Title: why black? (fashion tips for the summer)
Post by: japanesebaby on June 14, 2008, 13:22:35
i was thinking the other day: when did we last time see mr. smith wearing something light colored? not quite recently i assume.

perhaps it's not because of some same old worn-out old gothic doom-and-gloom implications and perhaps not even only because black is beautiful (which is true of course and as such a good enough reason).
perhaps here's the (very simple and obvious) secret:

black is beautiful (http://curefans.com/index.php/v/publications/unknown_DE_blackisbeautiful.png.html?action=gallery)

robert smith of the cure always knew it: one is always on the safe side when dressed in black. above all people with sensitive skin should rather wear dark clothes in the summer.
to dress in light colors are more pleasant in high temperatures but white blouses, skirts and trousers offer comparatively little protection from the sun.
a thin white cotton t-shirt usually offers a protection factor from five to ten.
for lightskinned this means the risk of getting sunburns within half an hour spent in the sun.

(an unknown german newspaper; translation by me so any native german speaker feel free to offer a more accurate translation, if i made any mistakes)

so those of us on the northern hemisphere, getting scorched: remember to dress correctly, don't get burned. 8)

Ha! I'm going to use this on people who keep asking me why all my clothes are black, even in summer. :)

Thanks for the link japanesebaby  :)
You're translation is really good. Done a great job  :smth023

Okay, now i know that i can  wear more black in the summer without remose  :-D
I combine colour clothes with black, e.g. a black trouser with a violet t-shirt.
That could be also a reason why arabs sometimes wear black when it's 40 degree.

i always wondered about it but never decided to find out before. if this is correct, then it seems to be an air circulation/cooling effect thing rather than something against the sunburns. it works just as long as the cloth is very porous, letting the air easily through it. and that explains why beduins can actually wear woollen cloths(!) in the desert heat without fainting out of heat exposure: wool is very porous and thus one of the best natural materials for this kind of thing.
very clever, actually!:

"Another way to look at it is this its like having a FAN - The explanation I heard for this is that the clothes themselves are
very loose (rather like Roman togas). The extra heat caused by the
black colour causes increased upward convection of the air between
the cloth and their body. This additional air circulation actually aids in
evaporation of perspiration and thus results in better cooling.
another scientist put it like this:

Darker clothes absorb more of the sun's energy, so this seems to
make no sense, say David Halliday et al. in "Fundamentals of
Physics." In fact, black robes have been found to be 6 Celsius
degrees hotter than similar white robes. The Bedouin secret lies in
the convection breeze set up when the warmer air inside a dark robe
rises faster and escapes upward through the porous material, ****
in air from below. So a black robe winds up being no hotter, and its
circulating air may even make things more comfortable.
Notice that a key element in this system working is the convection
made possible by the escape of air through the porous material. "

It would be great to see Robert in something with light colors... but I can't see that day coming somehow  :-D

I love black, it fits with everything and I have many black things in my wardrobe but don't wear only black.. Just the opposite, love the colors especially in the summer... I'm not dark type of person...
I must say I love black shoes and have many of them  :-D

The last black thing I got myself a month ago is this beautiful black Ellen Tracy swing coat! Just love it!

Alright, let's take out the black clothes - it's nicer anyway. Somehow I feel better in dark/ black clothes than in light coloured ones. Nevertheless, it can lead to misunderstandings. (I was asked by pupils if I were an emo, punk etc.)

It's a very informativ article.  That's interesting that the Beduins and the arabs have special matters, that's why they're wearing black or woollen clothes in the summer when it's hot.
The arabian culture is very interesting  :)

Yes, you've hit the mark japanesebaby the emos have given black a bad name  :(

Why black? Here a few reasons: (from Man in Black lyrics by Johnny Cash)

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

:smth023 Yeah; that's the reason!

I have been to the course / lecture on depression ...
Depressed / fear etc. generally dresses to black and gray. They are protective of colors:) One thing that I have seen Robert is in it (hard to explain)
for example, in interviews he look away from the interviewer, not sit relax and twists bracelets. Once again the pictures he hold a hands on neck. Hand neck there is some kind of protection, too. They are more common signs of sensitive person  :-D

i'm a fashion design student ( althout i'm against fashion itself, and its meanings. i'm only into clothes as art and a way of expression:  fantasy-like clothing, show-like, drag queen clothes, underground movements - such as the REAL punks, from 70's, "goths" from 80's - new wavers and also all the 80's way of dressing.) i've studied about the black, and why every season they say back to black. Black is a very basic and simple "color", it goes with all kind of clothes, all kind of forms, all kind of colors, all kind of patterns, all kind of ages, genders, social groups. althout it's simple and basic, black can easily make u much more elegant, also it is kind of like a shelter..it's very confortable and it kind of gives the sense of "protection".. if u know what i mean.

that's why so many people wear black. and also because it is discrete.

sorry for any mistakes, but that's  my best in english xD

You can stock your wardrobe with light denims, khaki and even linen. Another thing to think about is tank tops. The most important aspect to look fashionable is to dress comfortably. You surely don't want to be a crazy fashionista while complaining with discomfort.

The main feature from black is that it doesn't reflect the sunlight, and
that's why it is so pleasant in the summer. Meanwhile I like the combination
with different colors although it isn't a "color" for real. It is partial darkness.
Edmund Burke once wrote "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our
Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful" with some effects of blackness.
For special occasions I like the black tone but not for every day life.

Hm, I always had the feeling that black makes me feel more heat in the sunlight (probably because it doesn't reflect the sunlight, but absorbs it!), thus I try to avoid black on hot summer days...

I meant it is more pleasant for the eyes of the observer. Of course,
it is hotter but the air circulation inside is better-loose black clothes presupposed.
(see reply#3) ;)

Yes, of course white and bright colours can be a bit "blinding" in the sun.
But other than that, I don't really care much about it...

It's a funny thing to wear a Cure T-shirt in spa gardens ('Kurpark' in German).
I did it last summer a few times and some people passed by with a smile. I knew they
did it because of the pun.  :-D
