Well, the time is almost here for the FIBA 2010 World Basketball Championship in Turkey — the most important international sporting event of the year.  ;)

Everyone is raving on about how great Spain, the 2006 World Champions, are. But I still think Team USA, who won the 2008 Olympics (and beat Spain twice in the process) — and also won a pretty serious exhibition game against Spain a few days ago — is still a better team. Granted not a single American from the 2008 Olympic team is playing this year and the current team doesn't have the "superstar" status of the previous one, I still think the USA can pull it off.   :smth023

And why not make a little contest about this?  :D  Pick the top 4 finishers, and the winner will receive a promo copy of the "High" CD single and a brand new copy of the "Limited Edition Picture Disc Interview." More info here:

Words!  :smth023  I'll be glued to my TV and/or any other media source during the games!  After all THIS is the sporting event of the year :!:

Need to do a little research before committing to a final four, but Team USA will prevail in the end.

Greece 89, China 81
Lithuania 92, New Zealand 79
Australia 76, Jordan 75
Slovenia 80, Tunisia 56
Russia 75, Puerto Rico 66
Lebanon 81, Canada 71  (sorry, jb)

Cote d'Ivoire 86, Turkey 47
France 72, Spain 66

Brazil 81, Iran 65

Pretty crazy that France knocked off Spain just like that!  It's not the elimination round yet, but this will make their road to the championship game more difficult. Otherwise, no really surprising results today. But it seems Angola hasn't improved one bit in almost 20 years:

USA Dream Team v Angola 1992 Olympics

No doubt the Dream Team was the greatest basketball team ever assembled, but geez...

"Do you get the feeling that Angola's last basket was yesterday?"

There's no stopping Kevin Durant  :rocker

I must admit I'm still bitter when I hear that name.   You see I'm a Portland fan even though I live in Seattle.  Portland foolishly passed him up a few years back and took center Greg Oden, who has been nothing but a bust due to numerous injuries.  Then, the Sonics, Durant's team, move to Oklahoma City.  I relied on having a team here in Seattle so I could take in a few Blazer games a year.  However, I do feel great joy in seeing KD lead Team USA to a win over Slovenia.  What an offensive force  :!:

Yeah, that's pretty tragic that you might have to drive 2-some hours to see your favorite team play now. The last NBA game I attended was Bucks vs. Nuggets, Denver 1991 (think, Dikembe Mutombo).

USA vs. Brazil today. Will this be more of a challenge?  Something tells me Team USA is way better than everyone was giving them credit for, so maybe not...  :?:

Yikes!  Bit of a wake up call for Team USA.  But hey, a win is a win, right?  Not like some other sport that tends to end in a tie.     Coach K. will get them back on track.   :smth023

No kidding. There hasn't been a single tie so far, go figure.

Tuesday, August 31 results:

Russia 72, Cote d'Ivoire 66
New Zealand 108, Libya 76
Puerto Rico 84, China 76
France 68, Canada 63
Turkey 76, Greece 65
Lithuania 76, Spain 73

Well, I somehow knew that Lithuania was going to be good (see my picks), but now I wouldn't be surprised if Spain is long gone by the time the title game rolls around!
