On Second Thought...
THE CURE SHOULD JUST PLAY ALL OF THEIR SONGS, IN ORDER!

Okay, but please not in order. I think it would be borig if I knew wich song they play next. I need the surprise and the screaming when people recognize the song after a few seconds. :D

Yes, you're right, Tristan! :)
Even if I heard Robert announcing the next song title called 'the drowning man' just a bit more than a months ago in Szeged, Hungary, I screamed and screamed and screamed in spite of I'm an old man :-D because it was hard to believe in the first second that they'd
really play one of my very favorite song!!! :D (and this song was played only once this summer! Yes, I guess I was lucky with that!)
Good point Tristan... I was thinking to "historically"... I think randomization would be best... not to mention completely jaw-dropping.
i was just wondering what everyone would pick as their dream set by the cure? il put mine up tomorrow, would love it if they played just some at my first show.

if they played that at a show I went to I would be happy

Bloodflower has very little time, actually; that thing was written in three sittings, between work and the like. This is how I chose to spend my little free time. Is that all right? I enjoyed doing it; fantasy too often outstrips reality. I do take a bit of objection to the notion that I should spend more time listening to The Cure. Have you
any idea how often I listen to them or for how many hours per day? It's said reality destroys dreams, so enjoy them as fully as you are able before their destruction.
Do you never dream?
Wow there are some excellent choices on the above set lists! If ever I had the honour to interview the Band, I would ask how on earth they choose their set lists!! How can you pack so much product into a 3 hour gig??? 3 hours is 'never enough'... poor bastards standing up there for 3 hours! It's a long stint, thank goodness they're so excellent at their jobs and so willing to please the fans!!! What a Band! :rocker I have to mention that I would really love to hear 'exploding boy' and 'harold and joe' at the forth coming Melb. gig on the 12th August! I also note with joy that alot of people like 'icing sugar' too! In my memeory banks somewhere I have the knowlegde that the band may consider doing another DVD type gig and play Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me in it's entirety... oh my f*cking god - could you believe that? How brilliant!!! I would also love to hear The Head On The Door in full!! (dribbles all over herself!)

I've heard whispers of performing an album in-full, but nothing so specific as Kiss Me. Just kind of general rumblings, mostly things of little repute. I hope they do.
And I hope they decide to play another Trilogy set of concerts, but with different albums. The Head on the Door / Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me / Wish would be fantastic, but this bit is just wishful thinking.... Though, to be truthful, I'd rather see them play Seventeen Seconds / Faith / Pornography.....
Looking at some of these setlists, it's nice to imagine that some of these would be real.
But hey, what about this? Here's a nightmare setlist.
In Between Days
Just Like Heaven
The Walk
Let's Go To Bed
The End Of The World
alt.end
From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea
Encore:
Why Can't I Be You?
Boys Don't Cry

Not that I really dislike any of these songs, but I'm sure some of you will see my point...

I would say it other way: Bloodflower really made a nice compilation. The many details just show how big Cure fan he is. That's cool, indeed :smth023

yes that would be pretty nightmarish...
but i got inspired about this concept, so how about this:
lost
kyoto song (a very loooong version)
us or them
give me it (yes indeed: it was utterly superb around '84 but just because i'm afraid it would sound pretty awful if they tried to play it today - sorry brian)
cut here
just say yes
last dance

boys don't cry
encore 2:
inbetween days (with some korn guys)
boys don't cry
encore 3:

ok....
while the idea of some more albums-in-full performances is a nice thought, i'm not sure it would be a good idea.
i think those performances rarely even work in live setting and considering that i think trilogy worked pretty well.
but if they started doing it more... i don't know. for me it would lose all its taste and meaning i guess.
and i didn't even see the trilogy shows and i do regret it - but still, i don't really wish they'd do it again. i just think some things are better when they are one-off and that's it. toying with the idea is nice though but that's it.
just my opinion.
A nightmare setlist. Hmm....
01. Never Enough
----I really never want to hear The Cure play this song again. Never again. Never.
02. Us Or Them
----See: Never Enough
03. The End of the World
----Either Robert can't pull it off now, or this incarnation of the group can't, but something's wrong.
04. Boys Don't Cry
----Don't need to hear it again.
05. Just Like Heaven
----Not without keyboards.
06. In Between Days
----See: The End of the World, Just Like Heaven.

I suppose it's all a matter of taste; if, for one, adore the Trilogy DVD, so it's hard for me to look at it and say "Better not try again." Thinking about it, The Head / Kiss Me / Wish would make a bit of sense for a Porl-involved Cure to do, though it is virtually unthinkable without a keyboardist. I suppose it would be kind of gimmicky if it became their thing -- performing albums in sequence -- but that's about as good as gimmicks get.
And I don't think another Trilogy would cheapen the P/D/B trilogy, especially for those who don't feel that P/D/B is the 'real' trilogy anyway. I think adding another trio would only serve to add another element, not reduce the potency and meaning of the first element. If that makes sense....

i think those performances rarely even work in live setting and considering that i think trilogy worked pretty well.
but if they started doing it more... i don't know. for me it would lose all its taste and meaning i guess.
and i didn't even see the trilogy shows and i do regret it - but still, i don't really wish they'd do it again. i just think some things are better when they are one-off and that's it. toying with the idea is nice though but that's it.
just my opinion.
If that makes sense....
well i uess i have to disagree - but no problem about that. :smth001
for me it would be useless to do it all over again
i just think the idea of playing albums in full always sounds better in advance than it really is in reality. often the idea can seem great at first (because yes, it would truly be something awesome, what a feast for fans!). but then again when one really starts thinking about it, what would be the real point? i mean, really
why repeat it all live in the same order as it appears in the album? what would be the motivation for it? just to make fans happy? i don't think that's the one... or to make the listeners feel like they were safely listening to the album through the venue PA with a few dudes miming it on stage hehehe? ;) ok that last one was maybe a joke... but i think since the live shows sort of do provide an opportunity NOT to keep everything in fixed order then it's a much more better idea to go along with than sticking to the album structures.
and that's why i think playing albums in full should be used only on special occasions, when the artists is really trying to point out something to the listener. trilogy had some notion behind it, it wanted to establish the certain spiritual connections between those three albums, despite the long stretches of time that separate them. i think robert smith was trying to say something with it. and it doesn't depend on the idea whether or not pornography/disintegration/bloodflowers is the "real" trilogy or not (which it even isn't for me, by the way). it was not just a selection of albums documenting the band's career so far etc. but it had a kind of "mental artistic arch" (what a clumsy expression i know - sorry i can't think of anything better now) behind it that goes much deeper than that.
so compare that with the idea of playing head/KM/wish back to back: what would that "trilogy" try to point out? even if it would surely sound pretty damn good and delicious idea, i don't see anything special behind it. what's the aim? there's no connection between those albums, similar to those of trilogy. it would be more or less superficial, done for more or less purely for reasons of entertainment only.
that's why i don't think that things like that should become something common - and by the way no-one really seems to do it so much at all which i think also might prove something. because if it was a superb idea in itself i guess people all around would do it more... but they really don't. so...
(i also think the main problem would be that they couldn't do all the songs on those three albums (head/KM/wish) anymore - and i'm not just talking about the lack of keyboards there.)
:smth001
As far as them doing another 'trilogy' concert, I believe Mr Smith pretty much ruled that out in the interview on the end of the DVD... I'd have to watch it again, so I may be wrong. But I believe it was on there that Mr Gallup mentioned doing a whole album as a concert would be a good idea, they got the inspiration from Bowie to begin with... and he suggested KISS ME as the album he would enjoy doing the most... again I would have to watch the DVD again to see if this is all correct - my memory banks do tend to fail me at times I must say!!!
I think I remember Robert more or less saying he wouldn't do it again, but he's known to change his mind. (The Cure will never be used in commercials!)

yeah, it was in the DVD extras when they were talking about the bowie inspiration and all of that
then robert mentioned the idea doing KM in barcelona, or somewhere, but im fairly sure he was joking which pretty much rules the whole thing out.
i dont think they should do another one anyway... as someone has said, too 'gimmicky' and semi-pointless
and as much as i loved trilogy and despite the amusement, i think i'd rather go to a show where they played a bunch of different songs that spanned their career over a performance of a full album.
probably just me though.
I think im probably barred from this post after my earlier comments
(which were not meant to offend - Im in awe of Bloodflowers inspiration and attention to detail - and I do remember sitting down at night and going through the setlist of the show I just attended and imagining how it could have been different - Guess Im just old and grumpy now)
Anyway- I would love to hear Wish in its entirety - i love how the album flows and the mood changes within it, I imagine it like a recollection of an evening out - starting out with Open, working its way through each track to End. Brilliant.
And Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Head on the door need no further comment.
I would really like to hear more of The Top album. Live it tracks are something thats really missing from my collection, despite having a few shows from that era.
I'd quite like to see Robert and Steve Severin do a Glove show. Play all of Blue Sunshine, some Severin stuff, some Smith stuff..... I'd want Robert on vox, though. I think Blue Sunshine would have been better with Robert on vocals anyway....
(And I suppose I'm in the minority, but I very much like the 'period' demos from the Blue Sunshine remaster; they're wonderful.)
now that would be interesting, I hadnt considered a "non cure" live setlist
how about this

Dredd Song - Judge Dredd

I would relish any more work from the Severin/Smith team, and have said so on Severin's myspace (or was it the Banshees myspace - I forget now!) But I really like the way that Jeanette Landray sings, and I have an admission to make, I try to sound like her when I sing along! I also try to sound like Mr smith too, but thats a given really!
Also I'm wondering 'mikmcc' where these songs;
da hype

yesterdays gone
come from?!? I'm not familiar with them!

give me it (yes indeed: it was utterly superb around '84 but just because i'm afraid it would sound pretty awful if they tried to play it today - sorry brian)
While it's true this song in'84 was as good as it gets. '85-'86 were good as well. But yeah, now it might be troublesome as Robert doesn't have the chops he once did. Still, it's one I'd love to hear live, with or without Porl on sax. Preferably with :D
Now I'm curious why you list 'Last Dance'? Is this just because they are a quartet now or you simply don't like the song? It's another favorite of mine. I actually prefer this one to Same Deep Water as tops from Disintegration. Only by a slim margin, but still the better track I think. The lyrics just really get to me whenever I have that one on.
following are collaborations
da hype - junir jack feat. RS on vocals
perfect blue sky - Junkie XL feat RS
Believe - Earl Slick with RS
truth is - tweaker feat RS
yesterdays gone - Reeves Gabrels feat RS
anyone want to add any others - is there a topic for this?

But yeah, now it might be troublesome as Robert doesn't have the chops he once did.
but this is exactly the reason why 'give me it' is on my list: yes it's a superb song but if the question is/was what would be pretty bad to hear them doing
today then it's another matter completely.
i think it's very wise if they don't try doing things they really can't do anymore. so sax or no sax, i'd prefer to not to hear it over hearing some kind of a try, a remnant of something that once was.
i'm afraid it would only make one sad.
about last dance: first, i have to say it's still the best song in the list that i made, sure. but other than that, yes i think it always was a pretty weak track: musically it's shares the same kind problems with those of 'kyoto song': not strong enough material, and overly long and also lacking some necessary dramatics because of all this. i also always thought it was lyrically weak too, these "woman was only a girl" - well i just find that somewhat cheesy, or something. not sure what. anyway slightly annoying, somehow.
i always thought there was a really good reason why especially 'last dance' was omitted on the LP version. and i think it was a good decision considering the album structure too: 'lovesong' - 'lullaby' works much better without such a song there in between those two. so if and when they had to omit something from the LP i think this was a good choice. actually i admit that i often tend to skip this track when i listen to the CD version.
yet it's not that the LP version was perfect to me either: ive always thought it was very very unfortunate that 'homesick' had to be omitted the same way. it definitely does have its place there, after 'disintegration'.
so LP or CD, neither is really perfect i think...

;)
Probably not my perfect setlist, but songs I would like to hear, purely because I am not aware of them having been played live, and a few of them are quite good songs.

nothing against burn of course but you see i'd be forced to leave right after it of or otherwise its nice memory would be utterly destroyed by dredd song!!
I'd just love them to play Possession. :D
I would be happy anything played for the first time, however it would also be good to hear it played well! I admit Dredd song sounded better when I first heard it on the radio, I am sure that the version I have is different - were there any edits?
Lucky im In Australia - we'll be amongst first to hear any new album stuff played - havent got my ticket yet - I know no-one that is remotely interested in going.
Should I attend (fingers crossed) - I will get setlist up ASAP - obviously that will be my perfect setlist for that moment.
Because I like making these so damned much....

Okay - so here's something I've thought might be cool (it might suck too)...
At the end of A Forest, as Simon is playing out the final notes, have him go into the intro for Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne. The band wouldn't necessarily need to cover the whole song, but at least the grinding guitar riff at the beginning of Crazy Train would be fun to hear, especially with Porl tearing it out.
Again, it might suck, but I think it might be cool too...
Any thoughts?
...in view of 2016.

and that's why i think playing albums in full should be used only on special occasions, when the artists is really trying to point out something to the listener.
I think the same and The Cure adapted successfully this idea to transport
a specific mood over the whole evening. That's why I've been focused mainly
on Wish/WMS/The Cure/4:13 Dream to create my list, though The Top is my favorite one.
I hope the encores will not fall under a random sort of thing, possibly destroying the atmosphere.

Not bad,but I can't agree with alt.end and The Walk, although most of them
have a proper 'Time to go' potential,if badly placed. :?

Not for me, I would never leave a show during "inbetween days" (first Cure song I ever heard) or "Just like heaven" (one of the most perfect pop songs EVER)!

OK.My list is deliberately shortened to have more space for the
announced rarities,'new songs' and even Greatest Hits.I know we had
some discussions about the encore section, but this thread is somewhat unique,
to form a good cross section. However,I won't give any guarantee for the time after
180 min, mainly because of my condition and health. That's it.

I see. Of course a 3 hour+ show can be exhausting! I don't think I would leave, maybe watch/hear the rest from a "quieter" place at the back or so (I think I might've done that in Munich years ago on the Dream tour... it wasn't sold out, thus I was able to walk around a bit during the show and try different "points of view").

No Porl? Wow. He's a member of The Cure even when he ISN'T a member of The Cure. Glad you included A Strange Day though.
Without thinking about it too much, I'll take the first night in London 11-26-92 with The Big Hand. Gotta throw Underneath The Stars in at the beginning. Only one other opening number is its equivalent, Plainsong. Open is good, but only with the three guitars in 1992. Something missing after that. 2005 versions are good too, if only for the novelty. That's doing it a bit of a disservice but...oh well.
