Isn't the problem the currency down in South America. Didnt Coldplay just get in a load of crap in Chile or somewhere because for them to charge a ticket price that pays their bills and justify the tour, they ended up having to charge like the equivalent of half a months salary for citizens down there. Kind of a damned if they do, damned if they dont thing. They either don't come and south america gets upset, or they do and have to charge a fortune to avoid loosing tons of money on that leg which gets everyone complaining about the ticket prices. Which countires does this happen in, ie if they charged you $50 US dollars, what does that equate to down there? Just asking as I myself am curious

The problem is the taxes. Countries like Peru and Chile charge a LOT of taxes to foreign artists.

To give you an idea:

Imagine The Cure ask 200 000 US$ per show, plus expenses (flight tickets, hotel, cathering, etc.)

If they would perform in Peru, the state would ask to the promoter for

-50% of what they spent for bringing The Cure (ie.: 50% of 200 0000 plus expenses)

-From the tickets, the state would ask
--15% as municipal taxes (taxes for the district)
--10% copyrights
--18% general taxes

So if the ticket cost US$50 then the state (talking about Peru) gets about 20US$, 30US$ remaining for the promoter (with this money he has to cover the band's fee plus expenses). That's why prices for concerts like this usually rank from 50US$ to 300US$ in counties like Peru, Chile and Colombia.

In Peru 50US$ is about 150 soles, which is about 33% of the minimun salary. I guess is a similar picture in the whole latinamerica.

This graphic shows the ticket prices for the past Roger Waters concert in southamerica (gives a good idea about how expensive a Cure ticket here would be)

(every dot is certain ticket price according the country)

The average ticket cost per country was

ARGENTINA: US$72.26 (51.61 euro)
CHILE: US$119.63 (85.45 euro)
COLOMBIA: US$130.36 (93.11 euro)
PERU: US$134.58 (96.12 euro)

But the shows is sold out, no !!!

For Roger Water Waters it was sold out in Buenos Aires (the first night). The rest of countries (Brazil, Chile) had an attendance of about 80% I would say (we're talking here about stadiums of 50 000 capacity).

In Peru and Colombia the attendance was lower, maybe around 60% (and the venues were smaller too, 20 000 capacity)

yes i think it's the other way round, euro is a stronger currency than US dollar:

ARGENTINA: US$72.26 = 95.103 euros
CHILE: US$119.63  = 84.457 euros
COLOMBIA: US$130.36 = 92.264 euros
PERU: US$134.58 = 95.103 euros

anyway that's some crazy-ass ticket prizes there!
at least i wouldn't be able to attend many gigs per year if it ever came to cost that much here too. :?

the biggest "one-band" audience (i mean, not counting festivals with multi-band bills) i've ever been to was appr. 70 000  and that was just entirely nuts - i couldn't even imagine numbers like that in a cure show!

The Cure would play in Morumbi Stadium (Sao Paulo) or River Plate Stadium (Buenos Aires). That's about 70 000 - 80 000 each one :smth023

well, south america is in a bad situation indeed.
BUT, THERES A LOT OF PEOPLE THERE THAT LOVE THE CURE AND ARE WILLING TO PAY ALMOST HALFA BASIC SALARY, IM SURE .
I REMEMBER AN INTERVIEW IN MEXICO, WELL ROBERT GETS BOTHERED BY A CUESTION BY A JOUNG LAD:   WHY, SHOULD A "MEXICAN FAN" BUY YOUR NEW CD, SPECIALLY WHEN IN THIS COUNTRY HE HAVE NOT "AA GOOD ECONOMIC SITUATION" ( REALLY RUDE VOICE)... I THINK IS NOT A MATTER OF MANY FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE THE MUSIC,,, ANYONE OF US WOULD SPEND A LOT ON A TICKET,,,
I MEAN THE OTHERE PEOPLE THERE, "NORMAL ONES,, THAT LOVE OTHER MUSIK,,, WONT PAY,,, THATS TRUE.
BUT HEY ,,
THE CURE IS GOING TO PLAY LATIN A MERICA, AT LEAST ARGENTINA, CHILE, BRAZIL, PERU AND ,,, WELL, IVE LOTS OF FRIENDS IN THESE COUNTRIES WILLING TO PAY FORTUNES....

IM A FORTUNE TELLER
AND I SAY THE CURE WILL FINALLY ROCK SOUTH AMERICA YEAH :-D

muse will play in helsinki tomorrow and as i was just checking a local internet auction site, i noticed that the general admission tickets are currently being auctioned with +/-100 euros ($140) at the moment... that's pretty nuts.
anyway this made me think of this thread, as i can't imagine what black market prices somewhere like in south america might be then?
or is it maybe that whereas the ticket prices are high, the artists also play such huge venues (like giant stadiums) that the black market ticket prices never really get to play such a huge role(?).

I have seen a long time ago a video tape of Rio in Brazil from a festival in 1996 before Wild Mood Swings.
In the middle of the show it's one of the most excited crowds I have seen in a Cure film :rocker
I think by the encores Robert is drunk

I think the 1996 Brazil festival I'm talking about also had the Smashing Pumpkins at the festival, at the time in about 1996 Robert said a lot of nice stuff about the band.

There was a short interview in the peruvian TV some minutes ago (the interview was donde during the band's appearance in MTV Latino) and Robert confirmed that they are going to southamerica in april next 2008. However, he didn't mention which countries would be included in the gig.
