Title: Guitars & instruments used at RAH
Post by: Yves28 on April 06, 2006, 08:42:55
I was wondering which instruments were used by The Cure at Royal Albert Hall last Saturday. I listed the one I remember, maybe you could complete the list.

Robert is stuck to his Schetcter's guitars:
- the one with the "free Memphis three" sticker (mostly used)
- the 696 ? VI string bass ?, don?t know if it?s a really 6-string bass or a guitar made to sound like i twas
- his 12 string acoustic Guild that survived 2005 and the all electric shows
- and a Gibson acoustic with nylon strings for The Blood

Simon had as far as I saw 2 Thunderbird basses:
- the one with DIRT and playboy rabbit stickers
- another one with another tuning probably he played during The Kiss (er during this song he rather brutalized his bass ?)

Jason behind his drum set, I?m not specialist of drums, don?t know the type.

Finally Porl played a lot of different guitars.
I counted two or three acoustic guitars:
- the acoustic with nylon strings for The Blood (a Gibson one ?)
- another acoustic (or the same ? don?t know) for Shake Dog Shake
- a Sunburst one for If only tonight we could sleep
And then the electric ones:
- two white guitars with drawings on it, Porl probably draw these drawings himself. Do someone know the model of these guitars ? It looked like Gibson ES335 or hollow body ones but I didn?t recognize them
- a 12 stings electric guitar used for the synth melody in Play for today and maybe also for Just like heaven (actually the same guitar as on the picture of Porl on the opening page of imaginarylemurs.com)
- a Schecter Hellcat in Sunburst colours for the Three Imaginary Boys and the BDC/A Forest encores

Do you remember other guitars played that night ?

as far as i can tell, robert's 696 schecter is modified to a bass VI.  so, robert wan't playing his new signature acoustic?

if porl was playing an acoustic on shake dog shake i'd say it was different then his other one as shake dog shake is in a wierd tuning.  porl's white guitars w/ drawings are gibson es-335.  they don't come in white or with the art.  so, custom job.  the body of porl's 12-string looks like it might be a schecter, although the pearl inlay looks like gibson.  i can'treally se the headstock thatwell.  porls does sport a lot of gibsons.  i'll look further into this one.

how about amps?

i'm looking into effects.

From where I was (behind the soundboard) I was unable to see the effects.

And the amps ... I'd say that were same as during summer 2005. For Porl, two sets of amps + one in the middle. Simon: same as alwys with the flag of his favourite football team (what is this team ? forgot ...). And Robert ... really don't know.

Simon's team is Reading Football Club..

They won their division title that day and were promoted to the English Premiership...

I wasn't at the RAH, but here is my guess...

The white one with Voodoo Skulls / Ace of Spade artwork isn't a Gibson ES-335. It's a Schecter Corsair (Porl used a sunburst one extensively during the 2005 summer festivals). From the pictures I've seen of this concert, he had 2 white ones and the sunburst mentionned. (the peghead shape of the Schecter is quite recognisable by its "V" shape). ***Edit : the sunburst Corsair was also played that evening... just saw pictures of it.

As for his acoustics, the Sunburst one is a Gibson New-Yorker (quite rare to see these), the one he played on "the Blood" might be a Gibson Chet Atkins CE (at least, that's what he was using last summer).

The black & white 12-string is a Schecter Ultra III, but it's not marketed as far as I know (might be a custom made one)...

As for amps, Porl uses 2 Fender Deluxe Reverb fitted with extra cabinets (seemingly Fender 1x12 cabinets). This configuration is quite new. Last summer he played without the extra cabs. The Fender Twin Reverb used last summer was absent... He now uses the same amp as Robert's one (is it an acoustic amp ? I can't seem to figure out what this amp is) placed in the middle of the both Fenders in a titled position.

Hope this helps...

Been watching the pictures closely...

Porl's amp in tilted position is a Mesa Boogie Mark IV. The cabinets under the Fenders are not Fenders as thought earlier. They might well be Mesa Engineering as well.

Can't identify Robert's amp (I mean, not the Orange, the other). No clue.
