Title: "Let's go for a walk" - A tribute to The Cure (April Fools joke)
Post by: Ulrich on April 01, 2021, 09:53:58
The next Cure album will probably not be coming before 2022, but in the meantime the record company plans to release a "tribute album" with some of the most famous musicians ever covering Cure songs! (Some of the participants are dead, so they must've recorded their versions longer ago...)
Release date (tentative) of "Let's go for a walk - A tribute to The Cure" is set for Sept 31st, 2021, the tracklist will go something like this (they're still waiting for contributions by Billy Idol and Guns N'Roses):

Pink Floyd - Plainsong
Lady Gaga - Just Say Yes
Pet Shop Boys - The Walk
Calexico - The 13th
Rammstein - Us Or Them
Metallica - Boys don't cry
Lou Reed - Primary
Cat Stevens - Friday I'm In Love
U2 - A Forest
Depeche Mode - Close to me
Oasis - Mint Car
Motörhead - Three Imaginary Boys
Bob Dylan - There is no if...
Johnny Cash - Faith

G'day, @Ulrich! Are you hunching about 2022, or do you have evidence?  ...or is this reverse psychology?  :)

I think this one I'm going to get piecemeal as downloads, if they make it available like that.  I'm only interested in tracks 1, 6, 7, 9, 13 and 14...

It's a shame the Yeah Yeah Yeahs aren't doing something on this because that would have been really interesting.  And Brett if he was allowed to make a wish would choose an acoustic version of whatever Suzanne Vega wanted to cover.  He's also complaining that few people are going particularly deep with their choices... Bob Dylan chose the most obscure song from the perspective of the general public in that list, and it's one of my personal favourites...

I hope Melting Man will be around to analyse your choice of numbers! :beaming-face

Yes, our musical tastes are so different that this would be really interesting!  ;)

PS:  I hope your ears aren't burning, @MeltingMan!  :)  And that you're having a good slide down into Easter.  (Are you still eating Easter eggs? I'm doing an informal survey...)

Hm, I guess I have to admit it now: it was little me who made all those "choices". Seeing April 1st will soon be ending in Australia, I will have to make clear now: it's all just an April Fool's joke! (Well in the USA & Canada, the day has just begun, see I'm walking on a thin line here...)

(P.S.: Please note I will move this topic soonish, so it won't be here in "news" for long.)

Hahaha!  I'd never have expected that kind of stunt from you!  :winking_tongue

How long did it take you to confect that list?

And why didn't you put Mike Scott in it?

PS:  Brett says he hopes you choke on your Brezen!  :P

Ha ha, I'm glad I got you with it.  :winking_tongue
(For a while I thought "it might be too obvious".)

Nice list you put together, in the same "spirit".  :smth023

Well my first thought about it was last week, but I only had a few rough "ideas" about the artists/covers, then I made up the whole list this morning, it went quite fast!

(I could've put Mike Scott in, plus Mogwai, Placebo and all the "usual suspects", however I wanted to go a little "over the top" with the list.)

After having eaten my old hat just before Xmas, nothing can shock me any more!  XD

I had you categorised as "solid citizen" and that was incompatible with the notion of you doing an April Fools joke.  😜

Bwahahaha!

OK, so spill:  What other tricks have you successfully played on people?  :angel

And since I'm asking you:  I've never specifically done an April Fool's gag; but I used to have this wonderful fake Huntsman spider that looked SO realistic - very like the real thing:

These things are at least the size of your palm and HAIRY (not that it should logically make a difference, but apparently it does...).  Nicely grown specimens are the size of a human hand, so the above picture (at least on my desktop screen) looks about right.  They also tend to appear rapidly and move quickly.  Huntsmen are ambush spiders who like to live in or around human-made buildings, and although they can apparently inflict a painful bite, it's rare and they're not particularly poisonous...unlike some of our other, less impressive-looking spiders.

Anyway, I had a fabulous fake Huntsman with a magnet so you could attach it to curtains etc.  However, my favourite thing was to place it into the coffee cup of a succession of colleagues through the years who had all been carefully chosen (selection criteria included poetic justice) with the front feet just peeping up over the brim of the cup, and then replace it on the shelf for morning teatime...

Highly effective.  The last person I pranked with it kept it and said it was only fair, and I agreed.  :)

By the way, I used to keep the thing in my top desk drawer and frequently I'd scare myself accidentally when opening the drawer without thinking.   :beaming-face

PS:  I might make up some more suggestions for your imaginary CD at a later stage!   :cool

Well I made the odd post on a forum here and there (in a similar style), but I don't remember details. (Often I did nothing at all, depending on lack of time & ideas.)

Yes, but what about real-life situations?  ...have you done any practical pranks, perhaps in the pursuit of poetic justice?

I'm going to tell you about some odious men who apparently aren't properly house-trained, nor empathetic to other people's needs.  Men you may share the house with who leave the toilet seat (and lid) up instead of putting both down after finishing with the toilet.  Not closing the lid before flushing is actually really unhygienic if you have a flushing toilet - the resulting aerosols have been shown to deposit even on toothbrushes if the toilet is in an actual bathroom (and if you've got a compost toilet, then the lid needs to be closed after use so that the fan can continue to effectively create the negative pressure that stops the system from being smelly, and so insects don't fly down the toilet to breed).  Not putting the seat down, by itself, is lack of courtesy to other users of the toilet, particularly female users, who don't use toilets standing up and shouldn't have to be putting the seat down after someone else has left it up.

Now my husband was properly house-trained when I met him despite growing up in a male-majority household - always puts down lid and seat after use - and doesn't leave streaks, or miss the loo when using it upright so that there's never anything sprayed around the toilet or running down the front of it (both of which you can commonly observe on unisex public toilets, or if you're house-sharing with male slobs, or visiting a household containing such individuals 🤢).

But my first boyfriend wasn't properly house-trained, and didn't care about hygienic and considerate toilet use when sharing with others, and being asked nicely didn't have any effect on him, not once we were actually in a house-sharing arrangement (funny isn't it; it's so much easier to get the cooperation of others when you can choose not to invite them back, as when you happen to belong to the same household).  He, like some subsequent males in house-shares, used to argue that he liked "his" house messy and not having to care about stuff, after all it was "his" home, and if others sharing the space wanted it clean, they could choose to clean it.  (Don't get me started!)

Once in the middle of night when I was a university student and sharing with this particular male, I staggered semi-comatose to the toilet, without turning any lights on because I'm generally photophobic in the middle of the night and also because I don't want to wake up fully because otherwise I have trouble getting back to sleep.  When I got to the toilet, I sat down.

And disappeared into the toilet.  It was winter, so the ceramic was really cold and clammy on the rudely shocked skin of my posterior, which was wedged in the bowl, and my stomach was turning because this was not a toilet that was constantly clean like when I'm not sharing, or sharing with a house-trained individual like my lovely husband.  I was rapidly fully awake and having to extricate myself from a really unpleasant situation.  And then I had to shower in the middle of the night because how can you go back to bed when your skin has been all over an unhygienic person's skid marks and urine spray. 🤮

The person responsible for leaving the toilet in this state and turning it into a trap laughed and laughed when he heard what had happened.  It was soooooooo funny, apparently.  I was really miffed and repeated my requests for leaving the toilet clean and with the seat and lid down after use.  But this person didn't even pretend he was going to cooperate - he wasn't going "to be made uncomfortable in his own home by a clean freak."

Needless to say he never cleaned the toilet, and I had to clean it more frequently than I would have had to not sharing.  And soon after this incident, I was once again cleaning the toilet this person always soiled and never cleaned, and was really riled about it, when he was coming home from university.  And suddenly I had a wonderful flash of divine inspiration, and began to laugh.

He came to see why I was laughing, and I said to him, "I've got a surprise for you, but you've got to put your head down the toilet."  The toilet was pristine after cleaning, it must be said.  I continued to laugh and repeat that he needed to put his head down the toilet so I could show him my surprise.  And to my astonishment, he actually did put his head down the toilet...

...and I flushed.   :beaming-face  :angel   :winking_tongue

And then it was his turn to have a shower.

Sometimes the universe positions you to be the avenging angel, and it is very sweet.   :smth023

Hm, I can't really remember any. (Schoolboyish things like pushpins on a chair weren't my thing.)

Thumb tacks on chairs weren't my style either, it injures people...

But, did you never play tricks on people with that stuff called Slime that came out when we were kids?

(https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Flistverse.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2008%2F03%2Fslimedroolgreen-tm.jpg&f=1&nofb=1)

I actually got my Grade 1/2 teacher to hold her hands out with her eyes closed as a dare, and put Slime in them, telling her as it landed, "It's a frog!"  She looked suitably horrified, but I bet you anything she put that on as a show for our class!  ♥

Yeah, that's gross.   :1f635:

I had a "nail through finger" gadget.  Nowadays they do them like this:

...which is pretty obviously fake, because who bandages a finger when the nail is still in it, plus clearly you'd have trouble doing so even if you punctured the bandage.  My one was just a semi-ring connecting two "nail ends" with red paint where they met the semi-ring (which you'd wear on the opposite side to what you showed others).
