My 500GB external harddrive crashed (for lack of a better term...) about twenty minutes ago. Almost my entire collection of music is gone. About half a dozen stories, which I've spent about a year and a half writing altogether, are gone. Things I've got left (that is, what was on my computer itself, not the harddrive):

1) The three nights at Wembley in '89
2) Disintegration
3) Wish
4) Bloodflowers
5) The second disc of the Pornography remaster (NOT THE FIRST! AAAAAHHH!!!!!)
6) Muse's "Absolution" album
7) The Snake The Cross The Crown's "Cotton Teeth" album
8 ) A-Ha's "Take On Me"

Oh my god. The world has ended. Oh my god.

All my relatively obscure Cure recordings: Gone. All my FLAC copies of albums (minus those mentioned above...): Gone. No Faith. No Pornography. No Seventeen Seconds. Holy f*cking shit....

An old 'friend' of mine borrowed the hard copies of most of my music (though, admittedly, not all; but ALL of my Cure stuff) months and months ago, and has since moved away to New Hampshire. With my stuff.

I think I might cry.
Another Curefan for The Dark Christmas album.

that sucks. but.....
there are places out there that will recover hard drives - for a fee..

look under "hard drive recovery" in your regional google and be prepared to pay handsomely for it.

doing it yourself is dangerous, granted, i'm not very good with HDDs etc but i wasn't able to restore anything from a failed hard drive a while ago..

Good luck.

WELL, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENS SO...

:?

I ALWAYS WRITE IT ON CD'S WHEN EVER I DOWNLOAD NEW STUFF!!!

:smth023

AND IT NEVER GOES WRONG!
AND I CAN LISTEN TO IT ON MY CD PLAYER (NOT ON COMPUTER, WHICH IS A TERRIBLE THING)..

sorry to hear that, that sucks big time. :(
anyway, i'd suggest what javier said, it might be possible to recover it - although it'll cost money (which sucks too of course). anyway, since it's not just about music but about your personal writings, i'd surely go for it myself... good luck!
(and if it doesn't work, i'm sure there are people out here/there who can help you with the music part).

terrible? nothing terrible in it if you plug it into good set of headphones or your stereo... (who'd want to use some crappy internal speakers of a computer?)

(anyway, this all reminds me that i'm way overdue with burning proper back-ups from a lot of stuff... must really do it at once! :!:)
Ay, in the very temple of Delight
Veil'd Melancholy has her sovran shrine

Sorry to hear that, dude...

Luckily I learned my lessons about data loss well before I got into this whole lossless download thing. And the lesson to be learned? BACK IT UP! Regularly. Nothing's 100% safe, but you get a chance... Have You heard about PC Inspector File Recovery? It's german, but it's free and it might help.

Oh, and give that "friend" of Yours a slap, also in my name. That's something you just don't do.

I'm sorry to hear that. Curefans.com can help you to get back some of that stuff, as we can upload some shows in the future, however you might take a look at similar stories as yours. It seems there's a way to get back the data.

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS WHERE YOU GET REMINDED ON SOME LESSONS OF COMMON SENSE...

:)

"DONT PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN THE SAME BASKET" COMES TO MIND...

PS

WELL YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE MUSIC FROM YOUR COMPUTER BUT IT SHOULDNT BE YOUR PRIMARY DEVICE.

I feel you here. I've lost my share of important stuff due to hard drive failures. Now I back things up almost obsessively. I would NEVER rely on one single hard drive to save anything that was valuable to me. It's way too risky. Unfortunately, no one seems to believe that until the worst happens (and it always does).

Everything important on my computer's internal hard drive is backed up on an external drive .

Additionally, I have an external drive which is simply a backup of another external drive. This is where I store all of my FLAC shows.

However, I still back up all of my downloads on data DVD just to be extra safe.

Professional data recovery services can be insanely expensive, but definitely worth it if you can afford it. I'd be wary of cheap/free downloadable programs that claim to recover files. I've tried so many of them, and they're all pretty much worthless. They might be able to dig up a photo that you deleted last week, but they're definitely not miracle workers.

This might be worth looking into. I think it was just released fairly recently:

http://services.seagate.com/diysoftware.aspx

"You can preview your disc and file content in a simple hexadecimal viewer which tells you if a successful recovery is possible. You'll know in advance exactly which files can be recovered before you make a purchase."

I've never used it personally, but I'd just assume it's better than all the no-name $20 shit programs out there...

I would suggest looking into that software that Caley suggested and if that's not SUPEREASY to use [i.e. idiot proof - not that i'm implying you're an idiot, but you knwow what I mean] or what you want, bite the bullet and seek out the professional hard disk recovery service people..

Unless you're Bill Gates and you really know what you're doing when it comes to HDDs I would suggest not fking around with it yourself as you may only make things worse....

Once you get it all back then you too can be "El Burno" as I was known at one stage... and "Mr.BackUp - The Extra Drive Hero"...

Good luck and keep us posted..

Dillinger

thats what you get for downloading music, you had it coming criminal

seriously though, i'd invest in getting it recovered. especially with those stories on there too

Steady on Javi  ;)
Seriously though, bad break there but as everyone is saying, it may be possible to recover somehow. Just a question of how much dosh you're prepared to shell out I guess.
Ahem.
Just off to the shop to pick up some round shiny things.....

It's true. If you had the money, you might be able to get 95% of your data back even if the drive was in really bad shape. But I wouldn't dare to guess the price of that.

I'd seriously look into the Seagate recovery software first, and then go from there.
