I saw one doco ages ago about corn and how everything has some form of corn in it... mostly doco's depress me. Living in ignorance is kinda how I like to have it sometimes... I became a vegetarian due to a doco, 'nuff said really on that one!! I mean I think a lot of people should watch them and understand how the world is, but also knowing kinda makes me feel powerless as well... but yeah I'm a sucker for science-y type ones   :smth023

Lately I am watching 'Locked Up Abroad' which is an awesome documentary/television serie from National Geographic. This program features stories of people who have been arrested while traveling abroad, usually for trying to smuggle illegal drugs out of a country.

This is one of my favorites chapters:

The Money Trap: How the Banks Lure You Into Debt

A senior banking executive reveals how high street banks deliberately target their customers and push borrowing.

https://youtu.be/Fg4VhALXgwE

By the way, as someone who once worked in a bank I can confirm that borrowing money from them is very very bad idea. The only exception could be when you buy a house, but even in that case I would recommend you ask no more than 25% of the total price.

In general, try to stay away of banks like the plague!

When building a house, the usual recommendation is to build the "financing" of it on various "pillars": one part bank, another part your own savings, etc.

Ok, but where would I get money from, if I'd need it? From you (if I ask you nicely)?  :-D

Also, I think you can't put them all in the same "drawer". I am part of a "mutual bank", i.e. me and many other people form a "companionship" and (at least in theory) we "own" the bank. (Don't get all excited: my share is like 50 euro and I receive about 3 euro each year as a "result"...)

In Peru poor people make this to collect money

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peruvian_pollada

or you can also https://www.gofundme.com/

of course people would do this in extreme cases (e.g. someone suffering cancer and requires a treatment that cost lots of money). IMO borrowing money from the bank to for example buy a car or pay a trip is insane.

Quote from: dsanchez on December 04, 2018, 11:26:27IMO borrowing money from the bank to for example buy a car or pay a trip is insane.

Why? If you can expect to be able to pay it back? Interest rates are at an all-time low, you won't get it cheaper.

For myself: I had a slow summer business-wise. Still I have to pay monthly bills (e.g. health insurance, pension scheme, electricity, water etc). How can I keep this up without "borrowing" from the bank? Of course the easiest way is to just "overdraw the account", but you'll pay insane rates for doing this...
(And no, in Germany you won't be able to start any business without having a bank account.)

I think a bank is a better way than to borrow from the "mafia" or so, because they will break your legs if you won't pay back...

Also, being in debt is not the end of the world. Nowadays there are organisations (governmental or NGO) which can help you with these issues if you are "in too deep".  :cool

I would borrow from the bank only if it's REALLY important. E.g. if I need 10K to buy a 150K house, I will borrow those 10K to the bank. But I would never borrow for leisure.

See, you did not mention that at first!
Well I need my car for my job/business, so I paid a big amount as a first installment, then monthly rates.

As mentioned before, I think you can't throw all the banks into one "drawer", as e.g. the "little" ones which are "community banks", do not "target" customers in order to try to get them in debt.

If I'll need money for a trip to a Cure show 2019, I'll start a "gofundme", then you all can prove what "loyal fans" you are by helping other fans to go see the band!   :winking_tongue

While I agree that not each and every "bad" bank has to be "saved" by taxpayers, I want to say: if they hadn't done it (saving the banks) in 2008/09 we would have had BIG problems, i.e. if the big banks hadn't trusted each other any more: no money could've been exchanged any more, no goods would've been traded via lorries & train; we would've had to trade our goods against potatoes and wheat ('cause that's what grows round here) on the local market... :fearful:

There are lots of them all over Germany, see a list here:

If you wanna read (translate) this, here is an article about their advantages:

Quote

By the way, if you look for a house in Germany you can get one for even less than 10 000 EUR.
But only in isolated regions, of course. One of them is called Priegnitz (between Hamburg and Berlin).
Then you need a car, definitely.  ;)

...I know what u mean. My Scottish parents are not fans of Ms Thatcher.  By shutting down the ship building on the Clyde so many people lost their jobs, and in many families (including mine) it led to families needing to leave their homeland to find jobs elsewhere.

It's perhaps similar to the funeral for George Bush ...in my mind all I associate him with is war.  There would be so many others who gave more positive contributions to the world, yet unlikely to get such an extravagant send-off

Maybe you mistake him for his son? The "older" George Bush did start a war against Iraq, but at least it was "only" a reaction to their occupation of Kuwait (back in 1990/91). (Unlike the 2003 war, which was a reaction to Saddam Hussein thinking about dealing oil without using the dollar...)

As a president, he was one of the leaders who enabled the unification of the two German states. Not too bad.

Look, I'm no expert on this area, and perhaps I've been watching too many Michael Moore documentaries, but there really is something fishy that BOTH Bush presidents were involved in.  ...and I think it's still going on today and involving some of the US-Saudi arabia goings on.
Also...how about Halliburton and how going to war would be in their financial interests!?

I stand by my statement that George Bush in my mind relates to war. I still recall sitting watching the Gulf War on the news when I was about 10y/o, the first time I'd ever seen anything like this, in confusion why anyone would take part in such things.
...and then it seems he bestowed such values to his child

I find it all pretty hard as my values involve overcoming obstacles and challenges through compassion and understanding. ...But towards people like this I find it hard to do this
😡

About Germany, ok while he may have been US president when this was happening I really don't think it can rightly be attributed to him.
...my understanding is that there was growing frustration in East Germany, and it got to the point where people were pushing for freedom, it was gonna happen no matter what, it wouldn't be tolerated any longer. And let's not forget the role of the Bowie! 😝

Sorry for off-topic, this is turning into the history channel here!

For me, it is George W. Bush jr. who'll be remembered as the "war-monger". His dad wasn't the perfect US president, but much better than his offspring!!

Quote from: word_on_a_wing on December 07, 2018, 14:01:18
...I really don't think it can rightly be attributed to him.

Yes, he was president and yes, it can't be attributed only to him, but he was an important factor, as West Germany still had lots of US troops stationed here and the U.S.A. were the most important and powerful partner in the NATO.

Of course Mr Gorbatchov and many others were heavily involved too! Our country needed the support of these "partners" to be able to erase the "iron curtain".

Quote from: word_on_a_wing on December 07, 2018, 14:01:18
...my understanding is that there was growing frustration in East Germany, and it got to the point where people were pushing for freedom, it was gonna happen no matter what, it wouldn't be tolerated any longer.

That's right, something had to be done. The government of East Germany decided to allow "free travelling" (i.e. opening the borders and thus "destroying the wall"). This however did not lead automatically to a "unification" of the 2 states, this was the result of long negotiations with Gorbatchov, Bush & Co.
(Maggie T. was against it, Bush & co. somehow managed to persuade her.)

But, we may not forget, on June 17th 1953 Russian tanks put an end to a similar thing:
https://www.planet-wissen.de/geschichte/ddr/geteilte_stadt_berlin/pwiejunideraufstand100.html
A smilar thing happened in Prague in 1968.

Absolutely WOAW. She didn't care what she was doing and it's the same with May, so many families are struggling now and with no where to turn to. It's awful. Big Jezza finally brought up the UN rapporteurs findings in parliament and she just point blank refused to acknowledge it.

Watched this last night, a documentary about a film which was never made. Fascinating stuff still (the people he got on board: HR Giger, Moebius, Orson Welles and many more + the influence on other films...)!

I've watched the first episode of this and think it could be fantastic!

QuoteThe new series follows one of the world's most prolific yet unknown treasure hunters, Hamilton White and his long-time friend Carl Cookson, as they trace the origin of an amazing hoard of relics.

Until today, no major items belonging to the Knights Templar – the medieval Special Forces of Christendom, made famous by The Crusades – have ever been recovered.
The series follows Hamilton and Carl as they travel through Europe and to the Middle East, as they attempt to uncover the truth behind these remarkable finds.

I'm not currently watching this, but hope to do so in September:

https://collider.com/moonage-daydream-release-date-details-trailer-everything-we-know-so-far-david-bowie/

QuoteMoonage Daydream is billed as an "immersive, interactive, cinematic odyssey" to the musical legend. The documentary film follows Bowie's professional and personal life and how he brought it all together to create masterpieces every single time. From behind-the-scenes footage to his creative process, the film includes his music, shows, interviews, and more of the British rock star and music legend.

The documentary is set to release in theaters across the United States on September 16, 2022. Moonage Daydream is also expected to arrive for streaming on HBO Max (and air on HBO as well) sometime in the spring of 2023.

f you expect this film to be a biography of a sort, then you may be disappointed as this is not that at all, as the trailer reveals. In fact, the trailer gives you glimpses of what exactly to expect from this film, namely, how Bowie changed the course of music culture around the world, and how he challenged societal and gender norms, way before the world was ready to talk about it. The sound, light, and animation effects, as the trailer proves, look extraordinary and psychedelic enough to put you in a trance and make you feel you are right there.

Written, directed, and produced by Brett Morgen and co-produced by Andrew Murray, Moonage Daydream will give you the best insight you have ever had into the mind that made David Bowie as we know him.

Morgen worked on Moonage Daydream for five years to bring together the rock star's 54 years of legacy into one holistic, two-hour film.

Tony Visconti serves as a music producer for the film. Visconti is an American record producer, musician, and singer, who had the longest association with Bowie, from the production and arrangement of the 1968 single, "In the Heat of the Morning" to his final album, Blackstar, in 2016. Visconti also occasionally performed on many albums of Bowie.

Been watching a repeat of this on "Kabel 1 Doku" and it's as fascinating as it was first time round!

P-47 Thunderbolt Upscaled Documentary (48:48)

I thought I knew everything about the "Jug" but seeing them take off from aircraft carriers in the Pacific really surprised me. Worth seeing... not the usual endless shooting around.  :smth023

More impressive than some Hollywood productions. The ending inspired me to listen to Nirvana's Come As You Are.

Deutsche Bahn: is it really that difficult to be on time? | ZDF zoom

We can't compare ourselves to Switzerland?! If we did, we would indeed have to hide. We're just pretending to reinvent the wheel. :1f633:  Learning from Swiss Railways means becoming more humble instead of greed and megalomania; thinking instead of ideological re-education/paternalism. Last but not least, it means respect for the customer, rather than disapproval of those who don't own a car.

This is what the future of high-speed rail in Europe will (hopefully) look like! | Railway in Ö D CH

After my experience with the NJ401/402 last year, there is still a long way to go before you can actually say that you saved a night in a hotel. The travelers in second carriage class are almost to be pitied and for first carriage class I would want to go back to the classic 6 compartment. That means dimmable lights, heating and ventilation that can be controlled separately, curtains for more privacy, and upholstered seats that can be adjusted to allow a reclining position. I would be willing to pay more for this convenience. For the summer I could imagine a connection between Berlin and St. Petersburg, but that presupposes a peace with Kiev. And another comment on flying: I don't want airplanes to disappear completely at some point. On the other hand, if you drive your motorhome to Scandinavia or the Iberian Peninsula, you may do even more damage to the environment. So the DB has to offer its customers something, otherwise they will stay away.

Quote from: WikipediaOperation Varsity (24 March 1945) was a successful airborne forces operation launched by Allied troops that took place toward the end of World War II. Involving more than 16,000 paratroopers and several thousand aircraft, it was the largest airborne operation in history to be conducted on a single day and in one location.

🔥Inferno aboard the USS Forrestal - NG Germany

There are already older documentaries, but this German-language one is still fresh on yt. When there are many refueled and ammunition-loaded aircraft on deck, this is a critical moment. What would have happened if the six A4 Skyhawks hadn't been there? The rocket would have flown out to sea. As a pilot, I would have had a queasy feeling walking around my machine when the weapons/missiles were already unlocked. The fact that the carrier only narrowly escaped sinking by itself has to be attributed to the crew. Respect.

Death Trap Haute Route – Reconstruction of a Drama | DOK | SRF

Exciting documentary of a tragedy that has not yet been conclusively clarified. Mario knew that his group was too big for him alone. Theoretically, two groups with seven participants each could have been formed by the morning of April 28th at the latest. There were some concerns about the upcoming weather, but only one participant was willing to talk to Mario about it, albeit in private. In this case, the mountain guide explained that he would turn back(!). We can no longer ask him or his partner. The fact that a reservation in a mountain hut expires without particularly noticing it may be true for 'fair weather', but not for weather where it is advisable not to go out the door. Especially since the sentence "These are not my customers." was expressed or did the first group assume that the other fourteen would take a day off? What speaks against it? So there is certainly still a need for clarification.

Schade, daß Beton nicht brennt (Kreuzberg Doku 1981)  :smth023

Quote from: WikipediaAlong with Neukölln, Friedrichshain, Gesundbrunnen and Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg is one of the very densely populated districts of Berlin. This is explained by the building principle of the greatest possible building density with a front building, side wings and adjoining - up to four - rear buildings, which has been followed since the Wilhelminian era. Even today, up to 150 tenants live in these buildings in houses that have an eaves height of 22 meters. Due to frequent changes of tenants, the oddity has now arisen that sometimes less rent is paid for the long-term apartments in the front building than for the apartments in the back building.[1]

Fascinating documentary (sorry, no idea about an English version): it's all in there from King Arthur to Siegfried the dragonslayer, from archeology to medieaval writings...

https://www.arte.tv/de/videos/107794-000-A/der-drachenritter-einer-legende-auf-der-spur/
