about simon and his famous hat, did you know that:
RS: 'My mum was on the phone telling him that, if he took his hat off, it (=his hair) would grow much quicker, so he's taken it off a few times. We're trying to get him not to wear it on stage. Carol keeps telling him he's really handsome without his hat on which, of course, he is... It's amazing, he's actually talking to foreing people - who he hates, incidentally - without his hat on, which is the nearest thing to a miracle i've ever seen.'

he hated/hates talking to foreing people - that's great! finally the truth about "meeting fans". go simon, hope you've kept up that attitude, i like it when people are finally being honest.  :smth023

About Simon "meeting fans"...

I was told by a few people he was rather stand offish during meet and greats during the 4tour.  But then at The Shrine he was super cool, signaling to us as he drove in the gates that he'd come back.  He walked over, signed several autographs, and was quite pleasant.  He even joked with one gal who asked him to sign The Top LP, saying "Oh no, not that one"!  :P  Hmmm, it was his birthday.  Perhaps he only came over thinking that these hated foreigners might have some gifts for him  :smth017

Well, asking Simon to sign "The Top" is rather tactless...  :-D Maybe the girl just never checked the album credits and thought that, since it is a Cure album, Simon must be playing in it.

Finding the time to read all that might prove to be a bit difficult, but I suppose "mental carnage" is curiosity-inspiring enough for me to try it sometime...

By the way, "Shore Leave" is the name of a great Tom Waits song. Journalists often like to give this kind of "nod" to their audience, maybe hoping that it will get through (which possibly fails most of the time, but, hey, it's worth trying  :-D ).

Finally read it last Friday. It's curious how completely silly The Cure can get on tour, but then that's no surprise for anyone who has read articles or has watched off-stage footage from their tours... (and actually, Joy Division, who were even a more "serious" band, could even get more silly on tour... some of the practical jokes they played on one another were stupid to a shocking degree... )

One interesting thing about the mentioned Simple Minds vs. The Cure. I remember reading that article on a French magazine and recall that The Cure really beat The Minds on almost every aspect considered. And I also confirm that the most outstanding issue where The Cure lost was musicianship. If I'm not mistaken, the Cure got a 5 out of 10 in this field, and the explanation was that the only musician on the band that was above average (or above mediocre, I canĀ“t remember the exact words) was Porl Thompson...
