Title: The Cure In Orange: Anniversary
Post by: dsanchez on August 09, 2005, 18:19:52
Just few days for the anniversary of the greatest Cure concert ever

19 years ago the best band of the world gave one of their best concerts ever. Filmed by Tim Pope, the concert in the french city Orange (close to Avignon) was one of the mast enigmatic and loved by Cure fans throught the years.

The venue could not be even more perfect. The unbelievable nice  "Theatre Antique D'Orange" was the perfect place for the perfect band. And as never, Robert Smith shows a short hair since years. In words of him, he wanted to show that "the music is most important than how you looks like".

The setlist couldn't better, and the hightlights could be the unbelievable nice versions of PUSH and A NIGHT LIKE THIS.

A VISUAL DOCUMENTARY
(from cure-concerts.de)

The Cure play a string of festivals in Spain and France. The last, on August 9, at the Roman Amphitheatre in Provence, is filmed in it's entirety by Tim Pope, the first rock concert at the venue since Dire Straits two years previous.

"We wanted to film it ... because every concert we do now reaches a point that has seemed unattainable in the past and I wanted it captured for ever, before we move on or give up. I don't think it's a risk working with Pap because he isn't really a director. We could have got in some proper director to make a film of any old concert but he wouldn't know what the band was about and I want this to be a Cure film about The Cure." ...

Tim Pope: "This one's absolute psychedelic madness." To heighten the obvious comparsions with Pink Floyd's Live At Pompeii, the band play 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' at soundcheck. And, reports Melody Maker, they play it perfectly.

"The risks, of course, are many. Because of the limited budget, all the live filming had to be done on Saturday, at the concert, with close-ups following during Sunday's mock up. Rain on one or both days would have scuppered the whole thing - ?150,000 literally down the rain because they couldn't comprehend their cheapest insurance quote: ?50,000. I didn't rain until Monday."

THE SETLIST

09.08.1986 Orange - Theatre Antique D'Orange

shake dog shake, piggy in the mirror, play for today, a strange day, primary, kyoto song, charlotte sometimes, inbetween days, the walk, a night like this, push, one hundred years, a forest, sinking,
E1: close to me, let's go to bed, six different ways,
E2: three imaginary boys, boys don't cry,
E3: faith, give me it, 10.15 saturday night, killing an arab

I remember here in peru a private tv station channel 27  aired the whole video concert in 1987, i have memories of this videojockey showing the video tape and playing the whole show hours after hours! days after days!!  wow!!

but after all i consider ENTREAT is the best live recording released by the cure and it deserves a video release!!

I remember that time and the feelings so well... I was 15 and The Cure was something dark, strange, unknown and even forbidden amongst my school-mates, hahaha! This thread just made me remember the flyer we created back in may 1988 when we showed "The Cure In Orange' for the first time in our local lighthouse.. It was also the first time I saw that movie myself and I remember when I saw Simon lifting Robert's "hair", or the thing with the cable of the mic on 'Close To Me'.. GREAT! By the way, I made I scan of this flyer for you:

Can anyone imagine doing things like this WITHOUT a computer??
And the entrance cost was DM 6 !!! This is less than ? 3 nowadays, unimaginable...

All in all feelings and memories I will never forget!!

Cheers,
Christian

I never fully appreciated this concert until recently. I had always favored Show and the stuff from around that era, but I now find "Orange" to be incredible. As others have said, it was the perfect sound, perfect place, perfect lineup... everything!

They had such an awesome sound back then. But the way Robert's guitar sounds... Just listen to the part in the middle of A Strange Day where he plays by himself. You can just hear the smooth sound fill the stadium. It's breathtaking. His guitar doesn't sound like that at all anymore...

So much more I could say, but you all know how it is...

I'm going to watch this show later tonight to celebrate the anniversary! :P

Everything was perfect at this concert. Even Robert's entry on a stage...

(Imagine that they play there only songs from Pornography...).

The "In Orange" show brings to me good memories. I saw it for the first time in 1990. In fact, at that time virtually all my schoolmates loved The Cure. So. me and some friends  made a little reunion to watch the "In Orange" show of  and we were astonished by the strenght of the performances. Even someone stood up and played his air-guitar during "Push". This makes this show extra special to me  :)

In 86 i was 12 years old, when they played in Orange i was in the south of France, not so far from the amphiteatre...i just discovered the cure, but...with my best old friend, an old cure fan too, years after we spend night looking to the record, drinking, dancing, smooking, falling down...a real dream...a sunny warm movement. I've always loved this concert... in my opinion it beats the pants off of Show (in both sound and setlist... although Show's version of "A Forest" is marvelous).  Trilogy is obviously the best live release... besides the point!  The Cure "In Orange" is just an incredible Cure performance at an incredible venue.

Simon's best hairdo: the one in my picture, and the one in that video. I love that! :smth023

Robert's hair in ORANGE, however, not so much. But nowadays, the tables have turned and only Robert sports the trademark Cure doe.

Rock on, you big-haired gods!

. . . . . . . . .  From that moment - To "Sweet talking guy"  absolute magic.  :smth023

Thanx for the visuals David. Wish i could have been there, but wrapt i get to see it at home aswell.  :D

~I like Simons hair now, really looks good, suits his style~ compaired to then, but at the time it was perfect. Thats what i think anyway- he just looked so cool at Melb concert really matched everything.
And of course Robert looked great too !! but for me, i always think he does.

Excuse me? Orange, Concert and Entreat are infinitely superior to Trilogy!

In fact, I'd prefer every miserable pre 1995 bootleg to Trilogy!

Two pictures here

It's so awesome place that I think The Cure should play there again. I was never a  big fan of petitions, but I just opened one to see if this can be hear by Robert. A second The Cure in Orange: my new dream.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm not really sure they should go back to Orange. I think it was a great moment in history and should be left alone.

There's all kinds of other similar amphitheaters they could play at (like Taormina, etc.)

Yes, there are all kinds, but the one from Orange is the best preserved amphitheater from the whole europe. I have nothing left but faith in this case. And the acoustic from that place is just awesome. I don't know, as I wrote before, when you're in that place, you just can dream of that.

I suppose so. But maybe it should just be a concert that isn't filmed and made for an official release. Because I think it can be silly for a band to recapture a moment like that, one that happened so long ago.

Because quite simply, I just don't think The Cure is as good as they were 22 years ago (I'm not saying they're bad).

Huh, I never thought I'd be saying that I hope a concert isn't profesionally recorded. I guess I have mixed feelings about it...

i can understand very well that visiting a place like orange can make one wish it could all happen again. i can see this.

but i still do agree with caley:
i think bands like the cure must be very careful for not starting to do stuff that would be deliberately and blatantly nostalgic. and something like "orange part2" would be completely impossible to interpret as not being nostalgic, whatever they tried there.
bands like the cure must be very careful because could so easily slip into that nostalgy phase... and soon they might find themselves being just a parody of themselves, even if they never intended that.
so i think it's very important for them to look forward and find something new today, not to go back.
and i don't think one needs to be old-fashioned to think like this - i think quite on the contrary, maybe.

by the way this is exactly the same reason why i do think the "no keyboards" phase they are doing now is merely a good thing: people think i say so because i never liked roger and because i somehow enjoy all the songs more without keyboards - but that's not true. i actually do miss keyboards on certain songs just like many others do, BUT i still feel it's a lot more fruitful for them to try something new than just keep doing everything in the old style. because that proves that they are still alive, still motivated, still have something left to say and not just repeat themselves - and THAT is the most important thing for me. :smth023

Ups. I didn't mean they would film another "The Cure in Orange". I just would love them to see playing in such an amazing place and I would die for be at that show. I completely agree with you that there will be just one "The Cure in Orange" (the one from 1986) and that would be senseless to make another film there (I don't think Robert would do it either). Just the satisfaction to see them playing at THAT place, that's what I would love.

ps. sorry if i don't sign - it's not that i don't hope you could re-live that moment, not at all. but i just don't think they should start re-doing things, especially things like that. i think the power of orange is in the fact that it was a one-off thing. to try it again would be a suicide... especially today, like caley pointed out. if they did it, i think we could not avoid comparing the two performances in a way that wouldn't do any real justice to either performance.

ps2. instead of orange, they could come and play here in finland for a change ;) - because hey they play in france all the time anyway! ;-P or they could play more countries they never did before, like they just did in the far east - i think that was cool. there are just so many things they haven't done yet!

i guess it depends on what part of the show you were screaming: if you did during play for today or the first minutes of plainsong, i think the chances he heard you might indeed be indeed quite poor...  8)
in any case, you must have had a MIGHTY LOUD VOICE to catch his attention there hehe  ;)

Woops I discovered this topic a bit late I guess haha.

But it's true that this place is magical, it's so big yet so small, really a place with good atmosphere and great acoustic. I'd just love to see The Cure play there again caus now people like me (who were too young or not even born yet at the time of the Orange show) also can have a turn. And maybe a good chance to see how the 'new' Curesongs sound in the theatre!

But I'm not sure wether they'd be up for it to be honest. I would like it as well if they'd finally visited some places around the world where they don't go too often, or never been like Russia and South America. I'm sure that fans that live there would go nuts if they WOULD do another Orange show but keep on refusing going to these new places.

we'll see, we'll see

so another question then: is it circulating as an "unofficial" dvd? (ripped from video or perhaps laserdisc?)

Of course it is.

But hmmm... This may be a taboo subject.

Yeah, taboo is probably the right word. But it is good to know. Thanks for the info.

i wouldnt mind at all if someone was willing to mail me a dvd. i cant afford the vhs, so all i can do is watch what youtube has to offer - and the last three songs are missing on YT. if i had any cure vhs i would definetly get those onto dvd  because tape's quality degrades after much playing, and that was decades ago!

i just love love the crowds energy in Orange. not only is the lineup one of the best in their entire band history, everything just fit. the backdrop and atmostphere perfectly fit the cure. what was the last concert played in that theater? i would like to go there someday

well i really have to disagree. imo, it's precisely because we are fans that we should avoid copying official stuff and/or avoid urging anyone to do it.
fans should always show example and simply go and buy themselves a copy...

forgot for a moment. i take back what i said earlier. and i think that real fans spend their money on the official items (which dont cost that much on sites like ebay and the like).

http://cocosuodo.magicrpm.com/38086/The-Cure----Under-the-cheri-moon--The-Melody-Maker--1986-/ -  i used google translator, but no online translator is perfect, far from it, so i was able to get a general idea.

from the gist of the story, i think that a girl was able to go backstage or something for water. and that she wanted to meet simon too? then her mother called because the girl was wearing the family jewels? it sounds like the girl had wanted an encounter with simon? the article is very funny, but you can see the problems with Lol. and the simon and the girl part irks me

I found the VHS version of this on Ebay around five years ago. Would love to hear a replication of the set on the upcoming tour.

I didn't know it was out on DVD yet!

Seriously, though - as long as they are to stupid to release it themselves, the fans should be free to trade this show in it's best possible quality as some kind of preservation project.

It's not as though official copies of the VHS or LD are still being sold on the big scale, so there would be no loss for The Cure or the record company. If they were interested in selling it, they would have released it on DVD years ago!

I have a VCD version and LaserDisc version.  I don't have my laserDisc player anymore since it broke, but the VCD looks pretty good.  I think it is from the VHS.  I do hope they release a Blu version in the near future.

http://www.petitiononline.com/19953043/petition.html

I have got so far 42 signatures, but since petitiononline sucks so badly, I've just created a new petition here for The Cure to play in Orange

I think petitions are worthless, and I don't think The Cure will play again in this awesome place, but I guess I lose nothing trying it. "The Cure In Orange 2009", who knows?

Google videos has the entire 'In Orange'  show for those who haven't seen it. Obviously watching it on a computer is not as good as watching the VCD, but it's something at least.

Anyway, I found this in Twitter and thought I would share it with you: a rare poster to promote the movie (probably in Germany). Enjoy!

I usually don't care for live performances too much, but this Piggy in the Mirror is at least as good as the album version:

Edit: tried to insert a time code so it would start at 6:06, but without success
