Ive been pretty interested in learning about the different kinds of electric guitars and I'm curious as to what guitars The Cure have used on their tours and albums.

Well, according to producer Mike Hedges ( full and very interesting interview here: http://www.picturesofyou.us/04/04-12--SOS-UK-Mike%20Hedges%20A%20Forest.htm ), for the 17 Seconds sessions "Robert got a better guitar amp and a better guitar — I think he changed to a Fender Jazzmaster — and he also had the Woolworths Top Twenty guitar that he'd used on the first album".

Well, on http://thecure.8m.com/info.html there's a huge FAQ about the Cure where (on Q7.17) they supposedly mention all the equipment group members have used. Unfortunately they don't specify which guitars were used in specific album sessions and tours...

So, the info is this one:

Robert:

Gibson Chet Atkins guitar

National electric guitars

Fender Jazzmaster guitar

Woolworth's Top 20 guitar

Ovation 6-string acoustic guitar

Ovation 12-string acoustic guitar

1962 Fender Bass VI

Roland Jazz Chorus 120 amp

Peavey amps

Boss pedals - chorus, delay, flange, phaser, and overdrive

Dunlop Crybaby Wah-Wah pedal

Perry:

1963 Fender Bass VI guitar

Gibson ES-335 guitar

Ovation 12-string acoustic guitar

Gibson Chet Atkins guitar

Gibson Les Paul guitar

Boss pedals - chorus, delay, flange, eq, and overdrive

Dunlop Crybaby Wah-Wah pedal

Porl:

1959 Fender Telecaster guitar

Gibson ES-175 (fender neck) guitar

Gibson ES-345 guitar

Gibson Les Paul guitar

Boss and T.C. Electronic flangers

Electro-Harmonix Memory Man delay

Dunlop Rotovibe

On Faith it was already Fender Bass VI and Fender Precision Bass.

On Pornography Simon used Rickenbacker 4003...

On The Top Robert had his Vox Teardrop I think, and Ovation Breadwinner ??

THOTD - Robert started to use acoustic guitar. Gibson Chet Atkins Elelctric nylon string and Ovation Standard Balladeer 12-strings. And I dont know but I think that Simon used Music Man Stingray Bass too... and Porl had Fender Bass VI, Fender Telecaster, Gibson ES 335...

Wish - Porl used Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, Hopf Saturn and Simon started to use Gibson EB-2 and his Dick Knight Custom Bass which made him a man with name Dick Knight (I dont know who is it)... and Robert started to used Gretsh Tennessee Rose and black Gibson I think that it is ES 335 ?? and Perry - Fender Bass VI, Gibson ES 335...

WMS - all guitars on Wish album... Simon played in This Is A Lie on Ovation Standard Balladeer and he started to use his beautiful Fender Thunderbird.

Bloodflowers - Robert used Gretsch Silver Falcon, Mosrite Ventures and I think that he started to use Guild 12- strings acoustic guitar...

The Cure - here Robert started to use his Schecter Ultracure which he gave to make on this album and Curiosa tour...

new album - Prol is back and he use Shecter Corsair with his beautiful paints, Simon used Schecter Ultra Bass too...

http://www.impressionofsounds.com/stories/16.html

'sound&vision' magazine had an extensive article in 1996 about the cure in studio during WMS.

that's interesting, thanks for the link.

by the way i remember an back issue of MIX magazine from 2000 that had an article about the band's dream tour gear, written from the sound engineer's point of view. i can't remember how in-depth it was.
also in 2000, there was a lengthy cover story/interview with robert  in guitar player magazine.
perhaps i could find these and put up scans, if anyone is interested.

*edit: just noticed that the link to musicfanclubs/"garden tools" above already featured that guitar player article in full.

Not sure if this is technically the right place to post this, but it's on a related theme. This is an article from recording magazine Sound on Sound about the recording of "A Forest". Lots of geeky technical information about microphones used, guitars, amps and the recording tricks used on "Seventeen Seconds" generally. An interesting read for those interested in these things.

And yes, I am a geek.

It's actually the same article as in http://www.picturesofyou.us/04/04-12--SOS-UK-Mike%20Hedges%20A%20Forest.htm, which I have already posted here (second message in this thread).
