Tour diaries: Copenhagen
6/42 gig of The Cure's Lost World Tour

The day started very early. At 05:30 in the morning I woke up in Oslo to take a train to the airport. The Cure played Copenhagen and although I didn't have tickets at first, I was able to get one just two days before and even to a discounted price (so to those still looking for tickets, my experience so far is that there should not be an issue for you to get one even for 'sold out' gigs (maybe with the exception of Padova where The Cure will play at the smallest venue of the tour), so don't give up!)

The flight to the Danish capital (via Norwegian airlines) was scheduled minutes before 08:00. I paid nearly EUR 20 for the train to the airport and in less than 20 minutes I arrived. The airport is about 47km from the Oslo city center.

No delays with the flight and before 09:00 I arrived to Copenhagen's airport. It was very crowded compared to Oslo's. Got a day ticket to travel easily (by metro, bus, train etc) through the city. Unfortunately, I didn't have any more vacations, but fortunately, my company had an office a few minutes away from the airport. And with the new way of work set by the pandemia, working from there was not an issue at all. And even if they didn't have an office I could have worked literally from even a hotel room or a cafe.

Busy day at work and in a heartbeat it was end of business day. The Cure was scheduled to play at 21:15 (one hour later than all the previous concerts of the tour). I headed to a very cool bar, the Blue Raven (visit it if you are in Copenhagen) and met with @lacrima mosa for a few very good beers. We headed to the venue around 20:00, walked to the nearest metro station and passed on the way through a rather big police operative (+firemen and ambulances). We wondered what could have happened.

The Royal Arena is a fairly new venue (opened just five years earlier) with 16,000 people capacity for concerts. It was the biggest audience in the tour so far, and for the first in The Lost World Tour 22, organizers had the clever idea to have a merch stand outside the venue as well as one inside. This greatly improved waiting times and reduced long queues to get a Cure t-shirt which was an issue in other shows. The inside venue looked impressive, in a sort of cinema seating. The place was completely full. We headed near 20m from the stage, on the left side (audience perspective). Saw lots of people buying beers and drinking them inside the concert area. I am highlighting this because in Helsinki you were not allowed to drink beer in the seating or standing area which in retrospective it was a great idea: After the show in Copenhagen all the floor looked like if it was raining inside the venue, it was very sticky.

The band started shortly after 21:15 and by now you must noticed we skipped The Twilight Sad. Yes, they're good, but no, I don't need to see them every other day. This is something I reserve to only a very a handful of bands. In my humble opinion, I think Robert should have The Twilight playing a few shows, another band supporting another shows, etc. After all, this is a 42-dates tour and there are other great bands out there which people deserve to know.

By now, you probably know the what The Cure played in this show. We also took a picture of it at the end of the concert:

The Cure's setlist structure in the current tour is made of 1) a main set 2) a first encore 3) a second encore (at least for now). The final encore is what most of the audience came to see. You had to see how people stood up from their chairs for the whole final encore in Copenhagen. Yes, hardcore fans may not like 'Friday I'm In Love' but are songs like this the reason why The Cure sell out arenas, and we need to start accepting that.

Like in Oslo, the sound was perfect, the band played (almost) flawlessly (Robert himself highlighted his mistakes during 'A Strange Day and 'Friday I'm In Love'), Robert's voice in top form, and a new song since the beginning of the tour was added to the repertoire, one of Disintegration's finest: Prayers for Rain. While the show was by all standards nearly perfect, I wonder why certain songs are still included in the setlist. In particular, 'The Hungry Ghost', while lyrically interesting, is, musically speaking, forgettable. And a special mention for FTEOTDGS which is a great song, however, it could be rotated from time to time in favor of other Wish songs. 'Cut' perhaps?

The highlight of the night was again 'Cold', and we might witnessing in this tour the best live version of this song (in the same way we all agree the best live version of 'Push' was in 1986, or 'A Forest' in 1992). 'Charlotte Sometimes', A Strange Day' and 'Kyoto Song' surely made long-time Curefans very happy too. I still think Reeve's guitar needs more volume in 'Want' and I still don't like the fact that the guitar solo of 'A Strange Day' has those drums cymbals in the background.

The Danish audience was very passionate, the best I have seen since the tour started. Robert himself noticed this and said something like "you are really great". What I personally didn't like was the fact that lots of people were coming and going with six-pack glasses of beer. As mentioned before, you could see the effects of this after the concert ended.

A great night in Copenhagen and lucky to experience how this city has embraced the use of bicycles. Lots of fans used theirs to get back home and we tweeted about this. Susan, (Reeve's wife) also echoed this:

After the gig I took a packed metro, and went straight to sleep. Having been awake since 05:30 am I was way very tired.

Next up: Hamburg!
