Does this seem odd ?, or maybe just obvious ?
The official Cure website has 2 new photos in the photo gallery section:
http://www.thecure.com/about/
If you click on the 2 new photos the caption under them says "Robert Japan - Fuji".
Before I knew about those 2 photos I personally thought it was odd the way Robert mentioned Japan in the recent RAG MAGAZINE interview.
Robert was talking about something like how he sees a lot of places with The Cure and he said something like "we go to America and Japan", and I thought it was really odd of him to cite Japan because they haven't been to Japan since 1984".
So I figured that Robert's got Japan on the mind,
now these 2 new photos have appeared....
yeah would seem that way, maybe they will get a show this year. quite accurate prediction too
the pictures are renamed as " Cure Fuji Festival" , it seems like an ad for the fuji festival...
or the pictures to be utilized for a "news"
the Fuji is from 07/27 to 07/29 and there are strong rumors...they'll play there...
but as always, until it's confirmed on The Cure site...that's just "rumor"
Seems believable, but I still have doubts much will be happening this year Cure-wise. :?
Perhaps this rumor can be possible !!!
Just to play some new song live before making big show over the world !!!
maybe this is really true,
because robert has a sense for japan ...
1984 vhs - cure in japan
2000 - coming up as an extra track bloodflowers/japan release
1985 .. kyoto song ... after this song the kyoto protokoll is named.....
Big In Japan,at last!
If The Cure are playing here in Australia in early August as Robert's post seems to indicate I'd say it's quite possible they will play the annual "Spleandour In The Grass" Festival in Byron Bay which is on August 4th - 5th :
http://www.splendourinthegrass.com/
Seems confirmed the perfomance of The Cure for the Fuji Festival this year:

You guys must all be old or something, because I don't know a damn thing about Tom Waits.
I've only heard the name before, nothing more. :?
Didn't they do some press stop in Japan in '87 for the release of KMKMKM? I think I have a TV interview as filler on some DVD somewhere.
Must have stung something awful when they went back to Japan -- and didn't play a show!
Seriously, though, it's cool that they are finally going back. To play.

yes they did several TV interviews in japan in may 1987, at least three different ones i know about.
the one found as a filler at the end of the toronto '96 dvd is this one:

these japanese interviews are pretty strange because the interviewers very pretty clueless about the cure and mostly didn't really know what to say/ask...

Christ....I hope that was only done because it was:
a) A festival
b) strict 90 minute curfew
That represents just about every song I do NOT want to hear anymore (except for maybe Out of This World).

I like the idea of One Hundread Years closing the set. However, I don't see how it really fits when everything leading up to it is pop. No new songs, nothing old that hasn't been played in a while. What a waste of something that could've been quite special for a lot of Cure fans that hadn't seen the band in so many years.

reminds me of when NIN was supporting guns'n'roses' european tour sometime way back. i heard that gnr fans booed them off almost every night :smth011 but i also know people who followed the tour only to see NIN and always left right after them.
Kind of reminds me of 2 summers ago when I was living in Ireland. I lived right next to Marlay Park, and Coldplay was playing there with Interpol as the opener. I saw Interpol and attempted to leave. It took me nearly 20 minutes just to leave. I think I was the only one leaving- security was giving me a hell of a time!

According to my mp3 player, that setlist is only 56 minutes long. The report that posted it said they were on stage nearly 2 hours. Conclusion, there are a lot more non-greatest hit songs that he didn't bother to mention.

I think you guys should calm down a bit :)
Please notice two facts here
1) They didnt play in Japan since more than 20 years
2) They played in a festival, not in a Cure show alone. Commercial songs are expected. And let me tell you, for people who didnt see the band in such a long time, I am sure they are more than happy. Trust me, I would be the same happy if they played wathever they want in Peru cos we never saw them here :).
I guess for US and europeans fans, the feelings must be mixed -The Cure always play there-, and because of that, I am sure the setlist in such places might be different. Let's wait a bit. I hope we can get a bootleg of this soon ;)
Where is Druide?

2nd Encore: A Forest, Boys Don't Cry

Well, that's a little better. Not much, and only for being longer.
Ok, that's better. Basically the same as Miami '07 with a few variations. And they played The Kiss. :rocker
But I hope they mix it up more in the future!

I was really hoping for some new material. After all, aren't they touring to promote and eventually support a new album?
It is a festival set, and yes, the setlist is bound to be different when they hit the Euro/US legs. Id be stoked with that setlist, I dont care, Jesus, just be thankful they're still touring.

no. just like someone already said in this thread (i think), they aren't touring yet and they surely have no album to promote yet - this was
only a summer festival gig. i wasn't expecting any new songs songs either. i'm glad the setlist was actually a bit better than the first draft although i was hoping for some surprises (i mean some old songs). a fool's hope, of course.
Tape (intro), Open, Fascination Street, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Kyoto Song, Hot Hot Hot, alt.end, The Walk, The End of the World, Lovesong, Pictures of You, Lullaby, Inbetween Days, Friday I'm In Love, Just Like Heaven, If Only Tonight We Could Sleep, The Kiss, Shake Dog Shake, Never Enough, Wrong Number, One Hundred Years, End
1st Encore: Let's Go To Bed, Close To Me, Why Can't I Be You?
2nd Encore: A Forest, Boys Don't Cry

The list has been corrected.
It's a lot better than the partial list...
This is a regular festival set
definately better, would still have liked some new songs though :!:
Much obliged Carnage, its hardly a template of whats to come, but I'll take that any day for a Fest set, fricken awesome!! :smth023
well a little better. tape and open = very good :D
and Kyoto Song? i didn't expect this song when was the last time they played it?
it .was not in 2005 no?
i hope that on monday this fest will be better ;;
now, I am really confused, and I hope Druide will soon confirm the setlist, as I really do not know what to think about it...
I was pleasantly surprised to see Kyoto Song too.
I'm not going to take any sets too seriously until the band hits Perth.
Great to see Kyoto Song.
Was played 6 times back at the 1998 festivals and before then was back in 1989.
Was the Intro:Tape just the short 20 second intro like at the 2005 shows & Royal ALbert Hall in 2006 or did it go for the full 3 minutes like on the Wish Tour ?

So it was a festival gig. That means they can't play new stuff? :? What about the 1995 Festivals and early 1996 festivals? They played Want, Jupiter Crash, and Mint Car at every gig. I think a festival would have been the perfect place to debut at least one new song. Surely they have a single in mind, one that would have fit in nicely with this singles driven set.
Setlist isnt that bad, dont forget, it wasnt a Cure event so theyve got to play to people who might not be there just for them.
Im surpised they didnt play any new songs, it wouldve been good to hear something. I guess they will when they do proper Cure shows in the next few weeks.
Its interesting reading everyones comments about the setlist being predictable, to be fair they vary it more than they used to (look at the Kissing Tour - same set nearly every night) and they vary their setlists more than any other band i can think of, just look at Depeche Mode, it must be quite disapointing knowing that they'll play the same set every night.
The thing is, theyre still here, and im just grateful for that, if nothing else.
and not to forget it was their first appearance in japan since 1984. they could have played "jingle bells" and the fans there were also happy i think... ;)
setlist
open, fascination, from the edge, kyoto song, hot, alt end, walk, the end of the world, love song, picture of you, lullaby, inbetween days, friday, just like heaven, if only tonight, kiss, shake, never enough, wrong number, 100 years, end.
E1 lets go to bed, close to me, wciby
E2 forest, boys don t cry
Total Time 138 min
So a show of shit !!!! sorry but i m thinking that !!! Miami 2...
Cure had played in front about 30000 or 40000 japaneses...they like very much only the pop songs, but when 100 years arrived, many people get out... many plane and money for THAT !!!!! not good....sorry im very disapointed in this time !!!
I hope the best for HongKong and Singapore....
See you childs

Heck, I think I might have been happy if they played Jingle Bells. At least they'd be playing something different for once.
But this setlist has gotten better with every update. Maybe I should hold my tongue the next time around. Nice to see Kyoto Song in there â€" I wonder what it sounded like!

sure they did, but 95/96 was over ten years ago. there's a big difference between the cure then and the cure now, to me.
and hasn't predictability been like their second nature in the last few years? (ever since the dream tour, how many times have they really really surprised us?)
@druide: sorry to hear that! i hope you enjoyed rest of "my homeland" anyway... sushi was good yes? ;)

i must be the only person who would be happy seeing a pop heavy cure show. then again i'd still want a few of the "classic" cure songs

But they were playing it in Japan!
I think it proves that they actually *did* put a little thought into the setlist after all.
I tend to agree with the reviewer on COF who pointed out that most of those standard songs haven't been played in that country ever. Surely if you've never seen The Cure before, you'd be happy with that set, wouldn't you?
Yes I'm sure. :rocker:
I don't know how people got the impression they were going to play the first two Join The Dots cds as their basic set. I'd love if they did that. But let's face it, most of the audience probably (not only a Japanese one) would be wondering what is going on.

OK guys, nice to all meet you there, but I just decided to register to try to stop all the anger :smth076 regarding the setlist.
I posted that quick review on COF on my way back to Tokyo yesterday. I have been living here for the last 5 years.
The main thing about the show in Fuji Rock is that : Japan is still an island!! And foreigners have no clue of what Japanese music market is all about...
The best example is KARAOKE. This is still the main entertainement here, with 8 floors'buildings of Karaoke rooms in virtualy every streets in Tokyo. You can find about 100.000 foreign songs, mainly in english, all the time. But... no CURE songs ever...!!!!
In Japan, I met people who never heard about Mickael Jackson :o; Many don't know that YMCA is an American song, since a cover had been made by a japanese singer in the 80s ???... The Charts are still dictated by Japanese Boys Bands :smth087...
So, do you really think that CURE can show up after 23 years and play "FAITH", in front of a crowd that hardly know anything about them but the "Greatest Hits"??
That would have been an artistic and image suicide... Please remember that Fuji Rock was NOT a specific CURE show.
During "From the Edge", I started notice parts of the audience staring at each other, like "what's happening with that endless song...?" And yes I saw a girl sleeping during "100 Years"... no big deal, Japanese people keep on sleeping everywhere, anytime, whenever possible, specially in Tokyo :smth015 Kind of a cultural thing.
That said, the show what the best it could have been in that circonstances. The popsongs rocked the crowd :smth041, and the trilogy "Inbetween Days, Friday I'm In Love, Just Like Heaven" drove everybody crazy!! On the other hands, they managed to show an heavier side at the end of the main set that worked perfectly. The cameramen where charmed by Porl guitar and kept focus on him... forgetting Simon on the other hand :(
So please, all readers and Cure fans, please try not to forget about the "cultural" aspects of the following asian shows. They are not playing in Europe or America, and expectations are different in this corner of the world.
Love the CURE!!!

yes, look at the last smiley in my post please...
(i was just thinking, what
if the cure ever came to play again in finland, what would they - or better to say, what
could they play here? people don't know their newer stuff, people hardly remember them at all here... i can't even remember when i heard a cure song in radio here. the last time they really got radio play must have been around the wish tour(?). so... greatest hits is would be, i suppose.)
Well, people I'll get a little bored by discussing all the new development trends in Roberts mind!! Of course, everybody is looking for the new CURE - CD and HIT (not commercially at all!!) But this band is now existing for nearly 30 years - be thankfull for every new cd or song they perform... If it's not you style, you can either post a comment her or look for the next performance..

and theyve got back the best intro to a concert ever - Tape 8)
excellent, Porl really kicks ass on this version :rocker
thanks for the link, well, totally hate the version - I'd rather prefer them not to touch the synthsongs... it sounds like some dodgy funk band trying to cover the song... give me synth give me synth give me synth... :smth100

I just read from a Sisters trader that there is rumours of a stolen sbd recording of this show.
Anyone heard anything?
I read somewhere that the sound guy records all of the shows [at least the Australian shows] and gives the CD to Robert to he can critique it later on..
oh to get our hands on those CDs.... sigh.....
Robert: if you're reading this, perhaps you can upload the shows for us.. or just drop the CDs over to my place... any time mate, any time...
