It's very simple:

1) First download the Winamp player from http://www.winamp.com/ (if you have this program already installed in your PC skip to step 2)

2) Download the FLAC plug-in for Winamp, and install it. Download it from here

http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=143614

If you have problems during the install let us know  :smth023

for  MAC users

you can play  flac files directly on the Roxio´s Toast sofware or with MACamp lite available for free on this URL:

http://www.macamplite.com/

with this you can play mp3, flacs , ogg, aiff, without a problem. runs perfectly on OS X 10.4.7

I know this is an old topic, I'm sorry, but I am having problems.  I am new to the idea of the flac file so I downloaded Winamp and the plugin.  I went to the Preferences section and selected the option to accept the flac file.   When I try to play a flac file, all that happens is the name scrolls in the window and when I press the play button--nothing happens. :(

I think for the last version of Winamp (5.35) you don't even need the plug-in. Download  it here

http://www.winamp.com/player/free

However, regarding your problem, you just need to install (execute) the plug-in. When you do this, you will install the proper files in C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\

Later, when you open Winamp you should be able to listen FLAC files.  :smth023

Thank you for the link, but I do have version 5.35 and the files still won't play.  I'm just gonna remove Winamp and stick to mp3s.  Atleast I know those work.

I don't think I can help here. I'm still using Winamp 2.95. As far as I'm concerned, that was the best version ever released!

You can find it here, as well as all sorts of other "vintage" programs:

http://www.oldversion.com

I'd say it's a worthwhile downgrade. ;)

Thanks for the link, but there is a problem with it.   When I go to that download site I click on the Version 2.95 link and then all of my windows close and nothing downloads.

Matti

Try typing http://download.oldversion.com/winamp295.exe into Your adress bar (or just klick the link here) - does that work?

Thanks for the help everyone, but it still won't play.  I'm sticking to good old reliable mp3s!

Have you already installed this?

http://www.imaginary-lemurs.com/flac-1.1.4a.exe

Seriously, installing this should do everything. You can't just magically tell Winamp to play FLAC â€" there needs to be a codec already installed.

I've done everything and nothing works. f*ck it. It's not worth it. :smth011

by the way is winamp the only flac player available for windows? :?:
i really don't know since i'm not on pc.

anyway, sorry to hear about such problems - sounds strange. and i don't want to sound like a smartass but if something's not worth they are the mp3s. :smth011
so, much better option than sticking to those is to encode your flacs to .wav once you've downloaded them and then play/burn those. i can't imagine that wouldn't work. so there's no point/reason to discard flacs altogether.

No, definitely not. If you install the codec, pretty much any media player will play FLAC. But Winamp is the best audio player that I've ever found.

I'll even admit that Windows Media Player is a joke for audio stuff.

@iwannashagsimon: I'm convinced that something is wrong with your computer! :(
