Title: Your most favourite lyric of a song..other than The Cure!
Post by: Sussex on August 18, 2008, 08:04:58
Name the song that u like the lyric the most..

For me:

Placebo - One of a kind

On top of the world you get nothing done,
Talk is cold and burns like the sun,
Can't you see these skies are breaking?
Coz on top of the world is where I'm from..
The back of the class is where I was,
Keeping quiet, playing dumb,
Can't you see these skies are breaking?
Coz the back of the class is where I'm from ..

And I am one,
I am .
I am one,
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am.

I'm in a race and it's killing time,
I don't need yours I'll keep it with mine,
Can't you see these skies are breaking?
Coz I'm in a race and I'm doing fine,
Thank you.

Two of a kind and no one home,
I'm in a crowd and I'm still alone,
Can't you see these skies are breaking?
Cos one of a kind is all I own..

I am one,
I am.
I am one,
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am.

Out of the womb and into the void,
I wanna try but I get annoyed,
Can't you see these skies are breaking?
So out of the womb and into the void.

I am one,
I am.
I am one,
I am I am I am I am.
I am one,
I am.
I am one,
I am I am I am I am I am.

On top of the world you get nothing done.

Simply stunning..heroes sometimes fake to be fakers.

Prince--"She's Always In My Hair (New Mix)"

Whenever I feel like givin' up
Whenever my sunshine turns 2 rain
Whenever my hopes and dreams are aimed in the wrong direction
She's always there tellin' me how much she cares
She's always in my hair

She's always in my hair, my hair

Whenever I feel like not to great at all
Whenever I'm alone
Even if I hit the wrong notes she's always in my boat
She's always there tellin' me how much she cares
She's always in my hair

She's always in my hair ,my hair

Maybe I'll marry her, maybe I won't
Maybe I will not be long
Lemme tell ya if I was a gigilo all my life
She'd still be there tellin' me just how much she really cares
She's always in my hair

She's always in my hair, my hair

Listen, whenever I feel like givin up
Whenever my sunshine turns 2 rain
Whenever my hopes and dreams are aimed in the wrong direction
She's always there tellin' me just how much she cares
Always in my hair

She's always in my hair, my hair

Yeah, when I feel like breaking down
That woman she all around, my hair
Yeah, woman she in my hair, my hair

She's always in my hair

Maybe I'll marry her, maybe I will not
Lemme tell ya if I was a gigilo all my life she'd still be there
Cos you know she thinks I'm hot
That woman thinks I'm hot
But she knows I feel like givin up
Feel like givin up
When my sunshine turns to rain, yeah
I hold my dreams in a misinformed direction

She's always
She's always in my hair
Woman she's in my hair

My hair - that woman, she in my hair
That woman she in my hair
My hair, my hair

She's in my hair

Those words are prolly wrong.  I wrote them whilst listening to the song and that's what I heard.  So..sorry to Prince for getting his words wrong. ;)

There are many songs with lyrics that I like very much...but surely ONE by U2 is the song with my all times favourite lyrics! :smth049

Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame
You say

One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's

Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One

Have you come here for forgiveness?
Have you come to raise the dead?
Have you come here to play Jesus?
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

One
One

Just one part of a song
Blue Monday - New Order

"And I still find it so hard
To say what I need to say
But I'm quite sure that you'll tell me
Just how I should feel today"

I've recently re-discovered the Smashing Pumpkins and this lyric from The Everlasting Gaze has captured my imagination for the moment....

"We all want to hold in the everlasting gaze
enchanted by the rapture of his sentimental sway
but underneath the wheels lie the skulls of every cog
the fickle fascination of an everlasting god..."

Saw them do this live on prime time TV back in the 80's & they really horsed it up (well, Barney did anyway).
It went..
"..& I still find it so hard.
To stay in tune with you.
But I'm quite sure that you'll tell me.
What the f*** we should do"

:smth023

It was honestly dreadful.

i guess lots of NIN would qualify for me...

Yes I am alone but then again I always was
As far back as I can tell
I think maybe it's because
Because you were never really real to begin with
I just made you up to hurt myself...

'only' (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nineinchnails/only.html) (not at all my favorite NIN song music wise but perhaps the most true lyrics about god i ever came across...)

or 'right where it belongs' (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nineinchnails/rightwhereitbelongs.html)

some kate:

Is that the wind from the desert song?
Is that the autumn leaf falling?
Or is that you walking home?

(kate bush: 'how to be invisible')

Keep us close to your heart
So if the skies turn dark
We may live on in
Comets and stars

(kate bush: 'sunset')

and:

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky

(nick drake: 'northern sky')

ok that's far too many already...

Even though im not into Rolling Stones, but these lyric really touched me..

Dead Flowers
-Send me dead flowers to my wedding And I won't forget to put roses on your   grave

You Can't Always Get What You Want
-You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime you just might    find, you get what you need

The lyrics to Christian Death songs are amazing, and I won't go into too much detail but I will mention that their first album (and best, IMO) has some of the greatest, most twistedly poetic lyrics mine ears have been witness to.

The following lyrics by Bono. The song is "Wild Irish Rose" and was performed on a TV film by just Bono and The Edge, even though it seems to be generally credited to U2. The lyrics have been transcribed from that film, so i suppose they are not completely official ones. This is possibly lyrically better and deeper than anything Robert has ever written, but let us just leave it without further comment.

In a field by a river
my love and I did lie
And on my naked shoulder
she too proud to cry
She said that I must leave her
an icy tear she froze
How could I melt the heart
Of a Wild Irish Rose

Well a gypsy she has made of me
A servent of the street
And back to bed I've travelled
To taste a love as sweet
Well the heart it knows no reasons
And reason never knows
As I lie with them I'm thinking
Of a Wild Irish Rose

Well I saw the city of angels
It brought a devil out in me
And Hell's hotel on Sunset
Showed a **** no mercy
As the orange sky was screaming
From the roof I let her go
These are the dizzying heights that brought me
My Wild Irish Rose

Now red is the rose
That she layed on my grave
A life is what she wanted
And a life I surely gave
Like a hundred men before me
They lay lying here in rows
Young men, bloody
As a Wild Irish Rose

quite long ago i remember seeing this TV documentary about irish (folk) music and i think the documentary ended on bono and the edge performing this song. because of the context i actually always thought it was some traditional irish folk song, or at least something written by some traditional musician, not by them. but i suppose i must have been wrong!

and yes, i've already posted too many on this thread but i forgot something i should have mentioned among the first ones:
'there is a light that never goes out' by the smiths.

and even though i absolutely dislike morrissey, even then i have to give this song & the lyrics the credit it deserves.
top three love songs of all time, no question about it:

Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I havent got one
Anymore

Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and i
Want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please dont drop me home
Because it's not my home, its their
Home, and Im welcome no more

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I dont care
I dont care, I dont care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought oh god, my chance has come at last
(but then a strange fear gripped me and i
Just couldnt ask)

Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I dont care
I dont care, I dont care
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I havent got one, da ...
Oh, I havent got one

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

Oh, there is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out
There is a light and it never goes out....

Sorry everyone just had to post this one

That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore - The Smiths

Park the car at the side of the road
You should know
Time's tide will smother you
And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
Well, I'm afraid
It doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh

But that joke isn't funny anymore
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...

Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down

It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all

I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine

All this U2 stuff and then now also The Smiths... I hope Robert Smith doesn't read this forum or else he is going to get real mad.  :-D

Yeah, "Wild Irish Rose" is a Bono/Edge song that was written with a very traditional feel. Actually, in that documentary Bono speaks about it and tells where the inspiration for the lyrics came from... It all started with the lines "the city of angels brought a devil out in me". The "city of angels" being L.A.. And the wild irish rose is both a woman and Ireland itself...

Well, I like The Smiths also, even though Morrissey is a bit difficult to bear (but then, Bono can also be completely obnoxious, many times even, although probably in a different way). His lyrics can be so completely miserable... I like those ones you posted but at the same time that "ten-ton truck" part is hard to take seriously. You know, there is no heavenly way to die. Just as there is no heaven after death. But maybe there is some heaven waiting here for us, in this life, and on this earth.  ;)

he should just concentrate on doing better stuff himself - then we wouldn't have to talk about U2 and the smiths and he wouldn't need to get mad.:-D
by the way something that one guy said on that morrissey forum describes it rather well: "Sure, hearing Bob sing about getting an awesome blowjob is mildly entertaining, but..."
yes, 'but' indeed. ;)

Emma
We were together since we were five
She was so pretty
Emma was a star in everyone's eyes
And when she said she'd be a movie queen
Nobody laughed
With her face like an angel
She could be anything

Emmaline
Emma
Emmaline
I'm gonna write your name high on that silver screen
Emmaline
Emma
Emmaline
I'm gonna make you the biggest star this world has ever seen

At seventeen
We were wed
And I worked day and night to earn our daily bread
And every day
Emma would go out searching for that play
That never, ever came her way
And sometimes she come home and she'd be so depressed
I'd hear her crying in the back room and feel so distressed
And I'd remember back when she was five
To the words that used to make Emmaline come alive
It was...

Emma
Emmaline
I'm gonna write your name high on the silver screen
Emmaline
Emma
Emmaline
I'm gonna make you the biggest star this world has ever seen

It was a cold and dark December night
When I opened up the bedroom door
To find her lying
Still and cold upon the bed
A love letter lying on the bedroom floor
It read,
Darling I love you
But I just can't keep on living on dreams no more
I've tried so very hard not to leave you alone
But I just can't keep on trying no more

Emmaline
oooh Emma
Nooo
Emma
Emmaline

"River of Money", by The Go-Betweens

It is neither fair nor reasonable to expect sadness
to confine itself to it's causes. Like a river in flood,
when it subsides and the drowned bodies of
animals have been deposited in the treetops, there is
another kind of damage that takes place beyond the torrent.
At first, it seemed as though she had only left
the room to go into the garden and had been delayed by stray
chickens in the corn. Then he had thought she might
have eloped with the rodeo-boy from the neighbouring
property but it wasn't till one afternoon, when he
had heard guitar playing coming from her room and
had rushed upstairs to confront her and had seen
that it was only the wind in the curtains brushing
against the open strings, that he finally knew she
wasn't coming back. He had dealt with the deluge alright
but the watermark of her leaving was still quite visible.
He had resorted to the compass then, thinking that
geography might rescue him but after one week in the
Victorian Alps he came back north, realising that snow which
he had never seen before, was only frozen water.
I'll take you to Hollywood
I'll take you to Mexico
I'll take you anywhere the
River of Money flows.
I'll take you to Hollywood
I'll take you to Mexico
I'll take you anywhere the
River of Money flows.
But was it really possible for him to cope with the
magnitude of her absence? The snow had failed him.
Bottles had almost emptied themselves without effect.
The television, a samaritan during other tribulations, had
been repossessed. She had left her travelling clock
though thinking it incapable of funcitioning in
another time-zone; so the long vacant days of expensive sunlight
were filled with the sound of her minutes, with the measuring of
her hours.

This one is also an inspiring one,

The Pogues - Love U 'till the End.

I just want to see you
When you're all alone
I just want to catch you if I can
I just want to be there
When the morning light explodes
On your face it radiates
I can't escape
I love you 'till the end

RADIOHEAD - Videotape

When I'm at the pearly gates
This will be on my videotape, my videotape
Mephistopheles is just beneath
and he's reaching up to grab me

This is one for the good days
and i have it all here
In red, blue, green
Red, blue, green

You are my center
When i spin away
Out of control on videotape
On videotape
On videotape
On videotape

This is my way of saying goodbye
Because I can't do it face to face
I'm talking to you before

No matter what happens now
You shouldn't be afraid
Because I know today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen.

Erasure-Piano Song

Never get angry at the stupid people
Though I go crazy at the dullness of my life
Sit and stare into a dusty window
An empty face stares back at me and cries

My vulnerability rushes up to me
And I'm left here,the rebel,
Without a cause,the deeper
I delve into the consciousness
Of me with you

The harder it gets
I need to close my eyes
What hurts me most
I never see your eyes again

Though I get weary,doesn't mean,
That I'm unwilling
My body belies me,I'm of fertile mind
As I grow older the world forgets me
And talks to me as if I'm some kind
Of child

Their insensitivity washes over me
Till I'm left here,the rebel,
Without a cause,the deeper
I delve into the consciousness
Of me and you

The harder it gets
I need to close my eyes
What hurts me most
I'll never see your eyes again

I'll try to forget
I never see your eyes again
What hurts me most
I never see your eyes again

I can't recollect...

Depeche Mode-Enjoy The Silence

Words like violenceBreak the silenceCome crashing inInto my little worldPainful to mePierce right through meCan't you understandOh my little girl
All I ever wantedAll I ever neededIs here in my armsWords are very unnecessaryThey can only do harm
Vows are spokenTo be brokenFeelings are intenseWords are trivialPleasures remainSo does the painWords are meaninglessAnd forgettable
All I ever wantedAll I ever neededIs here in my armsWords are very unnecessaryThey can only do harm
All I ever wantedAll I ever neededIs here in my armsWords are very unnecessaryThey can only do harmAll I ever wantedAll I ever neededIs here in my armsWords are very unnecessaryThey can only do harm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jesus and Mary Chain-Happy When It Rains
Step back and watch the sweet thingBreaking everything she seesShe can take my darkest feelingTear it up till I'm on me kneesPlug into her electric coolWhere things bend and breakAnd shake to the ruleTalking fast couldn't tell me somethingI would shed my skin for youTalking fast on the edge of nothingI would break my back for youDon't know why, don't know whyThings vaporize and rise to the skyAnd we tried so hardAnd we looked so goodAnd we lived our lives in blackBut something about you felt like painYou were my sunny day rainYou were the clouds in the skyYou were the darkest skyBut your lips spoke gold and honeyThat's why I'm happy when it rainsI'm happy when it poursLooking at me enjoying somethingThat feels like feels like painTo my brainAnd if I tell you somethingYou take me back to nothingI'm on the edge of somethingYou take me backAnd I'm happy when it rains
This is virtuoso writing:
Wireless enthusiast intercepts government secret radio band and uncovers secrets and scandals of deceitful type proportions
Aghast goes next door to his neighbor, secretly excited, as aforementioned was a hunter whom radio enthusiast wanted friendship and favor of
A muscular, thick-skinned, slit-eyed neighbor is at the table poisoned just thirty seconds before by parties who knew of wireless operator's forthcoming revelation
A prickly line of sweat covers enthusiast's forehead as the realization hits him that the same government him and his now dead neighbor voted for and backed and talked of on cream porches...
Have tricked him into their war against the people who enthusiast and dead hunter would have wished torture on.
A servant of government walks in and arrests wireless fan in kitchen for murder of his neighbour
