Anyone else is going?

Well I don´t know. They play the Arvika festival in Sweden and the rest of the cleared band does make me hesitate. But it´s more than six months left to take off so there is time for contemplation in the matter...
I'll be in Nancy!!! :-D I was quite happy that they play just next to home for once! Too bad not to go to Paris though, it would have been cool to see David again... some other time then... ;)
Maybe in rome 16th june...
i wanted to go, but it was sold out in two days i think. too late :(
for me it's an uninteresting selection of dates/locations so i'll pass. anyway, i'm not disappointed. i saw them in 2006 and i don't think they've really changed much since them so i don't think i'll miss very much.
besides i'd rather save my money for the (possibly) upcoming nin tour... :-D
I suppose I'll see DM when they play in th U.S. since I haven't seen them since they toured for 'Songs of Faith and Devotion'. Yeah, it's been a while.

you're probably right, i don't think they've changed at all...but i have never seen them live so i was a bit disappointed. anyway, i'm saving money for possible arcade fire or radiohead gig :).
by the way call it nerdy but i can't help it that find it somehow funny that they call they tour "tour of the universe", and then play concerts only planet Earth. it's as if some band announced a world tour but then only played a couple of secret gigs their own basement.
so either it's totally unfair (for instance for anyone in andromeda galaxy - who'd have to wait a couple of million years for even the news of this to arrive over there), or perhaps in DM they still believe that the Earth is a flat disc and that's all there is...

Give them time, jb. Not all of the dates have been announced just yet. Rumor has it they're playing the moon just after Coachella. :P

oh, i just found out their new album is going to be titled as 'Sound Of The Universe'....probably that's why the tour is called 'Tour Of The Universe'. Makes sense now.

it is megalomaniac, but the good thing is that it's a quite arrogant title as well, like a statement, or manifesto... that is just what was needed after all those years of being dismissed as a crappy 80's band. I think they are one of those few bands that really survived...like the cure, u2, rem perhaps.
I totally missed Playing the Angel tour, but Exciter tour date I saw was on A. Fletcher's birthday & they had the venhue partying it up with them! Also, remember the greatest hits show went well, but nothing will beat the Violator tour with Nitzer Ebb opening up. Will Martin support as dj opener, I'd definatly go to that.

Tour of the Universe? More like "Tour of the giant metro areas in the East/West, a few down south, then let's take our money and go home."
You would think they'd want to make up for the cancelled/bad voice gigs in Chicago and Kansas City the last time around.
I'm really not that into Depeche Mode, but I'd like to see them if they played somewhere halfway close to where I live.

I'd say it's safe to say they'll be headlining one night of Lollapalooza. It takes place in Chicago from Aug. 7-9. ;)

but imo, depeche mode is hardly a band that's very interesting to see on a festival. i would go to see them if they played around here once more, but only if it was a real concert, not a festival gig.

No argument from me there. But then the same could be said for several bands. I mad the mistake of seeing Smashing Pumpkins at a festival in Seattle when i should have made the trip down to Portland for a headline gig. 1 hour vs. 2+ hours :? I might be dealing with the same thing this summer at the Sasquatch Festival w/ Jane's and NIN. And then again if I decide to go to Lollapalooza.
Just noticed DM added a warm-up show in Luxembourg yesterday. Tickets went on sale today, and concert was already SOLD OUT in just 3 hours :?

(a 6500 capacity venue)
Got my tickets for Seattle yesterday. Row 18. :-D
08/17 in hollywood and 08/19 in anaheim. not my favorite live band, but i saw them a few years ago when i was 24 and i swear, i must have been the youngest "fan" there.
They just confirmed a show in Peru :?
I quit Peru, and all the bands go there now :?
DM just started their Tour of the Universe some days ago in Luxembourg
And the video projection during "Strange love" is causing some controversia. A sexual encounter between two lesbian girls... I think some of the audience will be distracted of the performance because of that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNljkXJ-v9I
Some youtube comments
"Oh god! I've never thoguht that DM were going to project something like that. I mean, I can watch that on porn if I want but not in a concert, shame on them. BTW great perfomance"

i don't think the video is really anything that surprising, considering it's DM.
and if it was some guy **** that girls toes on the video i guess nobody would say anything at all - although it would still be just as much of "porn" as the current video is.
which speaks volumes, i think.
i like the raven's eye screens on 'walking in my shoes' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_FyDAVd7fs&NR=1&fmt=18)

ok i'm not saying it's ok to show just about anything there and just call it 'art' or whatever. it isn't. but still, i do find it a bit funny to read some of those comments:
nudity is one thing.. porn is another ... thats what alot of us are having problems with and there should of been a disclaimer for the tour.. as those parents are in a difficult position nowpeople freak out seeing a girl **** another girls toes and had there been a video there where someone kills 50 people with an uzi and i bet that guy (or anyone else either) would be there today, demanding for disclaimers....
it's pretty hypocrite imo. there are videos with violence shows all the time (which i find a lot more serious issue) but people are just too numb to notice.
imo, if you go to a DM show then it's maybe not going to be a teddybears and pink fairies for the kids. or is DM something for the kids in the US these days (as i see many complainers come from the US)?
eh, i suppose some DMs fans over there really never listened to 'master and servant' etc....
seriously, i find some of those comments over there pretty funny.
Depeche Mode cancelled their concert in Greece (or maybe just posponed until tomorrow?)
The people was told about this when they were on the stadium :!:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwRHGWabFAU
He's in hospital, nothing terrible, and hopeully the concert will be re-scheduled for tomorrow night if he recovers fast.
Depeche Mode just cancelled their show in Warzaw, Poland.
Is the 7th concert cancelled in the tour. Hope Dave gets well very soon!
http://www.ticketpro.pl/jnp/en/wszystko/164482-depeche.html
Live Nation regret to inform that Depeche Mode concert will not take place on the planned day (May 23rd).
The official statement from the band says:
"Depeche Mode regret to announce that they are forced to cancel a further show on their "Tour of the Universe" in Warsaw at Gwardia Stadium on Saturday, May 23rd. Doctors have advised that more time is needed to allow singer, Dave Gahan, to fully recover from his recent illness and ensure that the tour can resume shortly.
Depeche Mode apologise to all their fans for this inconvenience and wish Dave a speedy recovery.
Ticket holders for the above show are advised to hold onto their tickets, as an announcement will be made shortly with regard to whether the date will be rescheduled, or cancelled altogether".
We ensure that, according to fans expectations, we are working on postponing the concert to a new date.
Regards,
Live Nation
with all those concerts cancelled, it looks like it's a shrinking universe for DM, not an expanding one (like for the rest of the world)...
i wonder what steven hawking might say about that.
what exactly is wrong with gahan? i don't read Dm forums at all and cannot bother starting to dig into it. but i did notice this on their official forum:
http://forums.depechemode.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29520
Posting any rumours about dave stops here and now!!!!!
CANT SAY IT MORE CLEARLY THAN THIS!
DONT POST ANY RUMOURS ABOUT DAVE !!!!!!!!!
DONT ARGUE ABOUT THIS RULE!!!!!
Both things will lead to being banned.
that made wonder if there's been some sort of official news about his problem/illness? id there hasn't been any, i don't fully understand why people are threatened with banning if they speculate something. because what else is there but rumours and speculation if there hasn't been any official news? i do understand that they don't want anyone spreading any stupid rumours just for fun, but fans will always want to discuss things like this anyway... so i find it a bit rough, to forbid all sort of discussion like that.
or am i missing something?
does anyone know if there's any bit of truth behind the rumours that gahan might have stomach/bowel cancer?
Quote from: japanesebaby on May 27, 2009, 19:13:33

In the beginning it was just some stomach troubles, nothing to worry about. But later on he had a surgery in New York and they found "something" (I have no idea what the word is in English) what can explain the rumour that you hear about it. But nothing is official until now. I'm afraid that they gonna cancellate all upcoming shows :?
DM cancels 6 more shows, Dave recovering
Depeche Mode have canceled/postponed 6 more shows - London, Pinkpop, Hamburg, both nights in Dusseldorf, and the first night in Leipzig. The tour is scheduled to resume on June 8th in Leipzig. But most importantly, best wishes to Dave, who had to have a malignant tumor removed from his bladder. : ( Get well soon, Dave! For more info on the shows, check DM.com.
(Thanks to COF)
I wish Dave all the best... :(
The shows are the less important thing in this moment...

How was the gig ?
:!:
Just got back from the "Arvika Festival"(Sweden).
And I must say that they did a good show,But they shortened the Set with
6 songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That left a bitter taste in my mouth i must say.
I went there to watch "Master and Servant" and "Strange Love", which I don´t think they´ve played since 1990.
And then they just cut the tracks from the set, It really pisses me of :smth011.
If someone has any idea of why they did that, please let me know....
(maybe they were just in a hurry to get to the next gig,but....)
If I´d know, I would have tried to get tickets to some other show.
And on top I bought a vocher to buy the Arvika show Live, and now i´m thinking about changing date and take some other show instead.
cheers Michael

so you saw the planned set list written down before/after the show?
anyway that really sucks. if they had to cut something, they could have cut some other tracks, some newer once - well just my opinion of course.
btw at some point i was remotely considering going to arvika but then decided not to as a lot better concert opportunities appeared in location closer to me/easier and cheaper for me to go to. it looks like i'm more and more
not regretting that decision.

I loved Depeche Mode.. they were pinned up on my wall, when I was a teen, along with The Cure,Eurythmics, DuranDuran ( no sloggoning me now, ok?!), Culture Club.. Pseudo Echo ( hello Aussie fans! :smth006 ).. all the bands who wore make-up.. :?

i hope 2010 would be free of cancellations. i saw someone suggesting that martin gore should sing more songs (was probably on COF), but personally i feel the less songs sung by him, definitely the better.

I agree. I don't think Martin is a bad singer, but something just strikes me as "wrong" when he sings lead. Strange, because I think his background vocals are perfectly suited for their music.
It could just be that "his" songs are not as good, but I really he just doesn't have the right voice to be a lead singer. :?:

totally agree about background vocals. by the way maybe it's a bit like the edge and bono: people often focus on bono's singing but the edge's backing vocals are really essential for u2's vocal sound. it's the same with DM i think, martin's backing vocals are really a quite essential part of their sound.
for me it also might be bout the quality of the songs he sings: even if i imagined dave singing those songs i'm not sure i'd still really care about those songs. then again there's plenty of Dm songs that i've always thought are really not that good, many sung by dave too. just meant that i don't know any really striking songs 8from the songwriting point of view) sung by martin.
I really admire martin lee gore. HE's genious..one of my fav artists after Robert Smith, for sure!
and i also love his singing.his voice is very dramatical and deep. i can cry listening to Home

Seems the biggest peruvian newspapper will broadcast part of the show
Show starts at 21h00 peruvian time: same time in east of USA, 04h00 in most european countries.
Have a look there in some hours!

Yep, that's the problem when some people from the press (in Peru or Chile) don't understand english

i'm so happy i was in the front row, it was really a fantastic concert. they are still one of the most best performers ever, one of the most best artist. that's why i love depeche mode so much :)
:smth061
Yeah indeed, I was in the first row as well (right side), I almost could smell Dave ;)

oh! that's so nice!
i was on left side, right in front of martin! :D
i'll post some pictures later :)
Finally I'm gonna see them coming Saturday :rocker
Greetings to everyone
Live from Antwerp :rocker now Nitzer Ebb, next DM :)
saw them last week. i'd like to say it was a great show but well, it was ok but nothing really awesome. ot boring but it all felt so much like a routine somehow. it was much better last time i saw them (4 years ago). actually it was not much different, lots of same songs played.
by the way, martin's guitar is being mixed just way too high, it made the sounds unnecessarily messy - the moment he went back behind the keyboards the sound became so much better. unfortunately they were only one or two songs where he did that. to my taste, he really should stop playing guitar in almost every song. i realized how much i miss the old more kraftwerk-ish DM.
some of the ewer arrangements just don't work really well, imo. 'in your room' (which should be great) sounded really energyless and dull (how come? :O), 'never let me down again' was a big let down too, because of the arrangement. a lot of people actually said the same after the show.
'world in my eyes' was good (partially because there was no guitar), one of the best moments musically. the new songs were ok but i don't find them such thrilling songs so hard to say i guess.
dave sounded good for the first half of the show, not so good during the second. but he still can keep the show going (even though i personally find it all a bit silly a lot of times now :P)

the best thing of the evening for me was the video of the raven on the screen during walking in my shoes', that was great:

on the video, i like it around 0:53 where it looks like the giant bird looks like he's planning to bite dave's head off.
the support, nitzer ebb was well, simply dreadful. sorry. but it felt like they played the same song over and over again for over 45 minutes - i've never written so many sms during a concert as during their performance. :-P

I had the same feeling. I guess it was the same 45 min during song that played in Belgium  I was writing my message here on curefans.com to pass the time and I never saw so good and much the roof from the
Antwerp Sportpaleis
For me it was the first time I saw Depeche Mode and maybe my expectation was too high... but it didn't "touch" me really. And strange but true I enjoyed the part, where Martin was singing, the most :?
Saw them during this tour in Los Angeles, CA & it was awesome :smth023
I had only wished I was sitting closer but I still managed to get decent pics & some videos.
Pics on my Flicker (link in my Just Joined post in the welcome section & videos I took on my Youtube (tigeroo25) :-D :smth023

that's surely reason to be worried haha
i think they suffer from the same as the cure (and many other "older" bands), they don't have quite the same momentum in the songs anymore. some songs are just dragging in tempo, not really rolling like they used to.
for instance 'never let me down again' was a real disappointment for me because of that.
for instance:
Depeche Mode - Never Let Me Down Again - Live @ Malmö Arena, Malmö, Sweden 2010/01/25 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEPTaiZI84w#ws)
even in 2006 it was still a lot lot better, not actually any faster but more relaxed, more going forward:
DEPECHE MODE "NEVER LET ME DOWN AGAIN" Live in Milan 2006 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uf8PWNfvxI#ws)
but oh well, they are old too.

It seems these pics are no longer accessible.
Yeah, yeah... I know I should have saved them to my hard drive, but things just aren't the same without some nice sweaty pics of Mr. Gahan to get my day going.

You aren't the only one who's been asking to see those pics again. I suppose I should go pro on flickr. In the meantime, you can always see a portion on my facebook page.
