Title: What One Question Would You Ask Robert If Given The Chance?
Post by: nausearockpig on December 29, 2005, 03:04:48
If you were given the chance to ask Robert ONE QUESTION ONLY, what would it be?

Mine would be:

[As i'm handing him a CD] "Can you record and release these songs that i've written?"

I love hearing The Cure cover songs.
I remember that in 2000 there was a competition that the band were involved in that they would do a cover song backstage at the Livid Festival [top gig....] as chosen by one fan.

the song they did was "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I was very disappointed that they didn't pick my entry of "Social Disaster" by Regurgitator [my favourite Australian band]

anyway, hearing them play my music would be enough for me to pee my pants..

i figure that because i started this thread, i can add in extra questions [from serious to stupid]:

Can i have a copy of each show that you have taped?

What really happened with Roger and Perry? [probably a bit of a sore point]

When are you touring Australia again you bastards?

Can i have one of your electric guitars?

Can i have a million pounds?

Can i join your band?

Oh, man...

I'd ask him:

"Whats up, man?! Are you OK, man?! How's it goin'?! Cool..."

And then I'd tap him on the back saing:

"You're OK, man..."

:-D

My questions would be:

- When do you want to make a concert at Malaysia?
- Can u sing 'love song' live at my wedding as a gift to my future wife..?

i had the chance 2000 after the concert in munich .........
and i was thinking about what question would i ask since i became a cure fan...

and then i met him, and all things i imagined were totally different.
robert is really nice and polite, not a "rock superstar"

and so i had to say " thank you robert for over 20 years with wonderfull music, which is part of my life"

and my question was" when will you release the new record ?"

he really gets a little hit by this question, he was very surprised and looked like" we just released bloodflowers, making a tour, and you want a new record ? what do you want more ?????????????????????"
but in his polite way he just turned the eyes and said " we will see" he smiled saying that :-)

"How are you?"

i was actually going to say something similar - something decent and polite to say when you meet a person, any person....
ok i know i might sound like a smart*ss but honestly i can't really think of anything i'd want to ask him, not to mention if i'd ever want to meet him. because i find it's mostly ever so awkward to meet people you've grown to admire. it can break the spell somehow, like "is that it then?"
there's absolutely no curtain between yourself and the music but i think it's better to have the curtain between yourself and the person behind the music...?

Further, everything disappoints me, and I think the ideal of Robert I have in my head could not be matched by the real Robert, who has flaws just like everyone else. I think I would find myself disappointed that he isn't the superhuman I think of him as. The logical part of me knows that he's human, that he has flaws like the rest of us, but to see it in-person, I think, would make it a truth, irrevocably.

But I would like to meet him, just to say hello, perhaps thank you. A real conversation, however, could shatter me.

i dont know what i would ask. probably can i have a photo  or about playing nearer to me. or if i had the chance to think about it while i was there i'd ask whether they would consider releasing another real cheesy single ala LGTB

I met the entire band in Camden, NJ in 2004.  I told Robert that the Carson, CA would be my 26th time seeing them (it turned out to be my 27th...) and asked if there was any way they could play Faith at that show.

He looked down at first then back up and looked me right in the eyes and said "Well, it is on the list as a maybe for tonight."  Sure enough, they played it that night.  I like to think that they played it for me.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :rocker

That is so cool!

I don't know what question I would ask Robert. But If I met, him, face to face, I would want to give my drawings of him and the band.(And I would, most defintly, have them with me, if this happen before or after a concert)

I probably ask him. If he could play Cold (if by chance, we meer at the NYC gig). I love that song and they haven't played it  since Trilogy.

If I met Robert, I'd do a Robert-esque thing like looking down at my shoes. One of us would have to make the initiative and go ahead and talk...or else we'd stand awkwardly and stare off into space.

I have the same problem he had a while back...not being able to look straight at people...

And then I'd ask, "Robert, why CAN'T I be you?" ;)

The camden story was great BTW.

I met Robert, before the Melbourne show, I just said 'Hi', was lost for words, and  i am sure i said 'thank you so much'-or similar words,
and gave a meaningful head nod, Just to see him and look into those eyes was timeless for me,
I stayed around for awhile, there were other people around at the time, making small talk,
Iam shy, so didnt want to compete for conversation,
But what stays with me is how comfortable he makes people, makes them laugh- made me laugh
I cant remember all of the conversation between everyone, my legs were shaking, my heart was rushing.
I wish i had a gift to give him, but i didnt actually think i would end up meeting him, and seeing the band
aswell. ~I used to work associated with the Rod Laver Arena, Tennis Centre etc (sportin related arena's usually)
-4ish months ago- so I could get in through prior work mates/friends/associates.
Simons also great, joking and smiling, laughing. And they must have been tired also.
Wonderful people ~all of them.
I do remember alot of the conversation most of it with other people,
Its a time I treasure, and keep close to my heart., hardly ever mention it~ its a personal moment I will hold onto.
Very personal to me, so i dont want to analyse it, all. But the vibes and feelings were so nice  :smth023

I'm afraid if I meet him I'd fall to my knees and pray. He is literally like...that amazing!
I'd be shy too, I probably would say hi in a very quiet voice. I'm usually a big joker, but around people I respect or have never met, I act very content and quiet.

or iam not sure- if i knew where i'd lost it - It wouldnt be lost !! buga !!!!!!!!
But that would be just to prove it anyways, and i dont need that, its something just for me to hold onto,
special.~ The memory that is.

Yeh i just wish i had something i couldve given to Robert at the time, because i dont like to ask for
autograf's, Feel greedy doing that, So i usually give a gift- But shamefully i had nothing...... because
i was also going to the concert on the same night., so didnt wanna take good camera, Or things that
i could loose.

I'm trying everything I can to get that same hairdo...I hate myself for having such ugly hair...it's flat and long and thin...it blows around in the wind too easily, so hairspray never works for me...

But iam definately not Robert, unfortunately
~you gotta tease it, You know drag a comb backwards up the hair, especially alot underneath to add bulk. There is some full-on strong hairspray now, out there.
But yes Robert does have great thick, and plenty of hair,. My hair is fine aswell.  :(

Even Roberts hair went a bit flat at the back during Melb concert, but shi after 3 hours, and he still looked great anyways,
Onstage 3:15mins  and not a second less,
still amazed at how good that concert was, better than when i saw them years ago !!

I Just Love Robert so much, How could anyone not ?

If you live near Philly & want to enter here's the link:

Here's what I have so far. I know not to original!

Do you ever visit any Cure fan forums or web sites?

What Cure song are you ready to retire? (Won't play again ever!)

If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing?

What do you like better, recording a new album or going on tour?

Thanks!

I'm sure he's sick of the same old sycophantic fan questions, so I'd probably try to stay away from a Cure-related line of questioning.  The only band-related question I think I may ask him would be something along the lines of what, if push came to shove, were his top 3-5 favorite Cure concerts he's performed over the years.

I wouldn't be able to play it cool at all if the time ever came, I'm afraid.  Truth be told, I would probably take a total geek tack and ask him whether he still indulges his interest in astronomy and space stuff.  Yes, as shameful as it is to admit, my ultimate conversation with the Cure kingpin himself would be about best observing locations, favorite deep-sky objects, what kind of telescope he takes out to the countryside, science, physics that sort of nerdy stuff .  For me, that would be f**king spectacular.  Bet you he'd remember that conversation  :smth023.  He'd probably get a kick out of it.  A refreshing change of pace.  Something personal but fun and non-threatening would probably be the best approach for me.

sometimes you stumble to passages where someone says something that you find to be so true that it's almost shocking that it came out of someone else's mouth and not from your own.
one of the RS interview passages forever stuck into my mind due to this comes from a Q magazine interview in july 2004, where robert was asked:

Q: Is there anything you do that is completely unrelated to the band?

RS: Astronomy. That's why I moved out of London. One of the main reasons was to get dark skies. I find looking through a telescope is the most therapeutic thing I've ever done. If I ever get distressed about things I just go and look at the star for an hour. It's like icy cold water flowing through your mind.

I just totally agree with that.
One of my best personal memories from years ago are some late summers (when it's back into being dark at nights here - i live high up here in the north where we get sunshine throughout most of the night in summers ) spent on the countryside and going out to the warm summer night with a telescope and just looking up there, feeling that icy cold water flowing through your mind. that's exactly how i always felt like.
and one thing i hate the most as i nowadays live in a city is the loss of the night skies.
the saddest thing is that sometimes one almost forgets it's up there. and that most people never even think about it, i assume.

ps. don't get astronomy mixed up with astrology: the same Q mag Q&A continued:

Q: Do you believe in astrology?

RS: Do I f*ck! Anyone who believes in astrology is doomed. The whole thing is just f*cking absurd!

the full Q mag Q & A article (mentioned above ) + some other similar articles here:

--> http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,5235.msg51712.html

most of the questions are rather boring ones, people always ask the same kind of thing all over again (and the magazine also wants to print the same kind of things all over again). yet there are some a bit more clever ones there too/some funny facts to be learned.

Q: Which South Park character do you most closely identify with?

RS: Mr. Garrison!

RS: Astronomy. That's why I moved out of London. One of the main reasons was to get dark skies. I find looking through a telescope is the most therapeutic thing I've ever done. If I ever get distressed about things I just go and look at the star for an hour. It's like icy cold water flowing through your mind.

Ahhh...thanks for that j.b..  I knew I remembered him talking about his astronomical hobby in interviews before.  I know Robert mentioned it even earlier than 2004.  I remember being so impressed reading about how he went observing at his country home.  Then I was even more excited that he actually wrote a song based around the 1994 Shoemaker-Levy comet collision with Jupiter for the Wild Mood Swings album.  It's always refreshing to know that people whom you admire have similar grounded interests and passions.  Reminds you that they are, after all, just as human as the next person.

Thanks for the interview links.

I would ask him about the details of how he met Mary, and if it was love at first sight, of if she grew on him.

yes i've always read hm say that a lot earlier than 2004 (just can't remember all the exact places where!).
at least in the WMS tour book he mentioned "staring into space" as one of his favorite pastimes. but there are more precise references to it somewhere in interviews, over the years, going all the back to the 80s if i'm not mistaken(?).

me too. i remember i was a bit disappointed with the song music wise but lyrically i felt very much "at home" with it from the beginning, if that means anything to anyone. i remember waiting for the comet collision and later trying to observe the signs of the impacts with a small pitiful telescope (although the fact that it happened in july when the skies are way too bright for star watching around here made it a bit difficult at first).
anyway, the sheer idea that someone turned it into a song was heart-warming.

and now, i suppose 'underneath the stars' kind of lines up with this "space genre" (ha) too, in a way.

That's too bad.  I think "Jupiter Crash" is a gorgeous song, both musically and lyrically.  It's an appealing romantic fantasy for a space fan like me.  Scanning the celestial sights on a hilltop above the sea with a distracting female significant other by your side.  No chance that Smith's songwriting  could fail me with subject matter like that :D.

i didn't mean it's a bad song. but even though i do care about the lyrics a great deal, i'm still primarily more music-oriented with my listening: meaning that first of all a song has to be good on purely musical grounds in order to be a really great song. in the case of 'jupiter crash'... i feel that if i had found the lyrics to be less thrilling/less exceptional, i wouldn't have considered it such an exceptional song. yet the lyrics kind of boost it up, they make it what it is.
i don't know if i manage to explain myself... what i am trying to say is that however great the lyrics were, i always have a feeling that there's something missing there whenever i notice that the music vs. lyrics balance flips too much that way round, in favor of the lyrics. if i notice that the music alone doesn't really affect me once the lyrics are removed, i am just not entirely.. let's say, captivated.

and that's not the same as to say that 'jupiter crash' is a bad song. just not one of the really balanced, great cure songs for me.
just my impression of course. :)

ps. i guess one could look that from another point of view and say that it's dangerous to write too good lyrics - because they then call for exceptionally good music too! so beware...
yet luckily, the cure manages to pull this a lot of times of course. and that's one of the things that set them ahead of most other groups of course. the songs have both great musical and great lyrical depth, even when observed independently from each other.

ps2. since this is starting to veer off from the original topic i'm getting prepared to split this topic, if necessary - why not make a thread of their own for 'jupiter' and other "space songs"? ;)

Again, I'll have to disagree with that  :P.  I think "Jupiter Crash" is both captivating AND evocative.  It's perfect the way it is.  A song that I hum and sing passages of to myself for hours afterwards is a great song in my book, jbabe  ;).  I think it excels at evoking a specific mood.  The title is a sly sort of bait-and-switch.  Not only does it have meaning for the event that the song's protagonist is observing, it also could be interpreted as referring to the crushing blow to the guy's ego as it dawns on him that his dear lover has f*ck all interest in something so special to him.  Nothing can be more cutting and devastating to a dude than to try to share something meaningful and personally important with a woman you care about, only to have her shrug and go "Meh.  Is that all there is?   What's the big deal?"  I'm sure it cuts both ways and that the ladies feel the same about certain things.  I think the song captures that melancholic mood-breaking feeling quite capably.

Do what you feel you have to do.  Not sure what the harm is in digressing a little here since this thread doesn't appear to be too much of a hot-button topic to begin with ;).  Keeps the conversation alive awhile longer at least.  Unstarch the collars a little and let things flow more freely :).  Let people have fun, within reason, of course.  You'll know when the time is right for moderating a given thread topic.

and there's actually another digressing option in the discussion you started : great lyrics versus poor music & vice versa.
or when the combination of both doesn't work (RS said that about snow in summer, a song i really like btw).
& i happen to like jupiter crash both lyrically & musically, too.
strangely, as much as i dislike wendy time on wish, i love the 5 imaginary boys & demo versions, but maybe the lyrics don't fit on these (well, they do, on a strictly melodic point of view). here i can understand why they would change the music so drastically, but then it's just a crappy song, where there was a great one.

my wife asked RS to play the hanging garden at Newcastle in 1992 on the wish tour warm up dates (said he'd try the figurehead instead)... it took us until RCMH 2008 to eventually hear HG live!... and was worth it, even with a bit of ad-lib (screwup?) at the end!

Hahahaha... yeah good question! And then you'd have to move on to all those other songs that really have no clear/particular meaning!

But then I've always wanted to know why Mr and Mrs Smith never had children! That would be my question. But I think to ask something like that may be a tad to personal, and really none of my business!

Well, Robert has said in interview that they didn't have kids because he felt he could never be a good father... He has also said that if Mary had really wanted kids then he would probably agree and go along with it (not his exacct words, but the meaning is this).

Well, having children is just the natural course of things. If this civilization was a healthy one and we as a species had a healthy relationship with each other and with our environment, then (almost) all of us would have have children and see it as the most natural and fulfilling thing to do...

yes i actually agree - IF this civilization was a healthy one. but since it's apparently not, i think questions like "why bring more people here to suffer, why bring more people here to strain and torture this planet even more than it's being strained now?" are actually quite valid. sadly. :?

(you see i'm not one of those people who hate kids for whatever reason, i'm simply disturbed to see how many people around me seem to have children simply because of some quite selfish reasons, so that the kids would make themselves feel somehow better. i'm a bit similarly disturbed as i am when i see people acknowledging the energy crisis that lies ahead due to the over-exploitation of natural resources but still not refusing to cut down their personal usage at all or refusing to start recycling simply because "it's tedious" and not "fun and easy".)

More generally, us men don't usually need you women to make important decisions. It's just that some decisions have to be made by the two together, as a couple...
Also many things we agree with we do it just for love. And love works against our better judgement, sometimes...  ;)

Something I would dearly love (and this is purely a voyeuristic type thing) is someone 'good' to sit down with Mrs Smith and interview her. I'd love to have her take on life with Robert, and how she handles it. To have her perspective on The Cure would be really fascinating to me. I would gladly put my hand up for that job... but then I've never interviewed anyone and I doubt I have the proper technique required! I often wonder what she gets up to while her hubby tours the world and is stuck in recording sessions etc... My fella was in a band for a time, and I found it really hard being on the edge so to speak. Your sort of part of it, but then not really!! I found it a little lonely at times, as his attention wasn't fully on me as I'd have liked. Selfish perhaps, but then I'm not in the habit of being in a relationship with someone to be separate from them!

Well, you know, that proximity / separation between Robert and Mary due to Cure recording sessions and touring has probably varied across the years. For instance, I think back in 1986 Mary and the other band members' girlfriends travelled together with The Cure, by train, for the whole tour. Also, there have been occasions where Mary (and the other girls too, I don't know how often this has happened, though) have attended recording sessions, sometimes for quite long periods of time, I believe: the KMKMKM sessions are one example of this, the band even went so far as have the girls vote for all the recorded songs in order to help them chose which ones would be included on the album...

You are being kind of nasty, aren't you?  ;) Murder is not a natural consequence of love. Having children is. Or trying to cut in some of your "selfish" hobbies time in order to have more time to be together with the one you love... Or something around those lines.

yes, but my point was that... i mean if pleasing someone we love is not necessarily always something good and noble just because it was done "just for love". perhaps i just don't think things are that simple. or perhaps i just don't fully believe in such unselfish love between people. between a parent and a child i actually believe in it but between lovers, i think there's always a bit of selfishness there too.
anyway, this is already veering off so heavily that let's leave it there. :-P

no, i was not trying to be deliberately nasty, no. sorry if it sounded like that. i might be sarcastic at times but that's another thing.
i was actually being completely serious of what i was saying. i just meant that there is love and there is "love" - and sometimes it can happen when people say they did something "just for love" that you actually find yourself totally confused because you realize that love for you means something totally different than what this other person just meant by it. aaah perhaps i don't know how to explain myself... i meant that a person can kill someone out of jealous love and be absolutely convinced that he/she did it "for love", even though most of us would say that was certianly not an act of love. but it might have been for him - so which of us would be right about the nature of the feeling called "love"? can we say this is love and this is not? because love can be a weird thing that can make perfectly sane(!) people do some really weird (insane) things. although murder was perhaps a bit too extreme example, i know. a bad choice from me i suppose.

anyway - more questions for our dear robert??   :-D

so which of us would be right about the nature of the feeling called "love"? can we say this is love and this is not? because love can be a weird thing that can make perfectly sane(!) people do some really weird (insane) things.

Love is a fire that burns unseen,
a wound that aches yet isn't felt,
an always discontent contentment,
a pain that rages without hurting,

a longing for nothing but to long,
a loneliness in the midst of people,
a never feeling pleased when pleased,
a passion that gains when lost in thought.

It's being enslaved of your own free will;
it's counting your defeat a victory;
it's staying loyal to your killer.

But if it's so self-contradictory,
how can Love, when Love chooses,
bring human hearts into sympathy?

(from XVIth century poet Luis de Camões, sonnet "Amor é fogo que arde sem se ver", translation by Richard Zenith)

He has also said that if Mary had really wanted kids then he would probably agree and go along with it
Mmm....this is an important decision that a couple should take together and not just to "make someone happy"... :?

Well, they did actually decide together not to have kids. It's just that in that interview Robert was being asked about the fact that they did not have children, so he did his best to explain the reason why. Anyway, I think one of the reasons he said what he said was just to express his love for Mary... This sort of confession has happened a few times along the years, even when there was nothing specific about the questions being addressed to him that would ask for such a love declaration, I guess it is just something he sometimes has felt the need to do.

Anyway, probably Mary wouldn't have accepted it if she knew that Robert's agreement was "just to make her happy"... I guess we'll never know about that. ( And well, we don't have to, because it is really none of our business.... ;) )

Hmm, the question I wanted to ask seems to have generated alot of chat in here! As I have no children of my own I really don't understand the NEED some people have to become parents - each to their own however! I did read somewhere that Mr Smith had said he prefers to be an Uncle and not a father... And also lets not forget that at times Mr Smith is less than honest in interviews! Things that are personal, as this question really is, should get a lie as a response. If I was talented enough to warrant media intrusion into my life, I would lie constantly in interviews! More to make myself 'seem' more interesting than I actually am, but also to throw people of the scent! I think it is far easier to lie about something than come across as all up yourself and 'private'... that can come across as a tad wanky!

Oh I just had a thought (da da da darrrr  :smth100)... I reckon the reason children never happened for them anyway is the fact that Mr Smith was always touring or recording. [I find it amazing to think about how prolific The Cure/Mr Smith were in the begining. Not like today where bands find they don't need to tour nonstop to be heard, just look ay myspace!] Doesn't leave a lot of time to consider becoming a parent now does it! And bugger, why would you want to when your flying (or LOL, sailing...) around the world meeting interesting people and seeing amazing things? An international jetsetters lifestyle doesn't really incorporate children!

Well, the following are kind of personal questions, so feel free not to answer them if you think they are too personal... Have you ever had children in your family that you were frequently with? Have you ever held a new born child of your blood in your arms? Have you ever loved anyone so profoundly that you felt sure you would want to spend the rest of your life with them? It is my guess that if you had, you would probably understand why people want to have children. But then again, as you say, each to their own.

It's true Robert has a reputation for lying in interviews and he himself has admitted that across the years he has lied just to make things more interesting or just to piss off the press. But I don't think this is the case here. I remember this particular interview with a woman journalist and they were going all kind of intimate (in a innocent way, mind you), I just can't believe that Robert was lying on this occasion...

Not always. I think in the 90's there were fair periods of time when The Cure activities were almost inexistent. It would have been possible to "squeeze" some children in there, so to speak. And anyway, most rock stars are almost always other touring or recording and that doesn't seem to prevent them from having kids.

when Robert was quite young he made the decision, and told his parents, that he wasn't going to have kids. Simple as that. and yes, he adores his nephews and nieces...as he does his whole family.

Yeah, that's a well known story, mentioned in the "Never Enough" biography, for instance. But I don't think it is very insightful to say "simple as that" because, well, as far as I remember, Robert was just about 12 years old then... He was not even a teenager! How can you take his words at that age seriously when the subject at matter is clearly one that only adults can truly understand?

I have Nephews and a Niece that I did spend alot of time with... Might be why I don't want kids of my own! LOL... They're heading into their teens now, and so they can be reasoned with! (sort of) BUT, I have never really liked people persay, and as a result I thought having my own child would bring me into closer contact with other people, ie; parents. Not desirable! I can understand the "Have you ever held a new born child of your blood in your arms?" bit... I think that would be a very DEEP thing! Just not for moi. And with the world the way it is.... BLAH - I'll get to depressed if I go much further!

Animals are more my thing!

I also had just thought of another good question, but lost it typing this out... bugger it!

well, I have never read the "well known story", so there ya go....just repeating what was said... not trying to be "insightful" at all, just passing on a conversation and not something out of a book...
he was 10 actually, round about...and maybe, just maybe, Robert being who he is had that thought and just stuck to it. * shrugging shoulders* he wasn't just your usual run of the mill kid you know...

Sounds weird but my question would be:

Can I give you a hug?

Can I give you all guys a big kiss

i might just ask to shake his hand. ;)
you see i'm from northern europe, i like to keep my distance, especially when i respect/admire someone. maybe it's the japanese side of me too. ;)

&this reminds me how i've never understood/felt comfortable with the french/southern european way of saying hello by giving a person kiss on both cheeks. it feels like a kind of forced intimacy, the way you're supposed to do it with even people you don't really know that well. always bothered me. anyway.

Could he give it to me, if it's just rotting in his garage ? :-D

I think that if I found my self in a situation where I reckon that RS really put any interest in me and willingly were ready to answering my question(s) with both wit and sincear I´d ask him to try and explain what the propellant has been for him during all these years. I mean the band has had its metamorfosis and the music is many a times a one man work. How has he been able to face all the differenties and still keep the development of the bands music to the rather forward stretch (atleast that´s my oppinion) that it has gone through. How has he managed to find and keep the bandmembers under a relatively skeletal crew under those circumstances. The Cure wasn´t that big a band in the beginning. There can´t have been that amount of money to show off with (or was there).

Well I guess I´d take it from there and see what kinda answers I get and then try and elongate my questions into something more like a conversation...
