What exactly "Entry for Primary Entry and General Admission customers into this area is on a first-come-first served basis and it is not guaranteed" means?

Does this means holders of General Admission tickets (£ 62) can enter the capacity controlled area if they arrive before the holders of Primary Entry tickets (£ 72)? If that's the case, what's the advantage of paying £ 10 more for the ticket?

I totally agree with you David.
it's kind unfair because if we paid like you said 10£ more we should have right to go there if not whats ythe point of paying more?!? :smth011

I hope so, David. 'Primary entry' is a bit confusing. I mean the park has more than one
entrance, hasn't he? I was interested in the yellow area, but I couldn't select it, so I ordered
a GA-ticket.  :?

Nice as it "would be", I get the feeling that expectations will be high for some, which will possibly only lead to disappointments.  :(
So far, we can only "guess" that the band line-up will be the current one (RS, Simon, Roger, Jason, Reeves).

It's 40 years of The Cure. Playing a two-hour set would be great, but not special, and Bob IS special. So I am expecting something special ;)

That's the biggest downer (for me), "only" 120 minutes seems relatively "short" for a Cure show! (Of course, they have lots of other interesting bands playing, but...)

Maybe Robert has something "special" lined up for this, let's hope so, but I myself also hope that expectations won't become mountain-high, because then there'll be lots of moaning and whining...

The Kiss would fit perfectly. I looked at 1988 but they didn't play any concerts in that year.
Then I looked at 1987 and 1989. Plainsong is maybe too dark for a summer scene, unless it
would rain. I don't know...

It was a nice summery day when The Cure played Hyde Park in 2002, nevertheless they did start with "Plainsong" as far as I recall...

I'd love to see something along those lines too.  I'm pretty sure the line-up will be the one that toured last year.  Lol would probably do something like what he did during the 'Reflections' gigs, adding color to as many songs as would be appropriate.  I can't see Robert asking Jason to step aside for ANY length of time, not even a song or two.  Still, the only way I'm going to feel that I missed out on something special will be if Pearl does a couple of encores.  A two-hour festival set in the park?  No.  I should add, not for me.  For those of you who are excited about it and wouldn't miss it for the world, I hope it is everything that YOU hope it is.

I'm not sure if you'll be in front with primary pass. I think you might have to have premium for that. When I saw them on tour last year, I waited up to 13 hours to be able to stand at the stage. It was cold (especially in Wembley) but worth it. That's great you get to see them for the first time! You're going to LOVE the show. I'm pretty excited about the line-up at the anniversary show. It's going to be an incredible day!

Based on previous Cure experiences, 2 hours before doors open should be enough to have a decent place.

With so many bands playing, "doors open" will probably be quite early in the day?
(Don't forget, you might have to stand there front stage for all of the bands before The Cure take the stage in the evening! Might become exhausting, especially if the weather will be sunny.)

With so many bands playing, "doors open" will probably be quite early in the day?

Yes, I suppose around noon.

I read somewhere that door opens at 12:30 for primary entry and 13:30 for standard GA

What amount of hours did you fans who have attended previous Cure shows waited in line to be front row?
I am really curious!

curefans.com's japanesebaby saw The Cure in front row in all the European shows she went to in 2016. I think she was queuing for 4 to 6 hours before doors opened.

3rd night in Wembley we started queuing at 6:30 am and we were the first ones. Hyde Park show will be crowded, there are fans of other bands also, but it is too early to start thinking of that :)

When The Cure played in Lima there was some people camping from the day before, so maybe 06:30 am is not so bad after all ;) Maybe for this special anniversary it will be the same? We will see. Here's an interview I did with some of the fans back then:

(Don't forget, you might have to stand there front stage for all of the bands before The Cure take the stage in the evening! Might become exhausting, especially if the weather will be sunny.)

I have to watch my blood pressure and pulse. After the fantastic show in London (Dec 2014)
I suppose that my window of time is 6-7 hours with beta blocker. Everything beyond this is dangerous
for me, so I believe it would be better to enter the park not before 4 pm.

Yes I am excited about the line-up as well! Only The Twilight Sad I need to get into, never digged into that band for some reason but I will very soon..for now I am in a (quite long) period that I can't listen to anything but The Cure so checking other bands is on hold.
..and yeah that's what I read a lot about hours and hours waiting for The Cure and that it's all worth it! I'll prepare myself!

Of course, take care!
In 2002 I had a great time at Hyde Park, at first sitting under a tree in the back, eating free ice cream (there was a company "trying out" their new product, giving it away for free, I could hardly believe it!) and listening to some of the support acts, then wandering about a bit (I do remember Mogwai were loud even at the back!), later being a bit more close to the stage, for The Cure I stood near the mixing desk (nearly always the spot with the best sound...)!  :)

I'm afraid my cynicism is welling up inside me again...  One show in Hyde Park, loads of other bands, a two-hour festival set intended, ostensibly, to do justice to 40 years of music, in front of 500,000 fans (give or take), hit-and-run and a massive payday at the end for doing about half a gig.  Whatever interest I may have had is gone.  Nice work if you can get it...

Well, I said right from the start that 120 minutes seems relatively "short" for The Cure!
The good thing is: the other bands are good or interesting (at least).  :)
(However, if you're on your feet for all of them, you'll be happy the Cure will "only" play 2 hours...)

Quote from: cheyler on January 14, 2018, 03:44:21a massive payday at the end for doing about half a gig.

How much is their payday?  :?
When I saw them in 2016, they played for two and a half hours. That was part of a tour with lots of concerts, so I would guess the pay was "massive". Thus I would guess Hyde Park's not about the money... (they could do a festival tour playing "greatest hits" for 1,5 hours if they wanted that).

No idea about the size of the payday, but it's in the millions, has to be.  I don't begrudge them a dime, they deserve every penny and well done them!

I hear the 'Only European Show' line and have to wonder.  There wouldn't be another U.S. tour in the offing.  They'll never play Washington State again after last year's Sasquatch nightmare, and they gave up on Seattle more than 20 years ago.  I think Toronto gets a 40th Anniversary show too.  I'm calling it right here and now.  Toronto will be the next gig they announce.

For one show? I don't think so.
I can imagine the payday for a big tour like 2016 will go into millions... (but they have to pay road crew and drivers and so on).

Does anyone know anything about the park and how it's set up for concerts?  Have there been shows there with 500,000 people?  How can they have huge concerts there three days in a row, cleaning everything after even one huge event must take a long time.

I think there were 3 days of concerts too when I saw The Cure there back in July 2002!
Hyde Park is huge, so there is only a part of it which is used for the concerts. The rest of the park is still accessible for people to do what they do in a park (taking a walk, row a boat on the lake...).

For more info, look here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_concerts_in_Hyde_Park
QuoteHyde Park in London, England, has been an important venue for rock music concerts since the late 1960s. The music management company Blackhill Enterprises held the first rock concert there on 29 June 1968, attended by 15,000 people. On the bill were Pink Floyd, Roy Harper and Jethro Tull. The supergroup Blind Faith (featuring Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood) played their debut gig in Hyde Park on 7 June 1969. The Rolling Stones headlined a concert (later released as The Stones in the Park) on 5 July that year, two days after the death of founding member Brian Jones, and is now remembered as one of the most famous gigs of the 1960s.

The park has also played host to many music festivals, including Party in the Park between 1998 and 2004, The Wireless Festival between 2005 and 2012, Hard Rock Calling between 2006 and 2012, Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park since 2011 and Barclaycard presents British Summer Time since 2013.

Of course, after the events, the grass won't look nice and there's been complaints in the past.

Is the current stage in the same place (more or less) as it was in 1969?  King Crimson opened for the Rolling Stones on July 5th, the Cure show will be almost 49 years to the day.  Time goes way too fast.

Sorry for butting in, i'm a newbie here but i'd be so up for meeting with other fans before the show. Would be amazing. I'd suggest another pub though as the Lamb & Flag is so expensive, i work around the corner from it. We should go to a wetherspoons as at least it'd be cheaper and more room for us all to gather in and freak out the norms.

I'd suggest another pub though as the Lamb & Flag is so expensive, i work around the corner from it. We should go to a wetherspoons as at least it'd be cheaper and more room for us all to gather in and freak out the norms.

Feel free to suggest. The meeting will take place the night before the event, I guess.

Cheers.Well there's a pub called The Lord Moon of The Mall near Charing Cross tube station. It'll be cheaper there. Plus there'll be more room too.

As this post evolves and everyone decides where and when to meet, may I suggest cross-posting it on not only Twitter but also the Fans of the Cure Facebook group page? It'd be great to have one enormous group of fans at the same location rather than 2-3 different things going on, don't you think?

It would be great if the local, London Cure fans could just name a place. I'm vegan, but wherever you all choose is fine with me. It's about meeting Cure fans over having good food.  :-D

Nothing has been decided here yet. It is February, so plenty of time until July. As you can see above, dsanchez was/is open for suggestions.
Once it'll be decided, I'm certain he will cross-post it as much as he can!

I don't know. The food is only average and in the evening this location will be crowded.
Maybe we should vote about the suggestions until May/June unless the admin will come
earlier to a conclusion.

Hi all, for the meeting point let's throw some ideas and we will decide what's best for all. I think most Cure fans will be in London from the day before, so I think we definitely need to gather the 6th of July evening somewhere.

As for the festival itself, doors open 13:30 and I guess most people will go there from very early, so if we do a gathering on 07/07 it will have to in some meeting point in the festival area itself.

I wanted Friday as day off but it's july and my only colleague for the Export department is already on holiday. It's a small Company and if someone is missing is kinda problematic

I was getting a little worried as well because it seems odd that the tickets aren't sent as soon as they are payed for and so I mailed AXS too. They replied:

The e-tickets for this event have not yet been released. Tickets may be received at any point up until the week of the event, but are usually sent out around 2 weeks before.

If you have not had your tickets within 3 days of the event, please call 0203 481 5506.

I guess no need to worry

Thank you. The Customer service has responded to me as well - quicker than expected.
I suppose my ticket (via surface mail) will pop up around June. That's OK, but I haven't
booked flight and hotel yet - something that I have to do in May at the latest I think. The
ticket is actually not the problem but my life situation is consternating.  :(

If however you require cash there are cashpoints available at the north of the site. These cashpoints accept credit cards and foreign cards. Please note that there will be a charge for each withdrawal in addition to any account provider charges.

Alright, no hurry, looking forward to this too. It was just a bit worrying to hear nothing from no-one...

Sorry! Went straight to Barcelona on the Sunday from Gatwick and took us a while to recover from the amazing weekend we had, meeting loads of lovely people (including David and Tessi) and from the two hours of heaven where we danced and sung our hearts out.

Wonderful  :heart-eyes

Wished you had made it Ulrich, would of been fantastic to see you :)

Ah, we will. A few weeks here in the sun and beside the sea will do us a world of good.

I know! She loved it all, especially being at the fan meeting even though she was really tired from a long day of travelling. Next time, I really hope you'll be there :)

I'm looking forward to read it, it was unexpected and not planned to be there on Friday, but I was dreaming that I was on the concert on saterday all alone, lost in the crowd and missing my longtime Cure-friends around me. So glad I was a bit impulsive but after all I'm glad I was. It was a great weekend with a lot off friendly lovely people by my side. I still miss my voice :-)

On Saturday, as the rest of the nation were distracted by the little matter of a certain world cup quarter final, 65,000 music fans piled into London's Hyde Park to celebrate 40 years – to the exact weekend – of The Cure. As part of the British Summer Time festival, the day's programming was a vibrant celebration not just of the band's career, but also their enduring legacy. The band were joined on the bill by both longtime friends and a selection of Smith's protogees, including British shoegaze stalwarts Slowdive, who shimmered dreamily in the sun, while experimental Swedes pg.lost and Icelandic synth-punks Kaelan Mikla showcased the profound effect The Cure's music continues to have over alternative music.

Greatest Cure setlist of all time? This guy obviously just saw The Cure for the first time! :) There are many other concerts where the setlist was more remarkable than this one, mainly the ones listed in the first post of this thread http://curefans.com/index.php?topic=7466.0

Someone sent this link to me via FB messenger. (Not sure why, he wasn't there, but I think he was with me at a Cure gig back in '92.)
Guess what I told him? Yeah, I told him that this one is ok, but that I heard better setlists myself live.  :happy

Yes indeed, David. Even Meltdown was more profound, but I agree when it comes to Grinding Halt
and Jumping Someone Else's Train. Those songs were well selected for this kind of event.

Despite fan speculation, no special guests or previous members joined the band on stage, as was the case with Meltdown. Which is just as well, as Cure frontman Robert Smith curated a dream festival lineup which featured popular acts such as The Twilight Sad, Editors, Slowdive, Interpol, Ride, and more performing for the 65,000 capacity sold out event that people traveled from all over the world to see.

Because of all of the emotions that I have went trough prior to this 40th anniversary (so months living up to this moment and all of the wonderful hours before the show) I find it hard to be objective about it.

I stood fairly in front of the stage and waited in line for about 1 hour. Getting trough the hardcore fans from my point was impossible :) it was like a brick wall, no way anybody would pass this.
When the band came on I couldn't believe it, very surreal. I was completely overwhelmed and especially by Robert because he is such a charismatic and fascinating person. He said hello to the fans and Simon looked happy and in great shape! TanyaSmith from Curefans has a nice video of the beginning of the show, the audio is not so good but she captures the moment beautifuly https://youtu.be/YQOM0xNnilI
(the whole show was on youtube but has sadly been removed..hope Tim Pope hurries up with the film)

...And then 'Plainsong' started! I had tears falling from my eyes , it was so intense and beautiful. Followed by 'Pictures of You'.. 2 of my favorite Curesongs. Robert's voice was flawless and still sounds incredibly good. I also liked the big screens and images although it was a lot to take in the night itself - I saw a lot of detail the next day that I haven't seen the Saturday ..
I understand Curefans who are saying that it where 'only hits' that were on the setlist but you know..They are all good songs and when I looked around me everybody was singing and smiling and joyful for The Cure and their 40 years anniversary. I know I did too. A dark and melancholic set like many Curefans experienced in the past would maybe not have fitted this occasion so well. Although I would love to experience such a Cureshow in the future, I am not sure if this is still possible. Everything changes and so do bands I think and so does Robert and The Cure. This Curesound where lots of fans refer to (and wich is my favorite as well) is from a specific line-up and this line-up is no more. Fans who experienced this are really spoiled and I mean this in a good way :)

Saturday I heard and saw passion, professionalism and lots and lots of charisma in a tight, uptempo but much too short show. Previous members would have been great (I would have loved it if Pearl was there!) but I think that Robert does what he does and decides with good reason and that he knows best.
I was wondering about this the last couple of days: Can we complain and criticize? Even as fans? Has anybody any thoughts on this? I mean Robert and The Cure are human too and are free to do what they want. I am happy they are still doing shows and like it is written on his guitar.. It can never be the same.
That is how I feel about it. I am curious to read other peoples thoughts.

'If Only Tonight We Could Sleep' was beautiful :)
'Jumping someone else's train' and 'Killing an Arab' as well! Those where my absolute favorites together with 'Plainsong' and 'Pictures of You' :)
'A forest' was a little too short, I would have loved it if it could last 10 more minutes :)

A Cureshow is a whole experience I discovered and that is the merit of the band. I am sorry I only quite recently digged into it but thankful that I have!

The 40th anniversary was a joyeus gig with wonderful music and with lots of love and positive energy floathing, hopefully the band felt this too. I would love to hear Robert's thoughts about the event.

As my review is very personal (first Cureshow) I would like to include the following link: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4151909-the-cure-hyde-park-07-07-18
Of all the reviews that I have read I think this one comes closest to the truth.

Heya guys,

I actually proposed to my girlfriend during Friday I'm In Love at the show! She said yes, which is wicked - but here comes my question. I managed to lose the person who filmed it & took photos, and I'd love to track her down. If anybody has heard anything/seen any videos/photos, that would be amazing - obviously it would mean a lot to me!

The Cure 40th Anniversary Concert: A fan's review
by dsanchez

When The Cure announced a unique European show last December to celebrate their 40 years (1978-2018) I didn't think it twice and bought right away the tickets for the gig which later I found out was part of an enormous festival called "British Summer Time" sponsored by a known bank. No-one knew what to expect of this 40th Anniversary celebration, and there were speculations of former members joining the event. Sadly, this never happened, and both Andy (whose Tweet I can't find now) and Lol wrote on Twitter:

Those posts seemed to me a bit melancholic. I have the impression they wanted to be part of this celebration.

I arrived to London on Thursday 5th of July and headed to Reading (1h from London) the hometown of my other favorite band: Slowdive. On Friday, I went to the Cure fan meeting at the Hawley Arms in Camden town. We had the place booked for us from 6pm to 9pm and had an excellent time with people from all over the world, this forum included! The place didn't have air conditioned and that weekend proved to be one of London's hottest days in year. Still, we had a blast. During the gathering, the match Brazil - Belgium was screened, and one of the most bizarre moments came when, as the match ended (and so did Brazil in the World Cup), "End" was played in the background. The gathering was followed by a show of The Cureheads, also in Camden, to which some of us attended.

Around 13:00 on Saturday I headed to Hyde Park, a huge park in the center of London, wearing a Peru football t-shirt (is World Cup time and I love that t-shirt anyway!) . There was an airport-like security in the gate and we all were carefully examined before getting in. Just after my entrance, there was a kiosk where I could get the festival program, but to my surprise I had to pay £5 if I wanted to get one (in every other festival I went to this was free). Of course, I was not willing to pay £5 for a festival program!

I rushed to the enormous main stage (the "Great Oak Stage") which was already full of (Cure) fans. It was REALLY hot and we could feel the sun's force, burning our heads. The stage had two big trees which, from far, gave the appearance of holding it but once you got closer, you realized they were just fake plastic trees. I wanted to get right in front of the stage but to my dismay I found out that people who arrived early (i.e. around noon) got wristbands that gave them access to that area, which was surrounded by a fence (by the way, it is the first festival where I see this separation). I paid an extra £10 to have a "primary access" (means you could enter before everyone else) but there was nowhere written that wristbands would be distributed to access the sector right in front of the stage and that without them you could not get in later. This unclear information turned into chaos, and a 100-people queue (who paid the extra £10 to have a "primary access") was formed near the main stage with the hope of getting a wristband to see the bands closer. A friend from Switzerland didn't want to wait and got a ticket upgrade for an appalling £100, just to find out it didn't give her access to the area right in front the stage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSHOA2btv7k

As I was walking, I could hear Slowdive playing the beautiful notes of "Slomo", the opening track of their latest album. It was a bitter start for me at the festival because I could not see them from a close position: instead, I had to see them from behind the fence which was very, very far. In the image below, you can see the "General Admission and Garden View" sector. I was right behind it, and it meant I could only watch Slowdive on the screens.

I got better news as I met Jojo after the excellent Slowdive gig, and he was kind enough to hand me a wristband of a friend of his who didn't need it, so I was lucky enough to get access to the "General Admission and Garden View" at last. Luckily, all the people doing the queue to get wristband got them as well, although they had to wait at least one hour under the sun.

The festival area was huge and I really didn't realize until I was there the gigantic festival I was in. The OFF Festival in Katowice, Poland, with 20 000 or the Pohoda Festival in Slovakia, with 30 000 people capacity, seemed tiny by comparison to this 65 000 people festival.

Around 16:00 we decided (I was with a couple of friends) to get some food and look for a place to take a rest (let me repeat this: this was probably the hottest day of the year in London!). We were surprised that there were not big tents for people to eat (a big tent means you can eat your food in the shadow and not under the direct sun) and instead there were only a few scattered tables in the festival area.

The day went by and it was already 19:00 (yes, I did not see any other band besides Slowdive until then)  ut the sun was still there hitting all of us very strong. I wanted to charge my phone and there was a place to do it, but, oh surprise! I had to pay £5 for it. I remembered that a bank sponsored the whole thing and realized they only care about taking advantage of our passion for their profit.

In another, smaller stage, the Ride show commenced around 19:20. This is a band that I wanted to see for a while and they didn't disappoint. They played tracks from their latest album "Weather Diaries" and classics such as "Vapour Trail" or "Leave Them All Behind". The connection between the band and audience was clear from the start. The people sung almost every song. In front of me was a blond guy in their forties with an old Ride t-shirt and I could imagine him following the band in the 90's. The sound was crystal clear and for a moment I wished The Cure played in this stage and not in the gigantic Oak Stage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siNp_1T48nE

The festival program didn't allow much time to switch between Ride and The Cure. As we rushed to the Oak Stage, we could hear the notes of "Plainsong" opening the show. Robert said previous times he hates sunny places and he was clearly uncomfortable by the sun hitting the stage (and thus his face) directly, despite it was already 20:20. On the stage we could see Reeves in the right side followed by Robert in the center and Simon and Roger more to the left. A little behind was Jason. Simon, the man who does not age, had a pink bass guitar and his 1993 look and I immediately though in the Great X-pectations Festival 1993, the last concert with Boris, with him wearing his black-red shirt and similar look. "Plainsong" was followed by "Pictures Of You" and then "High". Having followed The Cure heavily in the last years I predicted the main set would be like the one the band has been using since 2012. And it was.

As the show continued I was wondering if there would be any surprise at all, and not necessarily in the setlist. Then I remembered Lol's tweet and I realized we wouldn't see any ex-member doing a triumphant entrance (something like Alan Wilder appearing in a Depeche Mode concert (https://consequenceofsound.net/2010/02/alan-wilder-reunites-with-depeche-mode-in-london/)). One of my favorites, "Push", was played and I had a flashback, remembering Robert with his short hair in Orange and me watching that video in a VHS player when I was sixteen. Fourty years of The Cure and nearly the half of that time me listening to them. I got a little melancholic for a moment but then somewhat happier as I my attention refocus to The Cure and I hear  Robert singing "like strawberries and cream is the only way to be...". I realize I am a lucky man to have the chance to celebrate this anniversary of the band I love, with the band I love.

I look around in the audience and I see the devotion of the people, people from everywhere. There was someone with an Argentinian flag on my left and someone with a Mexican flag on my right. I hear people speaking different languages: a French girl next to me, a German in front drinking wine, Portuguese, Greeks, Scottish... and not only a mix of nationalities: also, ages. It shows how The Cure's music trascends anything: borders, ages, religions, you name it. You can see only happy faces around. Yes, again, I know this is not the best concert setlist by The Cure, but like I said, it does not matter. When someone invites you to his party you go and enjoy, you're not complaining why they don't serve cocktail instead of beer. Yes, I though it would be more special, setlist-speaking, but it turns out CURAETION-25 was better in that aspect. In retrospective, I think Robert just wanted to throw a party and get there as many people as possible. And I think he got it: sixty-five thousand people prove that.

As with any Cure show in the last years, a mainset that starts with "Plainsong" finishes with "Disintegration" and this is not the exception. Although I miss the dynamics of the "Entreat" version, Robert's voice was great and this classic proved to be, as usual, a must in every show. I still miss more "punch" (I don't know what English word to use. Passion?) in the drumming. Compared to the Slowdive and Ride shows earlier in the day, both with top-notch drummers, there was something missing in this component in The Cure's set.

After a short break, the band returned for a final encore. It's a pop one and starts with "Lullaby" followed by "The Caterpillar". Jojo, in front of me, makes a grin as the notes of "Friday I'm In Love" start. I think hardcore fans must be tired of this one but this is a still a great pop-song and, in a such an event, "Friday" would be probably more missed than "Siamese Twins".

Before the most popular Cure song ever is played, Robert does a short speech (see video below): "Forty years ago on this weekend is the first we played as The Cure in Crawley... and if you asked then what I would be doing in forty years I would have been wrong with my answer (...) Thank you very much" and I realized again how lucky I am to be part of such a special moment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXivYrLNxsM

"Boys Don't Cry" was followed by unexpected additions such as "Jumping Someone Else's Train" and "Grinding Halt". The hardcore fans, those who saw The Cure 25, 50, 100 or who knows how many times, are finally (more) satisfied as this improves the usual 'festival setlist'. We already know what is next. Is nearly 10:15 pm Saturday Night in London and the choice is obvious. The two songs of the first single of The Cure, released in September 1978 are played, and "Killing An Arab" proves to be again the best closer song for any The Cure concert - always. The concert finishes and all the members leave the stage, except Robert who walks from right to left, kind of jumping at times and thanking the audience. He says "see you again very soon". His participation in Meltdown as a curator seem that motivated him to release/create new material, as he stated in recent interviews, but time will tell.

I met with several members of curefans.com after the concert (x-phile, Trust.., helloimageifonly, Susanna...). Some of them arrived to Hyde Park around 10:00am so that they could be in the first row. This means that they endured twelve hours under the sun in London's hottest day of the year. I probably would have fainted if I did the same (yes, even if I come from Peru). There's something in The Cure that makes you do things that you would not normally do for any other band no matter how good it is. From the very first moment you listen to The Cure, some people (like me, or like you) have an instant connection, a connection that becomes stronger during the years. There's just no way to explain why or how that happens. I guess is like being in love, only that "being in love" goes away after 2-4 years, and with The Cure, you can be in love a lifetime.

Title: Things @BSTHydePark needs to improve
Post by: dsanchez on July 15, 2018, 14:38:41
Although I had a great time last weekend, I noticed several things in the festival that I did not like. I hope someone at BST will read this and take action. By the way, the below has nothing to do with The Cure or any of the other great bands that played there. My overall impression was that they wanted to charge us for everything and honestly it was an appalling ripoff in some cases. Let's see:

£ 5 for charging your phone battery (no kidding!)

£ 5 for the festival program (which is normally free in any other festival)

£ 3,5 for cash withdrawal (of any amount) in any of the ATMs there

£ 100 to £ 150 for an upgrade to a VIP ticket (which did not include, however, access to the zone right in front of the stage)

Also:

No food tents for people to eat under a roof rather than under the sun. There were only scatered tables in the festival area, but no tent over them. You had to look yourself for some tree or something else if you wanted to eat in the shadow.

Little time to switch between stages: If you wanted to see the full show of Ride (like I did) you had very little time to switch stages and get on time for the next show (The Cure's show!). Either you had to run, or you had to leave before Ride's set ended in order to catch The Cure's full set.

The "Primary Entry" thing was unclear. Several people with this kind of ticket were surprised to arrive to the festival and see others with wristbands. Yes, there was an indication that the area near the stage would be of "limited capacity" but the information about this was overall blurry and prove of that is the hundreds of people queued in the afternoon to get a wristband for the area near the stage (and some of them maybe never got it)

You're right with your criticism of the money-grabbing nature of many festivals these days.  :1f62a:
Which is why I don't go to many of 'em!

Not true. It is free with some; depending on the festival or program size (sometimes it's more like a "book") it can cost.
(Just like some bands do sell "tour program" books at their shows.)

Well, I meant those little programs that fit in your money purse, nothing really fancy. I didn't mean a book program or a program such as the one The Cure was selling in the European 2016 Tour - which I was happy to pay 10 EUR for.

My first review ever

Never wrote a review of a show before but I try with this one (sorry for my bad English).

When the show was announced I was really excited, even if I am not a fan of festivals. I immediately bought my ticket and planned the journey and arranged meetings with other fans and friends.

I should have arrived in London on Friday around 7pm but my flight delayed more than 3 hours and a half and I was in the hotel around midnight. Thus I couldn't meet the other fans at the Hawley Arms and that's my biggest regret of that weekend.

I started queuing really early in the morning to be in the first row, I was at Hyde Park South Entrance at 5 am and I was already number 15. On my run to the barrier of the Great Oak Stage at 12.30, I didn't pay attention to the kiosks or whatever else around. It was hard but the barrier was mine just in front of Simon (or at least his Reading FC flag)!

The first band was Pale Waves, never heard before, but they were good; then the Slowdive came up on the stage and I was so happy, they are always terrific! The Editors were great as well as the Interpol. In general, all the groups on that stage were amazing but (non-musically speaking) I didn't like the Goldfrapp because they were the only one who didn't thank or mention The Cure and Robert Smith at all. I mean they were at Hyde Park because of The Cure 40th anniversary!! I would have liked to see both The Twilight Sad and Ride also but I couldn't leave the first row.

I danced almost all day, eating just chips, and it was so hot hot hot. When the Interpol finished their performance I was tired and didn't know if I had energy enough to enjoy The Cure show as I used to. But when the intro began and they came on stage I started crying and immediately understand that neither a whole dancing day could stop me!
The setlist was good, on BBC 6 radio Robert said that it would have been a "hands-in-the-sky" show, whilst Meltdown the "gloom-and-doom" one. I didn't expect anything different and it was a surprise when they played "The Rocket pub" songs at the end.

Last shows of the 2016 tour were a pain because Robert had some problems with his throat and voice but at Hyde Park, he was really in a good shape and in "a party mood".

I was happy to meet dsanchez, Trust and all the other Curefans crew after the show even if for a few time.

I am a bit sad now that kind of sadness that I always feel when I don't know when and if I could see them again. It will be better in the next weeks and as soon as they announce some shows in 2019 (fingers crossed!). By the way, I have already started saving money.

In the next days, I will upload some pictures I took during the show ;)

Review

When I saw the news about the 40 Years anniversary gig, I thought immediately that I couldn't miss this. It was also mine 40th birthday @march 2018.
What I could wish more than this! A lot of females told that these 40th birthday a nightmare or awfull day was for them. And I saw 2018 as a big celebrating year :) With The Cure headlining this.

I booked my hotel and Eurostar, later on I saw the meeting and I thought dammed, I gonna miss it.

I had a nightmare that I didn't met any curefan at all...
People told me to change the train and hotel.
I thought oh it's ok, try not to think about it.

On friday 6th of July @lunchtime my sweet husband confinced me to change everything and drove me to Lille. Ten minutes before the departure I arrived...
And so glad I did this. I had a wonderfull time, met new friends and saw x-phile, dsanchez, jojo, SuzannaRS, helloimageifonly, ....

The concert was a bit weird because I wasn't that close then usual. A bit strange with all the daylight and sun. The setlist wasn't maybe not what we expected, no surprises, but still great powerfull. THE CURE on stage :)
After all it was a celebrating and I must say I was never do such singing, dancing, jumping at a concert than now. They can't give the same as Reflections on a festival.

I was at a concert where I really saw tears on Robert's face, luckely we had a happy Robert enjoying the performance. The most beautiful part was when Robert and Simon where playing together shoulder by shoulder and then the eye-contact and smiles on there faces!

I still live in a little dream :)

As for the topic...

I was expecting more.

For me it was another Cure concert, typical setlist (except for Jumping or Grinding).

The shortest Cure show I have ever attended.

I know everyone thinks it was great, amazing, etc... For me what they did in Meltdown (setlist and playing one song of every album and then same but backwards) was more special.

It's not that I think "Friday I'm in love", "Just like Heaven" etc are not good songs, but they're just good, if you know what I mean. I didn't become a fan of The Cure because of these songs, but because of the whole Disintegration, Pornography, Carnage visors, the B-sides, etc.

I really was expecting to listen to some early stuff, like Cult Hero, I dig you, Listen, Heroin face... something different. Maybe having Siouxsie as a guest, or Lol. No Pornography at all? Would I have sacrificed all the hits to listen One hundred years, Pornography, M, At night? HELL YEAH. It was supposed to be "the fan show", for people who are true fans, to thank them all. Maybe I have the wrong idea of what a fan wants to listen to, and I'm focusing only in what I would have liked. But if it wasn't meant to be that day, then when? Obviously it's never going to happen, and I'm delusional.

To be honest, if I had known I wouldn't have attended this concert, I traveled from Spain, I spent a lot of money, thinking it was going to be a special show and when it ended I was like... ok...

Good to see them again but I have seen so many better Cure shows than this one... I'm sorry

Cheers!

The first few times I saw The Cure I felt a sadness when the shows were over, but now I know what to expect. I booked my flight from California to London Heathrow in December 2017, arranged for a 12 day stay in London. I traveled with my significant other and we made lots of plans around The Cure show, both before and after the show. We visited Holland Park to see peacocks, walked all through Hyde Park and swam in the Lido, saw Tina the Musical at the Aldwych Theatre, and took a day trip to the White Cliffs of Dover.

On Saturday morning, I got up at 5 AM. I could have gone out and started waiting, but I felt this sense that if I took my time getting ready and headed over there later in the morning all would work out fine. I got to the venue at around 9:30 AM and there were 4 people ahead of me, an Italian fan, a German Interpol fan, and a sweet couple from Israel, there for The Cure. We all had primary/early entry general admission tickets. The guard at our gate was an English Indian man and he promised that he'd let us first 20 early arrivers get in and stake out our places, regardless of which tickets we had. It was funny because that's what was going to happen anyway. He told us he had been Princess Diana's journalist and that he was a secret agent of some sort. He then told us that we must not think he was any different or better than us. LOL!!! Awwww, he was sweet, though.

When our gate opened, the scanners didn't work at first, so we had to wait about two minutes to get in. Still, I ran to the bar and got to stand behind the people who had staked out their place beneath where Robert's mic would be. I didn't leave my spot once, but the people at the bar took turns going to the bathroom and getting food and drinks. A German woman named Sandy showed up about an hour after we had all staked out our places and she wiggled her way in, trying to take my spot. I tried to tell her that it was rude of her to do that, but she told me she didn't understand what I was saying. She grew on me, turned out she had abandoned her family for the weekend to fly to The Cure show. She worked at a home that treated the mentally ill and had three teenage kids at home, so needed this getaway badly. She ended up feeding us all with snacks and coconut water that she brought in her bag. I ended up treasuring that she was there and loved chatting with her throughout the day. Her English was better than she let on in the beginning of our conversation.:winking_tongue
Something strange was that my lower back kept hurting very, very badly. I had to keep massaging it and stretching it. Sandy told me that she had chronic lower back pain from an injury she got on a trampoline more than 20 years ago. Sometimes I can feel others pain. I'm glad because it helps them to feel less of it.

During Goldfrapp's performance, a guy was carried away on a stretcher. Too much to drink? She was actually my favorite act besides The Cure's. She reminds me of Debra Harry. The Pale Waves were pretty cute, too. The lead singer reminds me a lot of Siouxsie. Loved Slowdive. With the others I just put my earplugs in and waited for The Cure. In a way I wonder if Robert Smith only chose people who would make The Cure look really good in comparison? Ha ha. I do think it's wonderful that he gives other bands a chance, though.

To my relief, Robert looked healthier than in 2016. He came out looking really tired though, and I worried he'd not make it through the show, but right after Plainsong, he seemed to recover his vigor. I felt like we really connected after a few songs and I felt that way through the rest of the show. It's so healing to sing the songs with him. I can't seem to take my eyes off of him when he's up there. I go into a trance.

After the show was done, I went out and laid in the grass with my feet in the air for 10 minutes. My significant other came to meet me from the Summer Garden, where he had been. My feet killed for the 20 minute walk back to our hotel. I felt pretty ruined from all the standing, wild dancing and stomping I had done. By the next day I felt mostly recovered, but my feet ached pretty badly if I stood for more than a minute anywhere.

We stayed in Hyde Park until the 12th, exploring and eating at our favorite restaurant, Farmacy. I didn't feel let down or that sad that the show was over, just felt a sense of something to look forward to when they play again.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here's the video I captured. I usually take more at Cure shows, but I spent more time connecting with Robert and dancing this time:

It's strange but like David wrote we all do things for The Cure that we won't do for any other band. Extreme cold or hot hot hot can't stop us. I never need to pee, never felt hungry or other where I should complain about it in other situations 😏

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">I won&#38;#39;t be at Hyde Park on Saturday physically. However, I shall be there in spirit. I send my love and thanks to all of you for this beautiful journey these last forty years. Lolx</p>— Lol Tolhurst (@LolTolhurst) <a href="https://twitter.com/LolTolhurst/status/1015108243746533376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 6, 2018</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

You're right about Lol and Andy.  I think Perry would have gone if asked.  I asked Lol and Andy about six different ways and always got the "not sure yet" to "listen to Robert's podcast over on... (whatever it was).  Anyone who refused would have said "no way" during interviews, they wouldn't have tried to string us along...I mean, who would that help, right?  Not every guy on that stage was integral to the establishment and growth of the band over the last forty years.  They helped maintain the name 'The Cure' for the last six years or so, yes, but...  Porl?  This band is never the same without him.  Perry?  First as a tech and then a full-fledged member...over the course of 20 years!  Robert wants to get pissed because Jason gets snubbed by an irrelevant magazine?  I'll get pissed at Robert's exclusion of most of the major players that made this band what it is today...or what it was two years ago, anyway.  They are treading water again.

Hey, I was sad that Lol didn't play, too, (he and Andy are my fellow Aquarians) but looking at things from Robert's perspective, why would he want to have Lol play at a show where he'd have to pay him when Lol sued him years ago? Also, maybe Robert's trying to keep the current Cure line-up tight and doesn't want to invite conflict by bringing back old members? He did do that Reflections tour with Lol...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cure:_%27Reflections%27

I don't understand why certain Cure fans are hard on Jason. Robert obviously appreciates his presence in the band. Nobody was hard on Reeves...Why? Because he played with David Bowie? But what can anybody expect but for Cure fans to reminisce about the past and complain?...Just like Robert. Personally I want to see a transformation happen in Robert. Something to show that he's learned something valuable in all his years as leader of a band, traveling the world, dealing with musicians and artists, the music industry. He's got wisdom in him. I hope the wisdom spills out in their next album.

Some or most of us are wondering the same thing(s) as you.  I think the whole Jason-bashing thing has calmed down, finally.  He's been subjected to withering and unjustified scrutiny since he first parked his butt on that drum stool. He's there, and he'll continue to be there, for however long that might be.

If you believe Lol, and I do, things are square between Robert and him.  I'm guessing there were going to be too many songs that wouldn't require Lol's assistance.  Last thing you want is someone playing a song or two then going off-stage only to come back a few songs later and play another one or two.  With Andy, it's either set up two drumkits or have Andy replace Jason on a few songs.  Neither option is satisfactory.

You mention Robert and his wisdom.  Not sure I'd want to listen to an album of songs about "what I've learned during my time on this Earth" or anything like that.  That's kinda what he's been doing all along anyway.

I couldn't stand Reeves at first, his style and tone were entirely out of place.  Skip to 2016 and suddenly he fits in perfectly.  He adds to the mix as opposed to hijacking the sound every time he plays a solo.  I don't know what they did during the intervening months (years?), but it's obvious the band were getting a bit of 'feedback' concerning Reeves.  I told Reeves (in 2016) that my attitude about him had changed completely and I told him why.  He was very gracious about the whole thing.  I like Reeves very much.  No idea what happens next.  I guess we'll see.

I forgot to bring up Porl/Pearl. Is there any reason why The Cure would be refraining from having him participate because of being estranged from Robert's sister Janet? Or is that all square at this point? I read that Porl/Pearl wanted more space to be creative than Robert's democratic vision for The Cure allowed.

I thought for sure (almost) that Pearl would at least do an encore at one of the shows.  He's said in interviews that he'd never rule out working with The Cure again in some capacity;  I don't think we'll ever see Pearl hit the road with The Cure again but maybe an encore or two or even some small contribution to an album?  No idea as to the status of Porl & Janet's marriage.  I can't imagine Robert asking Porl to leave the band over a failed (or at least sputtering) relationship.

Why is Porl no longer in the band?  It's a bit of a mystery, but there are enough clues lying around that you can pretty much figure it out if you recognize them for what they are.

After Porl re-joined in 2005, they really didn't do many gigs until 2008.  They postponed some in 2007 to finish up the album.  Then the record company refused to issue the album as a double.  That's when the trouble started, if I understand correctly.  There was a lawsuit against the record company too, and it took a couple of years to sort out.  I think Porl left because he felt he could be more creative outside the band rather than inside.  The record company was stifling the band's creativity, or their ability to be creative, whichever you prefer.  To me, Porl/Pearl will always be the missing piece of the puzzle until such time that he rejoins or the band no longer exists.

As cheyler pointed out, they certainly have "made up" and according to Lol they are "friends" again.
For more on this, view the topic about Lol's book:

I agree that Robert probably wanted to play the shows with the current line-up of The Cure (seeing he's planning to go into the studio with them, according to recent interviews).
It might lead to confusion who's in The Cure if they had ex-members coming up to play with them.

You're right.  It was disappointing, but...what can you do.  I'm surprised at the non-commital answers from Lol and Andy, and Perry never even responded.  It seems like they wanted to do it but nobody even bothered to ask.  Trying to erase these guys from the story is disrespectful in the extreme.  Not wanting to 'pollute the waters' just before going into the studio is a good theory.  There would be no hurt feelings that way...not in the band anyway.

I watched 10.15, Grinding Halt, JSET, Disintegration and Killing an Arab on yt and I must
state that the overall sound was excellent. This is probably the most professional The Cure line-up
ever. Robert knows that and I suppose most (if not all) complaining fans actually too. We
didn't criticize the show(s) itself. There were only lacks of communication. Of course, I have
missed Lol and a restricted program is not everyone's taste, but the current line-up is more
than a match than previous ones. We can expect great live shows next year!

The video has much better sound than the audio.  Seems (so far) there's only one audio to surface and nobody has put up any video for download (yet).  We might not see anything of any real quality since the gig was being recorded for release and security is usually told to crack down hard in cases like that, as if anyone would walk away with anything that could compete with a professional recording.

There was a video on youtube somebody put up after the show of the entire show. It may have been taken by a professional videographer who was in the pit with the photographers because it didn't have any interference. It was beautiful and crisp, sound was great...but it got taken down a few days after it was posted. I'm guessing it was Tim Pope or copyright people. Tim Pope liked a video I posted on twitter from the show, but the sound quality is horrible so no danger in competing with sales for the to-be-released The Cure in Hyde Park 40th Anniversary.  :D

"There were only lacks of communication." MeltingMan

As far as miscommunications, there's a Mercury Retrograde in full swing. This is a good time to straighten out information, but also a time when things can get misconstrued. Things will feel clearer by the end of August.

One thing that came to my mind today is that he's still very busy with part two
of his book. That could be a reason that he didn't appear at BST 2018.

highly unlikely. after reading the first 100 pages of his book and seeing how fundamental he was in setting The Cure, I hardly doubt he would have refused an invitation to this party.

I don't know if we will get any clarification about this...if he has been invited by Robert or not.
Probably not...the event is over.

Probably not, my guess is that no-one of the ex-members was asked/invited, as Robert wanted to do the shows with the current line-up (which is what he obviously did).
