8:13 Long intro (Ocean sounds)
8:16 New song...slow and melodic

8:29 Robert is really struggling :(
8:31 A crew member just brought Robert some tea.
8:46 People in the front are sitting! :? Booooooooooo!

I have to say that I'm quite delighted by this. It's the closest The Cure will have ever come to where I live. :smth023
I think there is a reason for that
hey shame on you jeff, always picking an bullying youngsters, despite your orations in certain other thread here :smth011

i wish i will be able to say the same when the european dates are published. fingers cross...

:smth087
but if it has to happen... let's see:
helsinki - hammerfest: 1628 kilometers
helsinki - london: 2034 kilometers
well, it's still better than royal albert hall was... 8)
(actually, i've been to hammerfest once, many many years ago: we drove there with our little family car, all the way up north... The northernmost city in the world! or more like a village hehe  but awesome scenery, fjords and the ice sea  it was in june, right before midsummer but it was still totally barren there, nothing green and growing anywhere - and the seawater was cooooollllddddd!)
i can't believe that they are finally playing in kansas city for the first time ever. all through high school i never thought it would happen, and now i move away and 10 years later they finally play there. crazy.
there were some local rumors to the effect that played either in 1986 or 1987. the 86 rumor claimed that they played and were pelted with corn husks (???) and thus they vowed never to return. another rumor i heard was that robert was superstitious because of kansas city's proximity to one of the seven gates of hell (which is supposedly at a burned-down church where satanic rituals used to be performed in stull, kansas). what i believe is the truth- someone i knew met simon backstage at one of the st. louis shows and asked him why the cure had never played in kansas city and supposedly he replied 'i didn't know that such a place existed.'
seven gates of hell? ok...

as much as i respect and admire mr. gallup (since he's one of the coolest people on the planet!), sometimes i do get a feeling he's not quite that bright:
Robert:"... I've got an older brother and sister and Margaret used to paint our tortoise with nail varnish so it was psychedelic. I thought that's how they were for a few years"
"If you take their shells off do they die?" ponders Simon Gallup.
What? Of shock?
"No", points out Robert, "They're sort of attached to it".

:?
me and my friends are going to the Chicago show and after seeing that KC was added, we were like WTF?!. 4 hours closer. THEN, we saw that it was on a MONDAY. we just can't have that..haha don't get me wrong, we'd see them any day of the week but our Chicago tix are for a saturday and that has all kinds of possibilities..hehehe
This show is finally up on ticketmaster! now it's just waiting time untill they actually go onsale!
Wasn't this supposed to go onsale today?
Hadn't heard anything about tickets going on sale today. The venue's page still says TBA.
http://www.kcstarlight.com/concert.aspx?pgID=1161
i called starlight, and the guy said he didn't know that that i should just keep checking. :smth011
Tickets go on sale March 10 at 10 a.m.
I know people go on about how Red Rocks is the best venue of the tour, but I doubt this is far behind:

Yeah, it looks like a pretty cool venue. imo, when the sun is setting at the Gorge in George, well...that can't be beat. Michael Stipe said it best as he turned around on stage at the Gorge in '95, "I feel like I'm standing on the world's biggest postcard".
Info on the Starlight:
http://www.kcstarlight.com/FileUploads/Starlight%20Tech%20Pack.pdf (http://www.kcstarlight.com/FileUploads/Starlight%20Tech%20Pack.pdf)
Seats 8105. Presale started today using the password INBETWEEN. Tomorrow's password is ROCK.
general onsale is Saturday.
Got the scoop from the venue....midnight curfew, non-professional cameras allowed. Show starts at 7.
so, no-one reporting tonight from kansas?
dorothy? toto?
I will be reporting from KC tonight. I have arrived at my hotel, and should be meeting up with another curefans member, who shall remain anonymous :smth080
Here's to hoping some things get changed up tonight, although since this is the first Cure sure in this neck of the woods, I wouldn't be surprised to see only "the hits", which would mean no Faith :smth011

I know all about the work/sleep schedule. For Rosemont, I was at the bar after the show until 12:30, then screwed around on this site until 1:30 or so. I was back up at 3:30 to get to the airport for a 6am flight back home. I was supposed to go to work after that, but needless to say I didn't make it yesterday.
Then, I had a 6am flight this morning to KC, and have a 7am flight back home tomorrow! (note to self....stop taking flights first thing in the morning!)
Just saw this from RS on the official site:

I'll be having myself one of those 6am flights on Wednesday. :smth100 I think the rest of my flights are a bit later (please be later). That Denver one was cheap and about the only one I could get to where I wanted, when I needed.
Yup, they seem like a good idea when you book it, but then when you realize that you won't get back to the hotel from the show until at least midnight and need to be at the airport 2 hours before your flight, you kind of need to weigh your options...have a few drinks after the show or go to bed. Somehow Mr. Beer always wins that one! :smth030

Honestly, it was very useful when we were in Paris. Actually, crowbi_wan recognized us in the Paris metro (where are thousands of people as you can imagine) because I was wearing the shirt. Same near Bercy, and even inside the concert (soulmate). Just a thought... :)
Ahh!...also in Oberhausen. I could meet silversand because I was wearing the curefans shirt. Otherwise it would have been impossible.

Chicago was my 3rd show this tour and I have yet to spot one (curefans shirt). Of course, since my shirt is home in PA and I've only been home once in the last month (and forgot the shirt!), it is a little difficult for me to wear it!
I am planning on bringing it to Houston and throwing it on stage. I am close enough to do that without a problem.

I think the best for Robert's health would be to reduce the show time to two hours, honestly. But if he wants to continue up to three hours, a "Carnave visors + lostwishes + big hand instrumental" set would fit just perfect in this context.
Of course this will never happen...

Thanks to j for the updates. :smth023
j said no setlists could be given out and the sound guy wouldn't give the name of the first or last song :?
I spoke with the sound guy at Rosemont and asked him to save me a copy of the setlist tonight. When I went up to him, he said that he wasn't allowed to give out the list anymore. I asked him if he could at least give me the title of the first and last song of the mainset, and he said that he wasn't allowed to give out the name yet. Maybe they haven't officially been named? He did say that they would most likely be opening and closing the mainset with those 2 songs for a while.
I have to say that Robert sounded horrible, but he did plug right through. He apologized many times, and even said that "in 30 years of singing, I've never had a throat like this".

yeahhhh two new songs!!
I'm waiting .........
Just got back from KC.
The first outdoor concert of the year (and a full moon ). I had a feeling it wouldn't be just any old show...
Well, the new opener was fantastic. I'm sure it was the "slow and lush" song that was described in the recent soundchecks. A great start, but after that Robert's vocal problems really started to become obvious. He sounded really strained and had to sing in a really low, soft voice most of the time.
But musically, it was one of the tighest performances I've heard in a long time. Porl especially was on fire, and he was very clear in the mix. Overall sound was excellent.
Setlist was above average, and I finally got to see The Kiss live. One of the best versions of that I've ever heard. Robert sounded incredibly sick on that one, and in a weird way it enhanced the mood of the song.
Then they ended the show with a condensed "old school" encore. I think Robert really needed to stop at that point. While like everyone else I was hoping they'd close with Faith, I think it would have been a really weird version with Robert's voice the way it was. I really doubt he felt up to it.
I really admire him for making these shows go on, but I'm also really worried he's destroying his voice in the process. I think a week off might do him some good, as bad as that may be for some fans. I really hope he gets better soon.
But music-wise, it was still a great show - so definitely not a lost cause. I was in the 5th row and took a lot of nice pictures, but right now I'm just too damn tired to write or do much more.
I'm pretty sure the second new song was the one known as "Baby Rag Dog Book".
http://curefans.com/index.php/v/live/2008/northamericantour/rosemont/P1000762.JPG.html?action=gallery
Very upbeat, but not poppy. It had a really long instrumental intro with the band just jamming out. I thought it was pretty cool.
i guess so,
it's like 5.40 AM over there!!!!
enjoy your rest!!!
and thanks for the review.

let's hope he recovers soon, but i understand what you mean --- it must have been a peculiar experience to hear this (and a painful one to sing).
the evil part of me makes me really want to hear this version
thanks for the review, and the description of the 2 new songs --- now i'm getting more & more curious about the new album.
Glad to see that you made it home safely, Caley. I have updated the setlist. Because of wonderful modern technology, crowbi_wan received some texts out of order, even though I sent hem in order. Brian blames the Verizon guy, and I think I may have to agree with him here!
I have confirmed the correct order and have made the changes in the first post of this thread.

I really admire him for making these shows go on, but I'm also really worried he's destroying his voice in the process. I think a week off might do him some good, as bad as that may be for some fans. I really hope he gets better soon.
Where'd you go to medical school? A little throat steroids & Rob's got it all figured out. He'll sing low & soft for the next show or two but I'm most definatly sure he'll be better in like <three days. Maybe Cold will make it into the setlist. Whiskey & tea.

I went to medical school at Clown University, but thanks for asking. :?
Thanks for the review there, Caley. I've heard a few people mention how tight the show was musically. Nice that Porl was clear tonight. His level might have been increased do to Robert's voice.
 I didn't even notice while updating the setlist, but they didn't play alt.end! It's about time that one was left out

another 2 new songs?!
great!
does anyone know the title of these 2 new songs? :smth100
"Baby Rag Dog Book" ?.. any feedback yet?
I'm sorry to hear that Robert's voice is affected. God , he sounded so great in 2007 here in the land of OZ.. ( when I say God.. of course I mean Robert Smith ! 8)
I really think they needed a longer break! IMHO :smth023
What was the Rag Dog song like?
good to see that they at least start to introduce more new songs, with Robert's problems quite logical they had to shorten the set.

nevermind, i didn't see the "heavy rock" comment til now
Cold! Haha.
Interesting the sound guy said these new opening & closing songs will now be the norm. I'll miss plainsong/disintegration even though i won't be there, but maybe a disintegration encore? Seems the band are growing in confidence with the new stuff, even though Robert is sick.

They've done the Plainsong/Disintegration encore with this line-up. Would be surprised to see it come out again if they continue with the new opener/closer. I'd actually welcome it just to break the monotony.

I can confirm that there was a Disintegration encore on the list for last night, including Disintegration and Plainsong.

Well, the new opener was fantastic. I'm sure it was the "slow and lush" song that was described in the recent soundchecks.
I'm so curious about this new song.
If "Underneath the Stars" is the real name, I can only imagine how suggestive it has been to hear that outdoor with the full moon...
Probably that was not a coincidence.
Hope Robert will get well soon, for all the efforts he's making for all of us, for those incredible things he always prepares...
I'm terribly excited for the new album.
Thank you lostflower4 for your post-concert impressions.

I don't know where those people were? Up in the hills?
The crowd around me was very crazy, including the 7 foot tall guy in front of me, jumping up and down the entire show.
Lots of crazy screamers behind me too, including one guy shouting complete gibberish. A few people up front sat down during some songs, but it wasn't so bad. Although one guy did start shouting to them, "Get off your fuckin' asses!" :D
There's some really poor translations of Robert speak on COF. For example, it says:
End of The Only One - Robert "You guys are not helping me out very much, perhaps if we play something you like it will be different, which is the way it f*cking should be."
But he actually said:
"I'm not going to talk to you very long. Believe me, I've suffered more than you have... Which is exactly the way it should be."
Huge difference there. :!:
any chance for download a new songs?

great photos.
so sorryto hear about Rob's throat. i hope it gets better.
he seems to have given his all at this concert, despite it.
Transcript of what RS said during the show:
Before Pictures of You- "Thank You. Hello."
Before A Night Like This- "Thank you. As you probably figured, I shouldn't be up here singing tonight. I was told not to, but you've (or we've) come all this way, so we shall persevere and maybe there will be that magic moment when it will all kick in. Until then, just imagine that Serge Gainsbourg sings The Cure."
Before The Walk "It's kind of (darkly?) funny if this is the first time anyone's seen us, which I suspect it is...so I'll keep it (pretty low?) tonight."
Before The Only One- "Thank you."
Before FTEOTDGS- "Look on the bright side- I could have spent my whole night (unknown)- how the f*ck would that work? Not much help for you, I know, but believe me, I am suffering more than you are. Which is exactly how it should be. So, let's (cover up?)"
Before A Strange Day- "Thank you."
Before Never Enough- "Thank you. If you knew the songs better, (unintelligible)."
Before Perfect Boy- "A new song. This won't sound like the record. The Perfect Boy."
Before Wrong Number- "Thank you. f*ck I realize how much I miss my voice (unintelligible). If only I'd (stopped that night Serge) I could have ended up (unintelligible) f*cking (unintelligible)."
After New Song 2- "Thank you. I apologize for my voice (and nothing else?)."
Before If Only Tonight- "Thank you. But seriously, this is f*cking killing me. You know, in 30 years of singing, I have never ever had a throat like this. (clears throat) But it was either like, not- see if I can't if I can't sing then everyone comes here everyone does all this- and I go 'Oh No No' and the doctors says 'You shouldn't go on because you can't sing' and I know I can't f*cking sing, but, we still play the songs, so once again, I apologize for my voice but it is either this or nothing and I think this is alot better than nothing. Thank you very much for bearing with me through it and when we come back, I'll sound alot sweeter, I promise you. The next 2, you might notice are really long instrumentals (unintelligible)".
After The Kiss- "Thank you!"
Before Boy's Don't Cry- "Thank you."
After KAA- "Thank you, good night. Thank you."
is this show available 4 download?
i'm so curious 2 hear his voice

Hi guys - is there Kansas bootleg in the space?
I haven't found anything as yet.
I live in Des Moines, so I could have easily made this show, but I just couldn't the time freed up. Having my first show be at the Hollywood Bowl sure made up for it though. :)
Ok, really late here... But I finally finished uploading the rest of my photos to the gallery.
I actually bought a new camera just for this, and although I didn't have much time to practice with it I think I got some really nice pics.
I also took one pic each of Simon and Porl's roadies, who look eerily similar to their respective band members.
Or if you prefer, you can download the full set directly from here, with a few extra pics from the 65dos set and some random ones I took on my travels:

I would gladly listen to it, although Robert's voice sucked because of illness, the others played so well!
Is there some "evil" spirit in this city? Just found that in 2006, Depeche Mode had to cancel the show after 50 minutes due Dave's laryngitis (http://www.netmusiccountdown.com/inc/news_article.php?id=10278). And as all you have readed in this topic, Robert had serious problems with this throat. Strange coincidences...

Don't think so... Robert got sick while in Canada prior to the Kansas City show, and apparently Dave got sick from being in Mexico previous to their show.
Similarly, Depeche Mode had to cancel their Chicago concert while Robert started developing his voice problems at the Chicago-area show from last year.
Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails also got sick at Lollapalooza in Chicago last year, which was their first show after playing in Canada.

No, I don't think anyone has posted that. Very funny you should mention it though, as I just happened to stumble upon it a few days ago by accident.
Anyway, I think it's just further proof that the opening 65dos set was one of the loudest shows ever played, and that I'm not just imagining it:
Sat through the U.K. instrumental act 65Daysofstatic, who are perhaps the loudest band I've ever heard. Like an industrial version of Explosions in the Sky – or a perfect match for Placebo – the synth-terrorists created a sonic boom of sound that was mixed at almost painful levels, even with earplugs. Still, they were a nice enough diversion for a half-hour set.Seriously, the Mogwai show I saw a couple weeks ago was NOTHING compared to this, in terms of volume. 65dos was just way too loud. I couldn't enjoy it at all, even though I really like their music. :x
Seeing them play in broad daylight to a crowd that only seemed to be waiting for The Cure didn't help either...
By the way, this pic:
Looks suspiciously like the one I took at the beginning of the show:
i also remember the loudness 65dos in general, on those dates that i saw them (not this one though ;)).
since i didn't know their music before that time so i couldn't even try and start recognizing any of their songs. but just being able to hear this one big sonic near-painful boom didn't quite help much with trying to memorize/remember anything much about what they played. :/
funny how the pics look so similar, the same angle and everything.
by the way there are some nice pics in the slideshow linked to that review mentioned above:

I finally got to see The Kiss live. One of the best versions of that I've ever heard. Robert sounded incredibly sick on that one, and in a weird way it enhanced the mood of the song.
let's hope he recovers soon, but i understand what you mean --- it must have been a peculiar experience to hear this (and a painful one to sing).
