Many MPEG files can be put to DVD without any re-encoding. You just have to be careful.
Especially Nero should be avoided, a terrible "dvd authoring" tool.

I used to encode some of my lossy files to MPEG, but anymore I just try to find a better copy of a video if I really want it on DVD.
I'm always being asked how to encode an .avi movie to dvd with subtitles since
Nero doesn´t encode subtitles. Do you know how to do it? I also used to shrink dvd's with Nero recode but not anymore, a terrible mistake to use it.

Life's too short to listen to lossy music

I always use Cinema Craft Encoder SP 2.70 to encode AVI to MPEG-2. As far as I'm concerned nothing can beat it.

As for subtitles, I would add those at the actual DVD authoring stage. I know that Ulead DVD Workshop 2 can do it (seems pretty easy), but I've never actually done any projects with subtitles.

Adding the subtitles during authoring is obviously better than encoding them directly into the MPEG, as this leaves the option of turning them on and off.

If you need help finding the right versions of these programs, let me know.
