Title: FIBA 2010 at Curefans.com
Post by: lostflower4 on August 26, 2010, 08:28:43
Well, the time is almost here for the FIBA 2010 World Basketball Championship in Turkey — the most important international sporting event of the year.  ;)

Everyone is raving on about how great Spain, the 2006 World Champions, are. But I still think Team USA, who won the 2008 Olympics (and beat Spain twice in the process) — and also won a pretty serious exhibition game against Spain a few days ago — is still a better team. Granted not a single American from the 2008 Olympic team is playing this year and the current team doesn't have the "superstar" status of the previous one, I still think the USA can pull it off.   :smth023

And why not make a little contest about this?  :D  Pick the top 4 finishers, and the winner will receive a promo copy of the "High" CD single and a brand new copy of the "Limited Edition Picture Disc Interview." More info here:

My picks:

1) USA
2) Spain
3) Argentina
4) Lithuania

Need to do a little research before committing to a final four, but Team USA will prevail in the end.

Pretty crazy that France knocked off Spain just like that!  It's not the elimination round yet, but this will make their road to the championship game more difficult. Otherwise, no really surprising results today. But it seems Angola hasn't improved one bit in almost 20 years:

No doubt the Dream Team was the greatest basketball team ever assembled, but geez...

There's no stopping Kevin Durant  :rocker

I must admit I'm still bitter when I hear that name.   You see I'm a Portland fan even though I live in Seattle.  Portland foolishly passed him up a few years back and took center Greg Oden, who has been nothing but a bust due to numerous injuries.  Then, the Sonics, Durant's team, move to Oklahoma City.  I relied on having a team here in Seattle so I could take in a few Blazer games a year.  However, I do feel great joy in seeing KD lead Team USA to a win over Slovenia.  What an offensive force  :!:

Yeah, that's pretty tragic that you might have to drive 2-some hours to see your favorite team play now. The last NBA game I attended was Bucks vs. Nuggets, Denver 1991 (think, Dikembe Mutombo).

USA vs. Brazil today. Will this be more of a challenge?  Something tells me Team USA is way better than everyone was giving them credit for, so maybe not...  :?:

I caught the second half of the USA/Iran game today. Not sure if that was worth my time or not.   Team USA's next game against Tunisia is completely meaningless as they've already won their group, but I imagine it will be another slaughter. Only thing about that is when you have so many wins in a row you have to worry when that's gonna change — and the elimination round is just around the corner...

Will the USA really be facing Angola for this?  At the moment it's looking like it as Germany blew their chance. What a crazy year!

P.S.  Is anyone else surprised that Jordan keeps losing?  I guess he's getting old, and taking teams on teams all by himself must be quite the task.  :-D

The USA's first elimination round game is today against Angola. One thing I like about sports is that usually anyone can win on a given day, but Angola doesn't have a chance in hell. The only reason they got this far is because they played in a weak group. But I would assume it will be a more competitive game than the one I mentioned above.

After this will be some real challenges, with teams like Lithuania, Argentina, and Brazil looming. And on the other side of the bracket is Serbia, who looks to be a formidable opponent for anyone.

Turkey is also undefeated so far. Not sure if it's just the home court advantage or what.

FIBA Bans Vuvuzela from 2010 Basketball World Championship

ISTANBUL/GENEVA (FIBA World Championship) – FIBA has announced that it is to ban the vuvuzela from the forthcoming basketball World Championship in Turkey because of health concerns.

The sport's international governing body is urging fans not to bring the controversial instruments to games and warned that security staff will confiscate them. Supporters also face expulsion from the tournament's five venues if they flout the ban.
FIBA is the first international sport federation to officially ban the vuvuzela from all of its events. The ban will also include pressure horns that can produce similar decibel levels and harm people's health.

The noise made by the horns was a major talking point at the football World Cup in South Africa with opinion divided over the effect they had on the atmosphere during games.

Patrick Baumann, the Secretary-General of FIBA and a member of the International Olympic Committee, said: "We want fans to enjoy themselves and make lots of noise but not at the risk of spoiling it for others.

"The vuvuzela is simply not appropriate in a confined space such as a basketball arena. It's a very loud instrument and some medical experts believe the decibel level and frequency can be harmful to hearing.

"Besides our responsibility to protect the well-being of our athletes and fans alike, the sound level in an indoor sport arena could create communication problems between the referees and that could have a direct negative impact on the game.

"We are urging fans not to bring the instrument to stadia because they will be confiscated by security staff and anybody who manages to smuggle one into a venue might end up missing the game.

"Previous tournaments have shown us that it's possible to have a carnival atmosphere and passionate support without the vuvuzela."
The ban will also be implemented for all other FIBA indoor events in the future such as the FIBA World Championship for Women later in the year.

Dr Heinz Gunter, Vice President of the FIBA Medical Commission, backed the decision saying: "If somebody is sitting next to more than one vuvuzela it can cause damage to the ear. The problem is the instrument has a very high frequency which is not good for the ears."

Mr Nicholas Eynon-Lewis, a consultant ENT surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, also said: "The vuvuzela can produce sound pressure levels of up to 120 decibels. There is evidence that if spectators are exposed to this level of noise for more than a short period of time, they could suffer permanent damage to their hearing"

The 2010 FIBA World Championship will be the world's biggest-ever basketball competition and feature superstars such as Kevin Durant, Marc Gasol and Jianlin Yi.

Around 350,000 people are expected to attend the event in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Kayseri from August 28 to September 12 with more than one billion viewers watching the action on TV
or online.

The tournament will feature 24 teams, including reigning world champions Spain and 2008 Olympic gold medalists USA, with 288 players competing in 80 games. Two new venues have been built especially for the finals.

Seven different teams have been crowned World Champions. Leading the medal table are the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and the USA, all having won the Championship three times. Spain are defending the title they won in Japan in 2006, while Argentina are currently the world's best ranked basketball nation.

The team winning the 2010 FIBA World Championship will qualify automatically for the London 2012 Olympics.

FIBA Bans Vuvuzela from 2010 Basketball World Championship

for the EURO 2012 and the qualification they banned it, thank god!!! i hate that noise.

since germany was pretty bad i really hope the U.S. will thump whatever opponents they'll have to face!!!!  :smth023

Germany would not have sucked so bad if

was playing.  ;)

And so there were eight:

8 September 2010

Serbia (5-1) vs. Spain (4-2)
Slovenia (5-1) vs. Turkey (6-0)

9 September 2010

USA (6-0) vs. Russia (5-1)
Lithuania (6-0) vs. Argentina (4-2)

The winners of groups with the same color will play each other in the semifinals.

Wednesday, September 8 results:

Serbia 92, Spain 89
Turkey 95, Slovenia 68

Spain has been dethroned!

They can no longer be called "world champions," which annoyed me for the last couple of years because in my book (not that it matters much), I think that title should be passed on to whoever wins the following Olympics — especially when the "world champions" lose to that team twice in that tournament.

Turkey continues to roll...  Will it be Serbia who finally stops the hometown heroes?  :?:

Thursday, September 9 results:

USA 89, Russia 79
Lithuania 104, Argentina 85

Lithuania blows out #1 ranked Argentina. Well, I thought it would be closer than that, but I suspected Lithuania was the better team.

And now the Final Four has been determined:

11 September 2010:

USA (7-0) vs. Lithuania (7-0)
Serbia (6-1) vs. Turkey (7-0)

The winning teams of those games will advance to the gold medal game; the losers to the bronze medal game.

However, there are also "classification games" that will sort out the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th place finishes. Personally, I find these games a bit pointless as the teams have already lost and are essentially fighting it out to be the "least losers."

10 September 2010:

Spain (5-2) vs. Slovenia (4-3)
Argentina (5-2) vs. Russia (4-3)

The 9th+ place teams have already been determined by a special formula used by FIBA:

  9. Brazil (3-3)
10. Australia (3-3)
11. Greece (3-3)
12. New Zealand (3-3)
13. France (3-3)
14. Croatia (2-4)
15. Angola (2-4)
16. China (1-5)

Did not advance beyond pool play:

17. Germany (2-3)
17. Puerto Rico (1-4)
17. Iran (1-4)
17. Lebanon (1-4)
21. Côte d'Ivoire (1-4)
21. Canada (0-5)
21. Jordan (0-5)
21. Tunisia (0-5)

Saturday, September 11 results:

Russia 83, Slovenia 78

This means that Russia secures 7th place, and Slovenia 8th.

Next game today is USA vs. Lithuania, which may pit the two strongest teams of the tournament against each other. I think whoever wins this game will go on to win the gold medal.  :!:

What a day!

Saturday, September 11 results (cont'd):

USA 89, Lithuania 74
Turkey 83, Serbia 82

USA powers past Lithuania, and Turkey knocks off Serbia. The latter was a great game, and I'm glad I decided to watch it. I ended up rooting for Turkey, as they were the underdogs and had the rare chance to host the championship game in their own country. It didn't look like they were going to pull it off either since they were behind virtually all of the game. But with only 4 minutes left, they finally took control. And after some nervewracking back-and-forth action, they managed to take the lead at the very end.

I honestly think Serbia was the better team overall, but they slipped up at the end. So yes, Turkey will have a HUGE home court advantage against the USA, but I don't think it will be enough. The only way they can win is if the Americans have a really off day.

12 September 2010:

"5th place game"

Spain (6-2) vs. Argentina (6-2), 15:00 GMT

Bronze Medal Game

Serbia (6-2) vs. Lithuania (7-1), 19:00 GMT

Gold Medal Game

Turkey (8-0) vs. USA (8-0), 21:30 GMT

Sunday is also a government referendum day in Turkey, so everybody will have the day off. Chances are television viewership of the game will be especially high and will draw a new audience that is generally accustomed to things like soccer... It will be a huge day for Turkey basketball, but again, I don't see them winning. Yet if they do manage to somehow pull it off, I'll have absolutely no hard feelings against them. They really surprised everyone this tournament. I don't think anyone imagined them being in this position!

No kidding. That dude's got a bright future.

As for the contest, my predictions were the closest to being correct... But as staff members are not eligible to receive prizes, electric_glare officially wins. I'll be getting in contact with him/her soon.
