What do you think would have happened if Lol won the legal battle in the 90's?

what do you think would have happened if lol had won the fight over join ownership of "the cure"? do you think robert would have continued as he has or the solo album would finally be made? without the cure name would he struggle for sales and now be semi retired? would many of us know the band? would they be considered even greater with the last album being (i think) wish? this is just a thread for us to speculate on this and other "what if?" moments in the bands history so no "well it didnt" replies please  ;)

EVEN ROBERT SAID LOL COULD WIN THE CASE IF HE TRIED HARDER!

THE POINT IS:

1) BOB, LOL AND MICHAEL WERE THREE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE CURE
2) LOL AND MICHAEL WERE PRETTY CLOSE IN EARLY NINETIES
3) THAT COULD MAKE THE TWO THIRDS OF THE FOUNDING TRIO ON ONE SIDE VS. ROBERT
4) THERE ARE TONES OF SIMILAR CASES THAT ENDED LIKE THAT

...

BUT:

I THINK EVEN IF LOL WON THE CASE - ROBERT AND THE CREW WOULD MAKE A SETTLEMENT AND BUY OUT THE RIGHT TO THE NAME. LOL WOULD WALK OUT WITH ENOUGH MONEY TO HAVE A GREAT LIFE...

...

OR MAYBE HE DID?!

Yeah... I think the band would have continued on - but money is such a weird issue with The Cure, because, as I understand it, anyone in the band at any given time gets equal shares of the profits/royalties.  That means that Lol has been getting 1/3 of the profits  of 3IB, Boys Don't Cry, 17 Sec, Faith and Pornography - 1/2 of Japanese Whispers - 1/3 of The Top - 1/5 of THOTD, KMKMKM and 1/6 of Disintegration.  This is the one aspect that (again, from what I have read) Robert has been undeniably fair.

It would be interesting, though - I would bet money that no matter what happened we all would still have ended up listening to Wild Mood Swings - a record like that was just inevitable.

What do you mean?

If Lol had won, the Cure would go on. They'd just have to write an extra check, depending upon whether not the case was over the ownership of the name/trademark, and not just royalties (pleading ignorant to the facts of the case here). If it was a matter of the trademark, he'd certainly want them to continue, as that's pretty much free money for life. That's a cut of merchandise, albums sales, maybe even tours. If that was the case, he'd be silly to take the name, especially when more money is to be made "renting" it out.

Who knows, perhaps he really was owed some damages.  :?

Anyhow, I'm sure he's making some money off of the remasters, as those songs are undeniably credited to him (in part). Good for him.

i wonder what porl gets from the 3ib reissue then? isnt he on like 3 tracks from the second disc and thats it?

What I meant by "We'd still would've been listening to WMS anyway" was that Robert was most likely leaning towards that direction for an album.  He wrote the songs after the trial and what looked like the dissolution of the band (only Robert & Perry were left at one point).  Wild Mood Swings happened, I think, because Robert needed to take things in a different direction - whether this was a solo album or a Cure album, as long as he was making another record we were going to get something very colorful, disjointed, difficult and oddly endearing.  I mean, WMS isn't a fantastic record, but it's the Cure's cutest record.

what do you think would happen if simon left the band? he has been therfor so long i cant see how he could be replaced

Bloodflower

Without Simon, there's no band. This isn't 1982/3/4 anymore. I don't think Robert has the will to carry on just on his own (with a rotating cast) again. I think he'd go off and release his solo album(s), record another, and sit down to score some films.

 :-D

AND WHAT ABOUT THAT ROBERT SMITH SOLO ALBUM THAT EVERY LONGTERM CURE FAN RANTS ABOUT EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS THEN?!

THE POINT IS TEH CURE ARE NOT THAT OLD BAND AND THERE IS ABOUT A DOZEN ALBUMS IN FRONT OF THEM SO THERE WILL BE REUNIONS, SACKINGS AND BITTER ACCUSATIONS FOR AT LEAST 20 YEARS MORE...

yeah i think simon leaving would end it all aswell.

that's what always made me respect simon so much: he's definitely among my favorite musicians of all times, all styles. permanently on the top of my cool list for sure.
maybe he didn't ever really flourish in the field of song-writing as much as could have been expected if he were in some other band perhaps, and he never says much or catches that certain on-the-spot-light kind of attention. and it's robert who has collected the occasional achievement awards either for himself or for the band etc. - but imo simon has that powerful silent aura that over the years has slowly been  being built on his professionality and reliability and without which the cure would just come all tumbling down today. he's that rock solid silent figure there that you can feel you could always rely on, no matter what - because maybe you actually couldn't always rely on robert the same way, to be honest...? maybe simon's presence always balanced out that certain kind of insecurity that i think robert somehow always had about him... and ok, maybe simon has had it easy in certain respect, compared to robert. i mean he never had to stand in the spotlight the way robert had to, and it's róbvious that  however well you did your job of of standing there in the spotlight you're just bound to end up being associated some more or less controversial things/issues in a long run anyway - your decisions and doings are bound to get criticized, however justified they were. and so, in some respects one could say it's actually pretty easy to respect simon and actually often quite hard to find any really bad words to say about him. anyway, had it been someone else there in his place and doing his job, that someone could have remained totally on-the-background kind of guy and could have been easily replacable at any times - like some other cure members have been/still are. yet he never was such a character. on the contrary, robert of today would totally look like a permanently broken-winged figure without simon - and the longer the cure go on the more simon's iconic role seems to be enhanced.
i think it's really great and worth some extra attention, the way in which his stature has slowly been solidified over the years. the  admiration and respect he gets is deserved, imo.

I sometimes wonder if there isn't more than friendship between Robert and Simon. I mean.... Well, between the infamous kiss at the news conference and Simon's permanent place in the band (he's only not been in the band for five full years, after all). That we haven't heard much in the way of Mary in awhile only adds to this.

But who knows? It's purely speculation anyway.
