QuoteCURÆTION-25
Part of Robert Smith's Meltdown
Curator Robert Smith closes the 25th Meltdown festival with an exclusive two-hour show at Royal Festival Hall.

He is joined onstage by four of his curious friends – and other, imaginary accompanists – to perform special interpretations based on a very particular selection of songs he has sung throughout the years.

QuoteRobert Smith curates the UK's longest-running artist-curated music festival in its 25th year. Tickets for the next wave of shows go on sale to Southbank Centre Members on Friday 13 April and on sale to the general public on Monday 16 April.

Smith is the lead singer and principal songwriter of The Cure, and its only constant member since the group formed in 1978.

One of popular music's defining bands, The Cure took the 'alternative rock' genre mainstream around the world and garnered numerous awards including a Brit Award for Best British Band, an MTV Icon Award, a Q Inspiration Award and NME's Godlike Genius Award. Smith has also been presented with an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement.

Ticket's on sale this Friday!

Apparently tickets go on sale for South Bank Center members (membership costs 60 GBP) this Friday. I will definitely try to get tickets for this gig. This seems way more interesting than the 40th Anniversary show!

Don't get your hopes up too high!
It's pretty logical that it might be musicians who'll be there for "Meltdown" anyway... (thus, Trent is an option, of course)!
Good thing about the internet is: we'll be able to read the reports during or shortly after the show! (Back in the 90's I had to wait for weeks/months to read about things in music papers, if at all...)

Maybe I'm reading too much into this but if Robert was just  going to perform with other artists (a la Bowie's 50th birthday concert) why would he specifically say "curious" friends?

"Four curious friends?" Matthieu Hartley, Perry Bamonte, Boris Williams & Pearl Thompson?

"and other imaginary accompanists?" The first thing that came to mind was Lol and Michael Dempsey - at least for one song to celebrate the original line up.

Maybe a Cult Hero reunion?

Lol is very likely.

Not sure about Perry, although I'd love to see him up there and he sure as heck deserves it.  I wouldn't even give odds on Lol, I think he'll be there, no question about it.  A little less certain about Pearl, but I think he's very likely to be there too.  Andy Anderson as well.  Lol and Andy have been real non-committal about it when asked, but that's only natural.  I can't think of anyone who would be 'out of the question, not gonna be there'.

I don't think so. He said in the interview that he "trapped" himself somehow, because Hyde Park was announced as "the only Cure show", so when "Meltdown" came along, it became clear that he'll have to do "something different" than a "normal" Cure show.
We'll have to wait and see. I myself do guess it will be "friends" of Robert from other bands, especially those who play at Meltdown. (E.g. someone from Mogwai...)

I feel he is saying that the expected 4 will join him on stage (ie Simon, Jason, Roger, Reeves) but it will be a very different show than a typical Cure show, with several guests joining them, unusual arrangements of songs, and some song of RS playing solo.  Because it will be so different this means Hyde Park can still validly be referred to as the only UK concert by The Cure this year.
...I'm sure it will be awesome whatever form it ends up being!

Quote from: Borl Poris on April 10, 2018, 23:41:22Siouxsie, Severen And Budgie

Banshees? That would be THREE curious friends.
It would be four if you added Martin McCarrick, who btw, was in The Glove before joining the Banshees.
But I don't know wether McCarrick and Severin get on well these days or not.

And as far as I'm aware, there is no way Sioux and Robert will ever play together again.
And Severin and Budgie, as far as I'm aware, won't be playing together again, either.
The split between Glove and Creatures was very real for quite a long time.
Is it still so? Not sure, as Sioux and Severin seem to have signed peace, but only after Severin's illness.

And Sioux's voice confronted with Robert's... that hurts, Sioux's great, but she lost a lot of vocal range.
While Robert keeps most of his vocal range (which is not just a little, just listen to New Day!!).
I don't think Sioux would like that.

Robert and Severin, on the other hand... I'd like to listen to Punish Me With Kisses live ONCE.
And Spellbound once again, I'd love that. But... sung by whom? Robert definitely can't play AND sing that, it is too difficult. Even McGeoch struggled with it on a bad day.
Besides, Severin playing bass guitar live? After his surgery? Not sure that's a possibility. I wish he could though, he's great.
If he couldn't, Severin could shift to keys, Robert to bass, and... Pearl on guitar? Pearl was in the Blue Sunshine sessions anyway, and it can't be McGeoch because he's no longer among us. Oh, why not asking Andy Anderson? Andy is the Glove drummer.

If it weren't clear enough, I miss The Glove and The Banshees very much.

This is the one, that's for sure.  Hyde Park the only European show this year?  The only OUTDOOR European show this year maybe...  Imagine how...distressed...some of these folks who are travelling long distances.  The show they THOUGHT they were going to see had already been played...two weeks before they even made it to England.  Gigs and tours rarely go smoothly for these guys, as evidenced by the 2016 tour and even these two shows (originally announced as ONE show).  Two weeks away, the rehearsals are probably over, maybe a warm-up a day or two before the gig, then 'they're off!'.  Lol will be there, that's not hard to figure out.  I'd put some money on Pearl being there too.  I have a strange feeling Perry will be there too, he's really fallen off the radar over the last couple of months.  I'm a little less certain about Andy, but I think there's a possibility.  Who else, Boris?  Even odds on him.  Michael and Mathieu?  Not a clue.  Can't wait to find out!

Have you got a ticket, Cheyler? If Pearl's gonna be there, that's enough for me: I don't want to miss it. I tried to purchase a ticket when the sales began but was impossible. At that time the gig was far away ahead, so I didn't care much. Now I'm scared of missing it. I agree Lol will be there. It would be nice to see Andy. And Michael. And Boris. But Pearl's the jewel for me. Pffff... I'm stressed out as 30 years ago...

I agree with you completely.  I don't have a ticket though.  I was trying to put together a trip to the Hyde Park gig, but while I was struggling with the travel money, the tickets sold out.  By the time I'd heard of the second, earlier gig the tickets were gone already for that show as well.  Pearl is the big draw for me, best guitarist they EVER had (or are ever likely to have).  Lol and Pearl are friends so it's not much of a stretch to see them both there.  Lol won't say, and rightly so.  I wouldn't want to under-cut the official announcement.  Same with Andy.  Even if I could get an expedited passport, all the other logistics are left undone.  I have to resign myself to the fact that I'm not gonna make it.  Something just occurred to me.  If this multiple-incarnation format works well, maybe if everyone's schedules are clear they could take it on the road!?!?  It'd be a helluva way to go out in style.

I know that there's a rule of not saying a word until the gig takes place. So Pearl, Lol, Andy or any other who may be joining the band won't say a word about it. There's no much re-sale tickets around, just a few on viagogo (which is the most abusive site of all abusers that re-sells). This show should be truly special, and not a rehearsal for Hyde Park. Robert can do what he wants. He could even make the three or four most relevant line-ups play that night. If it's just a gig of the current line-up (which I do not like at all) with a brief appearance of some old bandmates, that'd be truly disappointing. I don't think Pearl wants to go on the road with The Cure again.

I agree with most of what you said, the only point of disagreement being the latest line-up.  When Reeves first joined in 2012, and continuing through 2013 and 2014, I thought his guitar tone / sound was totally out-of-place within The Cure.  However the decision was reached, either by fans' posts or e-mails, or maybe the band realized that Reeves just sounded a little out-of-place, however it happened, the rehearsals for the 2016 world tour finally got Reeves fully integrated into The Cure.  It was just one big happy surprise to me, and now I truly believe they're on the right road, going in the right direction.  A little less than two weeks now, can't wait to find out who's gonna be there and in what combinations and which songs they play.  I've never looked forward to a show more, especially a show I can't make, than I am looking forward to this one!

I haven't seen the band lately so I cannot say. Gabrels wasn't fitting in the band at the beginning. Dunno later. Pearl is unique in al senses. I wish they could play with five diff. line-ups at the festival hall: Demps/Lol/Rob, Simon/Lol/Rob, Andy/Phil/Pearl/Lol/Rob, Boris/Pearl/Lol/Simon/Rob and Jason/Pearl/Simon/Rob. But that's only in my dream.

The same feeling grows inside of me because it's almost clear that none of the ex-members
will appear at BST 2018 (and I said the latter is going to be the major event!?!). I really wonder
if anyone from Curefans has got a ticket for MeltDown. No reply to date...

Well I have no idea what's planned and who'll be there or not...
My guess is that CURÆTION-25 will be a special "one-off" with some "friends" (not necessarily ever members of The Cure), while Hyde Park will be more like a "normal" Cure show (each "only" 2 hours though).

For all those who are lucky enough to be able to go (to either show) I hope they will just enjoy the moment, no matter who is there or not.  :cool
For all others: we can look forward to lots of moaning on the net, as soon as the show is over.  :D

but it's not clear if and how many ex-members accepted theirs. It's still nebulous.

I'd love to see those line-ups too, I'll bet we do get to see at least two of your suggestions!  I hope Perry is there too, he spent 20 years of his life in The Cure, on the crew, as a tech and as a full member of the band.

Robert was saying that RFH will be doom and gloom. Not a word about line-up/s. But that line on the third paragraph of the Guardian interview talked about "ex-band members" performing. And I guess (and hope) the writer had first hand and good info to say that.

The pre-gig hype is usually wrong, doesn't hurt to hope for the best.  I can't say I'd have been disappointed; any Cure gig these days is usually great.  Idle gossip can get blown TOTALLY out of proportion, to the point that some fans start having expectations long before the show gets into town...or out-of-town as the case may be.  They could have done any or all of these songs (and did...) on the 2016 tour.  Was this viewed as just a warm-up gig for Hyde Park?  The 'doom-and-gloom' RS predicted was pretty far off the mark too.  At least the lucky people who got tickets for Hyde Park won't feel cheated.  After all, when the Park gig was announced it said "Only European Date of 2018"...which also turned out not to be true.  Actually, I CAN say there is a fair bit of disappointment after all...

So it was basically a "warm-up" for Hyde Park and the only reason not to call it "The Cure" was that Hyde Park promoters wanted an "exclusive show".   :expressionless:
I do understand the disappointment about that, after all the "official" announcements were like:

shows that Meltdown was indeed a minor event compared with BST 2018 - knock on wood.

I assumed The Cure I was interested in was dead a long ago. The quartet of 4:13 Dream was something good, an "audacious" move, I was happy with that. But time told it was just a lapsus. Gig last night was a Cure covering The Cure gig. Current line-up is the nastiest ever. Reeves Gabrels doesn't fit in, definitely. Roger sounds are unbearable (please Lol, get back with your two-finger wonder, the Cure magic and spirit is in you no matter what). A trio with Simon and Jason would be the best solution if Robert doesn't want to call ex bandmates.

Besides that, it's kinda a lack of respect the "mystery" announcement. Ok, yes: 4 curious friends could be the other for members of the current line up. The "plus some imaginary accompanists" was crap. Just a line to make expectations high. Yes, there's still some people in the audience that dream with a good amount of fantasy and imagination. Those things The Cure has lost.

Anyway, I just do not blame or point out the band. I just feel they became a sad number. There's not a bit of soul in it. Just a mise en scène (not a very inspired nor inspiring one). Finally, it was the last one for me.

Now that I think about it, it all makes perfect sense.  They wanted 'exclusivity' so it was described as a special show, with special songs and 'imaginary accompanists'.  There were all SORTS of 'imaginary' accompanists on stage with them...I saw them, didn't you?  Or HEARD them anyway...  Sounds like a great way to give the event people what they wanted AND to mess with them at the same time.  Everything that was 'promised' was delivered, and in a way that left very little room for disappointment.

I thought maybe we'd see a 'guest' on one song, another 'guest' on another song, that kind of thing, but that would have meant lots of interruptions and a waste of valuable stage time.  It wasn't touted as some great 'reunion' gig, but I never expected that in the first place.  Never even bothered to HOPE for it.  Now it seems likely that the Hyde Park gig will be along the same lines as the Meltdown gig, but with all the 'hands-in-the-air' stuff thrown in.  I have no expectations whatsoever for the Hyde Park gig, but if something out-of-the-ordinary does occur, it'll be a nice surprise.

No, I really cannot say exactly what was so bad about those songs (and others). It's just a feeling. A perception. There's nothing stronger than that. Words are useless when the perception system works fine. But I can say that Roger keys are unbearable. He plays more than what's needed, his horrible sound is too loud and at the front of the mix. And Reeves does not fit in The Cure. Which does not mean he's a bad guitar player. He's a very good one. But The Cure's not Tin Machine. Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp (maybe my most fave guitar players along with Pearl) would not fit in The Cure. A trio Robert, Simon and Jason would be a much better line-up than this tired and tiring quintet. We don't need a fat and loud sound any longer. I'd love to hear a sensitive band, truly emotional. Not what they become. And when I say I do not blame the band, I mean that I know this is MY perception of things. Having seen the band playing live for more than three decades, I know when a live version it's not a very happy one. And there's no point in justify a feeling. FTEOTDGS was atrocious. And that song, under my point of view, was conceived to be played live. With Pearl, naturally. Pearl is truly missed. And she will always be. You cannot replace her as you cannot replace Simon. You need to change the formula.
