It's happening! On cinemas worldwide from 11th July!

Quote from: undefinedAT 8PM ON SUNDAY 9TH JULY 1978 IN THE ROCKET, A SMALL SMOKEY PUB IN CRAWLEY SUSSEX, THE CURE PERFORMED THEIR VERY FIRST SHOW. AROUND 65 PEOPLE JOINED IN THE FUN.

AT 8PM ON SATURDAY 7TH JULY 2018 IN HYDE PARK, A BIG GREEN SPACE IN LONDON, THE CURE TOOK TO THE STAGE TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF PLAYING LIVE. AROUND 65,000 PEOPLE JOINED IN THE FUN.

TO CAPTURE THIS SECOND HISTORIC EVENT IN ALL ITS TECHNICOLOUR GLORY, THE BAND TURNED TO THE MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE CURE'S ICONIC VIDEOS, AS WELL AS THEIR AWARD WINNING 1986 FILM 'IN ORANGE' - LONG-TIME COLLABORATOR AND MAVERICK DIRECTOR TIM POPE.

THE PERFORMANCE TIM POPE FILMED THAT PERFECT SUMMER EVENING WAS ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE CONCERTS OF THE CURE'S LONG CAREER; AS GIANT SIZED SCREENS DANCED, GLITCHED AND FIZZLED WITH IMAGES OF RAGING SEAS, SHIMMERING WEBS AND BROKEN HEARTS, THE CURE FLOWED, FLOATED, PUSHED, POUNDED AND POWERED THEIR WAY THROUGH A 29 SONG 135 MINUTE SPECTACULAR, ON A SPELLBINDING TRIP THROUGH FOUR DECADES OF ALTERNATIVE POPULAR MUSIC.

SAYS POPE: "I WENT TO REHEARSALS IN A VERY CRAMPED STUDIO JUST THE DAY BEFORE THE SHOW, AND SAT IN THE GROUP'S MIDST AS THEY RAN THROUGH THE SONGS. I KNEW AS THE SET LIST UNFOLDED THAT THE ONLY WAY TO SHOW PEOPLE THE REAL CURE WAS TO CAPTURE NOT ONLY THE GRAND, EPIC DIMENSION OF THEIR STAGE SHOW, BUT ALSO THE CLOSE, INTIMATE SIDE OF THIS BAND SIMPLY MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER. NEVER HAS ROBERT SUNG SO WELL, NOR HAS THE CURE PLAYED MORE PASSIONATELY, MORE TIGHTLY, MORE POWERFULLY."

AS THE FILM WAS EDITED TOGETHER ACROSS THE ENSUING MONTHS, SMITH AND POPE WORKING CLOSELY TOGETHER, CURE FOH SOUND MAN PAUL CORKETT, WHO HAD MIXED THE SHOW LIVE ON THE NIGHT, WAS BROUGHT IN TO HELP ROBERT CREATE THE ACCOMPANYING SOUNDSCAPE. MIXING TOOK PLACE AT BRIGHTON ELECTRIC STUDIOS IN LATE 2018, FINAL TWEAKS TO THE THEATRICAL 5.1 AUDIO BEING CARRIED OUT AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS IN EARLY 2019. AS WITH THE 4K VISUALS POPE HAD SNARED WITH HIS CAMERAS, THE AIM WAS TO CREATE A TOTALLY IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR CINEMA-GOERS.

LOOKING BACK NEAR THE END OF THE SHOW, ROBERT SAYS TO THE AUDIENCE "IF YOU'D ASKED ME IN THE ROCKET WHAT I'D BE DOING IN 40 YEARS, I WOULD HAVE GOT THE ANSWER VERY WRONG... BUT IT'S THANKS TO EVERYONE AROUND ME, AND TO YOU ALL AS WELL THAT I'M STILL HERE... SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH! IT'S BEEN A GOOD FOUR DECADES... HERE'S TO THE NEXT ONE!"

IN MARCH 2019 SMITH AND THE REST OF THE CURE – SIMON GALLUP, JASON COOPER, ROGER O'DONNELL AND REEVES GABRELS - WERE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, ANNOUNCING EXCITING NEWS LATER THAT SAME NIGHT ABOUT THE PROGRESS OF THE GROUP'S FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN MORE THAN A DECADE.

"ANNIVERSARY 1978-2018" WAS AND IS THE CURE DRAWING A QUITE REMARKABLE LINE BETWEEN THEIR PAST AND THEIR FUTURE.

Anyone interested in joining me to the screening at NYC's Landmark 57 on July 11th?

We just moved to NJ, my husband is not particularly fond of the Cure, already joined me to the Hyde Park gig in London and I'd love to meet new people who share my passion :).

"Love Song" from Hyde Park is the "preview" for the film:

I looked and the film shows in a few cinemas not too far from my home, not just on July 11th, but also on a few other dates between then and July 28th, so I hope to make one of them.  :cool

Tim Pope interview (about "Anniversary"):

http://www.curzonblog.com/all-posts/interview-tim-pope-director-of-the-cure-anniversary

Quote from: undefinedMTV was starting up and spreading across the world and our videos became very well known with people literally waiting to see what we did next. I think [that] created a lot of The Cure's visual identity. Videos subsequently have become formulaic and boring, and our work let us cut free of convention, mainly as the rule book had yet to be written. I also directed the 1987 35mm film The Cure In Orange, which had a theatrical release and became a fan favourite, capturing the band just at the moment they hit the big time.

In many ways, our new film Anniversary is Orange 2 and I think, given my appearance in the director's chair, our audience will pick up on this. For its part, it draws a line in the sand between their old catalogue of songs and their upcoming album which Robert has just announced and is their first in over 10 years.

What do you hope fans will experience when they see Anniversary 1978-2018 in cinemas?

Pope: Well, I want the audience to feel like they are sat in the band's middle, like I did that day that I described earlier. It is an up close and personal experience. At moments we are super close to Robert's face, the next so wide the audience looks like ants. Given that so much of The Cure's music literally provided the soundtracks to people's lives I want our audience to come on the 40-year journey, too.

A funny moment tonight.. arrived at the cinema early. I stand near the entrance for a moment, unsure if I'm at the right door. A guy around 40-50y/o, who looks a little rough does similar, walks up to me and says I look as lost as him. I said "are you here for The Cure?" He replied "no, I'm seeing Pets"
😂 that was totally unexpected! A lesson to not read a book by its cover

I watched the film at an independent cinema called 'Lumiere' (http://www.kino-lumiere.sk/klient-863/kino-241/stranka-8409/film-327721) (means 'Light' in french) here in Bratislava. Ticket was 10 EUR and the hall was about 90% full. There were some familiar faces as I think most Curefans here in this small city know each other. I met @charlotte sometimes after very long time. A man did an introduction before the film, mentioned 'In Orange' and that Tim Pope is a long collaborator of the band, and he also mentioned other films they will pass in the upcoming months. This one was part of a series called 'Music & Film'.

It felt very nostalgic. Was watching this and so many memories came to my mind. Was thinking a lot about 'The Cure In Orange', difficult not to compare. I enjoyed the movie, I loved the sound (it was pretty amazing), and the video effects in psychedelic songs such as "If Only Tonight...". The highlights for me were that song, "Plainsong", "Disintegration" and "Push". The filming was beautiful and you could see how the band enjoyed playing that gig. Every word said by Robert between the songs was subtitled. I am glad I had the chance to be somewhere in the audience in that very hot summer day in London. Can't believe the time went so fast (first time I watched 'In Orange' was around 1993 and the 'Hyde Park' gig was already one year ago!)

I loved the close ups and Robert's classic gestures, Simon bouncing around the stage as always (much more than In Orange even thought he is 30 years older now), Reeves and his thoughtful way of playing, Roger and his proficiency in the keyboards and Jason... Hmmm.. although the drum's sound was pretty good (honestly, every instrument sounded perfect), he looked so stressed, like if he was counting the beat. Did anyone else had the same impression? I could be wrong, of course. But I couldn't help and compared him with Boris in 'Show' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ilCHNg1rPI), how relaxed yet powerful he played, or with Kiss's Erik Carr (watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDZggIp3t1s from 3:07 - 3:20 and how he kills it)

Anyway, they will pass the film again this Sunday and I am considering seeing it again for a second time :P

The Czech trailer (no, they do not speak Czech in Slovakia but Slovaks understand it pretty well)

I couldn't watch the film, only one day at 8pm, so i was still at work.
Any news about it releasing on BR/DVD or even download code? I really wish they allow to have a 4K download, along with a physical release,  for those that don't plan to buy a UHD BR player.

Three chances to see the film and all of them came and went... today it's impossible due to a jammed motorway and countryroads aren't the opportunity in that direction (plus some of them are flooded today).    :frowning:  :disappointed:

Thanks for the chart, @Ulrich.  It was interesting to see what else was charting.  Like for instance Cliff Richard.   :expressionless:   Which reminded us... anyone here watch The Goodies?  There was an episode where someone was kidnapping musicians.  They snatched Cliff Richard off the street in their car and then there's a pause, and the car comes back around again and drops him back off at the kerb.   :rofl

I hope I have not offended any Cliff Richard fans that might be present...

Since our local cinemas didn't come up with this film, it's nice that the DVD set has now been released.  Father Christmas apparently is getting this one for us.   :angel

Well, I've realised we have 2 topics, one about the movie (Hyde Park) and another about the dvd/blu release, but never mind... I'll post this in here, because the "Anniversary" Hyde Park disc was the one I watched first.

So I finally got round to catching up with those of you who were actually there! (At least a little bit...)
Made me think of you down there in this big crowd. (Yes, you!)  ;)

First of all: Tim Pope did a good job with this film (as you'd expect from him). :cool
My expectations weren't too high (to be honest), after all it's "only" a greatest hits kind of set at a huge outdoor location. But: I really enjoyed it a lot! It was good to hear these songs - one "trick" of me was to not look at the back of the dvd package, so I would be at least a little surprised about the setlist! And it worked too. :)

The "persona" Robert Smith puts across on stage is still impressive to me (as it was back in the day). The way he plays his guitar(s) and sings the songs - he even talks a bit (got to admit: I didn't understand it all, just as if I were there at the show...)!  :happy
The band did a great job of playing the songs, didn't they? Simon is the backbone with his bass playing (and the way he runs around the stage). Can't say anything bad about Jason's drumming - solid. Roger on keys is of course an asset to this band, as is "guitar hero" Reeves with his calming presence.
Only two songs didn't really "click" for me in this anniversary gig: Fascination Street & Never Enough. (Don't get me wrong, normally I like these two, but here something seemed to be missing... nothing too serious though...)

While watching, I had a few beers, which (I guess) made me enjoy it even more (don't try this at home, kids); thus it was a fun evening (best Monday night in a long time).  :cool

It was (is) a glorious celebration of a 40-year-long career. Glad to be able to watch this movie.

A mate phoned me to wish a happy new year etc., he informed that he saw The Cure @ Hyde Park yesterday on tv (3sat), however I asked about the length and he said "1 hour", i.e. they edited it.

I checked and it's available online until 14/2 (good for those who still haven't got the dvd/blu):
