Hi ,
I also express here the doubt that I have placed in other forums.
the first CDs issued anywhere outside Japan were 1983.
Which is the first "the cure" CD?
First check this 12" issued in 1984
http://www.thecurerecords.com/record.aspx?id=5288&fbclid=IwAR3UXaojGF0kWvilMPk570eFPmJs5bFRj8HiFjDqfYN_MHIgZKW8xbyEA3Y

And check carefully the back of 12" : https://imgur.com/5LZg5ca?fbclid=IwAR2_urV40ZKETzkK73SrUIUkymEKMLnPrVKF7EeaeaFyjmN-B5isYNcY9u8
Can you see ' CD 821 136-2 ' ?
This is 'the top' LP bought in 1984 : https://imgur.com/MneFW6S
Can you read 'also available on cassette - compact disc CD 821136-2 ' ?
-----------------
My friend bought the album of 'the cure' ' concert' in 1984.
Please check carefully the back of this album here :

Could you see 'compact disc 823 682-2 '?
The front of 'concert' bought in 1984 : https://imgur.com/a/mnE8KO0
------------------------

My friend says she bought this CD in 1985( with certainty):

CD: https://imgur.com/o9VpNVR
back :https://imgur.com/a/v3RwAo6

Although I think this is not true because I think this CD was released in 1988: https://www.discogs.com/it/The-Cure-Concert-The-Cure-Live/release/1870557
-----------------------------------------------------

Once it was said that this was the first "the cure " CD release ever : https://www.discogs.com/it/sell/item/448209850

Once it was said that this CD issued in September 1984.
But now they have corrected the release date,
writing Feb 1985.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

That date (February 1985) was taken from Steve Binnie's book:
https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/0244129657/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

According to that author in February 1985 several CDs of "The Cure" were printed, namely:
seventeen seconds, faith, pornography, japanese whispers, the top, concert -the cure live.

Could you help me find out which was the first CD ?
Could you put very clear photos of it?
Many thanks.

For this book  A Sharp Shock to th System  the first CD was released in 1984 and was 'the top'.

I agree, I always thought the first cd album released by The Cure was "The Top". (I think this was mentioned in the book "Ten Imaginary Years".)

This is the discography taken in the book "Ten Imaginary Years".

Next to each album is only indicated when the album came out and not the CD too.

This is because the first CDs that appeared in Europe date back to March 1983(https://www.discogs.com/it/forum/thread/744469).

For this reason "Boys don't cry" can't be released on CD in 1980.
The same goes for several other CDs.

If anyone could explain this discography as regards the first releases on CD I invite him to make an explanation.

Matti

The list is only stating information about the formats available at the time the book was published I believe. The whole back catalogue had been released on CD by 1987, probably even before.

Judging from the catalogue numbers, it would look like "Boys don't cry" would be first, then "Japanes Whispers" and "The Top".
(It might still be the case, that "The Top" was the first one which was released simultaneously on vinyl, cassette and cd. As Matti already pointed out, this discography lists the releases known of in 1987, the dates given are of course in relation to first release - which was "only" vinyl and cassette until at least 1983.)

Even if this is not sufficient proof, already in June 1984 the advertisement in the English magazine 'the face' of a CD of 'the cure' appeared.

This is because it could be that what has been written has not been respected and the CD has been put on sale in stores only since 1985.

One thing to have certainties and one thing is to make assumptions.

Also in 1984 the existence of a CD 'concert the cure live' in the magazine 'record mirror' was advertised.

That would tie in with my theory that "The Top" was released simultaneously on vinyl (album), cassette and cd.

Also, wouldn't it be embarrassing for Fiction/Polydor if they advertise a cd release and then it isn't available for months?

(Edit: btw, a copy of the same ad was printed in that book "Ten Imaginary Years", so that's where I read it first.)

Ulrich

Yes, that's what I meant. Possibly the cd was "pushed back" until early '85? (I can imagine back then the demand for cds wasn't that big.)
Still, it seems that this was the first (new) album by the band released on cd.

'The Cure on Record' by  Darren Butler confirms the 815011-2 serial for the Boys Don't Cry CD but states it was released in Europe in September 1986.

I'm not sure how those CD catalogue numbers work, but assuming they're sequential then perhaps Boys Don't Cry is an oddity as it was previously released on vinyl and cassette by Fiction in September 1983 (source also The Cure on Record) so already registered with whoever issues the numbers?

Anyway, if that's all right then the lowest catalogue number is Japanese Whispers (817470-2) and so in the UK at least, it's the first CD release in December 1983.

Except that "the top"  is not present, "faith" on LP was released in April 1981 and Seventeen Seconds on LP was released in April 1980 this document seems to be part of a sales release for Disintegration, sent out to record stores, detailing the release date, the promo campaign and includes this sheet of sales figures to demonstrate how popular The Cure were up until this point. Each album has details of how many units of each format of each album have been sold in the U.K. up until February 1989, along with the U.K. chart position.

I took this document on Facebook from a collector of "cure" records who had exposed it publicly.

The rest of the document below:

For  'the top' on CD I will make a separate speech.

Why do you say that?

Because, even if the cd version was "late" and came in '85, it was still a "new" album by the Cure (unless the cd came after "The head on the door")...

(Btw, I don't see "Japanese Whispers" as a "regular" Cure album, because it's a collection of singles & b-sides.)
