Example nr. 9

Hailing from England, the Tindersticks at their prime were simply some of the best song-writers of the 90's. They were not exactly an innovative or groundbreaking band, but their music has a timeless quality that will ensure them a place in rock history. Their romantic take on rock embraces influences such as those of chamber / orchestral music and easy-listening / lounge music, with a great sense of atmosphere and a feeling for building emotion almost effortlessly. Sometimes one is reminded of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at their most song-oriented, but the truth is that from their range of influences the Tindersticks have managed to carve a sound that is really their own.

Best albums: the first two (both simply called "Tindersticks"), from 1993 and 1995, respectively. Followed by "Curtains" (1997).

Musical examples:

"Jism" (from the 1st album)

#10: Manic Street Preachers

Since their first releases in 1989 the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers have been quite opinionated and controversial. Never ones to shy away from making a statement, even if its an unpopular one. But they never let it get in the way of making great songs. Weather you agree with their radical viewpoints you have to admire a group that always speaks their minds but never lets it compromise their musical vision. Most modern punk bands should take note.

Best Albums: Generation Terrorists (1992), The Holy Bible (1994), This is My Truth, Tell Me Yours (1998)

fiction

I had to say David Eugene Edwards here. An american singer/songwriter from Denver, CO. Deeply into religously christian myths his biggest projects, Sixteen Horsepower (put to a much too early grave thanxs to DEE´s religously parannoia) and Woven Hands really makes a different in the heavy dark modern sort of americana.

A great album to contemplate to is "Sackloth `n` Ashes" (SHP)

Another great album with SHP to zip booze to is "Secret South"

Other related projects: Lilium and Denver Gentlemen
