Title: Cure sound on other people's songs
Post by: Janko on January 23, 2007, 05:08:29
HERE'S AN IDEA:

I JUST BOUGHT "NO EXIT"
IT'S AN 1999 ALBUM BY BLONDIE

ON THIS ALBUM YOU HAVE TWO SONGS THAT ARE 100% CURE RIP OFF:

"DOUBLE TAKE"
and
"NIGHT WIND SENT"

plus

"FORGIVE AND FORGET"

THIS SONG IS ALSO GREAT!!!

OK, IT DOES ALSO SOUND LIKE "SUPERSTITION" ERA SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES...

------------

ANY OTHER SUGESTIONS?

Some of Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" sounds ripped from A Forest.

The Essence with a A Reflected Dream (is this the correct name? not sure). It's not rip off, but it screams out Cure 80-81 influence...

hum hum, The Essence is just an ersatz of cure, un plagiat as we said in french... just like Indochine (a "plagiat" from the music to the clothes and the make up... just pathetic)

THE ESSENCE ARE GREAT BAND
I LOVE THEM
I HOPE THEY'LL MAKE IT THIS TIME AROUND BECAUSE THE CURE ARE NOT AS BIG AS THEY WERE WHEN THE ESSENCE STARTED
BUT THEN THE COMPARSIONS WILL BE LESS POSSIBLE
I WAS JUST LISTENNING TO J.T.D. DISC II AND THOUGHT: "THE CURE WILL NEVER BE THIS GOOD THIS HAPPY AND THIS COOL" AND AS I SEE IT THE ESSENCE IS TRYING TO CAPTURE THAT LATE 80'S CURE SOUND...

about any "sonic lookalikes":

the funeral party   vs.    the opening for the theme music for twin peaks TV series (by angelo badalamenti)

ever since i thought about this i just can't get it off my mind and i just cannot think about/listen to the one without hearing the other... ( :P/ ?)
anyone else haunted by this?

not that it was any sort of rip-off, the similarity actually didn't bother me or annoy me at all. because both are so original in their own way at the same time, they are not dependent on each other at all so it doesn't even sound like the similarity was anyhow intentional anyway.
but i just never before noticed this similarity at all, even thought i had of course heard both numerous & numerous times...

Also, the Italian darkwave band The Frozen Autumn (http://www.thefrozenautumn.com/ - Diego Merletto is a core memeber)sometimes has that heavy "Disintegration" keyboard (and bass) sound...

What a great band!

Re: Twin Peaks: I haven't seen it in years, but "Paris and Rome" (Cranes) kind of reminds me of the theme... The bit in between the verses.

As for the topic at hand: The Chameleons, to a point, but then again, they were pretty much contemporaries. For recent bands, I heard a new single from Guster while flipping through the radio that had Cure-ish guitar. There was a Modest Mouse song that got me thinking "kinda Cure-y", but I couldn't tell you which one. The Moody Blues' "The Voice" kind of reminds me of "A Forest", if memory serves, came shortly thereafter... "Lovelife" (the song) by Lush, a little bit...

Then again, there is always:

:?

Yeah, I totally went there...

Ah, the debate rages on... who stole who's song first, The Cure or New Order?  "The Walk" is quite similar to "Blue Monday" (a completely overrated and intolerable song if you ask me) and New Order stole the chord progression and melody from "Inbetween Days" for a song who's title I can't remember (such is my love for that band ).

Regardless, here is a list of bands with an obvious Cure influence:
Placebo, Deftones, Interpol, Mogwai, late-period Blink 182, Bloc Party, Death Cab for Cutie, Elbow, (the terrible) She Wants Revenge, Antarctica, Nirvana, Unknown Saint, and many many more.  In fact, most popular bands today have claimed some influence from The Cure.

Indeed, listening back to Orestes from Mer De Noms, is it not very similar to To Wish Impossible Things?

I think it was the 'All The Way' a song from 1989's "Technique" that had the resemblence to "Just Like Heaven". The bass line is the same...

It WAS some kind of "response" to "The Walk" ... Sumner (or was it Hook) also stated that he has issues with The Cure because they stole them the German audience!  :D

"Blue Monday" and "The Walk" similarity is mostly due to new keyboard that appeared at the time... And the lines that are the same wouldnt look so alike if there wasnt that instrument... But "Blue Monday" was the first, so...

:-D

I think the deal with The Cure and New Order comes from the fact that The Cure were basically just a better band, in terms of writing material and playing it live. All this "you stole our audience attitude" is complete rubbish. Maybe it had something to do with New Order not producing much worth while after Blue Monday? Lets face it went downhill from there and also their 8 year absense between albums.

Peter Hook isnt the only one to have played bass like that and Bernard Sumner cant sing a note, i think what it comes down to is they are just arrogant enough to think that they were the best.

People complain that The Cure arent as good as they used to be live, well they could be like New Order, Robert reading lyrics off an autocue, and Simon making mistakes every other note. The Cure live now, is better than new order have ever been.... ;)

Sorry, had to get that out of my system, it bugs me when people start on The Cure Vs. New Order....

Just so you know, I was doing so VERY tongue-in-cheek.

It is funny how most of the Cure/N.O. nonsense comes from the N.O. side of the fence. Some die-hard fans... and Peter Hook (hence the photo). I mean, if you have to go so far as to drag your mother into a fight (she supposedly heard a Cure song on the radio, and thought it was a N.O. song, according to P.H.), you've pretty much got nothing. ;)

Frankly, I don't care, either way. I like the Cure loads better than N.O., but that won't stop me from listening to them from time to time. I mean, it's not like this is politics or street gangs...

Try reading old N.O. usenet posts at groups.google.com. Just find the group (alt.music.new-order, I believe) and search for "Cure" within it. You'll end up with a list of similar songs... uh, I mean ones that the Cure ripped off! ;)

Silly.

Yeah I know that you did it very tongue-in-cheek... I always think the "argument" is funny.  I'm not a huge NO fan myself (obviously you could tell that from my last post) but "Age of Consent" is f*cking great.
As far as live performances... The Cure are simply one of the best live bands EVER, regardless if you're a fan or not.

Some months ago, I bought the album 'Public radio' of the Swedish band The Legends. Some tracks sounds like The Cure in the early 80's ('Seventeen seconds' - 'Faith' period), as 'Today', 'Hide away' or 'Air'. The bass lign of this song is so Cure ! Some words about this band  :
"In 2003 and 2004 The Legends received world wide recognition with the hyped debut ”Up against the Legends”. Now The Legends return with an album that is bound to take the world by surprise. ”Public Radio” echoes of the early 80’s and sounds futuristic at the same time. They mix influences from bands like New Order, Felt, Feelies and The Cure with their own pop aesthetics and turn it into something utterly wonderful and new".

BUT IT WASNT ALL THAT "MEANSPIRITED"...

THE FEUD BETWEEN THE CURE, NEW ORDER AND THE SMITHS AND MORRISSEY AND SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES...

ITS JUST AN ELABORATE JOKE, ITS NOTHING "SERIOUS" BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY ALL FANS LIKE THE MUSIC OF THOSE BANDS!

IT WOULD BE RATHER UNBELIVABLE TO LIKE THE CURE AND NOT TO LIKE NEW ORDER OR MORRIESSEY OR...

ITS JUST THE "FRUSTRATIONS WITH LITTLE DIFFERENCES"

eh... i just can't stand morrissey... neither i never really liked new order that much - but let's talk about joy division and that's totally different. (with new order, i blame it mostly on b. sumner, i can't stand his squeeking that some people call "singing". he totally ruins everything that would be good in that band! : :?).
and to be totally honest, i never really was that huge siouxsie fan either. i definitely don't own all of their records, siouxsie rarely makes it to my turn-table/cd-player...

and yet, i DO like to call myself a rather big cure fan...  :-D

Another in perfect agreement. Well, semi-perfect. I like some N.O., but I don't know if I'd consider myself a fan. One or two songs here and there... Can't say I'm a Morissey fan, and for the longest time couldn't stand the Smiths, either. However, I've softened a bit on that last part, as about half of "Meat Is Murder" isn't half bad... "What She Said", "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore", even "How Soon Is Now?" - which is weird, as it's omnipresence should have made me sick of it a long time ago.

I mean, I like a lot of stuff, but precious little (next to nil) of the artists that folks sometimes associate with the Cure / Cure-fans. I listen to a scattered mix of things.

Not to say that they're all bad. Just not my taste. No strong feelings this way or that, really.

INTERESTING...

I GUESS MY TASTE IS A BIT DIFFERENT, BECAUSE I LOVE ALL THAT BANDS AND HAVE ALL THIER STUFF IN MY COLLECTION (including SATB bootlegs)...

:rocker

MORRISSEY'S - "YOU ARE THE QUARRY" AND NEW ORDERS - "WAITING FOR THE SIRENS CALL" (BOTH IN 2004 I THINK) WERE MUSICALLY BY FAR BETTER THAN THE CURE'S "THE CURE"...

:smth023

I THINK THAT NEW ORDER AND MORRISSEY MATURED A BIT BETTER FOR NOW!

THE CURE STILL DOESNT HAVE NEW SOUND DEFINED...

Check out the guitar line on He Knows The Sun (drum line taken directly off 17 seconds)
Is this how Inbetween Days or Just Like Heaven would have sounded all those years ago??

The rest of it (well, all of it) is a bit feeble though. Sort of sugary synth pop & the vocal style sound familiar, but I can't quite place it :?

I can't say that I really liked "The Weirdness", but the couple of newer songs that they played off of that, and the Stooges reunion tracks from Skull Ring sounded way better live. The highlight for me was that they played nearly all of Fun House, with the original sax player joining them.

Pretty cool stuff.

He also invited everyone onstage for "No Fun", and security freaked. They could hold off one or two people, but not sixty (at least). I was too far back to make it up there.  :(

the Cure sound in New Order is so dated + dead boring to be honest... as everyone knows without Joy Division The Cure would have never went into a certain direction. Both great bands with a distinctive sound - and to all those experts, the Baywatch appearance was a taking the piss out thing for BBC Top Of The Pops, shows they don't take themselves serious at all. brilliant band - brilliant attitude!
can't really see that Indochine/Cure thing - they were both massive in the 80es in France, of course + Indo has even covered Just Like Heaven, the comment on the band here seems to be from very far...
The Mission-wise, hehe good old Wayne (can't wait for the new album, should be excellent), if it comes to The Cure sounds, try to listen to 'Melt' (Evangeline MCD or Aura Delight CD), quite a bit 'Apart' influenced.

New Order stole the chord progression and melody from "Inbetween Days" for a song who's title I can't remember (such is my love for that band ).

The song you're thinking of is Dreams Never End, and I've just found out that it's from an album (Movement) which was released four years before The Head on The Door, where, as far as I know, In Between Days made its first appearance...

Regarding the whole New Order vs. The Cure controversy...

The songs 'This Time of Night' and 'Sunrise', both from New Order´s 'Low-Life' album (released in 1985, and a good record, by the way) borrow freely from The Cure´s 'A Forest'... One of them uses a keyboard intro that is clearly reminiscent of the intro to 'A Forest', and the other one is based on a (keyboard) bassline that immediately recalls the most famous of Simon Gallup's basslines.

Check them out and tell me I´m wrong!   ;)

Hehe, you want a tip of a band which sounds cure-y? The swedish band Strip Music. They've made two really great albums, so check them out. If only for one song, "Lucy" is the most cure-y song of them all. They've admitted that they wanted to do something which sounded like a "Disintegration" track, and that they might as well do it full out (or what you call it...) instead of holding back on it.

This also sounds kind of Cure-y I think, and it's a great song. It's Nick Cave on vocals, pre-Birthday Party.

Opeth are not the kind of band that I would think are influenced by The Cure in general, but they do have one particular song that has something of The Cure about it. And it happens to be one of their most accomplished and applauded songs: 'Face of Melinda'.

Here is the You Tube link for a live version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAStBwVTAfg

Starting at 2:12, there is a moody melodic descending guitar motive that recurs over the first part of the song and that has something about it that recalls the main guitar (5-string bass?) melody in 'The Same Deep Water as You'...
It's not a rip-off, but both melodies could easily have been written by the same band (Cureth? Opure?  :-D )

If you like The Cure's sound, you might want to check out bands like "The Sound", "And Also The Trees", or some early Colin Newman (from "Wire"...also a good band)

"The Sound" are really one of the most forgotten great bands of new wave, and please don't confuse them with "The Sounds".  ;)

Another underrated band, still existing, are Human television. Maybe not obviously sounding like the Cure (especially the singer sounds completely different than Robert), but the overall mood and instrumentation is very 1985-87 Cure-ish. I love that band!

Well, maybe. I checked parts of the 4 songs displayed there and there might be something of the Cure in the guitars, at least in a couple of them. But it probably reminds me more of 80's indie guitar pop in general... Maybe Go-Betweens or something like that?
Title: Re: Cure sound on other people's songs
Post by: Lostflowerboy on July 23, 2008, 14:32:51
Yes, they definitely have that 80ies Indie-touch, Go-betweens fits well also in my oppinion. I'd also say, they are not too far away from Orange juice (former band of Edwyn Collins).

Typical Cure moments for me are the guitars that fade in at 0:48 in "In front of yourhouse", that chime at 1:19 in "I laughed" and the whole instrumentation and melody of "I forgot" (just listen to the intro!)
Some songs on their album also have a Cure-like structure, e.g. a 3 minute intro that slowly builds up before the vocals start and a lack of the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus structure.
Highly recommended. ;)

Well one just has to listen to the Wish and Bloodflowers instrumental demos (Lost Wishes/Lost Flowers) to realize that. Seriously when I first heard those tracks I was like, Wow this sounds like alot of the stuff that Mogwai does, Like almost creepy similar. In fact one time I was listening to a song on Young Team and started singing Pictures of You at the same time and it matched up really well

I think that The Cult's "Nirvana", from 1985, has a basic chord sequence that resembles "A Short Term Effect":

not bad, but maybe a bit trendy/teenage-oriented for me.but thanks for the tip, i didn't really know them before.
anyway, to me they sound a bit like some kind of a teenage-oriented/"blink182-ish" version of The National:

http://www.myspace.com/thenational

(perhaps it's because of brooklyn NY - perhaps it's a common trend there... ;)

which to me sounds like... i don't know, a combination of and also the trees and bruce springsteen (in a good way). anyway, to my ears the national has more musical depth/less trendy "poppyness".
i think there's some "melancholic mellow quality" in their sound that make them somehow "cure-ish" (although at the same time they hardly sound like each other at all).

Take a listen to the brillant Portishead album "Third". I think you can hear some The Cure influence (Pornography area) on some tracks ... especially in the opener "Silence". By the way it's the best Portishead album so far.

Well, what about "Dummy"!? I think that one has greater songs... It also was more important - in terms of overall impact - when it came out.

Of course "Dummy" is a milestone. My comment regarding "Third" means only the parallels between Portishead and The Cure. "Third" is so different from all other Portishead albums, isn't it?

Great band, like you said the cure-factor comes more from the overall atmosphere of their work. I saw them live some months ago, great concert, maybe my second favourite band for the moment.

EKV were a band from Serbia. Most popular in the late 80's.
Their song 7 Dana (Seven Days) is quite similar to A Night Like This.

i see. but i think the conversations are so closely related that it would be easier for people to find this thread/these threads if it was put into same thread, under same discussion. when people start talking about cure sound they soon start talking about riffs and structures too and then we're in the same area and it will be hard to know which thread would be the "right" one. that is/was my point.

In this I agree with Janko, I think this topic refers to songs from other artists similar to Cure songs (and because of this I think the thread title can be labeled as "Songs that are similar to The Cure songs" instead "Cure Inspired Songs").

However, the thread you mention, baby, should be merged with this one, I think.

Anyway, this discussion belongs to the cure things section, this is not off-topic right?

Here are two links to Last.fm of tracks that I feel have the same kind of sound as The Cure (with a little more electronics thrown in for a more contemporary sound).
Listen to the tracks from start to finish (as the second one takes a while to get where it's going).

Manual - Clear Skies Above The Coastline Cathedral

Syntaks - Stars Fell On The Shore

Enjoy.

A hugely famous song in Russia, more or less a reworking of In Your House off Seventeen Seconds. Viktor Tsoi was a major Curehead.

Title: Re: Cure sound on other people's songs
Post by: nerdiee on June 03, 2023, 18:10:24
uhm.. if you decide to listen to Russian rock and post-punk of the 90s, you will definitely stumble upon  the cure XD
there is enough plagiarism there, but the main groups that were very inspired by The Cure - "Агата Кристи" and "Кино"
the first group decided to openly copy the"image" of "Disintegration" and even stole a guitar break of "fascination street" for some song .. I don't remember which one

and even in their youth,"Agatha Christie" frontmen tried to look like Robert Smith - but thin Robert Smith ahah
but they didn't put on makeup or do crazy hairstyles, they just wimps
and at the expense of group"Кино", their soloist and frontman, Viktor Tsoi, was clearly inspired by the album "seventeen seconds" ... and this is sooooo heard and seen, so much so that it can be declared plagiarism

oh, another interesting thing, we also have a Russian version of "Kyoto song"
it was "quailed" by the group "АлисА" and called the "shadow theater" ... but they made a reference to the original, so everything is in order

in short, as you can see, we in Russia love The Cure very much XD
