Sometime ago one friend asked me to suggest any song for feeling better. I know there was some song from Morrissey being name as the "best medicine" against depression. But The Cure has also very nice songs to make you feel alive again ;).
Among of them I would cite "Doing the unstuck" as the most powerful one for these sad days. What abouty you guys?. What Cure songs would serve as medicine in bad days? Think on it...
David.
Hmmmm... There are so many of them. Let's see...
Friday I'm In Love, Doing The Unstuck (especially the Saunders remix), Mint Car (live versions from '95), Birdmad Girl, The Upstairs Room, How Beautiful You Are, Happy The Man (live), A Foolish Arrangement, The Weedy Burton (always good for a laugh), Gone!, Throw Your Foot... just to name a few.
There are also some "happy" sounding Cure songs that can actually make me feel sad (or have mixed emotions) just because they are so beautiful ? Breathe, Sugar Girl, Halo, Before Three, Plainsong, and many others.
It's kind of weird I guess. I really don't find myself listening to certain things depending on mood very often. I just pretty much listen to whatever comes up in my playlist, but my reaction to it will vary depending on how I feel.
But I know I listen The Kiss if ever get really pissed off. It lets off a lot of steam.
I would agree....
'Doing the Unstuck' on SHOW is brilliant. Porl and his guitar are
on fire!
"its a perfect day...."
I think a further happy song is "the caterpillar". Even my mother likes it although she usally hates my music.
My favourites for cheering me up are: Wrong number, A letter to elise, The baby screams, Torture and Open :D
A further happy song for me is "this twilight garden". Although it sounds very melancholic nevertheless it is a happy song because I feel happy when I hear it. It's so much love and flowers in it...
Friday I'm in Love definetely! :?
That's a happy one. It's strange some other cure fans dont like it
David.

Cheer up songs? Not too many,
but Friday, Doing the unstuck, Lovecats, Gone, Mint car
But also Jumping someones else's train, Throw your foot,
dressing up, a man inside my mouth, halo (but I don't really like it)
Icing sugar!!!!!!
Hey you!!!!
I'm sorry Caley, but Happy the man is a very sad song to me! Funny how different songs work differently for others...
From the edege..., Baby screams, End, Want, The Kiss, Perfect girl, Fight, Prayers for rain, Burn... makes me feel more than happy, I'm not looking for a "happy song" to be happy, i love these songs because there is something in the way how it sounds. I'm always impressed when i listen these songs (just to name a few) because there is something in the guitars, the drum, the introduction, etc. It's maybe weird but i think that's one of the reason why i love this band.

I'm not sure I was thinking clearly when I said Happy The Man. It really isn't a "cheer up" song for me either. But I do like to listen to it before I go to bed. I find it very relaxing... I think that's what I meant.
Nothing beats the one from Washington '84, on the "Cold" boot. So smoooooooth... :D
:) "Doing The Unstuck"!! :D
RETURN, MINT CAR ,
THROW YOUR FOOT and DO THE HANSA make me happy

Slvvy(doing the unstuck) but slvvy is more intense...Taking off...
just like heaven
The Lovecats!!!! Definetely.
good suggestions, i'd just add that with me 'desperately journalist' does it every time... :smt043
i once heard one person say that when he first heard "Friday I'm In Love", he wanted to drop everything he was doing, call his girlfriend and scream the lyrics to her.
coooolll..
that's one of my fave happy songs.
J
In addition to Friday i'm in love, Doing the Unstuck, Return as mentioned. I think the 13th and Pink Dream are the best happy songs
just say yes :-D
The Dragonhunter Song, obviously! lol
And Friday I'm in Love, Why Can't I Be You, Lovecats, 2 Late, Mint Car, A Few Hours After This, Harold and Joe, Just Like Heaven, The Caterpillar, and the newer live versions of "Let's Go To Bed." I've never liked the song til they got rid of the keys. Now it's a funky little dance tune that I really like. One of the only good things, in my opinion, that came from losing the keys...
What about Close To Me??!! That song gets me in a good mood. I'm ashamed that I had to search for the name though. I have been on a Morrissey kick for sometime now and am just now getting back to The Cure.
"JUST SAY YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS" (do it now!) la la la la, "CLOSE TO ME"
"MINT CAR" and "FRIDAY I'M IN LOVE.
Halo is very happy too.
doing the unstuck
push
halo
a pink dream :-D
and naturally
friday i'm in love
well one of the songs that make feel so happy is HIGH, one of my favourite songs.

Doing The Unstuck :rocker
Boys Don't Cry
Open
From the edge...
A Forest
The Blood
Push
The 13th
...
!!!
but somehow, A Walk is quite fun too... :rocker
It's a perfect day for letting go....
Wow How Beautiful You Are, Open, and A Letter to Elise are actually really sad songs
I think Close to Me, Lets Go To Bed, Lovecats, and Hot Hot Hot are songs that I dig for the few days I find myself happy...
For me Lovecets and Mint Car!
Friday I'm in love :)
"Happy The Man" is like a relaxation tape for me...it sounds so soothing like rain in a forest :smth020...
I'd have to say songs that get me up and happy are the songs off "Three Imaginary Boys" or "I'm A Cult Hero." Something silly like that where Robert had his old singing voice and the band was more poppy and punky...always gets me in a good mood! :)
Aside from what everyone else has already said a bajillion times,
So What, Close to Me, Just Say Yes(Curve Remix), Spilt Milk, and Return
Doing The Unstuck, Push, Lovecats, Ching Chang Chong, A Forest, The Blood, The Hansa, are a few.
doing the unstuck, high, mint car, why can't i be you?
Inbetween Days!!!!
It makes me want to dance and feel all nice and summery inside!

"High" for sure.
Any actually, when i am happy !! yeh The Cure !! what else....
um lost my ipod AHHH was just going out, and wanted to pop it inn the car...

It used to be good. (reception) Station still cool though.
Syn radio in Melb . in a rush, byes for now
:rocker
Hot Hot Hot!!! just makes me feel all warm inside. Of course, so does Friday I'm in Love and Close to Me. For some reason, Fire in Cairo makes me pretty happy as well. ;)
many to mention... i would say JUST LIKE HEAVEN, CLOSE TO ME
For me normally "DOING THE UNSTUCK" but after the disappointment from the live experience March 14th in Belgium, (I was away to far from the stage and I had not the feeling that I was there :()even this song couldn't makes my happy :smth011
Happy I went to Rotterdam 18th of march and now it's back my song for the worst days of my live :!:
Friday never fails to make me smile. :-D

it's curious how some songs can work so differently with different people. i can never think of 'doing the unstuck' as a happy-happy song. it's a very emotional one for sure, but for me it's a song you sing as your "very last thing you ever do", before you choose to go out with a big bang or something.
being thus it's a "huge" song... but somehow scary. even somehow desperate - but in a "i'm dead anyway so why worry?" kind of a way.
*edit: i just realized i've talked about this somewhere else in a forum so i'm probably just repeating myself here. anyway, was reminded by it because i was just listening to this song - and feeling just as "on the edge" about it as always before. myself i cannot sense any real pure & simple happiness in the song. the feeling of some kind of ultimate relief of giving up on everything is what gets closest to that...
but not happiness.
anyway just strange how the same songs can work/affect us so differently!
I'm always happy when I hear the Cure, but with "doing the unstuck" I meant this song really helps me when I feeling down // it's like the music and Roberts voice say something like "come on, go further, ..." Than I think, ok it's true and than I feeling much better. (But with everything not all the people have the same feelings with the same song :-)) BTW here the lyrics I love it.
"Doing The Unstuck"
it's a perfect day for letting go
for setting fire to bridges
boats
and other dreary worlds you know
let's get happy!
it's a perfect day for making out
to wake up with a smile without a doubt
to burst grin giggle bliss skip jump and sing and shout
let's get happy!
but it's much to late you say
for doing this now
we should have done it then
well it just goes to show
how wrong you can be
and how you really should know
that it's never too late
to get up and go
it's a perfect day for kiss and swell
for rip-zipping button-popping kiss and well...
there's loads of other stuff can make you yell
let's get happy!
it's a perfect day for doing the unstuck
for dancing like you can't hear the beat
and you don't give a further thought
to things like feet
let's get happy!
but it's much too late you say
for doing this now
we should have done it then
well it just goes to show
how wrong you can be
and how you really should know
that it's never to late
to get up and go
kick out the gloom
kick out the blues
tear out the pages with all the bad news
pull down the mirrors and pull down the walls
tear up the stairs and tear up the floors
oh just burn down the house!
burn down the street!
turn everything red and the beat is complete
with the sound of your world
going up in fire
it's a perfect day to throw back your head
and kiss it all goodbye
it's a perfect day for getting old
forgetting all your worries
life
and everything that makes you cry
let's get happy!
it's a perfect day for dreams come true
for thinking big
and doing anything you want to do
let's get happy!
but it's much to late you say
for doing this now
we should have done it then
well it just goes to show
how wrong you can be
and how you really should know
that it's never too late
to get up and go

i've always found these ending lines quite shocking, actually. they always set real shivers across my back rather than make me happy.
because... now there's a guy who's thrilled about hearing the sound of the world going up in fire and kissing it all goodbye...
i find that quite scary.
what sort of person can really say that? somebody who has nothing left to lose and who doesn't give a damn about anything, anymore. it's a scary kind of violent courage... a person who's not afraid of anything, not even his own destruction. for me it's a song about permanent end of things, THE end. and that's a scary thing...
anyway, i suppose there's often something in complete psychopaths that you can admire: their absolute straightforwardness and lack of fear (even fear of their own destruction).
i suppose that's what i can admire in the protagonist in 'doing the unstuck'.
sometimes i do wish i could be like that, just burn it all down. and really NOT coming back next day and saying "ok i was just kidding, it was just a bit of fun".
Maybe you have a point ... I see it like a feeling inside, an expression, I don't take it seriously. If you do that, than it's really scary, I agree, but it's like ...
IT DOESN'T MATTERS IF WE ALL DIE,
also scary not ??? :?
Mint Car,Friday I'm in Love,Do the Hansa,The Lovecats,Close to Me,The Perfect Girl,Why Can't I Be You,Just Like Heaven.....

I would say this phrase made me happy today... really
But my fav 'happy' song is yeh Doing The Unstuck and of course some songs from 'Greatest Hits' like Why Can't I Be You? or Never Enough...
i have fifteen songs to be happy to: doing the unstuck, mint car, the only one, the exploding boy, hot hot hot!!!, the perfect girl, just like heaven, strange attraction, club america, wendy time, friday i'm in love, hello i love you, hey you!!!, just say yes, and throw your foot.
:smth049 :smth049 :smth049
Definately HOT HOT HOT! My father had the DJ play this at his second wedding last year, just to cheer me up when I was sad! It's hard to be depressed when you're listening to this track, it's just so happy!
And most of the tracks on Three Imaginary Boys are pretty uplifting, at least in tone and tempo. :smth023
Lime Time works for me =P
I think Throw Your Foot is the track that´ll do the trick for me. And then of course The Exploding Boy always makes me wanna dance.
I used to dislike Friday I'm In Love until just recently and now I recognize it as a brilliant pop song with universal themes. It seems to be the perfect Cure song for a sunny, happy day.
Also The Exploding Boy and Hot!Hot!Hot!

Yes yes yes! Of course Friday I´m in Love is as near to a perfect happy pop song as you get. It´s just a bit to obvious and not really that good but I´ll be damned if I don´t whistle that tune almost every friday at work.

I hear this song every morning in my car :-D , it's my son's favourit to start every ordinary schoolday! And it's so sweet when he singing along with it, and the combination from the song and my singing son ... makes me feel soooooooooo happy :smth026
I really like Hot Hot Hot for the happiness feeling.
Anyone remember "Play With Me" from the TIB deluxe cd?
That one always makes me happy! :D
So many.............
Throw Your Foot / The Exploding Boy/ Fire in Cairo / Grinding Halt/ Close to Me/ Perfect Girl/ High/
Also, the whole of Blue Sunshine, particularly Mr Alphabet Says!!
Inbetween Days or Friday I'm in Love
Catch. It's a good happy song that isn't overly sentimental like Mint Car or one of the other overly upbeat songs post Disintegration. Inbetween Days, Close to Me, Six Different Ways are good happy songs, too.
Caterpillar, doing the unstuck, Harold and Joe, six different ways, Just like heaven and ........
play for today, halo for the music (simplistic lyrics), Ching Chang Chong.....
Harold & Joe is one of my favourite happy songs. I also listen to Hey You when I need a bit of a pick up. :D
Harold and Joe was my ring to wake up. :)
High and pictures of you for my calls.
I can't choose rings with my new phone. :(
Return, Mint Car, Doing The Unstuck (live). This songs always make me happy
Best happy Cure songs with quality (i mean happy both in music and lyrics):
Close to Me (even if the lyrics are a bit ambiguous)
The Lovecats
The Caterpillar (even if there's the 'my hopeless heart' line in it)
Friday I'm in Love
The 13th
"Friday" also depicts the other days of the week rather gloomily... ;)
I think "Doing the unstuck" and "Just Say Yes" are good examples of rather 'happy' Cure songs.
I agree about Lovecats, Mint Car etc.
Too many happy songs actually to be that gothic gloom band some people still think it is...

Yeah, but on Fridays (like today) you don't really care about the other days of the week. Anyway, it's a song that should be only listened to on Fridays... :-D
By the way, there are other Cure songs already mentioned in this thread that are undoubtedly very happy, like 'Doing the Unstuck', 'Mint Car' or 'Halo'. I just didn't mention them because i've always found them musically a bit annoying...
Well, I can speak only for myself, but when I'm really depressed or feeling sad,
I'm not able listen to "happy" Cure songs. Anyway...here is my small list:
01 The Top (best medicine)
02 Wrong Number (feeling alive again)
:D
Doing the Unstuck <3
High :smth020 This song always makes me smile instantly and the videoclip is very funny as well!
