Video file extension-HELP!!!
« on: October 13, 2005, 19:03:34 »
I downloaded a US TV program from a torrent site.  The description said the file was mpeg 2, but the extension on the file is .ts.  Has anyone heard of this extension?  What player plays it, or what codec do I need?  HELP!!!!!

You got me curious. I just found this in a forum:

.ts files (transport stream) usually are derived from digital satellite transmissions, specifically, DVB -- Digital Video Broadcasting -- streams. Doom9 (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/DigiTV/dvb-basics.htm) has a bunch of tools and guides on how to extract the mpeg2 video and the audio streams from the transport stream. On the linked page, you'd start at step 3, since you already have the recording.

The whole thread can be found here:

I wonder why the person didn't just convert this to a more standard format before they shared it. :?

I was wondering the same thing.  There was nothing in the description that indicated what it was, other than mpeg2.  I found this site and downloaded their software (http://www.svcd2dvd.com/HDTV2DVD).  It seemed to be working, but after it converted it to mpg, it crached Windows Media Player 10.  I just downloaded a different version of the show and am dumping the .ts version.  Thanks for the help!

UPDATE:  I may have spoken too soon.  Apparently the software I listed above converts the .ts file to .mpg and to vob files.  The mpg one crashed my media player, but the vob file seemed to work fine.  Now on to my next question.....see the posting in this section regarding sync issues.
