since germany was pretty bad i really hope the U.S. will thump whatever opponents they'll have to face!!!!  :smth023
:smth023

Germany would not have sucked so bad if

was playing.  ;)

And so there were eight:

8 September 2010

Serbia (5-1) vs. Spain (4-2)
Slovenia (5-1) vs. Turkey (6-0)

9 September 2010

USA (6-0) vs. Russia (5-1)
Lithuania (6-0) vs. Argentina (4-2)

The winners of groups with the same color will play each other in the semifinals.

Wednesday, September 8 results:

Serbia 92, Spain 89
Turkey 95, Slovenia 68

Spain has been dethroned!

They can no longer be called "world champions," which annoyed me for the last couple of years because in my book (not that it matters much), I think that title should be passed on to whoever wins the following Olympics — especially when the "world champions" lose to that team twice in that tournament.

Turkey continues to roll...  Will it be Serbia who finally stops the hometown heroes?  :?:

I guess I must say bye to the prize
Strangers passing in the street, by chance two separate glances meet and I am you and what I see is me...

Thursday, September 9 results:

USA 89, Russia 79
Lithuania 104, Argentina 85

Lithuania blows out #1 ranked Argentina. Well, I thought it would be closer than that, but I suspected Lithuania was the better team.

And now the Final Four has been determined:

11 September 2010:

USA (7-0) vs. Lithuania (7-0)
Serbia (6-1) vs. Turkey (7-0)

The winning teams of those games will advance to the gold medal game; the losers to the bronze medal game.

However, there are also "classification games" that will sort out the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th place finishes. Personally, I find these games a bit pointless as the teams have already lost and are essentially fighting it out to be the "least losers."

10 September 2010:

Spain (5-2) vs. Slovenia (4-3)
Argentina (5-2) vs. Russia (4-3)

The 9th+ place teams have already been determined by a special formula used by FIBA:

  9. Brazil (3-3)
10. Australia (3-3)
11. Greece (3-3)
12. New Zealand (3-3)
13. France (3-3)
14. Croatia (2-4)
15. Angola (2-4)
16. China (1-5)

Did not advance beyond pool play:

17. Germany (2-3)
17. Puerto Rico (1-4)
17. Iran (1-4)
17. Lebanon (1-4)
21. Côte d'Ivoire (1-4)
21. Canada (0-5)
21. Jordan (0-5)
21. Tunisia (0-5)

Saturday, September 11 results:

Russia 83, Slovenia 78

This means that Russia secures 7th place, and Slovenia 8th.

Next game today is USA vs. Lithuania, which may pit the two strongest teams of the tournament against each other. I think whoever wins this game will go on to win the gold medal.  :!:

What a day!

Saturday, September 11 results (cont'd):

USA 89, Lithuania 74
Turkey 83, Serbia 82

USA powers past Lithuania, and Turkey knocks off Serbia. The latter was a great game, and I'm glad I decided to watch it. I ended up rooting for Turkey, as they were the underdogs and had the rare chance to host the championship game in their own country. It didn't look like they were going to pull it off either since they were behind virtually all of the game. But with only 4 minutes left, they finally took control. And after some nervewracking back-and-forth action, they managed to take the lead at the very end.

I honestly think Serbia was the better team overall, but they slipped up at the end. So yes, Turkey will have a HUGE home court advantage against the USA, but I don't think it will be enough. The only way they can win is if the Americans have a really off day.

12 September 2010:

"5th place game"

Spain (6-2) vs. Argentina (6-2), 15:00 GMT

Bronze Medal Game

Serbia (6-2) vs. Lithuania (7-1), 19:00 GMT

Gold Medal Game

Turkey (8-0) vs. USA (8-0), 21:30 GMT

Sunday is also a government referendum day in Turkey, so everybody will have the day off. Chances are television viewership of the game will be especially high and will draw a new audience that is generally accustomed to things like soccer... It will be a huge day for Turkey basketball, but again, I don't see them winning. Yet if they do manage to somehow pull it off, I'll have absolutely no hard feelings against them. They really surprised everyone this tournament. I don't think anyone imagined them being in this position!

There's no stopping Kevin Durant  :rocker
No kidding. That dude's got a bright future.

As for the contest, my predictions were the closest to being correct... But as staff members are not eligible to receive prizes, electric_glare officially wins. I'll be getting in contact with him/her soon.
