It is a popular tourist destination, with a reported 10 million visitors in 2003.

I knew that and some more, though not all of the details.
My point was: is The Cure a band which seek the "Hollywood" kind of fame?

I'm quite certain: IF Robert Smith had been offered a star on this "walk of fame" at some point in time between 1978 and 1989, he'd have told them to "f*** off"...

I think the abovementioned handprints are honour enough (and fittingly, it's near a "guitar center" and not on some kind of tourist attraction)!  :smth023

I totally agree with you on Robert telling them to F#$% off. He couldn't care less. That would be so him.
He also once said about the Queen of England, "Who the F#$% are they to Knight me? They aren't better than me and I'm not better than anyone either." I laughed when I heard him say that.
In all honesty, I would really be shocked to discover that The Cure would be honored with a star on the Walk of Fame. Like you said, the handprints are enough outside The Guitar Center.
I would still show up for the ceremony if or when they do get honored with a star though.
