The Cure's Robert Smith has responded to an article which claimed he had complained of the effects that free music downloads are having on his income.

The reference to Smith was made in an article which attacked musicians' attitudes towards the recession and their subsequent loss of income.

Mark Beaumont of the Guardian, wrote: "Over the past few months I've gritted my teeth as Robert Smith complained about the detrimental effects of downloading and the economic downturn on his income."

Smith responded to the comments via the bands official web site, in which he wrote: "Could you show me one single instance when I complained about the economic downturn on my income?
I have never complained about anything of the ******* sort!"

To further clarify his position on free music downloads, Smith also posted a link to his online blog in which he explains exactly where he stands on the issue.

"If you would bother reading what I actually think about free music then maybe you wouldn't write this kind of s*** about me," he added.

The Cure recently won the NME's Godlike genius award and released a new DVD, 'Trilogy - live in Berlin'.
