This one will please you, David.
http://post-punk.com/an-interview-with-slowdive/ (http://post-punk.com/an-interview-with-slowdive/)

They do like The Cure (no huge surprise, but nice to read anyway).

Quote
Rachel: That's Michael, our sound engineer.

Nick: Who worked with The Cure.

Post-Punk: Oh really?

Nick: So another connection, you see.

Post-Punk: I am a big Cure fan.

Rachel: So are we.

Nick: The best sound engineer they've ever had, apparently. Which is why he's back with us.

Rachel: Yeah! Hahaha!

Post-Punk: I wonder if Robert's a fan of you guys.

Nick: You know what, there have been times where there have been interviews that he's done, like on radio in the UK or print interviews, where he has dropped our name in as bands that he was interested in around that time.

Rachel: Has he?

Nick: Yeah, yeah. Ride opened for him at Wembly Arena back in, I don't know, '91 or '92 or something and they toured with Cranes, who at the time we were really close to.

Sorry I have not been around too much, but I am more focused on Slowdive lately as they have returned after 20 years. Saw them four times already and will see them for the 5th time this Sunday in Poland.

So far they were nowhere close to my home, but I hope it will happen someday.

No new recordings by Slowdive planned so far?

Meanwhile, there's this new "supergroup" planning an album:

Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite and Editors' Justin and James Lockey have come together to form a new project called Minor Victories, with the group's self-titled debut due out June 3rd.

The band recorded the album together even though they spent almost no time together in the studio: The collaboration was formed entirely online, with the members sending each other song fragments, ideas and finished recordings. Justin Lockey served as the album's producer.

"Starting a band where some of the people have never met each other is something I've never heard of," Braithwaite said in a statement, while Goswell called the project "the most exciting thing I've done to date."

Finally, a new album by Slowdive is on the way...

Quote
It was 22 years ago in 1995 when maligned British shoegaze pioneers Slowdive released their final album Pygmalion, disappearing into the sunset along with it. In 2014 they reformed, finally giving fans a chance to hear beloved late-period gems like 'Crazy For You' on stages throughout the world. But jamming old classics wasn't all the band were up to – they've been hard at work in the studio crafting a fourth full-length, and from what we've heard it's very, very good indeed. Let's get sad.

http://crackmagazine.net/article/music/features/slowdive-teenage-dreams-recovered/

QuoteHuddled into a booth at Shoreditch's ACE Hotel today, on the press cycle for their first album in 22 years, all five members of Slowdive are remarkably philosophical about the ordeal. "Just how it worked in those days," shrugs Neil Halstead, the band's chief songwriter and vocalist. Rachel Goswell, the band's slightly more gregarious guitarist and singer, concedes that Melody Maker and the NME's treatment of them was "very callous", but adds with a laugh that, "I always thought a lot of them were failed musicians." The only aspect that seems to still upset them was the music press' portrayal of Slowdive as rich kids, which Goswell dismisses as "a cheap shot; lazy journalism."

While it's wise to approach comeback albums with caution, the new Slowdive record feels like a fresh and vital addition to their discography, rather than a routine exercise in nostalgia. How would they characterise their artistic development? "Painful," Halsted laughs. "[When] we were teenagers it was quite angsty music. I couldn't even try to write the same way now. It's the angst of a middle-aged man at this point." "The depression of a middle-aged man, realising he's no longer 21," Goswell chips in mischievously.

During snatched weekends away from normal life and parenting duties, the five members of Slowdive convened from across the country to jam, with Halstead taking the sketches back to his studio in Newquay for further work. The point where it started to click, they explain, is when they decided to hire Oxford's Courtyard Studios, where they'd recorded the first two Slowdive albums. "We were comfortable there," says Halstead. "It's still the same; exactly the same. It has the same sofa that was there 20 years ago. And Chris [Hufford, Radiohead's manager] who engineered those records still owns the place, and he would pop in."

"I'm excited about the next phase because I think we've familiarised ourselves with being Slowdive with this record," Halstead continues. "Personally, there's some unfinished business in terms of where we go next as a band if we want to." In the meantime, I suggest that the new record is probably going to get glowing reviews. He can't help but laugh. "You mean we won't have to wait 20 years?"

Quote
Over two decades since being ran out of town by an unforgiving music press, reformed 90's shoegazers Slowdive are bigger than ever.

As with the album, "Slomo" opens tonight's show in majestic fashion, its shimmering guitar and woozy melody beginning an evening of blissed-out ecstasy, where lush layers of sound ebb and flow as guitarist Neil Halstead drenches Rachel Goswell's honey-sweet vocal melodies in deep reverb.

For every moment of meditative beauty ("Blue Skied an' Clear") there are others of heart leaping euphoria: the chorus to "When the Sun Hits" visibly takes the crowd aback. With its driving riff, new track "Star Roving" is Slowdive's catchiest number: it might even be their best.

They rework Syd Barret's "Golden Hair" to close, reaching Sigur Ros levels of sonic crescendo to leave the Roundhouse in a state of reverie. Far from being a joke, Slowdive are enjoying the last laugh.

https://pitchfork.com/features/article/why-slowdives-post-rock-masterpiece-pygmalion-still-matters/

QuoteThis majestic record became a cult touchstone for its ambient detours and post-rock experiments. Nothing else sounds quite like it, and Slowdive themselves fell silent for years afterward, save for side projects, only to finally reemerge with 2017's triumphant, self-titled reunion album.

Well they had a strong "comeback" album out in 2017. (Sadly I could not make it to the Munich show in early 2018.) I own this and an older album and an EP (1993). Plus I got a cassette tape with much of their old stuff from '91-'93.
Looking forward to the new songs!

https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/news/slowdives-nick-chaplin-discusses-the-bands-forthcoming-album-their-first-in-six-years

QuoteExplaining what it was like to release an album two decades after disbanding, Chaplin says: "When we released the record in 2017, I think it took us by surprise a little bit. When we got back together in 2014, we weren't really sure whether people were that interested. Clearly they were, and we saw that, but then it's like, they want to hear the old songs, and they're not going to be bothered with us if we release a new album with new material on it," he begins.

"Once that came out, people were really into it, and we started to get a new, sort of younger fan base from the back of that record as well, which took us by surprise. I think we were just a bit burnt out after we toured that record, because we were all nearly in our fifties."

Chaplin reveals that the past six years have passed by pretty quickly, and that Slowdive never really intended on making another album; it just happened. "We wanted to take a bit of a break and see what the next steps would be, and whether there would even be any next steps. Then a pandemic happened, which obviously meant that we couldn't really get out there and play shows for a couple of years," he says.

"I think a lot of bands maybe used that time to be creative and to go and sit in separate studios and email stuff to each other. We don't really work well in that situation. We work better when we're all together. We did try and do stuff remotely, but it didn't really come together."

Neil Halstead is the main songwriter and producer of Slowdive. He came to the band with most of the songs from Everything is Alive already fully formed, before they took them to different studios to put the Slowdive stamp on them, as some of the songs were laden with modular synths and going down a more electronic sound. As Chaplin attests, Halstead "does want to take risks and push things in different directions that maybe some of the rest of us are a little bit less comfortable with."

Despite the six years that have passed since their self-titled album, and the three decades since their debut, it's slightly difficult for Chaplin to say how he thinks this album represents Slowdive as a band: "It's been six years, but it doesn't really seem that long. I think as you get older, the years go by in a blink of an eye".

"We're probably just a bit more confident than we were before. But having said that, I think we all agree that there was a hell of a lot of goodwill and kind words written about the last record, because the band's story was quite compelling, whereas we don't have that this time, and so we have to sort of stand on our own two feet," he explains.

New album coming out next month and this song...

Title: Re: Slowdive are back!
Post by: Ulrich on September 04, 2023, 13:29:06
https://www.spin.com/2023/09/slowdive-are-more-alive-than-ever/

QuoteAlthough the finished product only reveals traces of it, everything is alive was originally imagined as an electronic record. Halstead was creating sounds with modular synths that he thought could work as a solo record. But instead of pursuing a more personal project, he shared the tracks with his bandmates.

"I have a studio close to where I live. If I'm not touring, I'm usually doing something in the studio," he says. "I was working on some electronic music that I hadn't figured out, so I repurposed some of it once we started talking about a new record. I didn't feel like sitting down and writing on a guitar. [Instead] this felt like a way to start a Slowdive record."

You can hear those synths pulsate through the undulating sprawl of "shanty" and the kosmische-esque "chained to a cloud." It's also hard not to recall vintage Slowdive on both "prayer remembered" and "skin in the game," which evoke Just For A Day and Souvlaki, respectively. But lead single "Kisses" feels like the biggest leap and something fans have long waited for. It's arguably their most melodic song to date...

Approaching 35 years since they first assembled, Slowdive are just happy to be together at this point — never mind making the best music of their career at this stage. The fact that they've been around longer since they reunited than their original run is not lost on them.

"It's a lot longer," Halstead says with some astonishment. "Originally we were only together for six years. It's weird. I remember being 24 when Slowdive finished and thinking, 'Well, that's it. Music's done now." Because I felt really old at that age, and we'd already been through the music industry, which is absurd. So yeah, it is ridiculous that we're making music at our age. Positively indecent."
