Title: The Cure loves christmas!!
Post by: corrosiveheadpollution on February 28, 2008, 00:46:49
Has anyone else besides me noticed that Robert Smith makes a lot of references to Christmas or December in his songs?  Let's Go To Bed "laughing at the christmas light you remember from december".  Last Dance "walking through walls in the
heart of december.....christmas falls late now flatter and colder".  Also on the new album there is supposed to be a song called "Christmas Without You".  There are a few other songs as well with similar references but i can't think of them off the top of my head right now.

maybe it's because it is one of the very few times Robert can get together with his family, to relax and enjoy their company, to hug the ones he loves...

That very well could be the reason.  either way it's suhh-weet! he can sing about Christmas all he wants.

..... oh and also in the song SNAKEPIT, "Well we're a mile under the ground
And I'm thinking that it's Christmas"

Other Voices: " come around at Christmas
I really have to see you..."

See The Children " I am a supermarket Santa
underneath the Christmas tree..."

Strange Attraction: "I answered her
a Christmas card in sepia..."

:P :P :P

Thank you both

Sadly both have been "inactive" for years.  :(

But it is true, as Lol mentions in his book: Robert may have disliked his "Catholic upbringing", but he still loves Christmas very much!  :o

The band also covered "Merry Xmas everybody" (by Slade) towards the end of their 1987 tour:

I wonder why...

Indeed the Cure (or RS) have mentioned Christmas quite a lot in the lyrics, this article here mentions it too:

https://post-punk.com/christmas-songs-for-goths/

QuoteRobert Smith and his band The Cure are noted for their love of Christmas and use the holiday as a metaphor in songs like "Other Voices," "Hey You!," "Last Dance," and "The Snakepit," but only one studio recording directly refers to celebrating the holiday in such a festive manner enough to be called a Christmas song – 1982's "Let's Go To Bed".
