Title: Music for Hallowe'en
Post by: SueC on October 19, 2020, 14:59:39
Spooky, strange, spine-tingling... any genre.

I moved the topic, as it's definitely about "other artists".

Well when it comes to "Halloween" I normally am not looking for any particular music (unless I want to celebrate "All Hallow's Eve" - which I usually don't)...

However, a song titled "4th of July" seems a little bit out of place to me. ;)

I would instead go looking for tunes titled "Halloween" or "All Hallow's Eve"!

Indeed, this year I might go digging out this old CD:

How about this?

Or this?

Honestly, I didn't know this was going to be released today, when I posted the above!!

I'm still waiting for @Ulrich to guess which Cure songs I would have put on here if he hadn't moved it to the section which says "non-Cure"! :winking_tongue  :-D  :angel

There's a packet of gummy bears up for grabs.  The one that I thought was really obvious, and the one Brett thought was really obvious.

I personally don't care about the titles, I'm picking on mood, and 4th of July deserved to be here on the strength of that - plus, I think if you didn't know the title of that composition, you'd never guess by the music.

One clue:  The Cure song I thought was obvious would be picked as obvious by its title, by those who care about that - but I chose it for the mood!  :)  Oh and Brett's choice, my barely cryptic clue is Shelob.    ;)

Those who don't like gummy bears could opt for celery sticks instead (because I am eminently reasonable  :angel)...

The other section clearly says "non-Cure" too!!!!  :pouting-face
"Halloween music" definitely belongs into the "other artists" section, as this is about music (we don't get too many topics about pottery or sculptures or paintings or...)!

From the description of the "something else" section:

Haha, this is too funny:  Two Germanic extraction people championing systems of order!   It's like two French nationals getting in a tizzy about baguettes, or two Italians debating Parmesan, or two hippies juxtaposing their tie-dye techniques / favourite mushroom spots.  :angel

I guess to me it is a double whammy to have "OTHER artists NON-CURE music" as opposed to "Something Else, Non-Cure-Related Topics" and the first seems an even more forbidding place to file a thread which will contain ANY music including from The Cure... I remember this doing my head in when I first joined this forum (hmmm, I can't post The Cure in Other Artists or Other Artists in The Cure, it's like matter/antimatter), and so I just placed everything "mixed" in "Something Else" in the end, and stuck with it.

There is an easy fix:  If you change the wording in OTHER ARTISTS to "non-Cure music or threads containing a mix of Cure / non-Cure music" or something to that effect that's perhaps worded less legalistically and a bit more snazzy, I mightn't get nightmares about posting The Cure in threads which are supposed to be about OTHER artists NON-CURE music...  :1f631:

This might also help new people decide where to put something like this... :)

There's still gummy bears for the first person who can correctly guess the two Cure songs we thought would be obvious for this section.   :cool

PS:  Does "Something Else" need a knitting thread, perchance?  Or perhaps some embroidery?  ;)

You are a bad person, you mentioned "the Cure" in "off topic" repeatedly now, ban is close. (Or maybe it is not, we can just let you away with it, was we did in the past...)  :winking_tongue

I know, I know.  :angel  But please note, I didn't actually post any Cure clips here since you've moved the thread - I'm still hiding under the table!   :-D

...and waiting to see what happens if someone posts a Cure clip in this section...

PS:  Brett often says to me, 'I wonder how often Ulrich gets up in the morning and says, "Right, today I'm gonna ban someone!"'  :yum:

...because if he was a moderator he says he would be really tempted to do that...

Ban. Off topic section closed and deleted. Forum closed until Xmas.

Or maybe not.

If you get tired of looking out for "Halloween" or "All Hallow's Eve", you might as well try and look for music about "Samhain".

QuoteSamhain (pronounced ˈsɑːwɪn/ sow-in) marks the beginning of the "darker half" of the year. It is celebrated from sunset on 31 October to sunset on 1 November

That's lovely, @Ulrich!  :)

Here's a suitable instrumental I've liked for a long, long time...

Nope, sorry, these sound nothing like Hallowe'en, at least to our ears!  :)  I don't pick for this on title - although sometimes you'll get a suitable title because the artist picked one for that track - and this is the case for one, but not both, of our mystery Cure songs!  ;)

Think spooky, strange and spine-tingling - and forget about the titles to guess these...

And hey, surely Shelob should be a clue you can decipher, to help you guess one of them... :angel

Here's a track sufficiently strange and spooky to be able to include for my Hallowe'en list, and it's funky at the same time:

Well there are lots of those on the early albums (1980-'82), e.g. "all cats are grey"...
another one I can think of (title too!) is "Fear of ghosts" (b-side, 1989)!

I'm clueless about the clue.  :disappointed:

I haven't heard All Cats Are Grey enough times to remember the tune, but it may well be spooky.  It's just not one we were particularly thinking of.

Full marks for Fear of Ghosts though - that was the one I was thinking of.  Very dark and spooky.  :smth023

Ulrich, Ulrich, you have before you the great oracle of Google if you can't remember that bit of Tolkien's mythology I'm sure you must have seen when Lord Of The Rings came out.  :yum:

Avail yourself of the great oracle.   :angel

And then I'm sure you'll make the connection to Brett's pick.

You're halfway there!   :)

I am imagining young Ulrich in primary school, and the teacher is asking, "What is 2+2?"  And Ulrich is thinking, "It can't be 4 because that's too obvious!"  :winking_tongue

Congratulations - you have cracked both of the mystery songs!  :smth023

And I would post some favourite versions of them in this thread, but I inexplicably keep having nightmares in which I'm being chased by stern librarians in black capes and accompanied by hungry Irish Wolfhounds, calling, "You put a book back in the wrong section! You put a book back in the wrong section!"   :1f631:   ...the librarians are doing the vociferating, not the Irish Wolfhounds BTW.

You are now eligible for the Grand Prize.  As you don't like gummy bears, the committee has decided to offer a small jar of Australian honey instead, from the committee's own hives, extracted with the committee's own elbow grease, and sent on the high seas (probably, due to cargo space shortage on planes) during the pandemic to hopefully arrive in time for Christmas.  The committee assures you they can afford to send a parcel.  The committee just saved more than half of what they expected the outlay to be for old Cure albums, by shops wishing to get rid of such things that have sat on the shelf too long...  :1f62e:   (...what's the world coming to?)
