I'd like to ask stuff that happened behind various Cure gigs.
You could do that too...
:-D
What's the story behind THE CURE AT BIZZARE FESTIVAL 1998
There were equipment problems, but the band seems in rather strange mood...
What do you think?!
i have just listened this show again!! Robert seems to be very drunk! i also read somewhere else that he vomited during one song but i can find which one!
i will give it a listened tomorrow morning!!
ariel
I don't have the show, but have heard that in Lyon98 he was much more drunk. I have listened to One Hundred Years from this concert he cannot sing a big part of the song...
You are very right, this is one of the most unusual concerts I have ever seen or heard. Watching the video of this, it's clear that most (all?) of the band is wasted. Perry is bouncing all over the stage, and Simon makes an unusually large number of mistakes. Roger makes some jerking around movements (kind of like Lol used to), and Robert makes up new melodies and improvises the words...
I thought it was really funny during 10.15 Saturday Night. During Simon's bass solo, he messes up pretty bad, then just gives up after a while and stops playing. Also, Robert sings the lyrics of Watching Me Fall during Untitled. I actually thought in a way this concert was great because they seemed more energetic and carefree. Sometimes I thought Perry actually played better than usual, like he had more confidence.
Overall, a pretty sloppy performance though. But an interesting moment in Cure history!
oh..
I would really like to see the video of Lyon98. This thread made me curious and I read a few reviews of the concert on chainofflowers and what I read  . At that moment I knew that I have to see this video :D .
1998 was a bad cure-year! the most interessting part of the bizarre-concert is the beginnig of "untitled": robert sang the first lines from "watching me fall".
i would love to watch the video too, as it seems robert hardly stands up on the stage. I also heard that roger looks at robert as if he had to stop the playing and hold him just to help him not falling to the floor. It would be nice to see what's is true and what's rumoured... :-D
Interesting that however they drank during their history - they didnt mess things so much, not to mention cancelling the gigs (God forbid!).
I think that they are so good tehnically (especielly Simon - he's reliable and precise as a rock thrown at your face  ) that they dont NEED to stay sober - to sound good whenever, however... Huh, bizzare show...
I mean SHAKE DOG SHAKE sounds really great - especially JASON'S vile drum set molesting... :-D
WOw I thought thiws gig was really rather good and they dont seem that drunk to me.
SHake dog shake is amazing and UNtitled is stunning not to mention the killer rendition of Wrong Number.
Though I guess the DVD is called a Strange day for a reason! :-D
:D OMG!! I so want to see and hear this show!!!!! It sounds hilarious!!! So PLEASE PM me somebody if you have it!!! Thanx!! :D
Lyon 98 will be on my site as soon as I can get my technical issues rectified.....
One caracteristic bootleg review:
1986.08.04 "Dax Arenes de Dax" - Robert is very drunk.
:-D :-D :-D
However, lets not talk about them as if they were Pogues.
thank you jeff
can't wait for it
thank you very much! :D
Lyon 98 is uploaded on a new server. Now if I can just figure out how to allow everyone to get it.....stupid technology!
I hope you will manage to do it :)
Algedly there was a gig in Grenoble in 1985 where Lourence sang "Wild Thing" in order to celebrate 9 years of the band on stage...
Any ideas of known recording of this?!
:?
Lyon?
Are you guys not talking about the concert in Koln? "Bizarre Festival"...I remember the keyboards from ROGER didnt sound at the beginning from "Shake dog Shake"...

No, I think there's a consensus that the Lyon show was a drunken disaster as well!
The Bizarre Fest definitely had it moments, but it seems that Lyon did too. One day I'll get a good video of this...
Sorry dude, as the first post had the subject "Bizarre Festival" I thought you did mean this one from Koln...
Now I am curious as well :smt017

The recordings I know of this don't have Wild Thing. There is some debate as to whether it was actually played at this venue.
Let me do some checking...

Well I saw Shake Dog Shake from Bizzare Festival and it apears that Roger is not there when song starts... he runs over to the keyboards pretty late... cameras show him coming from the front of keyboards behind... smiling.
Not that he was essential for the song. Shake Dog Shake works great with or without keyboards...
Concerning Lol singing "Wild Thing" ... I didnt find this recording nor is this gig mentioned at known resources (besides 'Curenews' where I originally saw it)...
i used to have it in mp3... :(
Quote from: smithai used to have it in mp3... :(
You had Lol singing Wild Thing???
uff
i guess it was lol. Once i found a mp3 being shared somewhere as the cure cover of Wild Thing. It had very bad quality. I lost it when my drive was gone.
Hmmm... but concerning on you reaction, maybe it was just a fake song... or not... i really don't know how is Lol's singing voice. And as i said it had very bad quality.

According to
cure-concerts.de, the only known recording of Wild Thing is from the second night of New York '87. I think I might know the recording you're talking about. I got it off a P2P network a long time ago. The quality is terrible. But on this one it's surely Robert. I also have a version I got from curetrade some months ago with better sound, but it's the same show.
Toward the end Robert starts singing/talking in a really strange voice (unless Lol took over at that point), but I don't know. It's still not Grenoble '85, that's for sure.
So... ???
what can i say? i haven't it anymore,so i cannot confirm it. Probably it was not Lol.
Whats the story with The Cure PEEL SESSIONS for Japaneese Whispers, The Top and Head On The Door?!
I heard only two songs (Just One Kiss and Six Different Ways) and I heard that Peel didnt play them after HOTD...
These sessions are extremely rare mentioned so I thought I should ask...
PS
And another off topic thing:
(silly one)
Is Robert SMOKER?! I think he is. I suspect. But I did not see any new photos of him with cigarette.
Any other members?!
PS pt2
I dont smoke, and I dont endorse it.
It just bloody bothers me!!!

The Cure did not play a Peel Session for the Japanese Whispers era. What you heard was the Kid Jensen session, which is also where "Ariel" comes from. The Top session is extremely rare, and The Head on the Door session more common. They played "The Exploding Boy" on that one, which is kind of interesting. You can find a lot of info about Cure radio and TV sessions here:
http://www.cure-concerts.de/fmtv.htmI've always wondered the same thing about Robert and smoking. I've only seen one photograph of him with cigarette. It was in the Ten Imaginary Boys book. If he does, he sure is good at concealing it!
I know that Simon, at least at one time, enjoyed a good :smt033. I read an article about a press conference from '92 that said, "Simon is hauling away on a joint." I've seen Boris smoke in a video before. And Lol... Well, I think we all know he was a smoker.
:smt025
Well, the pictures of all members with cigarettes are very common on Pornography (and all before) pictures.
And Robert is mentioned in one of the books that he had to quit cigarettes circa HOTD (or even The Top) becouse his health problems...
But then... I clearly remmember that I saw (or dreamed though) that there was an article (circa 'Bloodflwers') in which some journalist and Robert and few other blokes go out on drinking binge and interview where Robert smokes 'Gouloisse' or some such...
:-D
Yup, Robert does smoke....
That is He Did smoke then...
I got another trivial issue to ask about:
DID YOU HEAR THE VOICES OF ALL BAND MEMBERS?!
Beside Robert's small talk, there is not many ocasions to hear others speak...
I only heard Simon's voice on that KROQ interview...

i think i've seen a couple of photos (but they are all old ones, around '83 or '84). but i've heard from one person whose friend... (ha ha what a way to start a topic - now everyone will believe me on this for sure oh yes... sure it sounds like an urban legend but at least i do believe my source... well anyway:
...attended the bloodflowers show in paris & managed to get an autograph from robert afterwards that robert was 'casually smoking' while he wrote the autograph :smt033

Well, indeed he seems a bit! drunk. His erratic behaviour, the fact that he sings very close to the audience (he never does that) and touches them (he NEVER does that)...

the best part of it :2:49
fortunately, he's mature enough now to cut down the amount of alcohol he's drinking before the shows.

another video from 1998.
Ah, I still have parts of this gig on a videotape somewhere (along with another festival show from '98)!
I loved it at the time, not because it was their best gig, but because it was real fun to watch!
Robert's lying on the floor at one point and Simon's walking over to look if he's okay, while Roger's shaking his head in disbelief. :-D
