Title: Favourite 10 albums (outside of The Cure)
Post by: tigermilk on April 03, 2008, 03:47:48
Rules are:
1... NO CURE ALBUMS (so fans on this forum can see what other people are into)
2... ONE ALBUM PER ARTIST (you CAN'T put more than 1 album per band)

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Brilliant album! Morrissey sings with such passion, and the lyrics are straight from the heart. This album always gives me the same chills as the Disintegration record does. If you don't have it, why don't you have it??

Radiohead - The Bends
Robert himself likes this album but then again who doesn't. Radiohead's finest moment (although some would call OK Computer their classic). I prefer the sounds on this record. "Planet Telex" is a tremendous opener, while "Street Spirit" is possibly one of my favourite all time closers together with The Cure's "Faith".

PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
Rough and rugged, PJ Harvey sounds like a woman possessed on this record. It's almost scary but more thrilling. I absolutely adore this album.

Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll
My favourite Cocteau Twins album often changes, from Heaven Or Las Vegas, Treasure or Milk & Kisses, but this is probably the one I listen to the most. It's so dreamy and shoegazey, it never gets old.

Bjork - Homogenic
This is one of my favourite albums to drive to and it has a lot of good memories for me :)

Damien Rice - O
Speaking of memories... oh boy. This guy from Ireland really knows how to pull all the strings. Seeing him live was the greatest show I've ever seen outside of The Cure.

Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See
"Fade Into You" is one of my favourite songs ever. If you like to lay back, relax and watch the clouds then this one is for you!

Cat Power - Moon Pix
I love her voice from this period. It's certainly changed over the years but I like the 1998 period the best and "Cross Bones Style" was the song that first got me into Cat Power.

Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk
Jingle jangle at it's best. Glasgow sure produce some great bands. Songs for the awkard kids in the schools, the people in crap jobs who are sick of drinking the coffees that "taste like washing up", and those who are madly in love!

Massive Attack - Blue Lines
I remember when I first put the CD in my player and I couldn't get to the second track, I just kept repeating track 1 "Safe From Harm" over and over. I was fixated on that song. When I did finally move on I discovered more great tunes that were way ahead of their time. I also really really enjoy Portishead's Dummy album and Tricky's Maxinquaye record. For me they all go together like a great trilogy... if you own one you have to own the others too!

i can't think of 10 without thinking about 15 at once... so i'll pick only 5 now.
the way i understand the question of "favourite albums": these are very likely not THE 5 albums that are most often on my playlist but more like 5 things that i just seem to be very attached to, for several different reasons:

nine inch nails: fragile [one of the few non-cure albums which have been almost shocking listening experiences, when first discovered]
kate bush: hounds of love
kent: hagnesta hill [linked to a certain period in my life which i'd really don't even  want to recall, that's why i rarely listen to it - but it'll hold fast on this list nevertheless]
porcupine tree: deadwing
pj harvey: is this desire?

instead, i think we should make it only five or maybe even three - because THEN people would really have to choose carefully and really think/compare/choose well!
come on, 20 is just getting wayyy too easy... it loses meaning.

so make it three! what are the three ones that matter most?

Title: Re: Favourite 10 albums (outside of The Cure)

OK then, if I had to choose only 3 non-Cure albums - let's say for a desert island trip, or something - then it would have to be these ones, as I never get tired of listening to them  :P :

Bjørk - Debut
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

No it isn't!  There are artists I didn't list on either list that I would have liked to. And there are other albums from artists listed that I also like just as much as the ones listed.  Not easy chosing just one.

Sigh. Fine...3.

Mantaray--Siouxsie
B-Day--Beyonce
Deviation--Jayne County

it is... think of it this way: your house is on fire, you can only grab 3 things with you while you run out and all the rest of it WILL burn - what three things will you take?
try the same with "what 20 things you would take?" and surely you'd start grabbing all kinds of not so important things with you. the smaller the number, the more it matters.

(or at least should matter. i do admit that in a burning house situation i might panic and grab something really silly, like yesterday's newspaper, toothbrush and an umbrella. :-P
so maybe it's a really question of easy/difficult: maybe what i meant was that it's somehow more interesting to read through other people's lists when they are really focused - long lists are a lot less profiled somehow.
at least for me it's that way.

by the way i'm sitll not sure what three albums i'd pick. but i'd leave the umbrella, definitely.)

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Amazing album, These songs are so amazingly crafted from start to finish, every single track has something to love about it.

Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
Choosing just one album from these guys was torture their first 5 albums are all gems. This is the definitive Manics album though, Motorcycle Emptiness and Little Baby Nothing are unbeatable.

Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
The same goes for this one, I had an extremely difficult time choosing between this and Boys for Pele. This one is better for the simple fact that it doesnt have any weak tracks wheras BFP has 2 or 3.

Pulp - This is Hardcore
Another tough choice, this and Different Class are both totally solid from start to finish, but this one has a wayyyyyy better opener.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
This one gets a hands down victory. No matter how many half-assed reunion albums these guys put out this will always be their masterwork.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
These guys have too many albums, too many great albums, and crap albums. You gotta love Sonic Youth tho.

Talulah Gosh - Backwash
Best twee pop album ever, a shame they only ever released one before fading into obscurity.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico
No explanation needed.

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
I actually hated this one at first but it grew on me insanely, Its the deepest and most original White Stripes album, very underrated.

Neil Young - Harvest
I decided not to put any live albums on my list otherwise Weld wouldve definitely taken this spot. Its a truly classic album

Honorable Mentions:
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Dave Matthews Band - Crash
Desaparcedos - Read Music, Speak Spanish
The Elected - Sun Sun Sun
The Indelicates - American Demo
Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
REM - Reckoner
Radiohead - OK Computer
U2 - The Joshua Tree

Oh yeah, how could I not have included this LP in my first list?????? I recall when it hit the airwaves, WOW, what a box about the ears this was! I really reckon that this album was as exciting if not more so (as it was closer to my 'generation') than the Sex Pistols LP back in the 70's... for getting teens 'angry' again anyways! Glad you like it to! I wonder how Mr Cobain would be (musically) nowadays had he lived on?!

Now, bloody entertain me!!!! (hehehe)

Einstuerzende Neubauten: Haus der Luege

Nice! This has recently become my favourite Cocteau Twins album. It keeps changing normally between Treasure and Blue Bell Knoll, but I think Victorialand is breathtaking. I even picked it up on Vinyl even though I don't have a record player, haha. Whales Tails hypnotizes me!! Great album, I really want to get a record player because apparently it's really good when you play it at a different speed, of 33rpm and not 45rpm. Would be an interesting listen!

I have it on vinyl too! It is really worthwhile, because the magnificent 23 Envelope artwork really shines... Curiously enough, I think I remember that the first time I played the record it was at wrong speed. I only noticed it when Liz Fraser's voice came in - it sounded kind of weird.... (  :-D )

Nice to see "Revolver" in there. One of the Beatles' best albums, although "Rubber Soul" might be just as good or even better... the same for Kate Bush, great album, probably her most creative, although "Hounds of Love" might beat it on a purely emotional level.

The Banshees and Zep selections are kind of strange, though...
"Superstition" is clearly the worst Banshees album, for me. Too commercial, too many keyboards, too many "easy melodies", it lacks the intensity and depth of their best works.
And "Houses of the Holy" has good songs ("No Quarter" is magical...) but it feels somewhat inconsistent, as an album. I really think that their first 2 albums are the best...

It's kind of strange seeing many people here chose 'Head over Heals" as the Twins best record... I mean, it's a transition album, it lacks the overall darkness and intensity of their debut "Garlands" and it still doesn't show the original beauty they would display in "Treasure" and "Victorialand". And as a collection of songs, surely they have made better? There's 2 or 3 songs in there that sound like filler to me...

5. Van Morrison - Moondance

Nice to see Van Morrison on a "best of" list, but "Moondance" doesn't strike me as being one of his best albums... I mean, there's 2 songs that go "la-la-la" and another song with a chorus that is just "everyone, everyone, everyone, everyone". Not particularly inspired, is it?

I would guess you know "Astral Weeks"? That would be the most obvious choice for best album. But also albums like "Veedon Fleece" and "Saint Dominic's Preview" show Van Morrison at his deepest, down-to-earth and transcendental at the same time...

Do you really think that is his best album?  Nick Cave has such a vast and great discography to chose from... What about "Tender Prey"? "Your Funeral My Trial"? "Let Love In"? "From Her to Eternity"?

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
This one gets a hands down victory. No matter how many half-assed reunion albums these guys put out this will always be their masterwork.

Agreed, there. If paired down to a single CD, "Mellon Collie" could have been a great contender, but since it was not, "Siamese Dream" wins easily. I also really like their first album and think that the often underrated "Adore" is their "Disintegration" (that is, it's the Pumpkins most beautiful album although not their very best)...

Now, that is a good surprise...  :smth001

People into Simple Minds usually like them starting from "New Gold Dream" (a very good album) or even later albums, the earlier stuff gets forgotten. Then there is a minority who likes them until NGD (which really seems to be the landamark album that devides the bands's career between the "underground"/"experimental"/"alternative" era and the "huge mainstream success" era) and more or less hate everything after that.

I suppose I am of the real-small-minority that truly likes everything they did until "Street Fighting Years" (a very mainstream album but sometimes really beautiful), with the exception of "Once Upon a Time".
But 1980-81 Minds was about as great as The Cure of the same period for me. They are groundbreaking, intense and great at creating atmospheres. They would only lose to The Cure by a narrow margin, and that's because for me "Seventeen Seconds" beats every other 80's album with the possible exception of "Closer" and "Pornography".

I could be wrong, but didn't the Cocteau Twins get their name from a Simple Minds song? A song which was originally called 'A Cure'. Interesting little fact!

well, all i can say that in this case your post could have been written by me - so haha finally we agree about something. ;P

the early minds are were truly remarkable band, personally i rate them higher than even joy division (not to mention something like the banshees etc.). the cure only wins by a narrow margin, that's true.
i don't dislike everything they did after 'new gold dream', a good part of that album is still pretty good (although i think the best part of it is stuff like 'colours fly and catherine wheel' and not the singles). and like you said, i do admit that they somehow maintained a capability for creating genuinely impressive glimpses of beauty  and power long after they became otherwise overly pompous in the late 80s. anyway, i'm just repeating what you said...

i do find it a real pity that their early output still remains so overlooked today. their early works, they experimental era from 'reel to real cacophony' to 'sister feelings call', would surely be worth rediscovering for many!

"Nowhere" and "Juju" are incredible aren't they? And yes, you guessed right, I'm a big shoegaze fan. I'd say about 90% of my iPod is shoegaze actually. I love "Isn't Anything" as well, it's brilliant, but I like "Loveless" just a little more because it was my first album of theirs. I remember how I felt when I was listening to it for the first time, I was in complete awe and never realised music so atmospheric and layered existed and 'Only Shallow' still to this day blows my mind. "Isn't Anything" would definately be in my top 20 for sure! I've got some of their earlier stuff too, but nothing compares to these two albums. It's great to see another MBV fan on here.

Well, I'm not sure if I deserve being called a MBV fan, because "Loveless" does nothing for me, really. It doesn't rock and there are also no songs that reach the beauty of some ballads on "Isn't Anything". It bores me... But it's true I am a fan of "Isn't Anything" and also some of their singles/EPs stuff (like "You made me realise").

I just remembered one thing. Do you like "Psychocandy" by The Jesus & Mary Chain? I think the seeds of the shoegaze scene are in part already there... (their second album, "Darklands", is also very good, but much more "traditional" in sound).

Heck yes!! "Psychocandy" is excellent and definately a classic. The distortion and fuzz was awesome, and the inspiration to many bands. The Jesus & Mary Chain had so many great songs and albums. The first song I learnt to play on guitar was "Just Like Honey", the first track from Psychocandy, I love the video too. And I like how the drummer always stood up when he played, very Velvet Underground of him!

I agree that those 3 bands do go together, as the 3 essential trip-hop acts. But somehow I always think that the Massive Attack album that belongs together with "Dummy" and "Maxinquaye" is "Protection"... I see "Blue Lines" more as the precursor and the other 3 albums as the best examples of trip-hop at its finest hour.

By the way, do you know this:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:kpfpxqlhld6e

It's a very good trip-hop album from 1995, from a band that seems to have completely vanished afterwards.

Well, those 2 are classics, indeed. Anyway, i didn´t mean to diminish the importance or quality of "Blue Lines". I actually rate Massive Attack's first 3 albums just about the same. The thing I meant is that "Blue Lines" is somewhat different from "classic" trip-hop: quite a few songs have more of a groove / soul-jazz influence in them, they are also often quite mid-tempo, whereas trip-hop, by rule, is SLOW.

Alright then, 10 of my current favorites, no order. Most of them have been mentioned before (Cure minds think alike?). Some of them I don't listen to that often anymore, but they still mean a lot to me.

1. Kate Bush - The Dreaming
(Hounds of Love has less weaker tracks, love it a lot, but this is the one of her records I return to most often. Weird Kate armed with drums, didgeridoos (spelling checked), and a whole lot of experimental fun)

2. Fiona Apple - When The Pawn...
(Possibly one of the longest album titles in musical history (90 words), I'll spare you by not typing it all out here. One of those albums you return to to gather strength from. Passionate and intense, with my favorite moments including Fiona singing her witty, poetic lyrics in her low, menacing voice while hammering out jazzy piano romps, accompanied by a drummer)

3. Depeche Mode - Violator
(Let me show you the world in my eyes...)

4. Pixies - Doolittle
(Big shake on the box car moving...)

5. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
(I will let you down, I will make you hurt...)

6. Cocteau Twins - Victorialand
(My favorite of theirs varies too. Glorious band)

7. Smashing Pumpkins - Rotten Apples: Greatest Hits
(Some of my fondest memories from my early teens are of taking walks on the jogging tracks in the woods, sometimes during the night, alone with a backpack full of records and a CD player. One of the records, apart from Kent's Hagnesta Hill (nr. eight), would usually be Rotten Apples, my start out point with the band before moving on to their studio albums)

8. Kent - Hagnesta Hill
(Brilliant Swedish lyrics, simple yet profound)

9. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads
(Feels like a typical "angry moody teenager" pick, but that's exactly what it was at the time)

10. Björk - Vespertine
(Hard to pick a favorite of hers (Post comes very close too), but this album is great to listen to in one sitting)

A little upload to my list: I'm now convinced The Kick inside is my favorite Kate Bush album, as a whole. It holds together so well, and the songs are great in themselves, of course. I've also fallen hard for Tori Amos Little Earthquakes, brilliant. Listening to it right now in fact... If I chuck out Murder Ballads it'll fit in. I don't think there's one Cave album (of the ones I've listened to) that I like in its entirety anyway...
