A forest for me because I remember that song when I was only 12 and I watched the video (for me the first of The Cure)  :smth020 but I like M, at night and Play for Today too. :smth023

A Forest. No question there.

But have a damned good listen to the song 17 Seconds.
It's a masterpiece.

i really don't know what to vote here. i tend to listen albums very much as a whole and not as a collection of songs. on some labums the songs are more easily separated though, yet on some others it's more difficult. this is one of the really tough cases.

if the question was about a live song, then i'd probably say 'a forest' - but now i think i have to pass voting altogether....

I really dig Secrets.  Play For Today has long been a favorite of mine as well, but Secrets is the preferred track on Seventeen Seconds.  All in all, it's really a pretty basic song, just that the vocal part has some cool layering effects.  Then there's whispering of "keep quiet" at the beginning which is a perfect touch to get the song started.

Hmmm.  Definitely a favorite is A Forest for me as well.  It just seems so timeless and hearing it just brings back really fond memories!!  I can picture living at home with the parents and being locked in my bedroom watching this crappy VHS tape that I had with all the Cure videos on them... (BTW, sorry for getting off-topic here, but have to say after seeing this again ~ Robert does look like Ben Affleck, especially when he played in Dare Devil )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY7wuV_C1oI  (sorry couldn't resist)

Also, I thought this little article was quite interesting on the making of A Forest.  I didn't realize there was so much going on in recording a track like this!!  My hubby tried explaining some of the terms to me, having to do with the amps, etc. but it's all Greek to me!

p.s. I do also love Play for Today (but only voted on A Forest  ;))

Thanks and sorry to make this post sooooo long!!!

I just played that & you are right. A very  cagey little number, but hits the spot.
Still find myself going back to a forest though.

I voted for Seventeen Seconds, but it's hard for me to say why, as it was hard to choose. (What about A Forest! a part of me screams. What about M!!) Aside from the music, I remember when I first heard it the concept really grabbed me -- seventeen seconds, a measure of life....

At night is the best for me..i really love the bass-line of the song..

A Forest is good too, but id rather choose the one with a bass-line that always make me goosebumps when i listen to it loudly.. :rocker

I vote for 'A forest'. A classic... a deep and amazing song. But I also enjoy a lot 'Play for today' or 'In your house' from this album.

A FOREST without a doubt!
A symbol of their music...

I couldn't vote for "A Forest" as it seems just too cliche.
Yes, it's definitely a Cure standard ... but is it one of the best songs on this album?
I don't know about that. It seems to sort of stick out from the rest, to be honest.

I voted for "In Your House".
It just really anchors the album. It helps to drive the overall mood of the LP (sound and words).
And the early version on "Curiosity" (the one with completely different lyrics) is one of my all time favourite songs.

good point. i always listen to this from start to finish, much like a do with 'faith' and 'pornography'. they are just masterpieces. it reminds me of when i first got into the cure, i was obsessed with the song 'm' but had to listen to everything else as a lead up to the song. the whole album is beautiful and what came after was even better.... FAITH!

with the older albums it is always difficult for me, as 17/Faith/Pornography (same with Disintegration as well) I really see as albums and not as songs, but if I have to chose a fave, I'd go for Secrets cause it is one of those totally underrated forgotten gems the band did - obviously A Forest would be other option to vote for...

Is it just me, or are there some really early gothic tunes on here? Even though they hadn't developed their unique "Goth Pop" persona that they showed in 1981 and 1982, I think the instrumental tracks like "The Final Sound" and "Three" sound way ahead of their time...

Genius work right here. This album is one to take with you on a desert island!  :smth020

"The Final Sound"...

... just kidding! "A Forest", of course.

Great album, perfectly paced, great songs, genius production. "17 Seconds" is The Cure at their best, although it can be argued that "Pornography" is more intense and a few others have better lyrics.

Maybe we should vote the second best song of Seventeen Seconds.  ;)

Then, I could have voted "At night"

A Forest. It really is the quintessential Cure song. Play for Today is great, too. Then the title track, In Your House, At Night.

01 M (amazing bass, it moves me)
02 Secrets (great bass again, cold piano, hurrying rhyhtm)
03 A Reflection ;) (really great opener, cool and formidable)

A Forest is a little bit overrated for me.

01 A Forest (The girl was never there...philosophical)  ;)
02 In Your House (again the bass line and keyboard part, balm for my nerves)
03 Secrets (the drumbeat, once again the bass "melody" and Robert's words)

Secrets

This song perfectly captures the muted, steady-state minimalism of the album.
It's also a beautiful song.
