project on fan mentality. Via surveys, I want to find out if some of the clichés and myths about us Cure fans are actually true--or not--, if there are things we all share in common, what exactly we all love about The Cure and if there is such a thing as a typical fan.
We have all heard lots of clichés, and now I want to find out if they´re true!
I am planning to write an essay about the results, I think I´ll combine that with the results I will hopefully get from a survey on fan mentality of fans of my second favorite singer, Joe Strummer.
I have to warn you, though: I do have a lot of questions! Just answer whichever you´d like to respond to. The ones I deem the most important are those I typed in capitals. I´m so looking forward to your answers!

These would be the questions:

IN GENERAL...

→ HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET TO KNOW THE CURE?
→ WHEN AND BECAUSE OF WHAT DID YOU TURN INTO A FAN?

YOU
(I'll be writing about what we, as fans, have in common, so this part is on your person...)

[/b]→ WHAT OTHER HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE?
→ DO YOU DO SPORTS? DO YOU DANCE?
→ HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?
→ HOW OLD ARE YOU?
-> WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHES DO YOU LIKE TO WEAR?
→ Do you believe in gender differences?
→ Are you "depressed"?
→ Do you do any music yourself?
→ Are you married?
→ Do you have or want kids?

US
(what do we think of our own fan attitude?)

→ HOW WOULD YOU DRESCRIBE OUR GENERAL FAN MENTALITY?
→ DO YOU AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS?
1. Robert says fans of the band are "generally very passionate" and "all beautiful and clever."
2. Simon notes fans often "feel a bit alienated".
3. Many people are convinced most Cure fans are not that good in sports.
4. Psychoanalyst Catherine Lavaillant stated in the MTV icon show in 2004 that the Cure "helps [fans] with their adolescent issues".
5. We are all fairly obsessed with our very favorite band.

→ What else is there that you're convinced we all share?

THE CURE MUSIC

→ WHAT´S THE BEST PART ABOUT THE CURE´s MUSIC?
[/color]

THE BAND PERSONA AND IMAGE

→ DO YOU ALSO CARE ABOUT ROBERT SMITH AS A PERSON?
→ WOULD YOU SAY ROBERT´S CHARACTER IS SIMILIAR TO YOUR OWN?
-> DO YOU CARE MOSTLY ABOUT THE MUSIC OR IS THE CURE IMAGE AS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
→ DO YOU IMITATE THE CURE LOOK YOURSELF?
→ If Robert Smith left the band, would you still remain a fan? (Just wondering...)
→ Has Robert Smith or another band member sometimes been like an invisible friend to you?
→ Do you have a favorite band member?

I´m excited to see whether I´ll manage to really do this survey--looking forward to your replies! Thanks so, so much in advance! Cheers!

Hi, I have some time on my hands today, so I'll give it a go...
(Just posting in here or where do you want us to send the answers?)

→ HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET TO KNOW THE CURE?

1985. Heard the single "Inbetween days" on the radio.

→ WHEN AND BECAUSE OF WHAT DID YOU TURN INTO A FAN?

Between 1985 and 1987. Because of their music & lyrics. I found the albums at the time were "varied" musically, I liked that.

→ WHAT OTHER HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE?

Music/concerts, reading, walking/hiking, photography, history/museums, movies, art, surfing the net...

→ DO YOU DO SPORTS? DO YOU DANCE?

Hiking, sometimes swimming, a bit of gymnastics maybe.
I like to "move" a bit when I hear good music, if you can call it "dance" is another question...

→ HOW OLD ARE YOU? 48

-> WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHES DO YOU LIKE TO WEAR?

The kind that fits.  ;) Black, grey, blue, white, olive-green, brown, red etc.

→ Are you "depressed"?

Not more as the average human being, I guess.

→ Do you have or want kids?

Maybe, maybe not. We'll see.

→ DO YOU AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS?
Quote1.

1. yes
2. maybe
3. no
4. hopefully
5. probably

→ What else is there that you're convinced we all share?

Good taste in music!

→ WHAT´S THE BEST PART ABOUT THE CURE´s MUSIC?

There's a song by them for (almost) every kind of mood (sad, happy, crazy, thoughtful...)!

→ DO YOU ALSO CARE ABOUT ROBERT SMITH AS A PERSON?

Yes, but mostly in the way this formed his songs/lyrics.

→ WOULD YOU SAY ROBERT´S CHARACTER IS SIMILIAR TO YOUR OWN?

Partly, maybe. He's sometimes described as "shy, charming, a bit melancholy"...
He runs the band's business almost single-handedly, plus he likes to do things in his own style, which is good imho!

-> DO YOU CARE MOSTLY ABOUT THE MUSIC OR IS THE CURE IMAGE AS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Music is much more important than image. (Although I liked the image they brought across in their videos etc.)

→ DO YOU IMITATE THE CURE LOOK YOURSELF?

Not really. A little "inspiration" is good, but having one's own style is better.

→ If Robert Smith left the band, would you still remain a fan? (Just wondering...)

This would be the end of the band (I guess), thus: yes, I'd still be a fan of the music.

→ Has Robert Smith or another band member sometimes been like an invisible friend to you?

Sometimes, yes. Back in 1989/'90 or so.

I agree with most of PTB's and Ulrich's answers, so I'm focussed on some minor questions:

→ Do you believe in gender differences?
Hmm. If you watch Morte a Venezia you will find the answer.

→ Are you "depressed"?
No, I'm melancholic.

→ Do you do any music yourself?
Unfortunately not. I mean not longer. I have collected a number of Oberheim instruments.

→ Are you married?
I'm divorced, but since then the relationship to my ex-wife has improved.

→ Do you have or want kids?
No, I haven't but I like kids in general.

Hi, answering just a few questions...

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET TO KNOW THE CURE?
I knew The Cure since around 1987, aged 7, seeing music videos on tv

→ WHEN AND BECAUSE OF WHAT DID YOU TURN INTO A FAN?
When I was about 20 y/o I was browsing a recycled record store and found a copy of The Head On the Door on cassette tape. Played it repeatedly in my car, fell in love.
Listened to The Cure for many more years in an abstract way, not having much knowledge of the musicians behind the music (much like how I was listening to Pink Floyd at the time).
In 2011 I had the chance to see the Reflections shows in Sydney ...which helped bring things to another level.

>hobbies:  meditation, kundalini yoga

>sports: does walking count?

> Age: 37

>clothes: usually white!  white expands the auric field

>describe fan mentality :   I can't speak for anyone else.  For me it's an experience of feeling an open and unobstructed appreciation, joy and love about the creation (while being aware of myself in the experience, and not slipping into attachment and craving).

>do you also care about RS as a person?  Yes!!! What a beautiful soul! An openness of heart that permeates and shines strongly ...what a blessing, thank you RS for your presence on this earth!!

→ DO YOU ALSO CARE ABOUT ROBERT SMITH AS A PERSON?
I admire him as an artist and accept him as human being.

→ WOULD YOU SAY ROBERT´S CHARACTER IS SIMILIAR TO YOUR OWN?
There are in fact similarities. I grew up in a small town where The Cure wasn't
very popular; including a catholic background. This is something that I share with
Robert and Lol.

-> DO YOU CARE MOSTLY ABOUT THE MUSIC OR IS THE CURE IMAGE AS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
The music is the key to The Cure - the B-sides in particular.

→ DO YOU IMITATE THE CURE LOOK YOURSELF?
Yes. Not excessive, but I like Robert's style and colors like black, brown,
green, (ocean)grey, red and combinations of them. I have long hair but I'm
not wearing make-up.

Hey, very happy to help you out and I am curious about your conclusions as well. Would you care to post (some of) your conclusions if ready?
Courage with the task  :smth023

→ HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET TO KNOW THE CURE?
In the beginning of 2017, YouTube suggested a version of 'A forest' wich sucked me into the band. Since that night there hasn't been a day passed without listening The Cure

→ WHEN AND BECAUSE OF WHAT DID YOU TURN INTO A FAN?
Became a fan because of the exceptionally good music and lyrics and the melancholy of the music that is so soothing. Also The Cure is so very creative. I love the videoclips they make!

[/b]→ WHAT OTHER HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE?
Music, cinema, reading on my sofa with a cup of coffee, art, visiting museums, fitness, walking, the sea, a forest, travelling (preferably road trip), ....

Fitness and I love to 'dance' well..I am just moving to the music but more like I feel it and not caring about the esthetics

→ HOW OLD ARE YOU?
37

→ Are you "depressed"?
No

→ Do you do any music yourself?
Unfortunately no, have no talent for it

→ HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE OUR GENERAL FAN MENTALITY?
Intense

Yes generally

2. Simon notes fans often "feel a bit alienated".
I know I do

3. Many people are convinced most Cure fans are not that good in sports.
That is nonsense

5. We are all fairly obsessed with our very favorite band.
Yes :D

→ WHAT´S THE BEST PART ABOUT THE CURE´s MUSIC?
Variety and intensity
For every mood or activity there is a song
A lot of the songs are based on beautiful books or poems

THE BAND PERSONA AND IMAGE
→ DO YOU ALSO CARE ABOUT ROBERT SMITH AS A PERSON?
Yes, his lyrics and manners show he is a very sensitive and beautiful person. In interviews it shows as well. He is an inspiration for and helped so many people true his music. I care.

The music is most important. I could do without the image but never without the music!

→ DO YOU IMITATE THE CURE LOOK YOURSELF?
No

How and when did you get to know the cure? Through my older sister at 8 years old.

When and because of what did you turn  into a fan? I turned into a devoted fan (was always a fan) at age 14 with the release of Wish.

You (I'll be writing about what we, as fans, have in common, so this part is on your person)

What other hobbies do you have? Making jewelry, collecting silk clothes, swimming, modeling, painting, creating gorgeous art, running on beach, practicing yoga, studying about health and nutrition, watching Brain Cox docs on physics, self-improvement.

Do you do sports? Do you dance? Not really on sports, but yes on dance, spontaneously.

How would you describe yourself? Humanitarian, peaceful, deep, compassionate, happy, healthy, energetic, inspired, creative, unique, self-aware.

How old are you? 40.

What kinds of clothes do you like to wear? Silk, all natural fibers, colorful, casual but elegant, gypsy artist, comfortable.

Do you believe in gender differences? Yes. Men tend to be more rational and women tend to be more emotional, but there are exceptions.

Are you "depressed"? No. I take plenty of B 12 and B complex.

Do you do any music yourself? Not really, although I've always had a singing voice that people compliment.

Are you married? Almost.

Do you have or want kids?  No I don't have kids. I don't really want any, but I do like kids.

Us (What do we think of our own fan attitude?)

How would you describe our general fan mentality? Sweet, depthful, loyal.

Do you agree with the following statements?:

1. Robert says fans of the band are "generally very passionate" and "all beautiful and clever."  Yes!

2. Simon notes fans often "feel a bit alienated". Yes, I think fans tend to feel like they don't "fit in" in general.

3. Many people are convinced most Cure fans are not that good in sports. I never knew that anybody thought that. No, I don't think it's true.

4. Psychoanalyst Catherine Lavaillant stated in the MTV icon show in 2004 that the Cure "helps [fans]
with their adolescent issues". OH YES! The Cure reflected my deepest issues as a teen. They spoke to my soul (and still do).

5. We are all fairly obsessed with our very favorite band. I've noticed that there are some Cure fans who are obsessed, but many like other bands as much. The Cure is the only band I will wait for long periods of time to see.

What else is there that you're convinced we all share? Not sure. I think we're all pretty unique.

The Cure Music

What's the best part about the Cure's music? The way it makes me feel. So loved, so inspired.

The Band Persona and Image

Do you also care about Robert Smith as a person? YES!!! I want him to be healthy.

Would you say Robert's character is similar to your own? Yes, I think I do have a lot in common with Robert; such as our Moons are both in Libra, our Mars are both in Cancer, we both have a lot of paradox in our astro charts, and the self-conscious shyness (which yoga and exercise and eating plant-based has helped me get beyond) and our interest in peace, in fairness, how we love people.

Do you care mostly about the music or is the cure image as important to you? Mostly about the music. Sometimes I'd like to see Bob sing without make-up, but I do LOVE the image, too.

Do you imitate The Cure look yourself? I do emulate Robert Smith pretty well. I used to try to dress like him, but these days I think I dress more like a lady.

If Robert Smith left the band, would you still remain a fan? (Just wondering...) Not really. I'd hope that Robert would go solo if he left the band, but I probably wouldn't follow a band without Robert in it.

Has Robert Smith or another band member sometimes been like an invisible friend to you? Not really.

Do you have a favorite band member? Robert Smith. <3

@TRWASDOC
To be honest, I have a problem with words like 'alienated' and 'obsessed'.
They imply a negative touch and I'm quite sure that Simon has been wrong
cited. He said outsiders and that's true. -

'Obsessed' suggests that we have no other interests apart from The Cure and that's
not true as well. The answers have shown that so far. I can't speak for the younger
ones but you mustn't think that all those 'melancholic' fans are "poor sausages".

A survey of fan mentality: The Cure

In General

How and when did you get to know the cure? I got to know the band when I was a teenager, mainly thanks to my mother who used to love the Cure when she was young

When and because of what did you turn  into a fan? It was love at first listen, I immediately liked their dark side and wanted to get to know their music better

You (I'll be writing about what we, as fans, have in common, so this part is on your person)

What other hobbies do you have? Music, movies, languages and translation, reading, traveling and my beloved dog

Do you do sports? Do you dance? I am terrible at sports! I walk my dog twice a day

How would you describe yourself? Quite, reserved, faithful, sensitive

How old are you? 24

What kinds of clothes do you like to wear? I like to be feminine, but comfortable at the same time. Instead of trousers, I prefer wearing dresses, skirts, leggings.

Do you believe in gender differences? I believe in gender differences, but not in gender supremacy.

Are you "depressed"? No. I have learned to appreciate my life and be happy of who I am and what I have

Do you do any music yourself? No

Are you married? No

Do you have or want kids? I don't have kids, but I really like them...Maybe one day

Us (What do we think of our own fan attitude?)

How would you describe our general fan mentality? Passionate and devoted

Do you agree with the following statements?:

1. Robert says fans of the band are "generally very passionate" and "all beautiful and clever." I agree with the first statement, the second one is maybe a bit "too much" and can't apply to everyone IMO

2. Simon notes fans often "feel a bit alienated". I agree, this reflects the introspective nature of most Cure fans

3. Many people are convinced most Cure fans are not that good in sports. Personally speaking, this is true!  :-D

4. Psychoanalyst Catherine Lavaillant stated in the MTV icon show in 2004 that the Cure "helps [fans]
with their adolescent issues".
Why only adolescents?

5. We are all fairly obsessed with our very favorite band. Hmm, I would use another adjective...Obsessed yes, but in a positive way

What else is there that you're convinced we all share? Introspection and sensitivity

The Cure Music

What's the best part about the Cure's music? The original, creative and dark nature of the Cure, but also the fact that they have so many different sides and this is what makes their records so beautiful and interesting in my opinion

The Band Persona and Image

Do you also care about Robert Smith as a person? After all these years of being a fan, yes

Would you say Robert's character is similar to your own? This is impossibly to say as I don't know know him in person, but we have some things in common

Do you care mostly about the music or is the cure image as important to you? The music is everything

Do you imitate The Cure look yourself? No

If Robert Smith left the band, would you still remain a fan? (Just wondering...) I don't think so, Robert Smith is the mastermind of the band

Has Robert Smith or another band member sometimes been like an invisible friend to you? Yes

Do you have a favorite band member? Bob

Us (What do we think of our own fan attitude?)

How would you describe our general fan mentality?
Hmm. Mostly calm waters...

Do you agree with the following statements?:

1. Robert says fans of the band are "generally very passionate" and "all beautiful and clever."
Yes.

2. Simon notes fans often "feel a bit alienated".
No.

3. Many people are convinced most Cure fans are not that good in sports.
I do believe a majority is, including me.

4. Psychoanalyst Catherine Lavaillant stated in the MTV icon show in 2004 that the Cure "helps [fans]
with their adolescent issues".
Yes.

5. We are all fairly obsessed with our very favorite band.
Only a minority is 'obsessed'.

What else is there that you're convinced we all share?
Charisma.

The Cure Music

What's the best part about the Cure's music?
The hidden one - their gloominess.

The Band Persona and Image

Do you also care about Robert Smith as a person?
see reply #6

Would you say Robert's character is similar to your own?
see reply #6

Do you care mostly about the music or is the cure image as important to you?
see reply #6

Do you imitate The Cure look yourself?
see reply #6

If Robert Smith left the band, would you still remain a fan? (Just wondering...)
Hard to imagine that The Cure will continue without him. That doesn't work.

Has Robert Smith or another band member sometimes been like an invisible friend to you?
Yes.

Do you have a favorite band member?
Actually two: Robert and Lol.

To be honest, I have a problem with words like 'alienated' and 'obsessed'.
They imply a negative touch and I'm quite sure that Simon has been wrong
cited. He said outsiders and that's true. -

Hey, he did say "alienated", in fact he stated that in that MTV icon show 2004. I can search for the link and give it to you, if you´d like.
Now that you mention it, perhaps "obsessed" does sound too negative... I get your point. But I guess I prefer seeing it in a rather funny manner, you know? Like the "Cure fans are all beautiful and clever" statement of Robert´s.

@TRWASDOC
Someone asked for your conclusions at a later time. That's OK,
but I think you should answer the major questions as well, shouldn't you?

Alright, alright ;-) If you care. Here they are:

-> HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET TO KNOW THE CURE?
My favorite singer at the time mentioned The Cure as one of his own favorite bands back in 2014 and I became curious and searched for The Cure on youtube... to find out they are much "better" than him!

→ WHEN AND BECAUSE OF WHAT DID YOU TURN INTO A FAN?
I was impressed right away by the guitars in Friday, that's why I wanted more... I considered Bob's voice so weird... Next song I got to know was Burn, I was absolutely astonished at the feel of  the song, plus it was so different...  But I think what really got me was the third song I heard, Pictures Of You, I just loved the melody... It's never boring listening to The Cure and in fact I should be listing all 270 or so reasons I'm a fan for every song that I know.
The Cure and especially Robert are DIFFERENT. I love that as much as I love RS's voice. I love the fact that you can't put them into boxes because I'm like that myself.

→ WHAT OTHER HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE?
Songwriting, playing the guitar/keyboard, singing, writing (I publish my lyrics on twitter @ www.twitter.com/AlwaysDeparture if anyone here cares) and reading, astrology, ethics, watching interviews with Robert Smith and, lately, Joe Strummer, and drawing—oh, and, SADLY, studying for school subjects I dont't like too much because I'd rather spend more time read the newspaper

→ DO YOU DO SPORTS? DO YOU DANCE?
Can't do sports—health problems with the eyes and the leg. Can't tell if I dance. A month ago I'd have said I didn't, but I've been moving around a lot when I sing and play the guitar.

→ HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?
Original and unique, creative, crazed, passionate, brave, punky, worshipping solidarity, socially critical, curious and enjoying to pull a show/entertain
→ HOW OLD ARE YOU?
Sixteen
-> WHAT KINDS OF CLOTHES DO YOU LIKE TO WEAR?
I always wear black pants. My T-shirts are usually red or green and I wear a black pullover/hoodie most of the time, or a blue one. Nothing I wear is tight—always lose-fitting. Oh, and I always wear this gray jacket.
→ Are you "depressed"?
I used to be, but the fact that I loved RS's voice got me over that.
→ Do you do any music yourself?
Yeah—guitar, keys, singing
→ Are you married?
I'm only 16. (No.)
→ Do you have or want kids?
Probably not.

→ DO YOU AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING STATEMENTS?
1. Robert says fans of the band are "generally very passionate" and "all beautiful and clever."
They seem to me...
2. Simon notes fans often "feel a bit alienated"
[That's what I'm most curious about finding out, but I tend to think that die-hard Cure fans do, but not 'regular', alias "I do like them, they're alright, I listen to them  every once in a while" fans.. But I really don't know yet!]
3. Many people are convinced most Cure fans are not that good in sports
Actually, for most people I've asked on other pages (TCC  and facebook), this is true. But I haven't asked too many, only 17 yet!
4. Psychoanalyst Catherine Lavaillant stated in the MTV icon show in 2004 that the Cure "helps [fans] with their adolescent issues"
This seems to shallow. Perhaps they do help with general issues, but I think it's a little embarrassing to say The Cure would "help teenagers with adolescent issues." The Cure are much MORE than that! Never underestimate someone who's called Robert Smith or Simon Gallup!
5. We are all fairly obsessed with our very favorite band
I am, too

→ WHAT´S THE BEST PART ABOUT THE CURE´s MUSIC?
The guitar playing and singing of Robert's! The diversity, authencity, attitude...

→ DO YOU ALSO CARE ABOUT ROBERT SMITH AS A PERSON?
Absolutely. I've watched every interview viewable online and have read two books on The Cure.

-> DO YOU CARE MOSTLY ABOUT THE MUSIC OR IS THE CURE IMAGE AS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
The image is really funny, isn't it. People tend to consider TC weird because of it. But I love the music. What I like about the image is the fact that it strengthens the "do NOT put me into your tiny little box!" thingy. But that is not that important in my eyes. Though people actually look at me funnily when I tell them I'm a fan of the Cure because they don't even know the public persona, only see a few pictures and think Robert is an emo.
→ DO YOU IMITATE THE CURE LOOK YOURSELF?
I don't. I've worn various layers of untight black/gray clothing before I got to know The Cure.

Thanks a lot, folks! Your answers did help a lot. Hey, how many answers would you think I need to make a halfways reliable survey? I have "only" seventeen yet, but I hope I´ll find more people still. I´ll try it on another fansite, too, later.
Perhaps the final outcome will be there really is no typical fan at all, or perhaps there´ll be something like, I don´t know, 85% of all people I asked wear black most of the time. We´ll see... I´ll let you know!

IMO the best would be to create a survey using e.g. Google Docs https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-do-i-create-a-free-online-survey-using-google-documents

is more user friendly and many questions are just yes/no so is easier for someone to answer. You can then share the link to the form here or anywhere else.

The more, the better, I'd say! 17 is not that much. (However it is a good number for Cure fans!)
But as it's for a school project, why don't you just ask the teacher(s) how much you'll need?

It's okay, n I met her back around September, when I started becoming a Cure fan, n after awhile I realized her name was the same as Mary Poole's.

Me n Mary fell in love Dec 17 of last year after we had a cuteness contest, thou I called her Mary Poole once, she is not similar to Mary Poole. Mary is more similar to me which is why we are so perfect together n have great chemistry. We're perfect soulmates.
