I have no idea how many people might be interested in this, but I suppose that even if it is just one then it won't be a total waste of time. Anyway, Katatonia are a swedish rock band that are frequently labeled metal, but I don't think that most of the time they're much of a metal band – more like gothic/alternative rock with some metal undertones, perhaps. Their 3rd album, 'Discouraged Ones' might be an interesting listen because the singer there (Jonas Renkse) sounds very similar to Robert Smith around the time of 'Pornography'.

But the main reason for this post is however their epic track 'Brave', the opening song from their 1996 album 'Brave Murder Day' (their best album, IMO) Now, this is definitely metal, of the gothic/doom variety, but I also think that on purely instrumental terms many people here could actually like this. The thing is, this has also harsh vocals (cookie-monster type), done by guest vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt (of Opeth). He is very good, but definitely something not for everyone. Anyway, enough talking, here it goes:

And since we're at it, I'll also post one of the best songs (as far as I can remember) from the 1998 album 'Discouraged Ones', a track called 'Saw You Drown'. No real metal here, and the vocals really remind us of Robert Smith:
