Title: Best "rare" song
Post by: TheExplodingBoy on December 05, 2005, 06:33:05
I was wondering which of The Cure's unreleased/rare songs people like the best (sideprojects/remixes included) anything obscure really.
Personally I love Pirate Ships.  It's not like a lot of other Cure songs but I like the mellow feel and the sounds of waves and seagulls in the background.

I guess I'm digging "Perfect Blue Sky" right now, but "Old England" & "The Three Sisters" are pretty incredible as well.

I don't know where "Old England" & "The Three Sisters" come from.
Can you tell me more about those songs, please ?

The Lost Wishes is a limited edition EP which was released in the UK in 1992 and consisting of instrumental outtakes from the Wish sessions.  Uyea sound / cloudberry / off to sleep / and the three sisterse were the four songs.

I think my top five favorite oddities are probably All I have to do is kill her, The Hanging Garden Studio Demo, Cold Colours, Winter, and Off to sleep.

I really wonder why Robert abandoned ALL I HAVE TO DO IS KILL HER ...
It's such a great song with so much more space for imporovisation than FOREVER ...
And it runs 20+ minutes, so...

:?

Janko, I think the name "All I have to do is kill her" was created by the bootlegger. Its really just a more famous version of All Mine. All Mine and Forever are two different songs. You can tell in the beat of the song and the guitar notes. Though I must say, AIHTDIKH is a great version.  :D

I'd have to say Spiltmilk34 hit upon my favorite.  Perfect Blue Sky.  I was so close to naming my website after it but opted to go with "A Forest" based name.  Coming in close 2nd and 3rd would be The Loudest Sound demo and then the Resurrection mix of To The Sky.

Ron, "A Perfect Blue Sky" is just a fantastically melodic song, isn't it.  I love the little guitar bit right before the vocals.  I can't decide whether the song is happy or melancholy... I mean, I'm happy when I hear it, but the tone of the song is rather wistful... I dunno.  Glad you like it too.

Title: Re: Best "rare" song

perfect blue sky is not real cure song its collaboration with junkie xl that robert did himself only.
it has no "the cure" name on it but it only says junkie xl feat. robert smith. so his name only.
i don't think it is not such rare song too, quite easy to find today.

not completely bad song but not important after 2 listenings nothing new in it.
i think robert chose some strange collaborations then. like blink and so on, not so interesting. i would like to think he had more choices, lot of people probably would like it to work with him, but he choose bands like blink and some not so interesting dancemusic artists, like juniorjack (pretty awful). not bad that he did interest in something complete different than the cure and for instance do some electronic tracks but if he want to do electronic music/dancemusic i think there would be much much more itneresting artists and djs for this. i think he now only show he knows really nothing about that kind of music haha.
just my opinion of corse.

I have to say Spilt Milk. It is not released anywhere, is it? As far as i remember... Important absence in Join the Dots.
Sluvy - one of the wish sessions intrumentals - is a great song, too.

A Perfect Blue Sky is a good tune, but i cannot see it as a Cure song, as someone said before. It is dance musica... good dance music, i must say, but not something a can relate with our band, actually.

I use to love demos a lot! Is there a demo of Cut Here, with voice?

A Boy I Never Knew (  ;) )

Seriously, however...

The Three Sisters, definitely. Musically simple (minor chord, right?) yet ultra-driving bassline... Driving, but still with a dreamy nature to it...

Uhmm... the bonus discs for The Top and The Head on the Door (You Stayed, Sadacic, Lime Time, etc) are chock full of them...

And if b-sides count, The Exploding Boy, of course. The ultimate feel-good song, yet left off of THoTD, and only played live at a soundcheck (Turku 85) and a radio session... It's sinful.

I'd also like to hear Interstellar Overdrive (or was it Set The Controls... can't check... gotta run) that they soundchecked at Orange 86...

The actual song title is 'All Mine'.  However the famous version of this song you are referring to is know as 'All I Had To Do Is Kill Her' (due to a line Robert sings) performed in Paris 1982-06-07.  Another version of 'All Mine' in which Robert sings the line "All I had to do is kill her" took place in Dusseldorf 1982-05-20.  Unfortunately, the Dusseldorf recording is cut short and we don't get to hear 'All Mine' in its entirety  :(

Check dimeadozen.org and foreverdrowning.net/torrent for recordings of these concerts.

"I JUST NEED MYSELF"

I love it, it sounds like someone took the early ROLLING STONES and the BUZZCOCKS and smashed them together into one... such a catchy tune, I love Robert's young voice in it, and when he starts screaming, it's so not like him, but still him...

I also really like "PLASTIC PASSION" the demo version, it really rocks. I don't care how embarassed Robert is of it, I think it kicks ass. The lyrics are crude and meaningless, but I like that type of thing sometimes.

"HAPPY THE MAN" is a beautiful song, one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, it is really soothing and it glistens with this jungle-esque feel, I imagine a rainforest at night whenever I hear it, so serene and soft like the dead of night during a light rain. Mmmm.... :smth023

Yeah, even with the straightforward beat, it's still really kickass. Robert's different vocals make it seem like a totally different song, and the chorus is completely different, as well as the bridge to the chorus...

He also says "Eyes like Ice Don't Move", a line he says in Figurehead...so that's pretty interesting!

Sometimes I prefer the demos, because I like that raw, lo-fi sound and the drum machines. Also, the demo version of "PLASTIC PASSION" rocks like ten times harder than the album version... :smth023

I almost wet myself listening to "JAPANESE WHISPERS"...

It's filled with songs by The Cure I have never even heard of in my life...and they rock! I mean, it's a total  change for the band style-wise, and the songs are missing the iconic Simon Gallup basslines and Lol Tolhurst pounding, but they're fun poppy New Wave tracks nonetheless.

Is that a pretty rare album? I never have heard of those songs before (aside from LGTB, The Walk, and Lovecats)

And I thought that "The Dream" was only a demo! But it actually got released on an album...shucks, you learn something new about your favorite band every day, even when you think you knew it all...... :)

It was released in a few countries and had to be imported to others...

Japanese Whispers is a collection of singles (LGTB, The Walk and The Lovecats) together with their B-Sides.
You're right, it's very new wave and such a nice listen.
You can find them all on the Join The Dots B-Side collection plus more obviously. If you don't have this you must go and get it, it's full of Cure gems!

I especially enjoy Lament, Just One Kiss and The Dream.  :smth020

I always loved Too The Sky. I've heard it on the radio back in 1987. I wrote to the radio station including a tape and they really returned it with Too The Sky on it. That was a real rarity back then. Apart from that I like the "yellow" version of Primary. It much better, that Primary itself. Also the slow version of Killing An Arab is nice. And of course Forever

'This Twilight Garden' is one of the all time best Cure songs in general and a crime that it was not on Wish.  'The Big Hand' as well.  But 'Forever' and 'All Mine' are great songs too that probably would only sound good on stage, never in a studio.  What makes those versions so good is the guitar effect, improvisation of lyrics and to me, the echo delay on the guitar, bass, primal drumming and voice.  It just makes it sound more eerie and in a way "demented".  'It Used To Be Me' is my favorite song from the WMS era.  'Sadacic' is a good tune too.  Oh well, I listed too many  :smth023

Well, I vote for "Carnage Visors", if that counts as a rare song. It was previously only available on the "Faith" K7 and it became more widely available only with the "Faith" deluxe edition... Anyway, it´s not that I have listened to it that many times, this instrumental song is so utterly bleak that it makes the whole "Faith" album sound like party music in comparison...

Anyhow, apart from Spilt Milk, Pirate Ships and All Mine, as well as Join The Dots songs like This Twilight Garden, Waiting, To The Sky and many more, I do like Ariel. Hasn't been mentioned on this thread, very nice dreamlike, drifting-away quality to it. Too bad the only ( :?) recording available is kind of crummy.

no recording is the 'only' copy unless it's someone's master recording which the taper decided to keep completely uncirculated, and never made a copy. so if you're referring to 'ariel' from the kid jensen session '82, there are lots of version out there, sourced from different generation tapes. besides, it was an FM broadcast anyway.
of course i don't know what kind of source you have but there are some pretty crummy crap mp3 copies out there, no doubt about it.

on-topic: hard to answer this as i don't know what should qualify as "rare" here!

Lime Time (Head On The Door Deluxe) is so much fun and there are lyrics to Inbetween Days, Screw, and Six Different Ways scattered about, The demo version of A Few Hours After This is also awesome. I also love the 12" remix of Pictures of You, I actually like that version more than the album one. To the Sky is probably my favorite B-Side although thats a really tough decsion. Perfect Blue Sky is very nice too

I hope we'll get it on the remastered Bloodflowers, together with "Ching chang chong" which is a pretty interesting early version of "Spilt milk". There must be tons of rare stuff on the WMS and Bloodflowers Bonus disks.

I love "All I want to do is kill her" which I think is a version of"all mine".  I also like the long version of "Just one kiss" which is the flip side of "Lets go to bed" as a vinyl longplay.

don't know how rare it is but as my user name implies i really like it used to be me.  i also really like a foolish arrangement.  not sure how rare that one is either.

See the Children

Although that's really Easy Cure I still consider it to be The Cure.

"Ariel", "Dark Affair", are really good, and all those other unreleased Wish sessions... I have a playlist(s) on youtube if anyone wants to listen to all the demos and instrumentals I rounded up that where not released. I'm 'Lilian Beamish' on Youtube, I have three playlists! 'Unreleased The Cure', 'Robert Smith Solo Works' and 'Instrumentals'. Go check those songs out!!!

Talking about rare song, does anyone know or have heard any rumours as to whether there will be remastered deluxe versions of Wish and WMS?
