Show # 6: Roma

Live to the point of tears (Camus)

It was my sixth Cure show in a two-week period, a show I initially didn't plan to go. I didn't have tickets and the concert at the formerly Palassport (you probably remember now the Hot Hot Hot bootleg) was sold out several months ago. But to my luck, some weeks ago I had the chance to get a ticket for the Bologna gig on 29/10 and given that Roma was the next day, I couldn't miss the chance. It's never enough.

Another Journey By Train

All was very quick. At 9:53 in the morning @erpomata @disintegration and @lady (Marco, David and Dalila are their real names), Jessica (disintegration's sister) and me took a fast train from Bologna with destiny Roma Termini. At nearly 250 km/h we made it in roughly two hours. It was a very relaxed and fine trip where we were discussing about our favorite band and of course the Bologna show from the previous night: the highlights, Robert's voice, the 17 seconds encore, the audience's response, why Robert insists on certain songs... I discovered also that @erpomata hates Push (my favorite Cure song). Upon arrival, @lady and us parted ways. We spent the afternoon at @erpomata's watching football, listening the "Bloodflowers" (in vinyl) and playing bass with a replica of Simon's famous Gibson Thunderbird IV Bass.

At Night

I went to the venue around 18:45 to try my luck and find a ticket. @erpomata told me that the guys shouting "Buy tickets" meant to actually sell (scalping is of course illegal and they must hide it somehow) and that all of them were from Napoli (just a remark by the way). I asked around and they were asking for nearly 150 € - 200 € for a ticket (more than twice its original value). I was originally looking for a standing ticket but due the rush didn't mind a good seating location. The arena, named now "Palalottomatica", is a circular coliseum that contains three rings ("anellos") surrounding the standing area. The first ring was the most expensive as it was closer to the stage.

The price you pay for happiness

I met an old man (on his mid-sixties, it reminded me the man of the Standing On A Beach cover) who offered me a ticket for Anello 2, Sector B27. He wanted 200 € then 150 € then € 120. I told him I was not paying more than 100 € (the original price was around € 80). We discussed several times if the ticket was authentic and he sword to me it was and that just to be sure he was going to accompany me to the entrance, but not too close because "the police is there". As we were approaching the gate, he asked me (in Italian – good thing is that we Spanish speakers can understand nearly 90% of Italian) about the money. After I handed it to him, near the entrance, he ran away. I was afraid for a few moments that I was scammed but the ticket turned to be authentic and I got in without any problems.

@erpomata told me later these guys were also in Bologna and that they basically live of this "business".

Come closer and see

The Anello 2, Sector B27 turned to be parallel to the lateral side of the stage. I needed a better view and so I went to the B30. There were a handful of free seats and I took one of them, near the corner in the I row. From there I had a very good view of the stage and of the whole arena. It was perfect to see/feel the atmosphere of the whole venue.

At around 20:35 the show started. As is common in the 2016 European tour so far, The Cure starts either with "Plainsong", "Open" or "Shake Dog Shake". It was the turn for the latter, played magnificently with such energy that surpass even the early 1984 versions. There were, from left to right: Reeves, Robert, Jason, Simon (jumping all over the stage with his wireless bass) and Roger. Images went through my mind when a 27 years old Robert Smith opened the amazing In Orange show with the same song.

In the main set, songs from fundamental albums of their discography (17 seconds, Pornography, The Top, The Head On The Door, KMKMKM, Disintegration, Wish) were played, with the highlights being the opener "Shake Dog Shake", "Pictures Of you" (Robert's voice has lost power in songs such as Prayers for Rain and Disintegration -this was most noticeable in Vienna-, but he was and is always amazing on this one), "Push" (my favourite one always), "Play For Today", "One Hundred Years" and the psychedelic "From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea".

"Kyoto Song", highlighted by many (mostly due its inclusion in these shows), was played too fast in my opinion. "Charlotte Sometimes" could also be slower, and more "darker", as in its original version. As expected, the Italian audience responded very well, and sung along, danced and went crazy with their favourite songs (see video below for the reaction during "Push")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDZH_7exEUI

The Cure played three encores, with the first being the most remarkable as included the unreleased "It will never be the same" (hopefully it will be released sometime soon), "Burn" and its hypnotic drumming and "A Forest" (all the seating audience stood up for this one). From the second encore the hightlight was "Want"

Some fans don't like certain rock elements that Reeves add to some songs. The fact is, however, that he is a remarkable guitarist whose contributions have improved songs such as "From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea", "Wrong Number" or "Want". In the other hand, guitars solo such as the one in "A Night Like This", might indeed sound too rock for a song that should have more a "New Wave" feel, but that's just my opinion, of course.

Comment aside, I noticed that during "Lullaby", "Friday I'm In Love" and "Just Like Heaven" most people in the audience watched the entire song through their cellphones: It was, literally, a sea of smartphones and tablets. The opposite was "Give Me It", the closing song of the main set, an awesome track that sadly few people payed attention to.

The last encore (the "pop" one) included seven songs and was probably targeted to the non-connoisseurs (it comes to my mind now the girl in front of me with her boyfriend who were 90% of the time sat looking at their phones and only stood up in this part of the show and before only with "Just Like Heaven" and "In Between Days").

The show ended with "Why Can' I Be You" a good pop song but not the type that would leave the audience "wanting for more", in my opinion  (if I had to choose a pop one to close a show that would be either "Boys Don't Ctry" -chosen during the 2012 European Summer Festivals- or "Friday I'm In Love").

In any case, it does not matter, and we Curefans must feel lucky that our band still play such long, powerful and memorable shows that include a very good variety of songs (with both known classics as well as obscure tracks) after all these years. After all, what other band does that?

Setlist

Shake Dog Shake, Fascination Street, A Night Like This, The Walk, Push, Inbetween Days, Play For Today, Step Into The Light, Pictures Of You, Lullaby, Kyoto Song, High, Charlotte Sometimes, Lovesong, Just Like Heaven, From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea, One Hundred Years, Give Me It
