Nah, not at all. An impassioned jeremiad on the horrors of aging, the dying of the light, missing the kiss of treachery and so forth I'm sure it is, it's rather short on the things I value about, say, Lullaby: melody and craft.

This is not to say I believe a linear melody is a sine qua non for a song - I'm at least as big a fan of Can and Captain Beefheart as I am of the Cure, and my favorite Cure songs include Give Me It and Snakepit... But I don't find Disintegration that good, for me it's one of the weaker songs on that excellent album.

Argh! It's one of my fave song, so i'm sad to read someone doesn't like it, but, well, that's how it goes, personnal taste, always different...

Hey guys :)))

That's always an interesting topic to discuss. After all being a fan does not mean loving absolutely everything the bad does, musically ;P

I absolutely hate Wrong Number. It drives me nuts. Seriouslly it gives me the same kind of vibe as visiting my dentist.

The effect of Robert whispering drives me crazy.

What do you mean Lisa? You're saying you hate his whispering style in general? Funny thing, for me this is actually THE most attractive way he uses his voice. I'm in love with all those whimsical sigs and whispers, sometimes listening in over and over, trying to actually hear the words...

I recently found a similar kind of vocals. The band is called Lights Out Asia. Really cool :D

Liza80

@ Mint. I just wish his vocals had been mixed a bit louder...

"Screw" was always one I never could really warm to... (much as I love the rest of HOTD).
Also I'm glad "harold & joe" was just a b-side! Not a fave at all.
The holy city breathed like a dying man...

merging this with a previous topic. I think the ugliest Cure songs are in 4:13 Dream with Freakshow being the worst ever.

Thanks D. And I rate freakshow among the very worst ones too.

Just not that good musically...
I don't know. This is the title track and the album version has set a high standard
for the live versions, which suffered a bit during the past. In other words: I'm surprised
that you don't like the song, however.

You know how Robert once said that he likes The Figurehead better than Lovecats, though the latter has a better melody? Well I don't   :D

Btw listened to Screw now: not half bad, a fun little bass-driven number. It has a hint of the "deliberately ugly" aesthetic he explored on parts of The Top, and it just comes together nicely. Certainly better than (what to me is) lazy, unfocused, atmospheric rubbish like Push.

MeltingMan

...which reminds me to note that 'disliking a song' from The Cure doesn't mean, at
least from my point of view, 'uninteresting in general'. It's important to keep this apart. ;)

There's more than one way to dislike a song, that's for sure!

Most of their stuff between 1979 and 1989 is interesting in one way or another, whether a particular track works for me as a piece of music or not. Recordings by great artists in their pomp tend to be fascinating even if not every single cut is a masterpiece (e.g. Disintegration's title track). AND I tend to discover new songs I've never noticed are good, the latest being Happy The Man (wow!) and Screw (not bad).

Nor can I think of many songs from that period I find grating or annoying or in bad taste etc.

I'd say that from 1990 onward it's a different paradigm, and leave it at that.

The Cure is my fav band of all time. I recently made a list of my fav 300 songs ever and The Cure is on it 19 times, more than any other.

That being said, I can't pretend to love all of their songs. Some of them even grate on my nerves quite hard.

List of Cure songs I dislike the most (not including 'Curiosity', demos, Cult Hero, etc). I have a hard time listening to these ones:

TIB/BDC:
Subway Song, Foxy Lady, Meathook, So What, World War, Do The Hansa

17S:
Secrets, In Your House, Three

Faith/Charlotte:
The Funeral Party, Descent, Splintered In Her Head

Pornography, Lament (Flexipop)

cuneytarkin

"The 13th". And "Strange Attraction."

Quadpus72

Least favorites:

A good bit of 3IB (like Another Day though)

A good bit of The Top (it's growing on me though)

The Baby Screams

Torture, All I Want, Shiver and Shake, The Snakepit*

Wendy Time

Club America, Strange Attraction, Round & Round & Round*, Gone, Trap

Watching Me Fall*

Anniversary

Sleep When I'm Dead*, Freakshow, The Hungry Ghost, T,HAN,WY, The Reasons Why

(*indicates ones I really hate)

Songs I can't believe other fans dislike:

Screw/Sugar Girl/A Chain of Flowers/Breathe/Push?!?

Spock93

The 13th, Mint Car, Lullaby... etc.

so... all songs from Greatest Hits (except A Forest 'n' Lovesong) are worst ones, I guess.

Song I can't believe other fans dislike:

Homesick!
