I don't think we can say someone who does like The Cure suffers of depression, but I always had the impression that most Cure fans were always more sensitive people than the "average".

It's interesting that you ask this because I realised the other day how depressing and sad lyrics we find in most Cure songs, specially songs during the "Faith" era. And not only in the lyrics, Robert's voice sounds sometimes like if he's giving up everything.

Having said this, hope you will be OK, Virpi.

I to, find it interesting and the question sort of goes with the territory of being a fan of Cure. If I may put forward a personal reflection it will be that there are certain songs that one prefer if being sad (or glad aswell) and that these songs will bring you to a state of equilibrium and normality. that is, of course, if nothing all too severe has happened. Then music mayby wont have any impact.

I myself find it very comforting to listen to Seventeen Seconds if the lights of my little corner of the world scatters.

But I wouldn´t take it that far as to say that people who likes the Cure suffers from depressions. Hopefully there is a sesitivety involved as dsanchez suggests.

I really hope that You get off of Your depression.

me too.

i once remember reading somewhere (or was it on the radio? not sure) some journalist say something like
"in the 80's, if you were someone who was very aware of things, you listened to U2 - if you were someone with issues (in life), you listened to the cure". whereas i do sort of understand where this journalist was getting at, i also dislike that sort of categorizing. because when you think about it and look around, for every person who got into the cure because of hearing 'faith' or 'pornography', there always seems to be a person who got into the band because of 'the lovecats' or 'friday i'm in love'. so it's a lot more complicated than that. the sensitivity factor twice mentioned above seems to be a sort of key. but there is sensitiveness and there is sensitiveness.
well i hope that makes some sense.

anyway, to me the cure is very enigmatic, their strength always been in being so versatile and often unpredictable (just like the life is like). so i guess their fan-base is also quite varied, and quite naturally so.

My g'friend cant listen to The Cure anymore because of memory about this kinda 'black' period between us...

BUT IM STILL THE CURE FAN!!!! YAHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!  :-D

i've apparently had it for a little while. i dont think depression and the cure go hand in hand, the cure seem to be great at 'mood' music though i think. their songs are great at expressing an emotion in one of its purest forms. like when i'm in a great mood, i cant really listen to anything but doing the unstuck. i used to lie in my room in the dark with disintegration, faith and seventeen seconds on repeat. their not a symptom of depression, more just a mood setter.
hope you feel better soon.

i don't think the cure's music have this depressing quality at all. but try joy division and it's there -> http://curefans.com/index.php/topic,2057.msg63839.html#msg63839

although i'm not sure what everyone means by "depression" here. just feeling low at times (which is perfectly normal) or really being clinically depressed(?).

i've suffered with depression, anxiety since my early teenage years. the cure's music has been an anchor these last 20 years. everything from being an outsider in high school, losing the love of my life, raising a child on my own(who is a huge fan herself), losing my grandparents and a whole mess of other harsh things.
i've never relied on medical help for my problems, just mad bob and his band of merry holligans. :-D

many of these testimonials actually make me think that the cure is/has been more like eh, a cure for depression than something that goes along with it.
so i'd say that the cure fans are no more prone to depression than any other people are but the cure fans have some extra home remedy to treat that unhappy state with.
just my two cents at the moment.

i actually did get into the cure during my teen angst stage of life.  and i definitely had those days when i'd be blasting pornography, angry at the world.

but as for true depression, i don't really suffer from it.  i'm certainly a very very emotional person though.
