Title: The Cure song similar to a New Order song
Post by: dsanchez on January 22, 2009, 01:42:48
Now that we came with all this New Order discussion in the "Something else" board, I just remember many years ago reading somewhere that New Order were complaining that The Cure copied one of their songs. However, I don't remember which Cure and NO songs were in the polemic. Anyone remember?

'blue monday' vs. 'the walk'. i think that's the famous one.

there's some thread about this subject on neworderonline (http://www.neworderonline.com/Forums/MessageList.aspx?ThreadID=40872)

where someone listed these:

The Cure's rip off's:
Warsaw vs Killing an Arab (the main riff ought to stand out instantly)
Atrocity Exhibition vs Pornography (tribal drums, chaotic guitar)
Dreams Never End vs In Between Days (this is perhaps the clearest one)
Blue Monday vs The Walk (released same year)
I Remember Nothing vs. Disintegration (same synth and broken glass effects!)

New Order's rip off's (they are entitled by this point!):
A Forest vs This Time of Night and Crystal (that well known bass line which is now practically public domain)
Just Like Heaven vs All the Way (this is a very commonly cited one)

use your own judgement.
personally, i think comparisons like 'crystal' vs. 'a forest' are prime examples that in the field of popular music (where people are bound to copy each other to certain extent all the time) what matters is not where your material came/whetehr there's some other song out there that uses the same ideas but how you use the material.
i mean 'crystal' displays how it's very easy to take the same basic material as in 'a forest' and instead of coming up with something as tight as 'a forest'just turn it into a generic pop/rock/whatever song that doesn't really make much difference.

about that thread, i just skimmed through it quickly, maybe i missed some song couples listed. just gave it a quick look only because i didn't feel like starting my day with reading crap comments like:

"JD supported The Cure once or twice, (I think, Canterbury, once, 1979),so they aint exactly strangers"

im sorry did you just say that JD supported The Cure... i need some evidence on that. thats like Kraftwerk opening up for culture club.

There was also massive similarities between New Order - The Village, and The Cure - Pictures Of You.

I'm a huge New order fan, much more so than a cure one, and I know for a fact there was controversy over In Between Days and Dreams Never End. The similarity is there, Simon also used the same bass as Hooky, and adapted the playing style around 89-93. New order did a tongue in cheek tribute to the Cure with the song "crystal" using the bassline from A forest. And if you listen to the production on "cut here" it sounds very reminiscent of New order's album Get Ready.

To me no Cure song sounds like New Order of Joy Division, I would think any similarity is coincidence.  I certainly don't hear it in The Walk and Blue Monday.

'The Walk' and 'Blue Monday' share the same bassline, that's it. Or if not exactly the same, at least they are very very similar. The other so-called 'rip-offs' mentioned on this thread are however very debatable, to say the least. At least I've never noticed any copying by the Cure, and I happen to be a New Order fan as well (well, at least up to 'Low Life'). As far as New Order copying The Cure, I agree that it is obvious that 'This Time of Night' was at least 'very much inspired' by 'A Forest'...

New Order's "All The Way" has pretty much the same bass riff as "Just Like Heaven"

How about 'Bloodflowers' and 'Doubts Even Here'?  I don't buy for a second that anybody intentionally copied anything.  Coincidental similarities are totally fine...and even fun sometimes.

YouTube just played me this and it sounds SO much to In Between Days! For a moment I was just missing the "go on, go on..." LOL

Honest, I hate it when I find out the bands I love "borrowed" so many of their ideas (when back in the day I thought they were "original").  :(

I don't know, I sometimes think we as humans, we see something, listen to something and it becomes ingrained in the unconscious and we make things that we think are original at that time. I don't think its borrowing or theft, it's infuence. It really annoys me, all the lawsuits there are these days for artists coming forward and claiming damages for 1 line of a song, time wasting frivolous lawsuits.

Nothings new anymore and the looks on children's faces when you explain this, it's priceless

I love both bands so much (both in my top 6 bands) but I don't think New Order really coppied The Cure. Yes in some of there songs there are similar beats, riffs, licks etc but thats no copying. Smilar stuff thou so they must have been kinda like, inspired or something. Ik The Cure n New Order are friends n stuff. ❤️❤️

I agree, sometimes there can be similarities but nobody is a copycat here...I would call it inspiration instead or simply coincidence: many 80s post-punk bands tend to sound similar. Regarding the case of The Walk and Blue Monday, maybe it's just me but I think they sound nothing alike!

Yeah, Blue Monday may have a similar back beat, but the song is different from The Walk!

Yeah, that is correct. Music does not exist without "influences", most musicians copy someone before they start "their own thing".
In folk music, it used to be "normal" to take old songs and put new words to them etc.

I did know about a few 2-3 tracks similarities but not all the list by japanesebaby, so i listened to the supposed copies to check if i could hear and indeed recognize the 'ripp-off'

warsaw - foxy lady (that's a classic simple punk guitar intro riff)
atrocity exhibition - splintered in her head (the drum roll)
dream never ends - ? (nothing obvious to me)
blue monday - the walk - this is the most talked about thing.
i remember nothing - ? (nothing obvious to me)

this time of night and crystal - the keys notes intro sound like a remix for a forest
all the way - just like heaven kind of bassline

Let's see... oh, it's seem we hear differences :)

I don't think there are ripp-offs, I think there are similarities in... the musical world the two groups share. Even if what they say reads as if they hated each others. I don't know why. That all surely listen to all kind of music, try new instrument, experiment new thing, they most probably have met, met people in common, discuss music, ideas spreads...
Nothing is always 'new' like coming out of the blue, we 'invent' from all we know and hear and see, I don't believe in intentional copying, I can believe in someone hearing something (not 'listening', understand the difference?) and one day or one year afterwards, while in the creation process the brain re-surface a souvenir, more or less similar, improved, fit toi the actual situation, without even being aware of it.

That's how it goes.

Well, since Peter Hook left New Order, they seem to get along pretty well!
