QuoteFormer Cure drummer Lol Tolhurst, ex-Siouxsie and the Banshees drummer Budgie and producer Jacknife Lee have teamed up to form a new supergroup ...
Announced today (Monday July 24), the trio have shared details of their debut album' Los Angeles' – released in November via Play It Again Sam. The record will feature guest appearances from Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, U2's The Edge, Civil Rights avant-gardist Lonnie Holley, Mary Lattimore, Starcrawler's Arrow de Wilde and Mark Bowen from IDLES.

Tolhurst and Budgie, who first met in 1979 when The Cure were on the road with The Banshees, had always longed to work together before they found themselves together in LA piecing a project together with Jacknife. Over time, the city itself would prove to be the muse for the songs.

"We picked the right people," Tolhurst told NME of the guests they landed upon. "We gave people free reign. They did all the lyrics – apart from 'Train With No Station' which I did with my son – and they were responding with whatever the music made them feel. Somehow we ended up with this very coherent album.

"We said, 'This has to be called 'Los Angeles' because it's about the place we made it and our experience there."

QuoteFollowing his run of Stories of Surrender shows with Bono, and the release of Telefís' Special Report remix collection earlier this year, Jacknife Lee is back with a new collaborative project. The iconic Dublin producer/multi-instrumentalist, The Cure's Lol Tolhurst, and Budgie from Siouxsie & The Banshees are set to release their debut album together, Los Angeles, on November 3, via Play It Again Sam – and ahead of the release, they've shared the title track, featuring Peter Murphy of LCD Soundsystem.

The 13-track album, created over the last four years, promises to delve into "freedom and slavery, beauty and decay, hope and despair."

Finally, a nice band picture:

QuoteThe team of The Cure keyboardist Lol Tolhurst, Siouxsie and the Banshees drummer Budgie, and super-producer Jacknife Lee have recruited Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream for a new single called "Ghosted at Home." The trio recently announced their collaborative debut album Los Angeles, which is set to arrive on November 3 via Play It Again Sam.

"The first sound you hear on 'Ghosted at Home' is also the first recording we made together in the sacred area of Yosemite," noted Tolhurst in a press statement. "With it, we attached all our hopes and expectations for the music we were making. It seemed appropriate that the first instrument we played in the forest for our record was also the most ancient—a drum."

And another new video has arrived! (Just read Fred Armisen is in it too, I thought this face looked familiar...)

Quote"It was the chemistry that happened on that first day at his studio," recalls Budgie. "I felt like this is what it was like with Mike Hedges," referring to the producer who helmed early albums by both The Cure and The Banshees.

Encouraged by Lee to leave behind the traces of their past, the duo sifted through the producer's extensive vinyl collection, taking influence variously from obscure Indian, Ethiopian and French records.

"One of the things that Jacknife would say to us was, 'What is the job of the musician?'" says Tolhurst. "We came to the conclusion that it is discovery. Going back to the past is not discovery, it is excavation. We were discovering and it was joyful. When you're a teenager, that's how you start making music. The Cure's first album came from three years of us sitting there just making noise in the back room at Robert [Smith]'s house."

Has anyone of you got the album yet? I haven't ordered it so far (17,99 euro for a cd seemed steep)... Or should I bother with a download (not really my thing, most of them I do burn onto cd anyway)?

I guess amazon are reading my posts here (ha ha), as they reduced the price by 1 euro... so I ordered it. :-D

Great album, lots of drums & percussion (of course), it's good to listen to new music like this!
