Title: Ideas for Christmas
Post by: dsanchez on November 09, 2006, 22:17:20
Christmas is coming and among other things, it's specially a time to SHARE.

Here at my work we play at the "secret friend". That means, we get pappers with the name of someone and then I am suposse to buy a present for this person who does not expect a present from me. You've got it?

Thought we should make something like that or something else here.

Ideas?

Cheers

David.

on the white stripes forum i go on we have a christmas mix cd swap, someone organises and all participants get give a member, we then send a compilation cd to them. we also recieve one from another member, whho gets whos CD is kept secret to add to the fun of getting it. its a simple but fun idea

it is a great idea, but how could we make it work?????

This is a great idea but difficult to organize !!!

Who can take part ???

How to select the "secret friend" ???

how to choose gifts ???
Title: Re: Ideas for Christmas
Post by: Dillinger on November 14, 2006, 22:23:16
its relativly simple;

1. someone volounteers to take charge

2. everybody who wants to take part and is willing to send their compilation cd anywhere in the world emails the person in charge wit their username, real name and address.

3. at a set date entrys are closed. the person in charge starts to randomly distribute members to people, eg i could be told i would be sending my cd to david and tof could be told he would be sending to me.

4. this is all kept secret so its funner when we recieve our mix cd

5. enjoy the new music!

you could also impose a rule like only people who are active enough can take part but that might not work here. the person in charge must not give out your details to anyone other than the person sending you a cd, there for i think a moderator would be the best candidate for this job.

Thanks for your ideas farquad. Actually we do something quite similar here at my work. We put our name in pieces of papper. Then everyone go to get a papper randomly.

We will see how it works in Curefans.com.

Thanks again farquad92  :smth023

no problem, ive already made the cd for the other forum so all il have to do is take out the cure track for something else and im done (i propse a no cure or glove or banshees tracks; basically anything the band have played on we dont just want a trilogy compilation ) and also no more than 2 tracks per artist on the compilation f or the same reason.

i highly doubt mine will go down well at all here but you never know i put pull the one other member with similiar tastes.

Can we work this out this time?. Of course no-one is obligated, but it might be fun  :smth023

Here in OZ it's called 'Kris Kringle'... names pulled out of a 'hat' and you are obliged to get that name you picked out..a gift.. usually with a limit.. ay $5, or $10. It occurs also in families where the 'spirit'  of christmas has been so commercialised.. :smth011

I have always liked the idea of Kris Kringle.. that way, you have a limited budget, and only have one present to purchase.. and everyone benefits..sometimes for a grateful cause, and that's what x-mas is about.. the thought, Not the $$$$$$.
I'm in guys..  :smth023

What a great idea!! Of course, the logistics are a little overwhelming, but I am sure someone here will be able to work it all out!! May I make a suggestion? Because I am SURE that my other tastes in music would not appeal to say, the younger members ( and probably not the older ones either!!) and that the cd disc would more than likely end up as a coaster, I was thinking, how about a small "souvenier" from your own country or region?  I live in a small coastal town, well known for it's fishing, large port for ships, the prawn fleet etc. There are some lovely 'fridge magnets, coasters, spoons, key rings etc. depicting this. Not expensive items, reasonably small and inexpensive to post. I would LOVE to receive something similar from a country far away and would be so happy to send something like this to someone! I'm not saying to scrap the cd idea, not at all, but maybe having a choice of gifts to send would be ok? It is a shame this idea didn't come up earlier, as the xmas post is full on now, but, even if the gifts didn't arrive until after xmas, it is indeed, the thought that counts. What do you think?   :smth017

Hhhmm....they've actually been doing a gift exchange over at MFC for years.  Never participated in it. :smth023

Dunno if I could participate in one of those gift exhcanges here either.  Only cos I'm still sort of new here and I don't really know anyone.  Plus I'm broke. :(

Cool idea melly! I like that because we are from pretty much everywere all over the world it could be quite good. I like both ideas - there's no better gift than the gift of music  :D

:D Yes i like both idea's, but really also like Melly's idea, As it can be hard to buy music or The Cure, seeing as though
most people have got it already.

And iam also broke at moment, So i like the mystery, surprise idea.  :smth023  thats great to open something from oversea's
and not know what it is.
Iam also doing this at moment, making a small gift for someone oversea's.  Sweet idea    :smth050 :smth051

That's nice idea. I was also thinking that it has not to be mandatory to send a CD or a music-related gift (however if someone wants to do it, he's free to do it so, of course). So let's do this way:

*We would need at least 10 people to make this happen. I don't think it has much sense when we are +1500 members, and only 4 or 6 people are interested.

*Persons interested in the "Secret friend" game may send an e-mail to info@curefans.com indicating their complete name and address until 7th december at most.

*Randomly, Curefans.com will choose the pair of members who will exchange the gifts. Every member will be notified by 9th december who will be his/her "Secret friend"

*Members who are in the game engage to send her/his gift as soon as possible (as christmas is quite soon!)

If you have any suggestions please send me a PM! :smth023

:smth023

David.

ps: hope the other staff members will join the idea

I've registered!! Hey, we don't have much money either, especially coming up tp Xmas, but, to spend a few dollars on a small "gift" then maybe some dollars to post ( wouldn't be too much) would give me as much joy as receiving something!
OoOO can't wait to go and have a good look at the souveniers at the little shop down the street!!  :smth041
Do we put a little note in the present? Like..hi..It's melly from Oz...or do we keep it anonymous?

Both are very nice as gifts...but, personally, I always treasure something someone has made, or painted, for me. To know that the person has taken the time and put in the effort to actually make me something warms my heart. I still have every card my son has made me, plus any small "trinkets" he lovingly crafted whilst he was small. They are as precious as gold to me. So, I hope that may help you in your decision!!  :smth023

It doesn't matter if you're new here ( I am!) and don't really "know" anybody, and you certainly do not have to spend much money at all...it's the whole spirit of Christmas thing..... c'mon Curefans!! Let's get a few more!! please??  I know you can do it.... :smth023

Melly~ Yes iam still inn, if after xmas.

But love the idea of whatever goes= surprise gifts  :D  (music is good also, but i personally find hard
to choose for others.)  So if you want to give music is good, but i think i will choose 'other'  to give, and also dont mind after xmas.

Lovely idea either way.  :smth051   :smth050

but thinking of David and the problems,  I also dont mind if we do it next xmas.  :smth023  In the meantime is the thought that matters,
and being late, people having their own problems,

Next year probably also better for me. (to be honest)   i stay tunned though and see what happens  :smth058

Dear members,

Everyone who wrote to info@curefans.com joining this game must have by now his/her "secret friend" details.

Every person was given a number and then randomly (http://www.augustana.ab.ca/~mohrj/algorithms/scramble.html) we re-ordered the numbers to form the pairs.

If you have any further question please write to info@curefans.com

Remember to keep as secret who is your "Secret friend". The surprise is the most important thing in this game!

Enjoy :smth023

David.

just as a matter of interest, how many did we end up with?

Got mine early yesterday morning, and seeing as though we had to go out, thought I would go and buy my "secret present" for my secret recipient...got pretty excited about it all, took a while to pick what I wanted to send...OoOo will they like this..or this...Hmmm..maybe that... payed for it and hightailed it to the post office, name and address firmly in hand. Now, I know we live in a country town, and that, apart from the supermarket, everything closes at mid-day on a Saturday  ( lots of sport played you know) I was SO cross that after I cannoned into the post office door (thought it would be open!!) I read in disbelief, on the door, that they close at 11am on a Saturday!!  :smth099  They are new in town, the people running it...I think they have a bit to learn!! Especially at Xmas time!! I was pretty disappointed, you know, all excited and happy to be posting off this pressie... gotta wait until Monday now... Hmmmpphh...  :smth012
Title: Re: Ideas for Christmas

hey guys,

We've got this question today

Quotewhen i send my secret friend a xmas gift, do I reveal who I am ( my real name and address)? Normally I put a return address on mail, so I know if it gets lost. I have no problem with revealing who I am, but what are the rules?

And the answer is OF COURSE!...you have to put your name on the envelope you're sending to your secret friend. Otherwhise how she/he will known who's sending the gift? :smth001

For example, I plan to write a small letter to my secret friend and so on. And of course I'll put my name in the envelope, etc.

The only rule would be not to reveal who's your secret friend until he/she say that he/she got your gift. That's all I guess :smth001

Because most of us are at opposite ends of the planet, it will be a miracle in itself if any of the presents arrive before xmas,as we have to post our gifts; I think using a courier service could be a tad expensive!!  :smth001  And because this brilliant idea only came up recently, it's get in the post and hope for the best!! It is nice to receive something after xmas anyway, it's the thought that counts!! ( unless it's a card from someone you forgot..it's like Oh No..too late to send them a Merry Christmas card!!) When I went to post my present off, the lady in the post office weighed it, then told me how much it would cost to send airmail..I explained to her that I didn't wish for it to have an actual seat on the 'plane...  So, a rethink was called for!! All sorted out now, and I have resumed normal breathing...after that shock!! :smth038

Good news about your boyfriend..(Humpy?? dare I ask??!!)

Hi Rogue,

Every member send directly her/his gift to her/his secret friend. Unfortunately we would  need someone else besides you on the game, because all address were sent already to the peoople who suscribed to the game.

Mmmmhhhh..Please tell me again that this is all about the Xmas spirit and the joy of sharing and it's the thought that counts... Because I drew a name which leaves me at a total loss! Oh well.

@FarFar: I too, like Melly, would really like to know what a humpy boyfriend is like. Doesn't sound half bad, actually.

yep, it's all about what you say... don't fret! You don't have to buy something expensive, or large (or heavy!!!)...a "token", you know, maybe depicting the area, town, or even country where you live...don't worry about " will this person like my present?"... I am sure we ALL will love whatever we receive from our far-away pals!!....  :smth026

There, just what I needed to hear.  :D
Unfortunately, telling me not to worry is like telling me not to breathe... It's what I do best! For instance, yesterday my karma went down by a point, and it's not like I fret about having a high karma so I can preen about it, but I'm worried that I offended someone without realizing it! Oh well, hope not... Anyway, I bought my present today, so I'm cool!

Me too Robiola ~ But iam cool & worthy of real karma, in the real world, and if i did offend anyone iam sorry.

Bit of a joke though, i think i asked someone a question, have not received an answer, so maybe was them, yes hmm makes you think.
(also about alot of nice people that have left forum )

But not enough to care about my neo-Karma, beyond saying sorry and expressing my thoughts nothing else i can do.  Problemo solved.  8)

Am looking forward to x-mas this year, didnt think i would, also very excited, been invited to party and my street is also having a party,
should be very nice.  :smth050

Am also awaiting some exciting news  :smth060

I'm trying to get into the Xmas spirit, but it's kind of hard because 1.I sort of hate shopping and 2.I have to work a lot this time of year.
I work the 24th, 25th, 26th, and also 31st and Jan.1st!! Yech. What kind of holidays are those??? I can't even wake up with my son on Xmas morning...Sigh. Oh well, nobody forced me to choose that job, eh? Today I forced myself to go shopping and I bought some gifts -- DVDs for my husband, pretty scarf for my sister, toys for my niece, my secret firend present; and from me to myself,a nice hat and  KissMe(3) because I lost the CD a long time ago by lending it out and never got it back. So now I have it again! :smth020

christmas is in the spirit of giving. I know that I enjoyed thoroughly of sending  to my secret friend soo much, (of course with the anxiety of wondering whether they will like what they recieve)!
I have no expectations to what I recieve, other than a warm fuzzy feeling that you get when you appreciate how BIG the world is, and what links us all together.. human spirit.

It is a fantastic idea from David, to pop in a letter ... but unfortunately, the post office was sooo busy, what with the organising of actually sending my secret friend a gift.. and this time of year the post office is extremely busy, I could not even think to write a letter!! what a fabulous idea.. :smth023

If you want to talk about anything else, please feel free to open a new topic, or discuss the  subject in another related topic.

eleven....well, that's ok considering there wasn't much time!! It was a great idea, and just that smile you have when you post your "secret present"....I mean, it's going to someone I have never met, and possibly never will!! But, through being on Curefans, I am able to, hopefully, make someone smile... And I eagerly await my "secret present"..not for the material aspect, just that it's coming from a place far away ( i don't know where!!) and that someone has taken the trouble to do it...for me...for melly..... don't care what it is...I will love it.... cos someone has done it....for me.... :smth050

Hey, I sent  home-made cd compilation....I had my husband help me with it. I had originally bought a present but then I decided cure4sale would enjoy a cd more, and  kept the gift for myself. I can assure you it was nothing fancy or expensive, and I'm not expecting anything of the kind from my secret friend. Everyone gives according to their possibilities. And I believe it was specifically agreed that we wouldn't send anything expensive, anyway! So don't worry!  :smth056

I am very happy that my secret friend, Angie.. recieved my little gift!! oh how i spent hours deliberating!! I just got a PM today from angie.. and I am so happy that through this forum, we can have buddies all over the world!!
Thank you David for organising this .. and I'm sure more will register next year ( maybe a bit earlier though!!)
By the way.. there are no scrooges who are involved in this year's secret friend.. remember.. it is the thought that counts!! And that can be VERY difficult deciding on something for someone that you don't know at all!! ( believe me!!)

As David had mentioned earlier in the thread, he actually wrote a letter to his secret friend.. now THAT is something I am totally incapable of doing.. and yet it is a wonderful, personal touch!!  ;)

oh melly... if i could concentrate on making a personal card, and writing a letter, this is what i really wanted to do,  but  I am a bit dyslexic when I come to write.. I mentally freeze!! ( I have to get my son to write things.. that's why my posts are repetative and don't make sense..  :smth100  I can press one button at a time!!  :smth023

the c.d.s I put together cost nothing, I just compiled a few albums.. ( Time was the only cost there)
The only real expense, of course was the delivery, but I was soo excited, and the destination so far, it was ok for me.
( I have a sibling who lives on an island in the Indian Ocean, and am used to the delivery charges..)

please don;t fret. I am just waiting at the mailbox everyday... everyday my son asks..' have you got your secret friend's gift?'.. It will be my only xmas gift for me.. so even a note saying "Hi" will cheer me up for a long time!!!  :smth020 :P :D

ahh..ok..thanks you lot...made me feel a bit better...and yes, I too hope it happens again for this xmas; it was such a good idea, and in the space of time we had to organise our pressies, I believe it was a success...I shall be saving my pennies for the next one,be better prepared, as the initial shock of the cost of the postage for my original gift made me faint!!    So, a re-think was needed, and a "lesser" package posted...that's why I was disappointed...with myself really...
But, after reading what you have said, I feel a lighter side shinin' thru!! Fanks... :smth026

WARNING: LONG AND INCOHERENT.
Yay....Got it!! Melly....you silly, silly girl. Why would I not like your gift?? Did you think I was expecting a diamond necklace or something? You're a genius and you don't even know it, and here's why.
Melly sent me a Xmas card (very nice touch) and two souvenirs from her town, a fridge magnet (lovely and sparkly, my  son already tried to steal it) and a metal-clip bookmark (perfect, I almost always carry around a book and I guarantee I'll be the only one sporting a "Wallaroo, South Australia" bookmark). Along with them  there were various postcards of her town and a letter describing the town, its history, main features, and a bit about what it's like to live there, the people and activities and some personal details (good luck catching those sneaky crabs).  And that's what made the difference...In these days when all nations import and export until we're all dizzy, it's normal to have objects from all around the world in your home, you don't give it a second thought. But all the "background" and images made it so that when I was holding the gifts, I recaptured that special, long-forgotten feeling of holding a tiny piece of life in a far away country that I've never visited, of a reality that's foreing to me -- like the first time I got a gift from a far away country when I was a kid and it felt like touching something a little bit alien, from another world, which made it so special.
So I ramble on and on and I'm still not sure I've managed to explain, but anyway
Thank you thank you thank you, I loved it! :smth060

My package had an Australia Post sticker that said "Delayed for compliance with aviation security regulations". Maybe that's the problem with your package...? Well, the Xmas post rush makes things tough -- my friend got my gift four days ago, and that was only travelling from Italy to France!

Oh wow!! What a lovely, lovely thing to say about my little gifts Robiola...brought a tear to my eye, to be honest.....I am so happy you liked my "offerings"...and no, I wasn't under the impression that you would expect something glamorous or expensive, not at all...but after I read what others had sent to their "secret friends", my heart sank, as I felt what I had sent would be a little disappointing... Ahhh, you have made my day with your kind words...thankyou...  :smth058

I don't quite understand why the parcel had the " delayed for compliance with aviation security regulations" sticker on it   :smth017 I had signed the sticker which said there wasn't anything dangerous in it...the only thing I can think of, when it passed through the xray machine at the airport, the bookmark set an alarm off, as it is metal??  I can just imagine Customs, rushing it the bench, carefully, carefully, dismantling the parcel, hearts racing, adrenalin pumping, and then!!! it's a bookmark and a fish magnet... he he he... ah well, at least it got there...eventually!!!

Hey scatcat, I haven't received my gift yet either!!  maybe ours are sitting in customs, been dismantled as we speak!!
