On June 15 2007 a 28 year old man, Björn Jue, was strapped to a chair and tortured to death in the town of Pernis, The Netherlands. The suspected murderers, Jeffrey van S. and Walter A. (25) are said to have been inspired by a gruesome torture scene in "Hostel 2", which they reenacted after Jeu's ex-girlfriend, Marian D. (24) told them he had repeatedly molested his 5-year old son; however this accusation has not been confirmed so far. Two police officers arrived at the scene after calls that Jue was "held against his will". Jeu was screaming for his life. However, the officers did not enter the house and called for backup because this is standard procedure when a hostage situation is suspected. When backup arrived half an hour later (some witnesses claim it was more than an hour later), the screaming had stopped. Jeu died at the scene. Full details were not disclosed for being "too horrible and beyond imagination."

YEAH, IT'S THAT GOOD!!!

  8)

Steve, I still remember Runaway Boy (I think off debut), and it still kicks.  They have a great live show from what Ive been told and Brian looks the shit as well (not that Im gay or anything, not that theres anything wrong with that  :-D)

Janko, I havent seen second Hostel yet but the first was amazing.  Im not really into modern horror, but just saw The Ring 2 last night and that was pretty impressive as well  :)

i'm usually not into thyat sort of stuff but Shaun of The Dead was an exception, it was genuinely funny and pretty well-made and clever film in all. wasn't there this scene where they were trying to find something to throw at the approaching zombies and the only thing they had was a box of old vinyl record? that was so funny, when they still had time to read the labels and hastily decide whether or not have heart to throw that particular record or not.
(did they end up throwing new order's 'blue monday' (original pressing!) or not? i guess they did hahahaa :smth082 )

my tastes for movies might have changed a bit here and there over the years, but one genre i've lways loved ever since i was something like 6 years old: good western movies. the good ones are just... good!
i just grabbed this from the discount shelf of the local store some time ago, it's a 2-disc special edition.
and i hadn't seen it for a long long time - but damn this is a good movie!  :smth023
and what a classic score by ennio morricone too.  :smth020

Homicide: Life on the Street.

All of it. I never quite got into the show when it first aired (I found some of the camera work grating), but now I'm hooked. TV on DVD is a godsend.

The show was created by the guy who went on to create The Wire, which if you haven't seen, you need to. Best show on television.

I also just finished watching "Dead Like Me" for the second time. Awesome series, killed just as it had totally hit its stride.

Anyone else watch it?

I was happy to learn that there is a direct-to-DVD movie (I know, that's the stuff of Steven Seagal and the Olsen Twins) in the works, with almost the entire original cast (they re-cast Daisy, and Rube simply isn't in it  :smth011 and they are adding Henry Ian Cusick from "Lost").

And perhaps the series may even return (keeping my fingers crossed, as it's been a few years, and cast members obviously move on... But I guess the new head of MGM is a mega-fan, and people are PSYCHED about the movie...

HAROLD IS SUCH A GOTH KID! I mean, there was no such thing back then, but in a way he's a protogoth. Swear to god. He hangs out at funerals and drives a herse! Awesome flick, very sad, great soundtrack although I'm not a Cat Stevens fan I love that song "I think I see the light" and I listen to it alot now.

Very funny, he fakes suicide a bunch of times to freak out houseguests and get his mother's attention, then he meets an old lady and they fall in love. Very sweet story and lots of memorable scenes. I think it's been forgotten with time but everyone should see it!

Last night, New Years Eve, we stayed home, having a quiet night...way past going out and getting "legless" these days!! On the tv were 2 Beatles features!! One was about the music and what Cirque De Soleil are doing with it. It was fantasic to watch how they gelled the music and dance; they collaborated with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono, who were all thrilled with the end result; : opened in June 2007 overseas, something I would seriously consider seeing if it came to South Oz...Then, after that, they showed the film "Help"!! Talk about taking me back!! I was lucky that my older siblings were really into the Beatles, and I grew up with their music blasting through the house.. Really brought back so many memories, hearing and seeing these 2 shows..still enjoy the Beatles music, those lads were way before their time!!!

Yes, I have to agree, Melly!!  :smth045 (sorry to derail here) I also grew up listening to The Beatles and I always come back to them and find something new in their music!!  My Dad was/is a huge Beatles freak and always will be.  I love them but am not a fanatic about them, meaning I don't know every single song, fact, etc.  My Dad actually named my from the song "Michelle"... I know, cheesey right?  But I will always love them!!!!  Even did the Father/Daughter dance at my wedding to that song per request of my Daddio!  Sorry, just had to put my 2 cents in because I will always have fond memories of my childhood.   :smth050

Did anyone see "CLOVERFIELD"???

That has to be the best movie I've seen in a long time!!! Very suspenseful, keeps a good sense of realism and drags you in there almost like one of those interactive 3D attractions at the carnivals and whatnot. Very, very good filming and effects (although I must admit that the ending over-did it...no spoilers!!! lol)

SO MUCH, in fact, that my jaw was open mostly the whole film. By the time the credits were rolling and the lights went on, I noticed that I had drooled all over myself...it was THAT good!

I think the whole seizure thing is ridiculous...I had no problems at all, and I am a sufferer of frequent migraine headaches!

NINE INCH NAILS - new york, saugerties - woodstock '94

one of the classic NIN shows and imo one of the classic shows by anyone ever. great that they got it filmed...
everyone (including the band) was covered with mud from head to toe and it's a raging performance...
this is one of the gigs i sometimes put on in order to "just watch a couple of tracks" and then i always end up watching all through, every damn time. :P

Yes, a few months ago I found the Happiness in Slavery video of this show and was totally blown away with their performance!  I like how Reznor beats up his keyboard as he plays, then completely starts to annihilate anything around him.  Loved it!!

Michael Mann's "MANHUNTER"...now I'm obsessed with Shriekback's "This Big Hush"!!! 8)

It was way better than Silence Of The Lambs and had a really cool look to it. BTW it's on demand on Comcast...or at least it was.

Oh, CLASSIC! Great usage of the song as well, it gave the song a really gothic feel, even though by itself you wouldn't think twice about categorizing it as "gothic"...but with the pseudo-religious imagery and sadistic nature of Dollarhyde, it really shed new light on the song. 8)

I had already known the song beforehand (as it was the song my mother's teacher used to torture her with during class...she hated it for some reason)...long story short, great movie, great soundtrack!  :smth023

'play out' always was my favorite of all the official cure videos. even though it's rather incoherent at times (some people even say "boring") there's just something in the atmosphere there, it somehow catches a magical period... hard to explain it i guess.

anyway you just reminded me i haven't watched it all through for god knows how long...
so thanks for the tip. ;)

I think I know what you mean about the "atmosphere" in 'play out'...I'm afraid it's nothing I can verbalise...but there's just "something".  For me, seeing them perform working versions of songs that ended up on Wish (Cut, A Letter to Elise) is just fascinating...

Anyhow, for me today it's Show (another one I haven't seen in years)....THAT version of A Forest....OMG!! Brilliant!

My brother's been bugging me about seeing this movie, so I was a tad skeptical about it at first...good one, even if it wasn't "much of a movie". Yeah, yeah... ;) Gotta love Milton, and that scene when they "take care of" the printer out on a field. :-D

Oh and I luuuve Harold and Maude, saw it for the first time just a month ago or so. May I venture that there's no other movie quite like it!? "Harold! That was your last date!" :smth082

Heathers is another keeper, by the way. I actually came to think of a line from the movie just a couple of days ago that cracks me up every time: "I LOVE MY DEAD GAY SON!"

Haven't seen Hot Fuzz yet, but perhaps I should...sounds like such a "boys will be boys" superhero movie, "he's sooo cool and amazing they had to get rid of him"...Loved Simon and his buddy (can't remember the name) in Shaun of the Dead (have you seen Simon in Black Books? Unforgettable!). And oh, Martin Freeman from the original The Office (oh yeah!) has a small role in the film. Don't think he's that much of an actor, but he can be quite...attractive, at times...

watched Stephen Kings' "The Mist" last night... saw it years ago, but still made my eyes pop out and my skin prickle!!     The ending...oh my.....  love his films, even though I've read the books....
You know, I don't know if it's cos I'm getting old and cranky, but there aren't many films which really "grab" me... have seen quite a few lately, but I usually feel disappointed when the dvd finishes. I am open to any "topic", don't have one particular genre that I stick to. Just want to be entertained for a couple of hours ( by a film, by a film!!) doesn't have to be deep and meaningful, just a good story that captures my imagination. *sigh* maybe it's me...!!   :smth087

@ Melly: I've only heard of The Mist from 2007, is there an older version? Can't find it...

I don't watch horror movies that often. Hardly ever, actually. The last one I saw was The Orphanage by Juan Antonio Bayona (Guillermo del Toro from Pan's Labyrinth one of the producers), and I really, REALLY enjoyed it. I bet a lot of horror movie buffs snort at it, there are some clichés used, but they felt fresh to me. I loved the movie more for the atmosphere than the jump factor though. Being someone who has a bit of a prejudice against horror movies, thinking the creators always resort to grossing you out when they can't muster the suspense, it was a real treat to get to watch a genuinely suspense-driven horror movie like this one. Oh, and when you realize what's happened at the end, it's heartbreaking. Warmly recommended.

You know, the same thing has been happening to me... and I've actually decided that it is indeed because I'm getting old and cranky. I can't remember last time I really, really enjoyed a movie. Which maks me sad, because I've always loved cinema! It's just been ages since I've seen anything that felt new or surprised me.
Oh boy, isn't it a little early for me to start feeling like I've "seen it all"?

@Poe.. I am SURE I have seen The Mist before, would have been a long time ago, but I knew the film every step, even the actors were very familiar. There must be an old version of it somewhere?  I kept asking my fella, "Have you seen this before, I know it so well?"..No, he's never seen it. Hmmm, odd.
@Robiola..it is a relief to see that I'm not the only one who feels like this!!  Most of the new releases, with such fanfare and high expectations, leave me flat and thinking "that's IT??!!"....
No Country for Old Men was good though... well, I enjoyed it!!

one of my favorite films:

winged migration (http://www.sonyclassics.com/wingedmigration/index_flash.html)

i saw this on a big movie screen a few years ago and it's seriously one of the most intense movie experiences i've ever had. i don't know how they managed to film it all but it literally takes you up there in the sky, to fly among the birds - and all done without computer effects/CGI, it's all real footage.
there's very little spoken script in the film, as it relies on such breathtaking footage that there's no need to explain anything.
maybe the most beautiful movie ever made. i never was a kind of person who starts sobbing at the end of some romantic comedy, never ever... and people always say how they cry when they watch E.T. or Titanic or whatever it is they name. i never relate to that. but the first time i saw this i was in tears through most of it, simply because it was too beautiful and too powerful to see. and yeah, feel free to call me a wacko - i don't care, i love this film! - even on my little tv set. :)

My husband and I sooooo wanted to see this on the big screen, but it didn't stay around very long, and we missed it. We have it on VHS, but our VHS player went to the big VHS fields in the sky shortly after we bought the cassette. So I only got to see it once, and only on tv. But it was, as you say, extremely powerful, incredibly beautiful. I was so taken with it, it was like being under a spell. And as far as the "wacko" thing goes... just before Winged Migration came out, a friend of mine was at the movies; they were showing the trailer for this film, and she heard a woman saying "How stupid do you have to be to pay to watch birds fly around for two hours?" She told me that it really made her laugh, since at that very moment she was thinking that she'd like to go see it with me and my husband because she thought we might like it.
So, stupid wackos -- unite! And go to the movies. :-D

Well, I've been in the US for a while now, haven't posted anything since I left. The abstinence is starting to get to me...better post quickly:

My aunt showed me and my brother a couple of episodes of this show when we stayed over at her place. I've been looking for something like this show for years; it's clever, it's strange, it's imaginative, and it manages to (at times) scare the viewer with escalating suspense rather than yucky gore. Watch it if you haven't already. By the way, Schindler's List is one of my favorites. Good pick.

My name is Talking Tina, and you'd better be nice to me...

not watching a blockbuster movie (have seen The Dark Knight...wow!) but currently watching the Olympics...love to watch the people striving to not just win, but to finish. To partake, to enjoy and, if, on the day you are just that little bit better  than your competitor, to stand triumphant on the podium. To work so damned hard to get there, I salute all participants. I particularly love the equestrian events, such beautiful creatures, their riders tall and proud.
And watching it all on our new 106cm LCD full HD TV..it's freezing cold, pouring with rain, and I'm snuggled up on the couch... no doubt I will end up with square ( or rectangular!) eyes, but hey, it's only every 4 years!!

"happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me"!!

Oh yeah...Go Aussies!!!!!!!  :smth023

just remembered...seeing "The Young Ones" mentioned above, which I loved, I seem to recall The Cure playing on one episode..many, many years ago, but I'm pretty sure..

Arrrrghhh! One of the few films I haven´t seen with Mr Depp. Must make it happen soon!

highly recommended.  :smth023

"Originally from Cleveland, William Blake gets a job as an accountant in a place called "Machine Town". Already in the train that takes him to the Dickinson wood factory an "unknown guy" warn him against the place he is going to. It is not fortune that awaits him but Death. Indeed the first night in "Machine Town", Blake is shot at and wounded. From this point on start a long journey of wandering in company of Nobody, an Indian and a philosopher.

This black and white film is mesmerizing. Obviously the black and white marks a rupture between what you are used to...So in essence this rupture is between let say classic Western and Jim Jarmush western as he re-visit the genre. It is also a way to keep the audience to what is essential...Color is a filter that can distract you, the sobriety of black and white will not.

But what exactly is essential in that movie? Beside the fact that Mr. Jarmush depict a brutal and impulsive America, the movie opposes a new born civilization that is already collapsing and a dying one that is still shining...But more than that the journey of William Blake is a metaphoric and circular voyage from misunderstanding to certitude. The guide Nobody, himself trapped between the two civilizations can not provide a cure to the passing man but may very well provide a path to a curing one. This journey from Machine Town, the "anti chamber" of hell to the sea, first step to Heaven is tremendously poetic and emotional. Also emotional is the evolution from misunderstanding to comprehension between Nobody and William Blake who eventually settles on what is essential reaching a common ground, clarity...

Help by a haunting and beautiful score from Neil Young and an extraordinary cast the film succeed in transforming the wood wagon of hell in which William Blake embarks to the wooden vessel to heaven in which he will lie.

One of the best films from Mr. Jarmush, Dead Man manages to take the audience in one of cinema most poetic journey..."

(user comment/review by 'auberus' from http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112817/)

"Look out the window. And doesn't this remind you of when you were in the boat, and then later than night, you were lying, looking up at the ceiling, and the water in your head was not dissimilar from the landscape, and you think to yourself, "Why is it that the landscape is moving, but the boat is still?"

(btw the entire casting of this movie is great: lots of memorable odd-ish supporting roles and cameos, for instance iggy pop makes a pretty odd appearance.)

talking about mr depp, have you seen this one (it was depp's debut as a director too, i think)?:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118768/

"A down-on-his-luck American Indian recently released from jail is offered the chance to "star" as the victim of a snuff film, the resulting pay of which could greatly help his poverty stricken family.
...Convinced that he has nothing to offer this world, he agrees to be tortured to death by a gang of rednecks in return for $50,000."
(from imdb).

i have to say i'll recommend it because it is a very good film, but i'll do so with a warning as it's also one of the most shocking films i've seen, truly. it was really a slap in the face for those people who used to think depp was just a pretty face.

there are no shocking images or anything but the fact that you know what's going to happen in the end... it's a pretty heavy film.
i found it pretty hard to sleep after watching this film.

btw marlon brando makes a truly scary appearance, really creepy.

As a matter of fact no (said with a slight touch of embarresment).

Just watching Narc (Joe Carnahan) on Swedish television. Ugly and sleazy but dark and fierce. Jason Patric is awesome in this flick (even Ray Liotta makes a difference). A little touch of Quentin Tarantino or a police film from the 70´s.

Thanx for Your tips guys!

i don't usually watch that kind of stuff (particularly if it's being broadcast overseas or something), but i actually did watch this too. it's good to notice how big change in mental climate this change is already bringing. especially in a time when most news that you watch on a daily basis are more or less depressing/straining/full of all sorts of other downers.

http://waltzwithbashir.com/

a very good film about  supressed memories of the lebanon war and the genocide in the refuge camps:

One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari Folman about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there's a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can't remember a thing anymore about that period of his life.
Intrigued by this riddle, he decides to meet and interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth about that time and about himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to creep up in surreal images ...

the film also has an interestingly original style, something of an "animated documentary". works very well imo. and it makes the occasional real documentary/news footage really powerful and shocking.
recommended watching.

hey too bad. anyway it's a really good film about a really eye-opening subject. i totally agree with this review:

I have never seen a film quite like this in my life and I have never left the cinema feeling the way I did. About ten inutes in you forget you are watching an animation and a subtitled film you soon realise you are watching a masterpiece. Best film I have seen all year.

Dang it! (http://www.cureconnections.com/images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif) I'll watch it some day...

I've heard about Persepolis, yet again there's a film adaptation out before I've even read the back of the book... The film's got an 8.0 at imdb, so it must have pleased some readers. Perhaps it's one of those film adaptations that doesn't ruin the book for you if you haven't read it first...

this used to be one of my favorite movies years ago, i hadn't seen it for years. i just got the dvd and i'm all thrilled again.

a really original film, based on the wonderful play by tom stoppard (this film version directed by him, too).
the story of shakespeare's hamlet seen through the eyes of the two characters who in shakespeare's play are just a footnote at the end of the play.
while trying to figure out why exactly they've been summoned to the court, they more or less accidentally invent everything from hamburgers to gravity - all of which goes hilariously unnoticed.
gary oldman and tim roth are simply marvelous pair in this!

Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus. A brilliant and enlightning film about the people that still are the links between what once was and what now is in American folk music. It´s sometimes a very sad film and sometimes the purity of the partisipants sagas is hard to comprehend, especially the parts from Louisianna and all the churches filled with those different reverends shouting out loud. But it´s yet a film well worth feeling through.

I just saw a brilliant Swedish film called "Fyra veckor i juni" which is Swedish for "Four Weeks in June". It was about an elderly woman (Ghita Nörby) and a younger woman (Tuva Novotny) and some Polish guestworkers existing in and around an old house under reconstruction. So many stories were told and so many secrets were revieled and the whole atmosphere of the film was close to magic. I relly can´t understand why so much crap is produced in Sweden when the ability to make such a great film really is there. Brilliant acting between the two women and a highly suggestive photo and a very nice music score even if The Soundtrack of Our Lives isn´t one of my favorite bands. But that´s the music the younger woman likes to play when she´s alone in her appartment.

I must confess that I didn´t think it was a film for me but gee was I wrong. Luckily it was on one of the non commercial channels so there were no intermissions for commercial breaks. Unfortunately my coffee went cold cause I simply wouldn´t or couldn´t walk away from the story. Bad thing I saw it alone. This was a film I could have sit up all night and discuss.

Brilliant! Directed by one for me unknown man by the name of Henry Meyer. I strongly recommend it. Check the link below and click on "trailer"

Incident At Oglala (1992)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104504/

a documentary about one of the most well-known political prisoners, leonard peltier, who's been serving two life sentences for in US prisons since 1976. he was sentenced for murdering two FBI agents but he's very likely to be an innocent man - somebody just "had to pay", like one of the jury members of his trial later said in an interview. and even regardless of whether or not he was guilty, he has been arguably illegally imprisoned.

a very well done documentary, directed by michael apted and produced and narrated by robert redford, it consists of interviews of people both sides. the filmmakers keep their distance all the time and let the people talk. a pretty grim story.

peltier is a self-taught artist and a writer, and has been twice nominated for nobel peace prize. president clinton refused to pardon him, perhaps obama?

Just finished watching Sweden beating Belarus in icehockey in the winter olympics and tomorrow morning (06.00) I´m up sheering for the Germans to beat the Fins in the very same group.

Ad: Well that didn´t happen. The Fins outscored the Germans with five goals to nothing, but hey, that´s just giving us a direct final battle between Sweden and Finland on sunday. And here in Sweden we just love to hate the Finish hockeyteams and I presume that it´s the other way around in Finland. So, God´s Speed to all of them who are to be involved!

The Swedish team taking on the Finish team in the icehockey tournament of the olympics. The Swedes are said to take a dive just to avoid the Russians or the Canadians in the quarter finals. Gee, I really hope they will not take a dive against the bad guys in the blue and white jerseys! The good guys in yellow jerseys just have to beat the Finish team and they are currently in the lead by one goal to nothing (score by Loui Eriksson).

If any of you guys out there are from Finland please don´t be offended. I have nothing against Finland and the Fins, this is just an icehockey issue.

Ad: 06.58 (Swedish time) 2 - 0 by Nicklas Bäckström!

Ad 2: 07.18 Sweden just managed six minutes in boxplay. Two of those minutes were five on three for the bad guys. Great game!

Ad 3: 07.21 3 - 0 by Loui Eriksson! This is so sweet!

Ad 4: 07.25 Pitkänen (bad team) got match penalty for a really stupid hit (cross checking right in the face on Patrik Hörnqvist, one of the good guys). Major penalty, five minutes.

End of second period

Ad 5: 08.12, end of the game. A rather dull third period where both teams seemed to be satisfied with the score. Both teams are through to the quarter finals.

What does the mysterious disappearance of record-breaking aviator Steve Fossett have in common with Area 51? In September 2007, Fosset went missing somewhere over the Sierra Nevada mountain range, sparking the biggest peacetime search and rescue operation in the history of the United States. Over the ensuing days and weeks, reports would surface of dozens of other missing airplanes in a huge triangular area of California and Nevada. Could this mysterious region be another Bermuda Triangle?

Yes they are! Con Gratulations. On their jerseys the Americans have a small patch near their left shoulder. Is that an insignia from the 1980`s jersey of "The Miracle on Ice-team"?

It was an interesting episode with that Nevada Triangle. Never heard of it before. A rather laid back and somewhat cool comment was when one of the persons said "You can fly the wrong way, which is down in the ground" as a reply to the question in what way those winds play any part of this mystery.

Quote from: crowbi_wan on February 28, 2010, 17:35:01As for the games, that 6-1 thrashing Team USA gave the Finns in the semis was pretty sweet.  Our ladies took home the silver.  Now let's see if the boys can squeak by the home team again for gold.

yeah that was like "wtf?". that was a disaster, don't know what happened there. but hey it's just sport. :) i was actually just laughing when i watched it hehe, it was so funny, in a way. how everything can sometimes go totally wrong, just unbelievably so. haha
and hey, maybe the canucks will still kick your ass. :P
anyway, the most important thing is always to qualify higher than the sweedes do hehe - so, mission accomplished hehe ;)

anyway, if you compare the populations, i think it was quite great work for our team to finish up third:
USA over 300 million, finland a bit over 5 million. so population wise, it's like as if you'd have wisconsin alone representing the whole of your country (both finland and wisconsin have population around 5.3 million).
i wonder if wisconsin alone would have taken you to the final(?)

Perhaps, though it would be impossible to know that.  I mean if some players from that particular state had trained together for their entire lives.  Who knows?  But yeah, I get what you're saying.  Earlier I had mentioned to you the same thing with the Finns Snowboarding team, "The Finnish Mafia".   Three Finns qualified for the halfpipe, with one taking home a medal.  Again, a smaller talent pool there, yet several made it to the big show.  However, your guys can't hang with Shaun White and his "Whitesnake"  :P

How To Save Water By Taking a Shorter Shower

Who comes up with this "advice"???

I never understood how "low flow" shower heads save water, considering the lousy stream you get from them. It just makes it take FOREVER to get a decent rinse from them. Unfortunately, they're pretty much mandatory here in the U.S. now and you have to be rather clever to find a workaround.

And what's with the bucket for house plants?  My water gets hot in a split second (certainly quick enough to scald me if I'm not careful).

As for two people showering at the same time... Ok, maybe it's "fun" for certain occasions, but how on earth could that be any more efficient when you're using some crappy lo-flo shower head that can barely keep up with one person?

Anyway, if you REALLY want to save water, just don't bathe at all. Quite a few people in history have gone this route, with King Louis XIV of France possibly being the most famous:

http://ty.rannosaur.us/15-famously-filthy-people-from-the-pages-of-history (http://ty.rannosaur.us/15-famously-filthy-people-from-the-pages-of-history)

During the 72 year reign of Louis, France established an absolute monarchy, Versailles was built, and The Sun King waged war with everyone. Possibly hydrophobic, he refused to bathe unless his doctors forced him to and took two, possibly three, baths his entire life. He preferred to be dusted with scented powder and washed his face with a rag soaked in alcohol. Louis refused surgery on a gangrenous foot, leading to his death, and would lose chunks of it around Versailles.

Problem solved!  :-D

well, some of those advice might be ok depending on where you live/what kind of shower you have etc.
but some of them - i mean, "shower with a friend"? lol. what kid of video is that supposed to be actually?

of course the truth is that we should all learn to save water, just like all other natural resources too.
but i think the much bigger issues are caused by the way how big industries keep wasting and polluting water resources, often without any penalties at all. :? for instance textile industries consume horrible amounts of water:

http://wateruseitwisely.com/blog/miscellaneous/it-takes-1800-gallons-of-water-to-make-one-pair-of-jeans (http://wateruseitwisely.com/blog/miscellaneous/it-takes-1800-gallons-of-water-to-make-one-pair-of-jeans)

1,800 gallons (about 6800 liters) water for one pair of jeans   :? - well, that's a lot of showers.

Yeah. I guess that's how they thought of blue cheese and all those other smelly types? :smth100
By the way I just learnt that when the first portuguese arrived in Japan in the 17th century as the first Europeans ever, one of the things they found worth enough to tell about when they got back home was that the japanese usually bathed ever day - whereas the Europeans themselves went on for months and months without a bath.
No wonder that the japanese used to called the portuguese "southern barbarians".

i just finished watching twin peaks once again, both seasons, all episodes.
took a few days ;) or actually a few weeks as i only watched one or two episodes at a time.

it would have been great if they hadn't resolved the palmer case at the end of the first season and had stuck to the original characters and their transformations and not introduced so many new ones.
nevertheless, the plot is irrelevant, the moments are everything. i still like the atmosphere of the series, the strange kind of "it's all inside your head" feeling, the re-occuring symbolism and characters that are both real and unreal at the same time.

The Russel Paradox in a simple way
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barber_paradox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barber_paradox)

Suppose there is a town with just one male barber; and that every man in the town keeps himself clean-shaven: some by shaving themselves, some by attending the barber. It seems reasonable to imagine that the barber obeys the following rule:

He shaves all and only those men in town who do not shave themselves.

Under this scenario, we can ask the following question: Does the barber shave himself?

Asking this, however, we discover that the situation presented is in fact impossible:

If the barber does not shave himself, he must abide by the rule and shave himself.
If he does shave himself, according to the rule he will not shave himself.

i can't feel any sympathy for that bullfighter, because every bull that is forced to walk on the arena gets to die. if that is the deal for the bull, i think the bull has all the right to kill the bullfighter too.

I don't care how nervous somebody might be in a situation like that, that's just insane... WTF???  I could have given a better answer when I was 3 years old!

She might as well have just said something like this:

Because as for me the American American so is not done privately, people there of some person our nations don't so thing is believed. There is a map in it, our education seems the way. Republic of South Africa and the Iraq and it seems to be the way the thing way somewhere, it believes, should and being I, help American in our education this of the United States, the Iraq and Asia which should help the Republic of South Africa country should be helped, it believes, you like, therefore as for us our children. Making our futures of for the sake of, as for me.

That almost makes more sense!

a documentary called 'synth britannia'.
you can watch it here:

http://documentarystorm.com/music/synth-britannia/ (http://documentarystorm.com/music/synth-britannia/)

Documentary following a generation of post-punk musicians who took the synthesiser from the experimental fringes to the centre of the pop stage.

In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Volatire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard and dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain.

The crossover moment came in 1979 when Gary Numan's appearance on Top of the Pops with Tubeway Army's Are Friends Electric heralded the arrival of synthpop. Four lads from Basildon known as Depeche Mode would come to own the new sound whilst post-punk bands like Ultravox, Soft Cell, OMD and Yazoo took the synth out of the pages of the NME and onto the front page of Smash Hits.

By 1983, acts like Pet Shop Boys and New Order were showing that the future of electronic music would lie in dance music.

Contributors include Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant.

..won't post any U-tuby stuff...., but just finished watching  "Gattaca".. with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman.. I have it on DVD. One of my fav sci-fi pics.. Jude Law's first movie.. excellent movie , based on now current/future topics such as genetics, and how they WILL play a part in society/IVF/life insurance/personal capacity.. our lives will be dictated by the genetic dispositions that we all inhereit, whether or not we will ever succumb to these. Science fiction.. but sooo close to the next generation... employers being in control of our personal DNA, we, at their mercy , to depend on proving them wrong. Beautifully shot, Danny DeVito one of the producers.. I never get tired of this film. A stand out.
Echoes of George Orwell and Ira Levin... give it a go... enjoy!

the first three seasons from 84-86 ('the adventures' and 'the return of sherlock holmes') are simply superb. if i had to name the best tv series ever, that would be it.
and jeremy brett is THE sherlock holmes, he was simply stunning in this. i can't believe he never got any awards or official recognition for his performance.  :?

as much as i generally do like robert downey jr., the recent guy ritchie movie was pretty terrible interpretation. it simply not sherlock holmes, it was just some dude with the same name.

Politics is the theme of the week!
In August the Australian prime minister (Malcolm Turnbull, who was in the Liberal party) was ousted from within his own party. It was an ugly thing, and I personally though Turnbull was pretty good (as far as politicians can go). He was more progressive, supporting same-sex marriage and stuff like that. It really made clear the divide in the Liberal party with some (like Turnbull) more progressive, and others (like Abbott and Dutton) not. Those folk were the ones opposing same-sex marriage, and fighting for harsher immigration detention etc. Anyway it ended with Scott Morrison becoming PM (he was close with Turnbull, and is also on the more progressive side so thank goodness for that!)  Anyway, fast-forward 3 months and here in Victoria the state election just happened (which I've been watching on TV). It's the first state or federal election since these events took place, and the Liberals got massacred!  I think the events of 3 months ago played a big role, and am personally pretty glad by the outcome :)
Those few weeks in August when it looked possible that Peter Dutton may become PM were horrifying, and seeing how many in that party backed him 🤢  I think it likely put me off ever voting Liberal again

QuoteThe movie is about the the discovery and spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) with a special emphasis on government indifference and political infighting—specifically in the United States—to what was then perceived as a specifically gay disease

If you did not, you should watch it (an amazing cast, too)

Hesitant with starting something "new", I did try and watch the first episode of "Mr Robot" and thought it was pretty good! The world of "hackers" and such is far from me, but still I found it entertaining to watch.  :cool

JRM speaks crystal clear. The decisive sentence comes in the middle when he says
that a majority voted to 'leave' and not for a 'specific deal'. Moaning and complaining
of German politicians do not change a thing. They decided to leave, so let them go.
My intention was to show that a No-deal is not the end of the world (pun intended).
And, by the way, I'm not responsible for your laziness.

Finally I got round to watching "Bohemian Rhapsody" (in a cinema, although dvd/blu has been released now). I'm not the biggest Queen fan, but it was mostly entertaining to watch. (And I'm aware it is very much the "Hollywood version" of events, just like back in the day with that movie about The Doors...)
Rami Malek deserved his Oscar, as he acted well enough, however it never got further than me watching "Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury" (well I never had the impression I was watching the "real" Freddie - despite a good performance and make-up and all that).
The climax of the film is the "Live Aid" performance and I actually watched that back in 1985! From what I remembered, the film crew did very well in recreating that moment!  :cool

oh dear, not my favourite thing Bowie ever created.  My understanding is it was been done quickly, as part of Live Aid.  Its amazing that it had such commercial success, went high on the charts and won awards etc, when compared to his other work it pales in comparison (at least in my opinion).
May I make a bid to not watch that one, and instead watch this spectacularly splendid and deliriously delicious creation that he and the same director (David Mallet) made only a few years earlier...

That was amusing, @MeltingMan! :-)

Seeing as you seem to have French skills and a bit of French movie immersion, we were wondering if you knew the title of a quirky film we'd like to re-watch.  We saw it a few years ago on SBS, the Australian ethnic/international broadcaster - movies from all over the world in original languages, with subtitles.  It had this old guy in it who saw a woman drop a purse and he eventually returned it to her, after having an imaginary affair with her, if we remember this correctly.  The film ends with a light aircraft crash...

At our house, we're currently watching Loch Ness (we're two episodes from the finish and I think there is more than one person killing people, and I think their attending profiler sucks eggs), classic Dr Who (we're up to poor Colin Baker in our complete tour...poor guy, writing is shithouse ATM and production meh), plus two episodes away from the finish of the 1960s series The Prisoner.

We have committed to watching the first 20 minutes of 2001-A Space Odyssey this evening, and a Pink Floyd concert...

Yeah, me too. While I agree with most opinions that "Better Call Saul" isn't as good or "addictive" as was "Breaking Bad", I like it - and it's nice to see how they get closer to the time of "BB" in S4...

This version, an Australian Spitfire Mk.VIII, has a retractable tailwheel.
It is possibly the best Spit anyway, from a pilot's view.

Great clips, @MeltingMan! :cool Particularly loved the slow-down mechanism for landing on aircraft carriers - we'd not seen that method before!

From something airborne to something ground-dwelling: We filmed this horse, who once thought cows were bogeymen who would eat him, the month he discovered cattle actually run away from horses.  What a difference in outlook that made!   I love the way he's running up to the camera person at the end going, "Aren't I clever?" :rofl

Serious things we are watching:  Two episodes to go on a classic series from 50 years ago.  I highly recommend it! :)

Thanks for the link! :)  ...and those long record titles in the side column!  :rofl

A friend all the way back from high school got Brett into this show when they were teenagers, so it was in his collection and after we met, when he heard I'd not seen it yet, he said, "Give this a shot!"  I don't normally watch spy drama and I loathe James Bond in all its incarnations, but this is different, in the same way Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes are different from standard police dramas, and favourites in this household. :heart-eyes

The setting for The Prisoner is gorgeous - filmed on location in the Welsh seaside town of Portmeirion, with its lovely Mediterranean architecture.  It's not your standard jail, but it's interesting how it functions in the role of a jail - the perfect little village, with extra friendly people whose very friendliness starts to grate pretty quickly, just like lots of other things that tourists normally love and try to surround themselves with.  In part it's the lack of choice that does it.  The programme makes you think about society, power, peer pressure, conformity, how to hang on to your integrity, the nature of freedom.  The lead actor is fabulous in this, his character deprived of freedom in many ways, but cultivating and holding onto other kinds of freedom his oppressors can't touch, and never giving up.

When we're done with this series, I've got a re-watch of Pleasantville lined up - for its fairly obvious parallels:

PS:  Re your second post:  I think Robert Smith is a bit like Marvin the Paranoid Android.  Strong tendency to marvinise,  ;)

Just finished this - very like the Famous Five meeting a horrid supernatural monster.  Was very well acted and shot.  Not usually into Horror but the occasional one is good; Triangle wasn't bad either.

PS: @MeltingMan, we finished The Prisoner last week.  Excellent conclusion.  Got a theory?  :cool

I had such a "green" premonition. Honestly! And then the mirror - reminds me of Dance of the Vampires, only at Polanski the mirror is empty and the hall filled with vampires. You have to understand that first. 👹 The music and interior design is excellent.
And excellent actors too, of course.

Some nice holiday viewing - especially if you're already a fan of Jane Austen - well, this puts a twist on it:

It looks very violent in the promo clip, but I think that's overplayed in the clip. It is actually very funny... I'd call it black comedy, not horror. And how's this for the famous Elizabeth-rejects-Darcy scene revisited:

OMG, @MeltingMan, that kind of stuff causes me to descend into a deep dark basement. :1f631: I keep thinking about the people that were / are killed and maimed with equipment like this.  I can understand you getting excited about the technology though.  :cool   With the planes it's far enough removed for me to enjoy that too. It's funny where we all draw our lines about things like this!

We've just finished watching a two-part version of The Day Of The Triffids, from 2009, a bit interpreted to make it fit modern times.  It wasn't bad!

This one:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1332653/

We've also seen an earlier version:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081850/?ref_=tt_sims_tti

They were both good, in different ways.  Of course, the book is excellent - we're both big John Wyndham fans, me not because I'm a particular sci-fi nut but because he writes with such acumen about human nature, and makes such fascinating "what-if" scenarios.  (The Midwich Cuckoos and The Kraken Wakes are particular favourites of mine, if anyone wants a good read - and they're not long books either, unlike some sci-fi tomes...  :smth023 )

I grew up at a time when the military was still quite present. Nevertheless, I have never had a war and I don't want to either. My grandfather was a fighter pilot and paratrooper and we children naturally had contact with "souvenirs" from the war. I had no fear to touch or handle them. Not even later as a student. I was in contact with "real" weapons, but I actually reject violence. What remains is the fascination for old film recordings. I only know of similar material from the Americans when they conquered Düren.

Expert or not, I agree that Josh Freese is one of the best drummers in the world! (With NIN, what he does needs an "athletic" approach!!) He certainly is the best drummer I ever shook hands with. :happy
(Thanks to my mate Robbie, who I met while in France years ago. He used to be Josh's drum technician and invited me to a gig, when they came to Germany playing for Sublime With Rome. I watched him play from the side of the stage for a while - awesome drummer!) On New Year's Eve I watched a little bit of a Sting (not a big fan) concert on telly, for one reason: the drummer was Josh!  :cool

Anyone else from here in those worldwide marches back then?

Re currently watching, we watched Episode 1 of the new season of Dr Who yesterday and I uncharacteristically fell asleep. :1f634:  I usually like this stuff, and I really like the new Doctor and team, but the plot just had me nodding off - I'm not a fan of spy stories - plus the "science" here was beyond all credulity, and there were several other holes like this that just switched my brain right off.  Tonight, we're watching the second part of this unusually dreary piece...  :-D

This brief and funny video is a surprising good summary of Sikhism, for anyone interested in knowing more about it.

I personally have a great respect for Sikhs, and find a lot of their beliefs align with my own.
If I could choose I'd much prefer to live like this (dedicating my life to others, meditating, chanting, singing, reading ancient teachings from illuminated beings, cultivating the warrior strength within and utilising it towards peaceful endeavours, etc) than in getting more caught up in the ego-driven dream of maya (I say as I write in a forum for a band that my ego tells me I adore? Hmm..)

It's so unbelievably refreshing to see this kind of film-making, with all the space in the world, nothing rushed, invitations to think for yourself and work things out, and wonderful cinematography.  It's so much better than the modern fashion for clobbering people over the head with fast pace, loud music, multiple plots interleaving constantly and never staying with any of them for substantial amounts of time - gawd, I hate that, and they're currently killing Dr Who with it too, unfortunately, and it's so wonderful to see something consciously made differently to this blasted formula.  It was spellbinding, we were barely breathing, and you could have heard a pin drop!

Twin Peaks
...yes I am REALLY late to the party on this one. I saw the first season many years ago, liked it but didn't really get the big hype about it.
However 2 people I greatly respect (David Bowie and Trent Reznor) have connections to this series so I felt the need to try again, and watch beyond the first season.
So here I am: rewatched the first season (I enjoyed it much more on second viewing), then the second season (and the answer to who killed Laura Palmer... jeez!)...it seemed to hit a plateau on the back half of the second season, but then into the film Fire Walk With Me which I thoroughly enjoyed, but now into the newest season and within 2 episodes my mind is utterly blown!! I've now watched 5 episodes and the amazement continues every moment. I don't think I've ever exclaimed "woah!!!" so many times in my life. This new season is miles ahead of what preceded it. So glad there are so many episodes left, and I have no clue how it will unfold, it's brilliant and unlike anything I've ever seen, I'm completely hooked.

I'm glad to hear you did watch it in the perfect order (first S1&2, then the movie FWWM, then S3)!  :smth023

There was a bit of a "weak period" in season 2 (Lynch wasn't often on set, he was making "Wild at heart" at the time).

What "FWWM" misses, is the input of Mark Frost (who basically was the "showrunner" on S1/2). I was glad they got together to write S3 (basically Lynch says it's Frost who owns a typewriter, he just voices ideas and Frost writes them down and tries to put them into order).

S3 is crazy & full of "echoes" out of S1/2&FWWM, plus lots of other stuff... Enjoy!

That looks really horrible, @Ulrich, and it better be too, because we humans are so easy to anaesthetise about stuff like this.  By the way, I read recently that one of the reasons Germany is a world leader in getting their population on renewable energy sources is because of the public backlash in Germany about nuclear power, and citizens deciding they wanted solar, wind etc, not a nuclear future.  Well done to your citizens - I wish Australians were this proactive on the scale German citizens were.  We still have dumbass politicians discussing building nuclear reactors, and subsidising the mining and burning of coal with our tax money, when there's enough solar energy here to run us many times over, if only we use the available technology to capture it.  (This message is brought to you by an off-grid household running on solar and batteries for electricity, passive solar design for the majority of home heating and cooling, an average of two nights a week in winter with the wood fire on, which also backup heats the solar rooftop hot water, pedestal and ceiling fans to keep air moving in summer heatwaves, and other things like this - all done on an average building budget, showing that anyone with an average budget can get off non-renewables for running their buildings.)

And speaking of horrible, did you ever watch this?  I wish it was compulsory viewing for all politicians (and all voters, to be fair).

We're currently watching Giles Coren & Sue Perkins's travels through the culinary aspects of various historical epochs in various countries - we first saw that when it came out but it was such good fun we're doing it again.

The two hilarious presenters get a medical check, then dress up in the period costume of the time and spend a week trying out each epoch before getting a follow-up medical check where blood test results, body fat etc are compared to original values.

The pilot episode looks at upper-class Edwardian England:

The first breakfast alone has enough food to last our household for two days.  Everything is meat meat meat and there's scarcely any fruit or vegetables in sight, and they've apparently never heard of a salad.  When fruit and vegetables do make an appearance they're usually overcooked to the point of flaccidity.  In fact, it's extraordinary that with all the expense and excess around food, most of it was done in a completely unappetising way - I'd be interested in very few of these dishes myself.

I concluded that upper-class Edwardian cooking was about show, status and greed, rather than enjoyment and nutrition, and generally a waste of ingredients, not to mention blind to what should be the nutritional foundation of any meal - fruit and vegetables and (mostly) wholemeal / wholegrain cereals, legumes etc.

Oh, and if you watch this episode and get to the duck press, tell me if that didn't make you want to throw up, rather than go, "Mmmmmmmh, yum!"... likewise with their "invalid food" of mince on white toast, and the "tonic" made from water they soaked raw mincemeat in (hmmmm, food poisoning, parasites etc) - because when you've got indigestion from eating tons of meat and scarcely a vegetable, what should you do to fix it other than have more meat and white bread... :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

In many ways the fact that the Edwardian upper classes ate like this and their medical establishment didn't notice the problem, in fact contributed to the problem with totally idiotic recommendations, parallels our own ridiculous age which has so many elephants in the room that even most of our "experts" don't seem to see, let alone discuss...

The human race is doomed, and deservedly so.

Hello, @word_on_a_wing!   :)   How exciting!  Feel free to tell us more!   :cool

We're watching the Supersizers eat the diet of Wartime Britons.  The plus side was the focus on vegetables, but unfortunately their translation was unbelievably unappetising - haven't these people heard of herbs and not overcooking things?   And OMG the mock cream, and the Spam... :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

We re-watched this and highly recommend it for various reasons...especially if you've lived through the 80s, but it's also thought-provoking and funny at the same time.

A little background:

Title: Re: Currently Watching
Post by: SueC on May 10, 2021, 16:11:31
We've looked at Supersizers in various British historical eras of mostly consuming meat and alcohol (Edwardian, Restoration, Victorian - urgh, urgh, urgh  :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) - and the thing that amazed us about all three periods is how much money the upper echelons spent on huge excesses of food, how much of it they wasted, and how terrible the food was for the price they were paying:  Literally nothing there we'd have enjoyed eating, and all of it really bad nutrition - hardly a vegetable in sight, except boiled cabbage, rubbery celery, and various forms of potatoes.

Tonight we arrived in the 1970s, and I thought I'd share this one given that most of us posting here have lived through at least part of this decade and remember some of it.  Brett and I were born in the early 70s and therefore have vivid memories of the decade, so this programme was like a time warp - the horrible "modern" architecture (which we can now all agree looks shoddy, but back then some people thought was space-age), the hideous interior decorating with orange and lime green plus the inevitable brown sofas and full-wall wood panelling, the flares, the technicolour eye shadows, the fur coats, hopping balls, discos, etc.

But the biggest shock was seeing the table of typical 70s ingredients for a week - they've been doing this for all the time periods, and this was the first time the table was covered in packets and cans, instead of actual unpackaged food.  And I remember that it was exactly like this when I was a child - most of our vegetables other than potatoes, onions, carrots and celery came from tins or the deep freeze - tinned peas, tinned beans (I didn't have a fresh bean till I was a teenager), tinned mushrooms (ditto).  Salad ingredients were limp iceberg lettuce, typical plastic supermarket tomatoes and fairly rubbery cucumbers.

All the packet foods make you gag - "pork faggots" which were under 20% meat (and how hard is it to make your own rissoles, or your own mashed potatoes, or to prepare some fresh vegetables?), boil-in-the-bag fish and various other precursors to the microwave meal... this is when it began - all the excessive packaging leaching plasticisers into pretend foods, and making an ongoing landfill problem - and the preservatives which an undertaker once told me now keep human corpses fresher for longer than when her grandfather ran the family business, because most people's bodies are now filled with them from these convenience foods.

Enjoy the tooth-rotting spectacle of your childhood lollies - remember the sherbet?  The lolly cigarettes?  The pink Hubba-Bubba?  The milk bottles?  The edible bracelets?

If anyone feels like more 70s time warp stuff, we can also recommend:

The trailer makes it look a bit annoying but it's really not. It's a beautifully written and shot film about legal and illegal immigration, prejudice, and above all childhood. A new documentary about and with John Carpenter produced by ARTE and therefore really worth seeing. He takes us to the original locations, but more importantly, he goes into how the score was made. I always knew that he did most of it himself. The old movie theater is also very impressive. Adrienne Barbeau also has a say. For fans: have a look. We're nearing the end of our trawl through all the classic Dr Who series and have hit a purple patch. Ghostlight was so well done; and this next one we're in the middle of is so excellent - the storytelling, the sets and locations, the acting, the costumes/make-up (nice 40s period piece, the monsters look like something that's been mouldering away at sea for centuries, the newer vampires look ultra gothic and it's all so effective), the themes and ideas in this...

CLASSIC DR WHO PLUS 1996 DR WHO MOVIE

We just finished watching the 1996 Dr Who movie - which is sort of the bridge between the classic series and the modern series. This was after concluding our project of over five years, to watch all available classic Dr Who episodes (1963-1989). Brett is a huge fan from way back and has basically all the available classic Dr Who plus novelisations, audio dramas etc etc - and he writes Cyberman essays for Gallifrey Base.

Clearly, Brett had seen most of the classic episodes before, but I wasn't a Dr Who fan when I met him. That's because every time I accidentally chanced on the programme as a teenager in the 80s, all I could see were cheesy props, a male cast as a hero and females in the role of dumb blonde (e.g. Jo, in the 70s re-runs), half-naked eye candy (Leela, in the 70s re-runs, and don't forget Peri's amazing inflatable gazongas in the 80s), peril monkey (lots of them) and/or Greek chorus (ditto), and this didn't appeal to me at all - I had zero interest in what I saw as space soap opera for males. I didn't really like science fiction anyway, although I very much enjoyed reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a mid-teen.

Having now watched the classic series, I do think my original criticisms are still valid for lengthy stretches of the show, but I've also come to appreciate the exceptions - the significant amount of times the more enlightened script writers wrote solid, useful, intelligent female characters, or improved the on-screen lot of an established "peril monkey/screamer/dumb but nice sidekick." Actually the original companions back in 1963 weren't bad in that respect (but I wasn't around to see it back then and never saw re-runs) - Susan was an intelligent child, Barbara and Ian were intelligent adults, interactions were civilised and not particularly gender-biased.

The original crew

The rot didn't really begin to set in until we got Jo as a sidekick to third doctor Jon Pertwee. Although she was formally a significantly qualified character (intelligence and self-defence training), she came across as self-infantilising, and was an awful "peril monkey" who screamed enough to shatter glass. It didn't help that Pertwee's doctor was rather paternalistic. The Pertwee era had started with the promising female character of Liz Shaw, a Cambridge scientist drafted by UNIT - good for girl (and boy) audience members of this children's/family programme to see. Jo was eventually replaced with journalist Sarah Jane Smith, a far better female character, smart, independent, a problem-solver and not a regular screamer.

Sarah Jane Smith and Dr Who

Sarah Jane was unfortunately replaced with Leela a couple of years into Tom Baker's stint. I rather liked Leela as a character - she was independent, strong, smart, and in those ways a good role model - but the me Tarzan/you Jane outfit with full display of cleavage, very short skirt and "FM boots" made her the first overtly sexualised Dr Who companion - and sexualised for the purposes of being eye candy for the male audience, with some of the production team admitting the idea was to give the fathers watching the show something to look at (God I wanted to shoot them; deliberately dressing an actress that way in order to give not just men, but married men someone to leer at - I wonder how Louise Jameson, who played Leela, felt about this - it's rather like the ridiculous contemporary insistence by male sporting bureaucrats on female beach volleyball players wearing revealing clothing, such as male competitors of course don't have to wear, and fining them when they wear clothes they find more comfortable - there's a difference between people choosing to wear something revealing, and being forced to do so by others). This is a decade after the start of Dr Who and a retrograde step, and it spoilt what was otherwise a good show - Tom Baker's early years are some of my favourite years from classic Dr Who.

Get your kinky outfits right here

I'm mostly going to skip over a gender representation analysis of the rest of the classic era, and just say that Colin Baker was my least favourite Dr Who ever, in part because of the way he played the character and in part because of uninspirational writing. His predecessor whose name escapes me because I always think of him as Tristan from All Creatures Great and Small was OK towards the end of his tenure, and his successor Sylvester McCoy was a gem who nailed the role, in spite of not getting anywhere near the best stories written for the classic series. I love his acting, and the character he constructed for Dr Who. The less is said about Mel, the better - and by now we're in the late 80s, how ironic is that (but watch Ashes to Ashes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk0ioIvpjb4) for a satirical depiction of sexism and other -ims in the 80s - and above all, watch it because it's an excellent show).

Dr Who and Ace in WWII

After Mel came Ace, which resulted in a very good mentor-young person dynamic - Sylvester McCoy's doctor was never patronising and Ace was no doormat; it was nice to see such a healthy, positive, productive relationship between a middle-aged (actually ancient, he's over 800) person and a young person. I bet lots of high schoolers would have enjoyed being taught by someone with the seventh doctor's good attitude, thoughtfulness, solid ethics, comedic theatrics, joie de vivre and respect for others, including young people.

It's very sad that the BBC axed the classic series during McCoy's run, and that by the time he was Dr Who, the scriptwriting and production were mostly lacklustre - his acting deserved better. And he briefly did get a chance to showcase his considerable skills in a better kind of production, when he opened the 1996 Dr Who movie, before transforming into Paul McGann.

We watched the Dr Who movie a couple of nights ago, as our bridge from the classical to the modern series - in which I have never seen the Christopher Ecclestone years (except The Unearthly Child episode which I loved) and most of David Tennant's (I don't like his Dr Who, much as I liked him in Broadchurch, but do love the episode Blink (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHz8hulp2RM) - it's excellent and he's largely not in it). I'll be very happy to re-watch the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras - I liked both their takes on Dr Who - plus the best episodes from Jodie Whittaker's tenure (I largely don't like the writing and production values of the current series, which is a shame - there's just so little space to breathe and reflect anymore, for example, just constant bombardment with action and noise).

The 1996 movie was a co-production between the BBC and the team of an expat British childhood fan now working in American TV production. Overall I really like the film - with the exception of the apparently inevitable cliches that are thrown into productions for a part-American audience: Namely, the gangsters, the shootings, and the car chases - all of which I can do without, thank you very much, and that bit didn't feel like Dr Who to me, although admittedly, this story was set in America and I guess you can just say, "Well, he's visiting America and all that BS is culturally normal there."

The infamous green bubble-wrap monster

It was nice to see Dr Who with some glossy production for once - although I also firmly like the best of the old stage-play-like approach in the classic series, for example, The Monster of Pelodon, and I actually dislike overly glossy modern productions - and though green-painted bubble-wrap monsters are a bit of a stretch, I did enjoy the audience having to use their imagination rather than being spoon-fed ready-made CGI monsters - and I do like to see how the art departments made props within the financial and material constraints they had (you get this at length in the specials).

To me, the very best thing about the 1996 Dr Who movie was the acting by both Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann, who are both brilliant in different ways. If you watch McGann's Dr Who audition, you can see why he's compelling - look at how he goes from almost still features to a fireworks of expressions in a moment - look at the enthusiasm:

There was a bit of criticism about this Dr Who incarnation engaging in snogging, but I thought it would have been strange if he'd not kissed a person who he was clearly falling in love with, and it was all tastefully presented - neither twee nor excessive, just natural. After all, Dr Who didn't sign up to the Catholic priesthood in any of the adventures I ever saw, and it's not as if this was his travel companion - although when given a chance to become one at the end, she chooses her own life instead, having learnt a lot about who she is and intending to employ the new understanding - and I thought that was an excellent ending: Sometimes just the change in yourself and the memory of a set of experiences are enough.

I think it's a terrible shame they never made proper seasons with Paul McGann in the lead - it had so much potential. He re-appeared briefly in Night of the Doctor, which we've seen before but are going to watch again, before getting into Christopher Ecclestone's stories.

A closing note: If anyone out there ever decides to watch or re-watch classic Dr Who, might I recommend the very hilarious companion blog called Adventures with the Wife in Space (http://wifeinspace.com/), in which Dr Who devotee Neil Perryman did the tour of the entire classic series with wife, also called Sue, and recorded her responses as they went. Those two are nearly as much fun as Giles Coran and Sue Perkins doing their documentary tour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOE0VP0EZ0M&list=PLBD975732056866C4) of food through various historical periods, in which they dress up for each era and then go try it out - for education combined with laughs, not even Horrible Histories (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o8tJfcxoCA) can beat this pair!

AND THIS FROM THE BBC?

Warning: Rant ahead

We're currently watching Series 2 of Down to Earth, and do not recommend it. (I commented on Series 1 as part of a recent book review of the material the TV series was allegedly based on here (http://curefans.com/index.php?topic=4324.msg775398#msg775398)). The BBC managed to turn an interesting true story into a soapified confection. I originally only saw Series 1, and caught one or two episodes of the two subsequent series on the hop, but missed most of them. This is why we decided to keep watching to see what became of the TV version.

It got worse. We're five episodes into Series 2 and have watched with increasing chagrin, and boredom. The difference between Series 1 and Series 2 is that at least Series 1 had a focus, while Series 2 bumbles along like a terminal soap opera from one episode with nothing to say to the next, ad infinitum. Brian gets worse - he's always been inept and shouty; now he's becoming totally self-centred, he's a blowhard and a bully as well as a professional victim when things inevitably go wrong - and he appears to learn nothing from his many mistakes.

We've just sat through an episode where, after the death of his mother, he develops malign theories about other people and goes to confront a harmless old man who was a friend of his mother's, convinced he was trying to con her out of money. Brian approaches the old man rudely and hostilely in his own home and isn't interested in his side of the story, he just shoots off, judge, jury and executioner, leaving the old man in tears. Later on he physically and verbally assaults the man at the funeral, even though he's already aware he was wrong in his original assumptions. Then he repeats the pattern with another person - and really, he's been yelling and bullying as part of his modus operandi all along.

What is the point of a TV series which has the central male character behaving badly on a regular basis, hurting and harming other people, without any apparent critique? You get the strong impression that the writers, like his TV family, thought, "Oh, that's just Brian." Each time Brian hurts others, he ends up feeling sorry for himself instead of the people he's hurt, and mostly the family just "there, there" him and enable his big-baby behaviour. That's not OK. The standards we walk past are the standards we accept. It's no different in our own families - people are responsible for their own behaviour, and need to be held to account when their actions hurt and harm other people.

Holding a person to account is not walking them back to a place to get them to apologise for their behaviour. That's what you might do with a child, but in my view it's not appropriate to do that with an adult - the apology needs to come from them, be their idea, and their own undertaking. The idea that an adult should have another person to parent them into good behaviour is absurd. An adult needs to parent themselves into good behaviour when necessary, and they can consult other people for help if they need it.

We watched a brilliant film (http://curefans.com/index.php?topic=3675.msg775639#msg775639) about hurt, harm and the culture of misogyny earlier this week. The film showed that misogyny isn't just perpetuated by males, it's also perpetuated by females. That's entirely my own experience as well, both from childhood and from adulthood. Women can internalise misogyny and pass it on to their own offspring, and they can dish it out in the workplace and other public spaces. It seems to me that misogyny is part of a swathe of general human toxicity that abounds in the general population, and that infected people pass this kind of thing on to other susceptible people (such as children in their care, and adults with low empathy and/or low capacities for critical and independent thinking). Also, the system itself is infected with this stuff and perpetuates it.

So after watching that film, I find it positively toxic that the BBC would show a programme like Down to Earth where a male (or anybody, but this is a male) perpetrates his BS on other people around him year after year, with so little attempt at critique and with what looks to me like way too much enabling from his own family and society, and we're supposed to go, "Well, that's just Brian for you, and Faith clearly loves and forgives him!"???

Brian is an emotional three-year-old who holds other people to ransom on a regular basis. In transactional analysis terms, he swings from child to authoritarian parent and spouse, and back again, but never seems to act like an adult. Faith is the adult in the relationship, but too often she also parents Brian, as if he's a mentally incapacitated child she has to make allowances for. The expectations on him are way too low. People will often live down to your expectations if you lower them enough, instead of expecting better from them. Whether it's a politician or a spouse or a child, BS is BS and if we accept it and walk past it, we enable it. The problem is a two-way problem - the person with the bad behaviour, and the lack of consequences from their networks.

Brett and I both agreed that neither of us could love or would want to remain with a partner who routinely treated other people like shit, and didn't mend his or her ways. While she is a strong character and speaks her own mind freely, Faith too frequently provides a soft landing for Brian to fall back on when he turns into a self-pitying man-baby after once again perpetuating another abuse cycle. This perpetuates misogyny by sending the message that this is somehow OK. He, and the people around him, learn nothing useful when that kind of behaviour is rewarded with hugs and loving attention, instead of an adult-to-adult talk about how you're not going to stand by and watch him treat people like shit and then be his teddy-bear when he comes to you crying because it's backfired.

People like Faith, by putting up with people like Brian, end up spending their lifetimes living with big, irresponsible babies instead of self-educating, self-correcting adults with whom they can have a truly loving and egalitarian adult relationship - and they model that pattern as acceptable and normal for their own children, and wider society. Misogyny is the expectation that women will caretake male needs - household, sexual, emotional, career etc - that it's their job to bend over backwards, as a gender, to further the agendas of the other gender. A decent relationship rises above toxic gender stereotypes like this and is about healthy cooperation and people bringing out the best in each other, and mutually supporting each other, and being responsible for their own behaviour and lives.

I've gone out with people like Brian and had a marriage proposal from someone like this, and his own mother told me, "Don't do it, he's just like his father, and you'd be as unhappy as I am." I had no intentions of marrying someone like this, once I could see it - I then decided to raise the standards of what I would accept from other people, and as a result I'm married to Brett, who's not a bully or a big baby but a creative, interesting, responsible adult and my equal. It's not that we're not flawed, but that we're fundamentally both adults who take responsibility for their own lives, enjoy continuous learning and care about being fair to others.

The culture of misogyny is a complicated thing, and of course, misogyny is just one particular form of entitlement, of many - of people thinking they're somehow better than others and deserve more than others. But we're the ones who need to set our own standards of what we find acceptable treatment of self and others and what we don't, instead of just absorbing the various toxicities of our families of origin, societies and cultures, and perpetuating these. It's not a simple thing, but mindless treatments on TV shows like Down to Earth are really unhelpful and just normalise things that are offensive and deeply unfair.

I'm not saying don't watch it, I'm just saying watch it critically if you're gonna. And yeah, there's also many better things to watch, which ask questions and demand your careful thinking and will further your ability to become a better version of yourself, rather than seek to anaesthetise you into accepting unacceptable things as "normal".

I'm not quite done ranting. The musical score for this series was really nice first time around, but each passage is repeated endlessly in the series until it becomes predictable: Oh look, here's the "sad" passage again. Here's the "action" piece again. Here's the "hoe-down, hey, we're in the country." Couldn't they afford any new music for three long years?

Also, there's lots of animals in the series, but particularly in Series 2, the animal handling, animal husbandry and alleged animal behaviour become a joke. Horses in a free-range situation do not run over people coming to them with food, nor will one after the other be trampling the person - they stop short, especially if a person has left the feed bucket and is running away, as happened in the series - they'd never pursue a person when they can see the bucket on the ground. You can be stampeded by cattle, but horses don't behave that way. Furthermore: Horses knee deep in grass aren't hungry. You don't keep a steer in a stable if you've got a field of grass in the springtime that he could be feeding himself on. You don't buy a farmer who just had anthrax spores found on his property new livestock as a present, not until the anthrax situation has been cleared. And it's not believable that a farmer is bonding with two sheep who are clearly restrained with off-camera ropes on their halters and who are rebuffing repeated attempts at having food shoved in their faces. Those animals didn't want to be there, no matter what the script said, and this would have been obvious to anyone with a reasonable amount of exposure to farm animals.

It's not often I've been disappointed by a BBC production. Maybe I've not been watching enough of them to find one that seems to me to have the low standards found in many commercial channels...

G*cc* Love Parade

For the first thirty minutes I felt like I was in the Overlook Hotel. The background music managed that alone. And another classic film (besides The Shining) literally imposed itself: Chinatown. I don't have to say a lot about the show: G*cc* doesn't always hit the nerve, but very often. Pure goosebumps! By the way, thank you for the cooperation with TNF.

23:41 😄

PS: I'm a little ambivalent about the film, which will also be shown in German cinemas from December 2nd. Not everyone can identify with Lady Gaga. She will undoubtedly be nominated for one or more Academy Awards, but on the catwalk and in interviews she documents her own personality and not necessarily her attachment to the brand / film role. I find that a bit insensitive. It's different with Jared Leto, who was also quite 'distorted' in the role. Was it necessary to alienate such a handsome actor? Couldn't his part have been taken over by one of the 'old stars'? After all, more than two main roles (male / female) were cast here. Open questions ...

Neighbors from Hell (by piddleass)

I was and am in a similar situation. Although the rest periods (10 p.m.-6 a.m., 1 p.m.-3 p.m.) are required by law in Germany, carpeting is not (anymore). If I were to work, I would have to wear silicone earplugs all the time, unless the 'polluter' above me is not in the house. The problem is also that the landlords shy away from any potential conflict. When listening to music, the "silence afterwards" is very important. Even if I've seen a 90min film. This has not been possible for years because I keep hearing steps, voices or annoying noises of any kind. The solution would be a more expensive apartment, and there certainly is. At the moment it is unclear whether and when I will be ready.

Am I alone? (by piddleass)

This November has been too gloomy here too, although autumn is actually my favorite time of the year. The problem is that it doesn't get really light even during the day when the sky is overcast. It can rain or not. When the sun went down today, I was very aware of that. It is the blue hour. I lit my Advent candle and for the first time (after weeks) I was very calm inside. Probably also because I had my last appointment on Monday this year. I had planned to be calmer and more relaxed anyway. Let us think of the people near or north of the Arctic Circle. An alternative would be visits to the solarium. This has a positive effect on the mood, but affects the skin in the long term. So everyone has to find a compromise for themselves. 🤓

I watched two documentaries on ARTE (Auslaufmodell supermarket?; The precarious society) that are linked in a certain way. The woman from Sweden, for example, pays too much for her social housing. The result: she has to save on groceries. Twenty years ago, I noticed that branded products were disappearing from the shelves. When I asked, the reason given was that these products are too expensive to buy. Since then, the number of food discounters in our district has halved. A signature drive saved the last market from closure...but for how long? Base salary is not a new idea. I agree with Guy Standing that EUR 560 a month is not enough. It should be around 1000 EUR. Demographics and migration are not in balance. Some have to live 'from hand to mouth' while others want to achieve a high standard of living as quickly as possible, but that alone is not enough. The realization often comes too late or not at all.

For a documentation of this kind, unfortunately too many 'blank spots'.  :?

How An Eagle Squadron Was Wiped Out In Minutes | Morlaix 1942

The person who arranged for the conversion to Spitfire IX shares responsibility. Mark Vb with 30 gallon auxiliary tanks could have performed the operation better. In a Circus or Sweep, the goal was to attract opposing planes. So why wasn't the mission canceled or postponed?!

Quote from: armyaircorpsmuseum.orgThe 97th Bombardment Group was part of the 8th Air Force in England from June until November of 1942. They transferred to the newly created 12th AF in North Africa in November of 1942. They then became the 15th AF based in Italy.

Hmm... it seems they couldn't cope with the weather.

The cameraman was visibly moved. This partly affected the image quality. Cases of arson, theft and damage to property in cemeteries in Central Europe are not uncommon, but this is of a different quality. There is just one thing I would like to point out in this context, and that is the social media hype surrounding Judaism, which Dr. H. Abramson regretted over the past year. I would like to join in without coming off as an anti-Semite.

It was originally planned by General Erich Ludendorff as Operation George but was reduced to Operation Georgette, with the objective of capturing Ypres, forcing the British forces back to the Channel ports and out of the war. In planning, execution and effects, Georgette was similar to (although smaller than) Operation Michael, earlier in the Spring Offensive.

Spitfire ML295 Gun Camera Footage

I did a little research in my RAF files. After the aircraft had been declared as Cat.E, i.e. 'total damage', on July 30th, 1944, the trail was lost. But obviously it must have been repaired! This is proven by the 8mm recordings, in particular from December 27th and 29th, 1944. But F/L R.M. Cook flew NH380 on those days. They are so fascinating because, after almost eighty years, they undoubtedly reflect the German machine type, so thank you very much.  :smth023

And the second is the admission that here, similar to Ukraine, we are dealing with a protracted neighborhood conflict that could lead to a global war because, to put it bluntly, Moscow and Beijing believe that the Western democracies are in a kind of decline.
