Title: Your first time with The Cure
Post by: dsanchez on March 23, 2006, 20:50:06
When and how did you find The Cure?

My first time was around 1992. At this time I was most involved in bands like Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode but I've got this "Wish" tape. I must say they didn't call much my attention. Why? Because I was more interested in the electronic stuff. It wasn't until I got the Picture Show and Play Out video when my view about the band changed. I started to like The Cure more and more every day. I remember the days when I came back from school, sit on the living and watched the best Cure ever version from "Pictures of You", the one from the Play Out Video. I was just 15 years old.

What's your story?

MTV, 'close to me' video.  i enjoyed them playing combs and the whole chlostaphobia idea of the video.  i really didn't get into them until a few years later.  radio in my town sucked and i relied on mtvand word of mouth to hear about good music.

It was about a year ago that I really discovered The Cure. One of my gal pals had been trying to turn me onto them for about three years, and I finally saw the "Pictures of You" video on VH1 Classic, and realized that she's really onto something. Within months, I owned all four Deluxe Editions, Trilogy, and The Cure. Can't believe it took that long for me to get into them

I discovered them a couple of years ago on this "22 greatest bands" show. It played some clips of the songs, and i really liked it. I found a magazine with an interview with Robert in, and found out some more about the band. Then i saw the video for Lullaby, Friday im in love and a live version of Just like heaven and became addicted! I began collecting all of their music, I will never forget hearing Disintegartion for the first time, and i've loved them ever since!

I often saw them on MTV in 1992 and my interest wasn't that big because I was only 11. But I didn't forget it and 4 years later I rembered them and bought my first CD (Concert - The Cure live). It was 1996. After that one CD followed the other and my love for the cure was growing and growing.
Than I saw them live on TV in 1998 and I was a little bit dissapointet because they sounded not so good as I was used to. But than I bought the SHOW-Video and I was in love again. From that moment I became a real fan.  :D

I bought Disintegration in the summer of 1989 without having heard a note of it after I read a couple of reviews and decided I liked the cover. If I'd ever heard a Cure song on the radio before then it hadn't registered with me, but after that...
...and I still remember listening to the tape of Disintegration for the first time and thinking WOW! It is still my favorite album.
I never got to see them live until 2004 though; long time to wait but so worth it I wouldn't change it at all.

I bought Disintegration on a whim a while back and listened to it while driving to see my friend at his school (I remembered the Cure from the "Friday I'm in Love" video, I was 10).  From the 1st note I was astonished.  In fact, I don't even remember driving during the suite of Prayers for Rain-Same Deep Water-Disintegration.  I fell in love that evening, immediately bought Pornography and Trilogy.  That was the BEST weekend I had in some time.  Since then I've amassed an impressive collection of goodies (needless to say I own EVERYTHING they've put out).

My father use to be a record collector, he received a bunch of record vinyls from spain, "plus or moin" 15 lps. well, it was on christmas 1983 and i remember very well he open the carton box with this faith vinyl album included and played it on the stereo!! the first track randomly chosen was the drowning man, i felt scared and had nightmares with that sound!, he didnt liked it, so he gave it to me! i was 9 years old then.

I didnt like the cure till 1985 when local radios airplayed close to me! our radios use to be british oriented then!! so we had reaaaally good music!
later i learnt the lovecats was a local hit in 1983 by reading an old local mag!

First time I saw them was the final wembley show 24 july 89 on the
Prayer tour what a night didnt have a ticket only went as the box office was still selling tickets on the night . That would nt happen now .
Still rates as a top concert in my mind .All 4 wish shows at olympia another highlight never knowing what was around the corner.

There was a radio station in town that my mom (and, by extension, my brothers and I) listened to that played a bunch of '80s music at eight every night. For the most I didn't like the songs they played, but when I finally switched radio stations five or six years ago, some songs still got airplay on the new station. I realised that they were only playing the ones that I liked and later discovered that most of them were by The Cure.

The old station played mostly KM - Wish songs (with an emphasis on Lovesong and Friday I'm in Love).

The radio station I listen to now played a number of Cure songs frequently (Boys Don't Cry, Just Like Heaven, Friday I'm in Love, 10.15 Saturday Night, Let's Go To Bed, Close To Me, Lovesong) and, when I finally had some money of my own, I went out and bought Staring at the Sea and Galore.

Things faded for awhile then, about six or eight months ago, I bought Wish and I was back. I've got all of the released Cure albums (no Blue Sunshine though...) and a slew of rarities.

So that's my story.

I was 13
and I saw the name a lot in magazines and stuff, but it was always linked to 'goth', but in that periode I was really into the goth thing. I didn't really listened to it up until a dutch comedi show made a parodi of them with the a forest song, I was quite struck by the song, it was just the normal a forest version luckally, so I decided to listen to them and I started with greatest hits caus I thought that would give a good impression of them after all those years, and of course I was impressed (and luckally forgot about the goth thing too, as I thought it wasn't goth AT ALL).

I discovered The Cure very late, just two years ago. A friend of mine, Marian, is a huge fan of The Cure, she has been showing it to me since march of 2004 but I started listening to it at the end of that year(september/october). Now I have everything they have done! it took me a lot to find all the things and I have spent all my money on them, here in Argentina everything costs three times more...I wish I was born before so that I could know them from their begining jaja   :-D

Well, when I first heard The Cure it was in 1988, when I was 11 (I probably had heard some of their songs before then, but this is the earliest that I can clearly remember). The song was Just Like Heaven. A year or so later, I heard Lovesong and Fascination Street on the radio...by the time I started buying albums (around 1992-93, with lunch money) I had been sucked into the whole Seattle thing, and it wasn't until the summer of 1995, that I truly discovered The Cure. It started off when I borrowed the Concert album from a friend of mine, which led to me buying Wish, Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography, Standing On A Beach and Disintegration - all in ONE DAY. And what a glorious day it was! Everything I had been listening to up to that point suddenly felt insignificant. Within two weeks after that, I had the entire Cure back catalogue up to Wish. I was 18. I spent the next year or so learning how to play all of their songs on guitar and bass, and not listening to much else (Radiohead's The Bends was the only other album I would listen to).

So, I suppose I grew up with The Cure...they had always been there, waiting for me to give them the great big hug they deserved.

I picked up a copy of PORNOGRAPHY from a second hand place in the mid-90s.

It was the greatest discovery of my life.

I remember listening to it and thinking
'this band is my band, for life. i've never heard anything that has captivated my entire being like this' :smth020

The next day I went out and bought FAITH & THE TOP. And a week later when I had earnt some more money I got DISINTEGRATION... and so on and so on. It was such a great time to have so many albums to choose from!

I don't remember the first time i listened to the cure because when i was a baby my dad was a fan (he's not anymore though "too old" or something like that.. yet hes crazy over U2 :?)
But when i was about 14 i was in a music shop somewhere in New Zealand with $20 and saw Seventeen Seconds which looked familiar so i bought it, with much enthusiasm from the owner of the shop (he scared me a bit, very excitable )
I remember listening to it for the first time and it was like a whole other world.. i had to sit down and was like "so theres no purpose to my life" !!
A line such as "17 seconds, a measure of life" is quite extreme to a naive 14 y/o!
I quickly got over it and bought everything else and got more and more obsessed!
But only after i bought everything did my dad tell me he had them all on vinyl still :smth011

VH1's Top 100 Songs of the 90s got me into them about 16 months ago. Just Like Heaven was #22. They looked very different and interesting though, so I figured I'd try them out. The first CD I got was Galore and their greatest hits.. I knew Friday I'm in Love, Lovesong, and Pictures of you through commercials and such. However, I also got quickly into a few of their other songs. My two favorite were High and A Letter To Elise, so I figured I'd buy Wish First. Then I bought Standing on A Beach, or whatever it was, and got into their Faith songs. Next, I bought The Head On The Door, since I was really into Inbetween Days and Push (First saw it on Festival 2005.) Then I got Disintegration. Thanks to Itunes, I can buy a lot more. I think the next album I'm going to get is Faith.

It was a long time ago for me...I was sitting at my Mum's kitchen table in the early 80s watching one of the Saturday afternoon music video shows when the video for Primary came on.  I was completely captivated - it sounded so different to everything else at that time and I remember thinking "who is this?"...Now here we are some 25+ years later and I'm still captivated...

"How I Came To Love The Cure"

CHAPTER ONE: THE DEPRESSION

It all started in 7th Grade when the general public refused to deal with my emotional and learning-related issues (such as ADHD), the student body refused to deal with my lack of interest in anything mainstream, and decided to make my life a living hell.

CHAPTER 2: THE CURE FOR DEPRESSION

Soon after the year ended, I was pulled from that school system and sent to one that better fit my needs: a school for teenagers with emotional problems, most of which have experienced some kind of trauma in life, or are having trouble with their behavior. It was then that an old band I had heard once or twice on the radio was brought into my attention.

My art teacher, a huge fan of the band, was playing "STARING AT THE SEA: THE SINGLES" during art class one day, and I inquired, "Is this The Cure?" to which he stated it indeed was. I enjoyed the music much, often asking him to bring the CD in each art class so I could listen. I was pleased to know I wasn't the only one out there who felt isolated at some times, who felt they weren't worth a dime, and other times carried themselves with bravato.

CHAPTER 3: THE OBSESSION

The words spoke to me, my problems, the music dug deep into my soul, and I knew I had to have more of this "cure". I went home and spent an entire day on Youtube looking at all of their videos. It was then that I realised that I wanted to BE Robert Smith.

After a while of indulging myself, the band became an obsession, one that could not be topped. And though they were often insulted to my face, I would usually just return to the offender a kind "f*ck YOU! THEY'RE BETTER THAN THAT CRAP FALLOUT BOY YOU LISTEN TO!" and continue enjoying the sounds of early gothic rock and post-punk that had become a part of me. Literally. My wardrobe is changing daily.

CHAPTER 4: THE EFFECT ON MY LIFE

To this day, The Cure are a very personal experience for me. Upon hearing an insulting comment about the band, it's almost as if that person is insulting me, for I relate so well to what The Cure is preaching: songs of changing yourself to fit into a crowd, being confused about your self-worth, and various other gloomy odes.

The Cure is without a doubt my favorite band, and I can really thank my art teacher for that. Now we always talk about post-punk and New Wave...I much prefer talking to adults than teenagers my own age... :)

I didn't know much if anything about the Cure till 2002/2003 around the time i finished high school.  Lots of people told me the music i would write reminded them of the Cure and so one day i decided to look into them and see what they were like.  The first songs i heard were their more poppy songs Friday i'm in Love, Just like Heaven, Love Song.  All of them sounded kind of familar to me (i'd probably heard them before and didn't even know it).  It wasn't long after that that i bought my first Cure album (the greatest hits)  so i could get a better feel for them.  They instantly became my favorite band after buying Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me next, and then from there i bought one or two cure albums at a time till i had all their stuff.  It's an addiction now.  Long Live The Cure...

Nice to see you're addicted, nice to see... :-D Right now, I'm at the wild infatuation stage of my relationship with them. It'll be interesting to see if it will last till the end...I lament that there'll be a day when I won't care anymore....

Anyhow, I didn't consider myself a full-bloomed Cure fan until I went to a concert in February. That's when the switch gently started flipping over in my head, and I became MAD about them...However, since we're talking very first memories, I'll have to go a leetle further back...

Of course there's the diffuse image I have that may have come from a Cure documentary of sorts, but I'm not sure at all... There are two hands with a boy and a girl painted on them, and one hand "kisses" the other. Anyone who recognizes that?

The more substantial first memory I have is from the late nineties, sitting up at home one night on my own, watching an old, long Cure special on telly. It was a live recording of them performing songs in what I think looked like a pretty crummy, bad-lit, spartan-esque pub. The stage looked like a room with the fourth wall missing. I believe Robert was wearing a white shirt and sporting his freaky hairdo. I have no idea what show it was. Very fuzzy memory. I had decided to watch the special since I'd read a bit about The Cure in a magazine, and I was really into exploring more legendary bands at the time (my mom and dad spurred me on a bit), but I think I got a bit bored and went to bed after a while...I have no memory of any song from that show. I did find a few stray Cure songs after that that I liked, though.

Then we jump forward to me reading reviews of Bloodflowers on amazon.com, remembering The Cure was a band you should look into. That album, along with The Greatest Hits, were the first albums by them that I really explored, and came to love.

That's my little story. If anyone remembers the show, I'd love to know the name of it. Pretty sure it wasn't a show with some other band...

Hmmm, it was a very long, long time ago...
October '79, at West Runton Pavillion in Cromer, Norfolk (UK).
The Cure were supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees. (The Join Hands tour?)
From what I remember, The Cure were better than the Banshees, as Siouxsie was ill with a sore throat at the time.
I'm pretty sure I saw The Cure play there a couple of times, maybe twice in '79, or maybe the first time was in '78. My memory is a little hazy!
Anyway, I loved the band straight away, and have been a big fan ever since.  :smth020
By the way, we were so lucky to have the Pavillion... I saw a huge amount of bands play there: The Stranglers, The Clash, The Jam, The Police, The Sex Pistols. A lot of the punk bands played at Runton in the late 70's... A lot of rock bands played there too, like Motorhead and Def Leppard. We had a few good local bands that played there all the time too.
It was a funny place, like a big shed in the middle of nowhere, but the acoustics were good, and it was cheap to get in!
Plus you stood a good chance of meeting the bands after the show at the bar. Lemmy of Motorhead liked a pint!
I heard somewhere that The Cure had left grafitti on the dressing room wall. I always wonder what it said.
The whole place was demolished in 1987. Shame really - good memories!

Oh, I see. But why did you leave? I'd love to live in the UK, or, well, I could try it, for a while...see if I can handle those fitted carpets you seem to be so fond of, hrm, hrm...I might be heading off to Brighton next year to study, and be closer to Robert of course. I had no idea he lived nearby when I made the plans. Or perhaps he's moved?

Oh well, better leave room for posts that are more on topic. Still haven't found anything new about the mysterious live recording I saw...

I discovered The Cure via the radio around 93 when I heard Friday I'm in Love. Yes, I know, overplayed, blah blah blah, but at 13, I was more into bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, TOOL, NIN, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. I always enjoyed what I heard on the radio by The Cure, but being a teenager in the mid 90's that was also somewhat of a jock, it was not "cool" to like anything other than what was popular in the weight room or at beach/pool parties.  A few years later, Galore came out, and I built up the courage to purchase it at the local Tower Records (R.I.P.).  From Galore, I got a taste of many songs I had never heard, and soon thereafter, I purchased every album up to Galore.  Though I will always like the aforementioned bands, mainly because I grew up with them, The Cure quickly became one of my favorites, and to this day, still is.   :D

The first time I listened to the Cure was around 1985, I think. At school, in my classroom. All of us students were supposed to do a sort of presentation of a song by a group of our choice, we would sort of describe the song or whatever and then play a tape of it for the whole class... So a guy happened to choose The Cure and the song was probably "Close to me", although I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, I thought it was kind of cool but paid no more attention to it.
It was only about 1 year later, by the time the "Standing on a Beach" compilation was issued, that I by chance managed to catch "A Forest" on the radio and I was completely stunned. I had never in my life listened to anything quite like it. I supposed right then I became a Cure fan, although I didn´t immediately like all the songs on the "Standing on a Beach" LP (which was my first Cure record, of course).

It was preety funny I think...Couple of years ago I was going thru hard time. And what is best for depression? Yeeeaah - sad songs! :D Somewhere on the internet I found some text about The Cure and their style so I tried to find some music to "test" it. And what songs did I find for my depression? "Friday I'm in love" and "Boys don't cry" :smth043 :smth043 . I was like "WTF?! Great joke...". For few months I didn't even hear one note of The Cure music until my friend lended me Disintegration. It was it!!

I saw The Cure on the Paris stream of the Live 8 concert. I was watching it to see Placebo. They played 'Just Like Heaven' and 'Boy's Don't Cry'. I liked the songs but somehow never ended up listening to more of their stuff. (I have no idea why!)

A year later, a band I liked did a cover of 'Charlotte Sometimes', then I checked out The Cure again and fell in love.

Ahh...the first time.  Remember it still quite vividly.  Before I was introduced to The Cure, my musical tastes as an early teen were quite tame and undeveloped.  Up until I was Cure-ed, I simply listened to whatever was on the local top pop radio stations, or whom or whatever was making a big splash on MTV at the time (back in the mid-1980s when MTV was actually a legitimate music video outlet).  Duran Duran had been mine and my friends' pre-teen introduction to the world of fan devotion to a pop band.  The Duranies were the first real band that I became attached to and who I followed with great interest.  What can I say, I was only about 12 or 13 years old or so when they were hitting big.  Rio was the first true pop/rock album I ever owned.  I really wasn't interested in popular, mainstream music, or at least collecting things relating to a specific band, until my friends and I fell in with Duran Duran.  That was towards the end of my first epoch of musical evolution.

The next major seismic shift in the direction my musical evolution would take occurred around 1986, when a good friend of mine that I had gotten to know in junior high school (the 7th to 8th grade here in the States) wanted to play me a cassette of a band that he had become quite enamored with.  I had no understanding of the "alternative" or "underground" music scene by this point.  If it wasn't on MTV or pop radio, I probably knew nothing about it.  He showed me the cassette case and on the cover was a picture of a wizened, gnarled old man's face staring at me, with a patch of a desolate, spartan landscape just peaking out over his right shoulder.  The title of the album read, in unadorned type face, THE CURE: STANDING ON A BEACH - THE SINGLES (AND UNAVAILABLE B--SIDES)  (DOUBLE PLAY CASSETTE).  I had no idea who The Cure were or why my friend was so worked up about them.  I listened to the first few songs and thought it sounded a bit strange, but not bad.  There was no instant connection.  I had no reference point for punk rock, except for bands whose name had become synonymous with that form of rebellious rock like The Clash or The Sex Pistols.  This stuff didn't sound much like anything I had heard before.  Slightly arty, slightly snotty but sort of empty, or unfinished in places.  I did think that "Boys Don't Cry" was pretty good though, even on that initial listen.

I wasn't immediately taken with The Cure sound enough to go out and grab any of their albums.  After months of listening to my friend talking enthusiastically about them and wearing his Cure t-shirts (I believe he had either an Inbetween Days colored faces one or the famous Boys Don't Cry w/Robert's back turned to the camera or maybe both).  Other friends and acquaintances around that time, going from junior high school to senior high (aged 14-18), were also wearing the shirts and talking about The Cure.  I decided to just give in and see what the big buzz was about this band.  Eventually, I picked up a cassette of the Head On The Door album and my musical future with the band was writ large from that moment onwards.  HOTD was the Cure album that really shook the musical fruit from the tree for me at that impressionable age.  I gorged greedily upon whatever I could gather up after that.  Along with The Cure, my friend slowly began introducing me to more of his favorite music, like Toy Dolls, Depeche Mode, Echo And The Bunnymen and so on.  By then though I was hooked and began branching out and investigating bands on my own.  Whether it was called "Alternative Rock", "Modern rock", "Death Rock" whatever, I was all in.  I started dressing up all in black, blow-drying the hair up and out, and wearing the pointy-toed shoes.  I also began wearing some Cure shirts of my own by that point :).  My first live Cure concert was quite the event, too, as it turned out to be the Dodger Stadium show on the US 1989 Prayer Tour.

The memories of certain people and places are intrinsically linked with the music of my teenage years, none more so than The Cure albums from The Top to Disintegration.  The Cure will always remind me of that formative period of my life.  Seeing the current lineup down in California recently, where the whole journey had begun for this humble Curefan several decades prior, was immeasurably satisfying.  I felt 15 years old again, excited and giddy.  The memories came rushing back.  If only my friend Jeremy were there with me to experience it all over again.  Wherever you are these days, thanks, dude, for turning me onto this band.

Good Lord, it was so long ago now so it seems.  First Cure song I was not played by the Cure.  This cute boy I was crushing on all through middle and high school played a few songs at a middle school talent show.  They played a Floyd tune, a Cars song and another one I didn't know, so I thought it was an original.  It wasn't, it was a Cure song.  :)  Can't remember which it was, but it certainly sparked my CURE-iosity.  I found Concert at the local movie rental place and it really got inside me.  From there I slowly started building my collection and devotion to the boys.

There was so much about these guys that really got to me, and help on tight - Roberts words, his playing style, Simons bass lines (and his gorgeousness if I can be fangirlish for a moment) but - just everything spoke to me at the time.

I can't remember...

I remember Close to Me, Friday I'm in Love, Lovesong, etc from the radio in the 80's but I never really got into them until my friend gave me the Galore CD for my birthday.  I  really enjoyed that disc a lot.  Then when I purchased the Trilogy DVD a few years ago, it blew me away!  I didn't know how good of a musician Robert was until I saw that (The Kiss solo blows me away) show.

My love for the Cure started back in my HS freshman year of 1982.  it was was funny because i was at that time a Jock who hung with the heads.  i was the QB for the school football team, partied like a rock star and listened to More Heavy Metal than anything.  One saturday night i went to a party where someone had just bought the Pornography album and i was hooked on the first track.  "One hundred years" is brilliant.  "...Ambition in the back of a black car"...words like that are epic.  i kind of got away from them when i joined the military in '88 to focus on my career.  i got back into them when i went to Saudia Arabia during Desert Storm and haven't taken a break from them ever since.  i finally went to see them for the first time in Chicago on May 17th and even though Robert thought his voice was awful, God himself could not have done any better.

Hi!  New here.

About ten years ago, when I was in high school.  I heard "A Night Like This" while hanging out with some "theater kids" and seemed to be consistently hearing about The Cure from the older people I was hanging out with at the time, though I also had vague memories of them from childhood.  Then one day I finally went into a used record shop where you can listen to cds before you buy them.  I found a used copy of Wish.  Within the first minute of "Open" I was completely hooked.  I bought Wish and later Disintegration and the singles from both of those albums and became completely immersed in The Cure from that period.  Then, a couple months later the whirlwind of collecting every album, single, and video in all formats began.

I feel so young XD
I just started listening to them last year because of their appearance on Korn's "MTV Unplugged" album. I listened to the "Make Me Bad/In Between Days" mash-up and I thought, 'Whoever this Robert Smith guy is, he has a good voice; I shall look for more of this Cure-band's material.'
Less than a year later I already own almost all of their albums, a handful of singles, and three of their live shows.

Part I:

I came in touch with The Cure for the first time back in the end of 1988 in the age of 12. At that time I was listening to A-ha, Kate Bush and other more or less "special" pop musicians. At the schoolyard it was a mode to bartering posters and clippings (very typical in the Ex-GDR) from hot Rock and Pop stars. One day a friend of mine asked me if I probably would have something of The Cure for him. My answer was: The who? Then he showed me a picture of Robert Smith. I liked his style and replied that I want to listen to that band before I grab something out of my tattered BRAVO magazines. He gave me a polish tape ... Pornography. Back from school I listened to the tape and was promptly infected. And no, I had no The Cure posters for my friend anymore. "Disintegration" came out and my adoaration for The Cure aggravated boundless until 1992.

Part II:

"Wish" was released and disappointed me. In October 1992 I went to the Berlin concert which was boring in some way. My enthusiam faded more and more. When one is young such "mere nothing" are enough for losing interest. After many years I rediscovered The Cure again and went to the second of the awesome "Trilogy" concerts in Berlin.

You were listening to Kate Bush at 12? Very good taste. :smth023

I'm pretty sure my first time listening to The Cure was through the Crow soundtrack when I was about 12 or so. And of course, Burn is usually very highly regarded, and it does have what some consider the "classic" Cure sound, so it helped create the image of them I had in mind for a while. I bought Galore some time after and remember loving Catch and Close to Me especially. I never did have the sense to buy any proper albums until I heard Killing an Arab a few summers ago and thought this band must be quite special. So I started getting the albums, starting with Disintegration, and I've been in love with The Cure ever since.  :)

I must have first heard The Cure around the time of The Head on the Door album. I remember hearing Close To Me and Push, and of course the great video for the former, but for some reason I just never got into them. I would have only been about 7 or 8 when I first heard them, so I didn't get into music seriously until I was maybe 12, and by then I wasn't listening to The Cure. It wasn't until my now ex-girlfriend came along, who is a HUGE Cure fan, and she got me listening to them. So I guess I was in my mid-20s when I got into them properly, but it isn't like I wasn't aware of their existence.

i have a very similar memory of 'push': i must have heard it many times on the radio when it was released, because later, when i discovered 'the head on the door' i instantly recognized that song and was very happy to have been able to "find" it (i had had no idea what song it was by the time i had originally heard it). somehow it had left a mark on my memory, even though i wasn't even really into listening to rock/pop music back in '85.

I think "Push", like "Close to Me" and even "Lullaby", just has a certain sound and feel that is pretty unique. These songs stayed in my head for years and years, but I never really knew who they were. And then when I heard the proper tracks off the albums years later, I was like, "Oh THAT'S who did that song?! I remember hearing that in 1980-something!"

That's why I love The Cure  :D

I had heard The Cure before but wasn't really into them but last year around December and January I heard songs like Lovecats, Close to Me, Just Like Heaven and Inbetween Days on a TV radio thing called Retro Active. When they played the songs there was a picture of Robert Smith and some facts about the band. I fell in love with the music and Robert Smith ! LOL I went out and bought The Cure at the time that was the most resent release. Since I had looked them up on youtube I knew a few new songs like Taking Off and The End Of The World. Then I would take CD's out of the Library and looked all kind of stuff on the internet. I also wanted to buy some things so I looked on ebay and saw that there was going to be a new single coming out! I looked everywhere to find out more. Then I found out they were on tour and that they were doing a concert near where I live so I begged my mom and dad to take me and here is the story for that....

Sometimes early 80´s in a small place a couple miles from Gothenburgh. A friend of mine put on Primary and I imidiately asked him to "turn that crap off" or I was out of his place in an instance. A few weeks later after I returned home he sent me a mixtape containing one side of XTC and one side of Cure. A few listenings and I was stuck.

Don´t you think I owe him?

My story:

I was 14 à 15 years old, my first album I had from The Cure was Wish, in MC version, (was in that time my favourite). Than I had Standing on the beach MC, KMKMKM MC, Mixed Up MC.

And the following live CD's:

CD called "M" live at L'Olympia - Paris - France - June 7th 1982
CD double called "Easy Cure" live at Bremen - West-Germany - 30-10-87
CD double called "Darkmen" live in Leysin - Switzerland - July 6th 1990

I loved this music so much, but I missed all the live gigs in my country, because off not knowing, friends with other taste of music , ...

Than I grown up and lost for a few years my favourite music  And on a day in 2003 I heard Robert's voice on the radio, with the collaboration "Da Hype", and I said, Hay they still exist  :D

And than I start searching and decided to go to Werchter in 2004; and from that magical moment I start loving The Cure again in a deeper sense. I bought all I could. And now I'm addicted and owner of 291 different cure-songs  :-D

I need to hear a cure song every day, to make my day good.
No other band can give me this feeling, by hearing there music, no other band can give that magical feeling.

Now people call it an obsession, but hey "I DON'T CARE"

They were a three piece back then and instead of having a band as back-up they made a film "Carmage Visors" which went for about 45 minutes and was a mixture of animation, photography and film.  I fell helplessly in love.  And I still love them 29 years later!!!!

I found a copy of "The Walk EP" in the used record bin at a store on "the ave" in Seattle 1983. Loved it Just One Kiss especially blew me away. Been a fan ever since.

Good stories ranging from 79-08!

Pre-fandom:

I had The Lovecats on the LP "Now 1" in 1983 - I liked the song, but that's as far as it went, really.  I was into pop like Kajagoogoo and Michael Jackson! But I remember listening to a Cure concert on the radio, must have been 1984.  I remember thinking they were harsh and punky!   And they didn't play Lovecats!

Fandom part 1:

Heard Lullaby on the radio in April 89 and loved it instantly.  Bought the 12" of it the next day.  (The 12" mix is still my fave Cure song.) Flipped it over and heard Babble and Out of Mind - these made me think of that old "punky" concert I'd listened to in '84.  I dusted off "Now 1" and played Lovecats - thought it was weird how they had such different sounding songs.  Bought Standing on a Beach (vinyl) and was astonished how many songs I recognised - I knew most of side 2, the poppy stuff.  Had no idea it was The Cure that sang The Walk!  I was now a fan.  Starting with Distintegration, I had bought half their back catalogue by the time I saw them live - only 3 months after buying that first 12".

The inbetween years:
I went off them in '91.  I'd discovered and moved on from goth music to industrial - all my friends went off them in a snobbish way.  And I was young and followed suit.  Silly really.  I sold all the records except Disintegration.

Fandom part 2:
Picked up Staring at the Sea cheap on eBay in 2001/2 as I felt like being nostalgic and I no longer cared what anyone thought. Quite liked it, but it sounded a little weird after all that time. Bought the CD of Disintegration in Spring 2004 and I was overwhelmed with memories of the summer of '89 and love for those songs.  Bought the back catalogue all over again (this time on CD).  Saw them at the Move festival in 2004 - it was like being reunited with my first love.  :D

I think I was about seven when my friend let me have Galore because she decided she hated The Cure. I left it on the floor of my room for a while before I gave it a listen - and immediately feel in love. I had never heard music I could relate to so much, with such feeling and passion, with so much emotion. It completely changed my life. I listened to that CD on repeat every day for about three years before I went out and got The Head On The Door and Disintegration. I proceeded to drive my family and friends crazy with those ones, as well. :smth020 And, many years later, The Cure is still my favorite band, and 99% of the music I listen to.

I grew up listening to them.  My mom was a big fan so I guess I've heard them since I've been born, but I remember when I was young, I would always listen to The 13th and Strange Attraction.  My first album I bought was Boys Don't Cry when I was 4 years old, but I usually just listened to my moms and uncles CDs.

discovered them in '89, i was 15. it was finding a light switch in the dark for me.
when my daughter was little i would sing her cure songs since i didn't know any lullaby's or kids songs. she was quite fond of songs from "disentergration". my little act that went with "lullaby" would have her giggling like crazy and "untitled" was the 1 sure song that would calm her down when she was crying.  needless to say she has become an avid cure fan.

I didn't know it at the time, but when I was around 6 or 7 I saw some music show on tv and I remember Robert's hair, I think they showed a clip of Lullaby and Just Like Heaven. It kind of scared me, but I am glad I know who they are now...the best band ever! :-D

hello

i a new member and was reading some of the topics here and i came across this and thought why not make my first post among my fellow cure fans about my first cure experience.   well in it was in high school and i was aware of the cure through a girl who i really liked.  she used to wear this big white sweater with a large pict of robert's face.  although i did not know much of their music, what i did know was that it seemed that all the "artsy" people really liked them ALOT.  anyway, i remember being at a party and this guy put on the mixed up album  and i head "close to me" at the moment i did not know who the band was but i remember really really liking it ALOT.  well i went out and got mixed up and listened to it and fell in love with it.  then i got "wish" and that was just fantastic.  but i never went any deeper than that for a while.  i do remember in 1992 when the cure came to pittsburgh i was with a group of people who managed to get front row seats to the show (with that girl i really liked btw) but i was not able to go to the show.  still have the un-ripped ticket.  but that was it for a while, well until 1996.  the cure did not do much during that period due to some legal stuff i guess. but they did release w.m.s in spring of 1996 and they toured that summer.  well a group of us who liked the cure got together and got tickets to the show.  to be perfectly honest i did not have any idea what to expect but i was looking forward to it.  what i saw and heard floored me, it was so good i can't to this day describe it.  i clearly remember walking out of the show with this girl anna saying "my god, i never thought they would be that good".  and they were, i could not believe it, just amazing.  well from that point on, i have been deeply into the cure.  went back and got all of the older stuff, fell in love with so many songs, have not missed a tour since and will never miss one again.  what i feel about the cure, and i am sure that some of you do as well, is that i feel so much like those songs so often.  for example, in a letter to elise the lyrics describe the end of a relationship of some sort and robert writes ... and the promises broke and the make believe ran out.  I can't tell you how many times i have felt that way at the end of a relationship, just like that.

I got into the Cure just last year around this time when I took a trip to New York for Thanksgiving. Before leaving I was listening to my Ipod and came across a song that I had never heard before (most of the songs on my Ipod where downloaded by my mom so there was a lot of stuff there that was new to me) So I come upon this one song that makes me go back to it over and over again, its just so different and something about it makes me feel so good. I look at the title and it says "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure, and I was like "The Cure?" hmmm and then I proceeded to finish my homework. So skip to the New York trip I am shopping in a little clothing shop that my mom used to go to all the time (she used to live in New York) and we see some cool t-shirts. My mom gets a DEVO one, and I see this awesome David Bowie t-shirt (it was blue with him wearing an eyepatch) anyway it looked really cool so I wanted to get it, but low and behold they only had larges and it was WAY too big so I was really disappointed. So I look and see if there is another t-shirt that is cool and I look at the bottom row and see this black one with a guy standing with his back to us, a guitar jetting out from his side and a tangled mess of hair that looks oddly familiar, like I'd seen it somewhere before a long time ago. I tell the guy to show me that one and when he turns it around the name "The Cure" is on the back and Im like" Oh my gosh its the guy who does that song that I like!" So I buy the t-shirt and soon start flipping through my Ipod to see if there are any more Cure songs on it. Only one other 'The End of The World" is on it, and I play those songs all the way home. When I get home I do some research and discover all the wonders of the Cure. My first few videos I saw where "Lullaby" "Just Like Heaven"  "Close to Me" "Friday I'm in Love" "LoveCats" I was hooked, and this interview sealed the deal Robert Smith of The Cure Interviewed in 1985 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvy_uEuVvac#) The first cd I got was the "Best Of" for christmas and bought my first cd when I was looking at a college to apply for, There was a booth that had old cds and I was like "they've got to have some Cure" So I found "Staring at the Sea" and  "Disintegration" and the rest is history:)

My friend Jan had the Boys Dont Cry LP (the export version of TIB with the early singles, the pyramid coverart) and taped it for me when A Forest first became a hit. So I had that tape and bought the A forest single and was instantly hooked. What a different band! One year later the band toured in the circustent for Faith and I saw one of those gigs - i hardly remember it but it made a lasting impression because ever since then the Cure has been a part of my musical life even if their output post-Disintegration doesn't realy appeal to me.

1986 ish, went on this road trip , listened to head on the door, the first notes in the kyoto really grabbed me, i liked the album except for screw (still a tough one for me) and got a lot of great memories from that album, to this day probably my favourite ( though disentegration is flawless ) i have a special fondness for the non single tracks like push, six differant ways, and sinking   it was a great trip , i @#$%^  this hessian chick while listening to the album a second time (unfortunately it was my first time "doing it" and i didn't make it past the second chorus of inbetweendays , nowadays i can make till the end of the song  )

Before I was a big fan, I had heard a few bands cover songs by them, one that comes to mind is AFI's Hanging Garden. Then I read that one of my favorite bands, Deftones, listed The Cure as a major influence so I decided to give them a listen. Great Decision, I listened to Pornography and liked probably half of it originally but the high points were really good. I've listened through most of their discography now and it is safe to say they are my favorite band.
Favorite 5 albums: Pornography, Disintinegration, 17 Seconds, Kiss Me (3x), and Faith

Hello to all of Cure fans around here.

My first time with the cure as a fan was when I borrowed all the tapes a friend of mine had in order to find the Lovecats! I didn't expect to fall in love with Seventeen Seconds (and later Faith) while I didn't have Japanes Whisper in hand so I bought the first album that came out after this experience. It was around 1991 and Mixed Up became my first CD of The Cure.
After this I felt it was possible for me to get the rest of it (and I did it). I now own nearly all the LPs, some 45 RPMs and all the CDs (and remasters as well).
The only concert I have seen was in October 1992 in Lyon, France. It was one of the best live experience I have ever had (the best one was Frank Black in 2001).
I must admit that for more than 20 years they are my favourite band and even though the new material is not as good as I can expect they keep the rank.

Hi All, since I am new here, I think it's good to start with my first time.
For me it was around 1989, at the end of primary school. The girl that was sitting behind me used to listed to the cure and since I was madly in love with her (no laughs please!), I decided to start listening to the cure too to ahem ... you know, catch her attention or so....
My first album was concert, the cure live. Desintegration followed and it just carried on from there .....

Hi I'm new here :)

I started became a fan when I was 17. I was staying at my college's hostel at that time and I was bored to death then I remembered a South Park episode with Robert Smith innit (I'm pretty sure most of you guys have watched that episode!) and then I decided to youtube him and then I found Disintegration. The moment I listen to the song I think I just experienced "love at first listen". And then I listened to other songs like Lovesong, Fire In Cairo, Pictures of You and I love them all. Since then I've became a fan of them and I'm just so happy to find The Cure. Well I guess I can thank South Park for that :D

On the NME channel when I went through a stage of blindly loving The Smiths (still love em) and it was The Cure Vs. The Smith and I was giving it all 'come on NME! The Smiths are superior' then the 'Close To Me' vid came on and I thought wait a minute.... Looked up a few of their songs then proceeded to download their entire back catalogue. This was a while back. Then I finally saw them live at Reading last week! Wow :D

I think I first heard The Cure when I saw the video for The Caterpillar on television.  At the time I thought it was strange, and I think I was too young to appreciate it (I was probably 9 years old).  A few years later I heard Boys Don't Cry at a school dance--the guys in the A/V club would play a lot of popular top 40 tracks for most of the night and then right at the end of the dance they'd play one or two songs that they liked or that some desperate artsy kid had requested.  That's when they played "Boys Don't Cry"--right at the end of the dance.  That's where it started for me.  It was like, "Oh my God, there's a song that fits ME."  After that I got Standing on a Beach, The Head on the Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (which I believe was brand new if I've got the timing right), and all the rest as soon as I could scrape together the money.

I was fifteen or sixteen years old and my very first single I bought was a release from Amiga (East German record label), seven inch, Close To Me with four different B-Sides (including New Day). Robert, Simon, Porl, Boris, Roger and Lol could be seen on the cover. I found that somewhat unusual. But I knew next to nothing about the past. That should change soon. I played this record up and down (among others). That was the first step. At that time I had not yet attended concerts or festivals. After the fall of the Berlin Wall I bought Staring At The Sea as an LP and a little later as an MC. The MC was even more awesome because all the early B-sides were on it. But I wasn't really a fan yet. Even Disintegration had little impact on me. However, when I heard This Twilight Garden on the radio, it was all about me. And a Faith bootleg eventually changed everything. I had never heard anything like this before. That was about 1992. And then I was twenty years old.

I found a whole collection of Cure's cassette's covers... no actual cassettes were found though... that is very weird, plus there would be a nice thing just to keep for old time's sake but pooof!!! they were magically gone... :/

In 1989, MTV was playing highlights of different bands doing a live performance (5 second clips). One of them was a long haired pale-faced guy singing "Show me show me show me how you do that trick". I was intrigued.

Later that year, I saw the video for Fascination Street and was hooked. A friend of mine had Disintegration on cassette. I borrowed it and only got into half of the songs at first. Over time, the others grew on me and it is still my favorite album of all time (not just Cure, but of all albums ever released).

how's that possible? the tapes were gone by magic?! now that you mention tapes, I need to get a good vintage tape deck cause I have about 100 tapes from my teenage years that I would like to listen again (including the 'Standing On A Beach' that has the B sides and 'The Top' Brazilian edition!)

My first time was in a movie called "Gypsy 83" Just Like Heaven was playing in the background when the scene was taking place in a graveyard. It was the most beautiful thing I ever heard! <3 Then there was "Doing the Unstuck" in another scene when the 2 main characters were just frolicking in a park & dancing & having fun, but then some stupid guys came & trashed their ride. Love you Cure!!

I first loved The Thompson Twins and my mum told me about her 200+ cassette collection in our garage which contained 1 Thompson twins cassette which was their album "Here's To Future Days".

It was a 30 something degree (Celsius) day and my garage gets extremely hot so instead of digging through all of the cassettes to find one, I took all of the boxes full of cassettes to my room to look through them.

As I was looking through I saw heaps of bands that I had heard of and never actually listened to, some of the cassettes were a few of The Cure albums.  (My mum would buy records and CDs of the cure albums and then record them to cassettes).

I decided to play the "Standing On A Beach" singles album and instantly loved The Cure. I had also heard a few songs of the cure, such as Lovecats, on the radio because my family used to travel long distances by car and all I would hear were 80s hits.

I never actually found the Thompson twins cassette but I did find many of The Cure's albums on cassette, which is a better blessing! XD. I have a hundred or so of the cassettes in my bedroom in cassette drawers, I owe my mum!

- first time ever knowing it was The Cure: opening "Les Enfants du Rock" (as I'm French and more than 40) in 1987 with instrumental version of 'Just Like Heaven'
- first dance song making me wonder why I didn't notice it before: 'The Lovecats' in 1990 (in a pub in Ireland)
- first album: 'Mixed Up' the day of its release (and the rest soon after)
- first concert of the Cure: 1992 Halle Tony Garnier Lyon (France). funny thing is that I will see them in 2016 at the same location

In 2002, aged 18, I was flicking through channels very late at night, about to go to bed, when the song playing on VH1 really caught my ear. The video showed a bunch of guys standing in the snow and I remember that while the song was not extremely catchy (I was more into pop back then, from A-HA to Saint Etienne) it struck me as being seriously good. I remember how long it was as I was waiting for it to end so I could learn what it was.

The next day I went to my favourite record shop and asked the guy who worked there - and older friend and a total musical guru - about Pictures of You by The Cure (he had mentioned them to me in the past as "one of the great alternative bands of the 80s"). He said "yeah, but it's the heavier stuff, maybe you want to listen to The Head on The Door first"? I went for Disintegration and became a massive fan!

Sometime later my friend started listening  to cure and she borrowed cure album from her older brother and thats when i realised what great band it was.. my first cure cd was "Galore" bought it on a school trip to Gothenburg.

Fascination street video on mtv. Was a Mexican-American middle school jock living in south Texas. Had no interest in wimpy European music. Ha. I liked MC Hammer. But, there was something strong about that song. Made stuff like Duran Duran and Thompson Twins look like joke bands. Then lovesong. Then lullaby. I was intrigued. But, then a bunch of supremely unlikable kids started to bandwagon them and DM. Disintegration and 101 t-shirts were everywhere. Some kids wore those shirts who didn't even like the music! I liked it, and was ready for something new, but then I discovered Neworder. Substance was out, and ceremony was a little closer to my idea of rock music. After the t-shirts went away, I kind of backed into the cure and Depeche mode again. U2 and INXS also caught my attention. The cure was just one of the bands I liked. Then I moved near Detroit where they had an actual alternative radio station broadcast from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Got into the Jesus and Mary chain. Lemonheads. Siouxsie. Psych furs. wish came out. Achtung baby came out. I considered those albums equal for awhile. But, u2's stuff faded for me. It remained pretty good, but the cure's album had layers and layers of increasing excellence. My favorite song was high, then letter to Elise, then trust, from the edge of the deep green sea, then open. I didn't even notice to wish impossible things back then, but it's prob my favorite nowadays. I've never found music that could do that. Songs that could suddenly burst to life after years of familiarity. I've never really considered another band the cure's equal since then. Closest thing I could name would prob be led zeppelin, but they don't fit my aesthetic the same way. Sorry for rambling. I just don't really have anyone to share this sort of thing with:0)

My brother made me a mixtape of new wavey/post-punk type stuff in the '80s that had "Close to Me" on it. That was a good tape, as I recall.

Curious about how everyone here got into The Cure  (merged - :cool )

I can't resist a pun like that... :angel Anyway, I'm interested in when and how everyone present here decided they were definitely a Cure fan.  So please, fire away - extra Brownie points for extended answers!   :winking_tongue

Briefly, for me - random encounter with the Cure album Bloodflowers on my husband's iPod when working outdoors, in 2014!  For him, the song Burn when he was watching The Crow in the cinema in the 90s - it all went from there.  I'm being unusually brief here because I've been more extended about that elsewhere...  :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Maybe also name your personal favourite albums / songs, and why... I'm really interested in how people's own life stories mesh them with certain kinds of music (and art, books etc).  :)

Tut tut. ;)

Hm, "decided" - this is a different question to "how and when did you discover The Cure?"... (which many of us have answered before here in the forum, but I'd be happy to do again and again...)!

As mentioned before, I first heard "Inbetween days" in 1985 and bought the album "Head On The Door", but I don't think at that point I'd "decided" to be a "fan". I got some more albums of course, but not all of them (yet). In '87 KM KM KM was released and I was impressed by the variety of sounds & songs on it.

However, I guess it was later, in 1989, when I made sure that I was a "fan"; after "Disintegration" came out I bought more of the old albums, namely "Seventeen Seconds" and "Faith" were missing in my collection, so I got these two (on vinyl) and put them on a tape (which I listened to in the car). For me, I think this was the point where I (kind of) "decided" to be a life-long Cure fan!  :cool

Dear @Ulrich, I have a problem with the word "discovered" because it's often used in weird ways, like "Captain Cook discovered Australia" and "Isaac Newton discovered gravity."  I don't think I've ever personally discovered The Cure, but I did at one point decide I was a fan of their music, as opposed to I just casually liked a song or two!  ;)

It seems to me that maybe the word "fan" is not amongst your favourite words?  Considering how many " " " " are clustered around it?  I suppose it's short for "fanatic" and if that's the case, I'm not a fanatic, I would call myself a consistent appreciator... :)

Well I did discover The Cure of course, without me they'd be unknowns still... :winking_tongue

I'm undecided as to when exactly I decided that, maybe in '87 already? KM KM KM was a great album to listen to back then.
On the other hand, in '89 I got myself the book "Ten Imaginary Years", which of course gave me more insight into the band and their "history" - ideal for being a "fan".

...which reminds me, has anyone here ever tried to do an online search for "The Cure" and got pages and pages of stuff on cancer?  And then searched for "The Cure - Music" and got medical cures for various ailments, involving music?

We don't have KM yet, @Ulrich - or a whole swag of recent Mike Scott releases - but they're on the list.  I suppose I have things to look forward to if noone else in the world makes any decent music ever again...

Had heard songs before on the radio but Fascination Street and Lovesong really jumped out to a 13 year old me. I didnt fall in love until 1994 and Burn which caused me to go backwards in the catalog and then not too long became my favorite artist period which has remained to this day.

So late to the party but still!

My turn. :1f636:

Firstly, I have to say that my favourite band is not just The Cure.
Those are Depeche Mode, David Bowie, and The Cure.
In a particular order? Depends on how you look at it.

I must have become aware of the name "The Cure" around 1987, I guess.
That's when it definitely started appearing on the TV.
My memory gets hazy here, and I really have to dig deep, but I seem to thinly remember Why Can't I Be You? and Push. Those two songs were not absolutely unfamiliar to me on first conscious listen, but I may be confused.
I also remember seeing a Cure band photo in a magazine (I remember thinking "six! why so many people in a band?").
My next memory was watching the Lullaby video on the telly. I remember my mother hating it, and I was not particularly impressed at the time, but I found there was something intriguing about it, it was not a video like the others. The odd fella on the video looked like a horror movie Buster Keaton or something.

Then I became a Depeche Mode fan. Sorry, but that was my first true musical love.  :winking_tongue
The record that truly got me into music was Violator. More exactly, Personal Jesus.
However, I was already aware of The Cure as a band, and Cure fans, but I hadn't listened to them.

And the next memory was a friend passing me a burned tape with some songs in it.
Among those, two by The Cure - Hot Hot Hot and Never Enough. I liked them. Those were the two first Cure songs that I actually listened to.

But...

I happened to buy Entreat (not Disintegration), out of curiosity. I loved it. And there was that odd fella saying "I surrender" on the cover.
Took me a couple of listens, but I was astounded by the 6-string bass guitar. It sounded very different to Depeche, The Beatles or Pink Floyd.
Then right after I bought Mixed Up. I liked it.

However, what really turned me into a Cure fan was when I decided to buy a third cassette.
That was Concert & Curiosity. Particularly Curiosity.

In short time I got hold of the whole discography, as I had already done with Depeche Mode.

Faith and Pornography made quite an impact. Much more than Disintegration.
Disintegration, even though I adored and it definitely is one of my desert island records, felt "commercial" at the time (I didn't completely master English yet).
But, truth be told, my actual most favourite Cure recording is actually a bootleg. Paris Olympia 1982.  :1f631:

More or less at the same time, my grandmother was dying of cancer, and as we had no spare room at my parent's home (she had lived elsewhere), she had to sleep in my room as my younger brother was a toddler, and I had to endure all of her agony every night during months (years? memory gets hazy) until she was taken to hospital with me having the full certainty of her never coming back, and although nobody ever told me she wasn't coming back... there was no need, Although by the last weeks she and my brother had swapped rooms, as the situation was... well, not pleasant to anyone I guess.
I was left alone at home as my brother was with my other grandparents and my parents went to the hospital.
I didn't cry (not then and there). I'm not certain that I've ever fully recovered from that.
So, in a way, there was a girl in the corner (of my room).
With a Cure poster, looking in? I'm not sure it was there yet. Depending on the exact dates, that would be a certainty. Memory gets hazy.
It must have been... 1988/1989, more or less, give it or take a year. Definitely before 1992.
That is when I started to dress in black. I don't anymore, but there's still that nagging feeling that I should.

When High came out in 1992, I remember me rushing to the record shop.
Then Wish came out, and I was slightly underwhelmed, but still liked the album a lot.
And I went to see them live. That was deafening.  And cherry on top, they played "The Figurehead".

But after Wish... came other bands, and mainly Bowie, which I already liked (as a kid I sneaked into my uncle's bedroom at my other grandparents home and found Ziggy, Space Oddity and Transformer), but I truly became a Bowie fan with Outside. Still am, of course.
And also Depeche Mode too, of course.

And finally, Wild Mood Swings came, which was a letdown.

That made me not buy Bloodflowers (which I do like a lot) until much later.
Still went to see them play though.
I became reconnected with them... dunno, must have been the Trilogy? But then the next album was a disappointment.
Must have been at the news that Porl was back.

A mystery tape that appeared then disappeared.

It was summer 1987 in England, I was in my mid teens and into pure 80s pop, when I spotted an old C90 cassette that had been left on the stairs at home. I took it up to my room and played it, finding it to be a recording of the charts on Radio One from back in 1984, a year before I'd started recording songs from the charts myself. I asked my brother and parents if they knew who the tape belonged to but no-one did. All I remember of the rest of the content was that it had The Pointer Sisters' Automatic and Phil Collins' Against All Odds, both of which I quite liked. And it also had on it this strange song with an even stranger intro by a band called The Cure: The Caterpillar.

I'd only seen the name The Cure twice before to my recollection. Once on the Now That's What I Call Music Volume 1 record we had - one of the tracks I didn't play - and also, significantly, penned on the bag of the girl I was friends with and obsessed with romantically at school, Charlotte. That was enough alone to pique my interest, I had to understand what was so good about this band.

So instead of skipping the track, every time I listened to the tape I tried to get my head around this song, and quickly it grew on me, from 'WTF?' to 'hmmm, interesting' to 'yeah, this is kinda good' to 'wow'. Next up: dig out the Now 1 album. The song was The Lovecats and it had the same effect on me immediately.

Within a few weeks I was at the record store and buying the Standing On A Beach singles and B-side compilation cassette, which of course included the dark and brooding Charlotte Sometimes, the perfect soundtrack to my unrequited love. I followed up by borrowing the Boys Don't Cry US import album at the local library, and a few weeks later buying teh Seventeen Seconds cassette. It showballed from there.

And the mystery tape? Disappeared as suddenly as it came, to who knows where and who knows when... I'd love to know!

P.s. advice to the young: one's life can become mythologized. This sounds like a story that could be misremembered and embellished over the years, or worse, it could have been true yet the now-me takes it to be mythologized. But it's not, and I know because I kept diaries in my youth. If you can, do the same. And don't be tempted to destroy them later, no matter how embarrassing they may seem in later years, as even that will fade, while the truth of who you are will not.

Great story, @MAtT !
And, well-told. You have a nice story-teller's rhythm to your writing.
I don't know how you're spending your life, so far, but if you need a little encouragement to dig back in to that dusty ol' novel on the shelf, here's a little Push:

That was DEFINITELY 1987.

I saw them in a magazine. Can't remember whether Roger was in the photo or not.

And some time later ( :beaming-face ), one hairy punk told me "what's up, chav?", and then he told me he liked The Cure.
I was left a bit puzzled, because I figured out he'd like the Sex Pistols or... Iron Maiden ( :D  :D  :D ).
At the time I thought The Cure were just another Ibiza synth band (oh, no, this is my undoing...).

In 1987, I thought they were imbeciles.  I was a serious teenager, and at the time they kind of looked like The Wiggles (not that The Wiggles had been invented back then).  Well, The Wiggles with eyeliner and gravity-defying hair.  At any rate, something you'd encounter on Playschool.  :angel

Well when I first heard "Inbetween days", I didn't know how the band looked, thus to me they seemed like a "normal" 1980s pop group (e.g. Spandau Ballet). Only a bit later, I read those articles in music paper and saw some photos...

First time I remember I was listening a tape with on one side U2 demo's in Holland and on the other side the head on the door. This was in 1986 my first encounter with the Cure, I was 14 and totally shocked. My first album on vinyl was Pornography. In my opinion the album with the most impact my whole life since then. My first concert was in Thialf stadium in Heerenveen, Holland in 1989, Disintegration.

...nice Nosferat,
Am a bit jealous of first seeing them in 1989, did you see them over the years after that too ?

Im curious where the tape came from?
I had a similar event that made me fall in love with the Cure, a double-sided cassette tape with the Head on the Door on one side!
My story was that I bought a tape from an 'op shop' (store in Australia where 2nd hand clothes and items are sold, incl some records & tapes), probably for about $1. In someone's hand writing it had scrawled the name of the albums: on one side The Cure -the Head on the Door, on the other David Bowie -Scary Monsters. The audio was perfect, and amazingly each album fitted perfectly on it.  I had never heard these albums, but from what I heard until that point I liked the music I had heard from both of them. ...that tape was a milestone, as I quickly became a huge fan of both The Cure and Bowie, and those are some of my all time favourite albums to this day.
I always wondered who had created the tape ...what a great gift it was.

The tape was a gift from someone who knows that i loved U2. The other side (the Cure) was a coincidence.
After that i've went to almost all the concerts in Holland, and one in Germany (2008) except for the festivals. Recently, 2018,I bought tickets for the concert in Hyde park London. But after a huge problem with my car, more than € 2000,- damage I've decided to sell the tickets. Still sad about that. But we've got Cureation.

when i was a little, mum and dad sometimes played some the cure songs because in their youth they listened to it themselves (unfortunately they are not such big fans as me)
but that conscious moment when I listened to it a "first time" happened when I was 10 years old

my dad and I were walking late at night in the park and he play some music, it seems, "letter to Elise" or "just like heaven" .. I don't remember anymore .. but I remember Robert's voice and dreamy music, which was wide and airy like the sky,  it was incredibly beautiful and it impressed me so much that I still remember this moment .. before that I had never heard such dreamy and wonderful music, I don't know .. my childish ear immediately singled out a bunch of features that I really liked very much,  and when I got my phone, I added these songs to myself ...
when I started to become a big fan and listen to "the cure" in March of this year, I recognized a lot of songs, because I heard all this in my childhood :))
I was especially fascinated by lullaby and pictures of you as a child, these are magical memories ... it's funny that I heard almost all the songs at night or in the dark, I love the night
